I randomly came across Robert Earl's through various facebook postings...but after reading about the place in the Long Beach Post, I knew I'd have to give this place a shot! My husband and I came by last night with a few friends. And the minute you walk in...it smells like heaven. They have a pretty substantial menu...so we opted for the 3 item combo. The husband and I ordered the hot links, pork ribs, and the brisket with bbq sauce ladled on top. Ordered us some mac and cheese, baked beans, and a portion of their banana pudding for dessert. We came here hungry and we meant business! We didn't wait too long before our order was called...and we couldn't have been more excited watching her put together the final touches to our order. Food? Absolutely delicious!!!! This might just be my FAVORITE bbq joint! The ribs were smoked to perfection and just fell off the bone...the brisket was tender...perfect combo of fat an meat...and the hot link...YUM! Love hot links! The sides were delicious...that was some mac and cheese perfection. So good, I couldn't share with the husband...The beans were so good! Great flavor without coming off and tasting like pure sugar. Banana pudding? Love the stuff. I love magnolia bakery, but I always find it too sweet...Robert Earl's version? A top BBQ place for the area. Some days they are as good as Bludso's, most days Bigmista's is my favorite. I am a big brisket fan. The first few times, I visited, I thought they were the best brisket in So Cal. But I've been really liking Bludoe's the last few times I visited them. Then BigMista's opened and I feel that they are the best in the area. All of these BBQ Joints compare to Franklin BBQ and the Lockhart Texas Joints. Enjoying good BBQ caused me to visit this restaurant while I was in the LA area. It's not far from Bludso's in Compton which I really enjoyed. This hole in the wall restaurant does offer indoor seating which is a plus as this allowed me to dine in rather than eating the food in my car. I ordered a sliced brisket sandwich and a side of their beans. When ordering I notified the cashier of my Yelp discount and even showed it to her on my phone app. I thought I saw her enter the discount in the register. The food came out less than 10 minutes later. The sandwich was on a hoagie roll and I will tell you the brisket was perfect!!! The meat flavor of the brisket was so good that I didn't want to put any of their sauce on it. It was as good of brisket as I have ever had (5). The other reason that I didn't want to put any sauce on it is because I didn't love it. Actually I barely liked it (2.5). I thought it was a little too strong. I believe they have two types mild and spicy. I asked for mild. I hope that's what I got. It wasn't bad but it would have damaged the taste of that wonderful brisket. Also I liked their beans but because of the sauce that had been mixed in it I would only give the beans a 3. During the meal the owners wife came out to check on me and was very nice and friendly. As I was finishing I noticed that on my receipt I didn't receive the Yelp 10% discount on the sandwich. I went back up to the counter and asked the hot ( forgot to add that earlier) cashier about it. She was nice and said that she forgot to ring it up even when I showed it to her. She offered to make it up on my next visit but I told her I didn't live here. Was in the area and wanted bbq. But didn't know if any places that were close. Searched Yelp! and found Robert Earl's and drove about 10 mins. to get there. Parked on the side street and noticed a bbq that was smoking on the island in the middle of Artesia Blvd. Found out later that it belonged to the restaurant! Great calling card! Opened the screen door entrance and walked into a GIANT room with picnic tables and noticed seating outside as well as I looked up to the menu boards. I was between the rib lunch, rib tips lunch or the brisket lunch which all come with one side dish of either potato salad, mac n' cheese, beans, greens, mac salad or cole slaw. The cashier suggested the Junior meal since it comes with two meats and a side dish. So I got that meal. Came with 2 pork ribs which were DELICIOUS & about 6 oz. or 3 slices of brisket which was also DELICIOUS & 2 slices of white bread to mop up the sauce! There are 3 choices of sauces for your 'que...spicy(made my buddie's nose run, mild(which is what I chose & was slightly tangy and nothing overpowering) or mixed(no review on that sauce). The mild sauce was very good with the meat as it only enhanced the rub/seasoning on the ribs & brisket and all flavors were very well balanced. I chose the mac 'n' cheese as my side and I wish I had upgraded to the larger size. It was very creamy and tasty. I rounded out my meal with a can of Pepsi. But other drink choices are lemonade, Dr. Pepper, Coca Cola, Sprite and bottled water. A very good choice as the food here is all made on site and made with love. Okay so I've gone back a few more times here and decided to bump this up to 5 stars because well the owners are just so damn sweet!! Yes, your food will likely not be ready in the 20 minutes they said it would be. If you're calling in an order for pickup. Come in 30-40 minutes instead to avoid the wait. I got the Pork Spare Ribs twice again and it was never at the same "boiled" consistency as the first time. They have the perfect amount of crust to tender ratio now and are seriously finger-licking good. A full rack of these babies is more than enough for 2 people. Beware though that sometimes they are sold out of certain meats or sides for the day. This place is starting to blow up and I'm scared I'll soon never be able to get the full rack of Pork Spare Ribs for dinner near when they are closing :( Last time we had to get the Babyback Ribs instead -- albeit also delicious, but not the same. I phoned in my order for The Lil Tex platter at 4:10pm. I was told it will be ready in 45 minutes. I arrived at Robert Earls BBQ at 5:20pm. After I paid for my order I was told that my order was not ready yet because their still waiting for the links. I didn't get my food until 5:55pm. All that wait just for some bits and pieces of brisket, salty mac & cheese, and runny cole slaw. We ended up throwing away the mac & cheese and cole slaw. The best part of The Lil Tex were the spare ribs and potato salad. This is my 3rd time ordering food from here. The meat are always on point but the sides are consistently inconsistent. After today's experience I think I will be taking a break from Robert Earls BBQ :( read more

We've heard it so many times before: finally great BBQ in Southern California. Most of the time, it's a report from someone who's from So Cal and never been in the South or Lower Midwest where true BBQ is smoked daily. Good BBQ is a chore to find, locally, and on our way to Robert Earls BBQ we expected to be let down, as we normally are when it comes to sampling BBQ in California. We aren't from Long Beach, but were in town to go to a Long Beach State basketball game and this place was only 15 minutes out of the way. Upon arrival, we had a bit of trouble finding it. The storefront looked more condemned than inviting. We thought it was closed before noticing smoke stemming from the back. Further investigation found a small open sign. We walked in and were greeting by a group of energetic, warm, friendly guys that were thrilled we were there (it was 2pm, the lunch crowd was gone). We spoke with the owner (I'm assuming that's Robert Earl?) who mentioned he uses the Mississippi/Texas BBQ style his grandfather taught him. While there's minor details that can be improved, you'll be challenged to find better BBQ than this in So Cal. It rivals places like Lucille's and Wood Ranch, but comes with a smaller price tag. In fact, you likely won't be able to finish your meal. We each ordered three meat combos and while my friend swallowed most of his rib tips, pulled pork and brisket, I managed to chew through about a quarter of mine (the only difference on my plate with the hot links replaced rib tips. We each enjoyed our meals. The meat was smoked well, was tender and packed flavor and fortunately the mild and hot sauce was favorable. These guys are the rare group that knows how to BBQ - in So Cal. I'd expect to find this in Tennessee, Georgia or South Carolina. And, their sweet cornbread is darn good. What's the future of Robert Earls? Will it be here long term? I'm not sure. The inside of the restaurant is doable and clean and word of mouth has carried well for this place, but the outside needs a major and I mean, major face lift. Simply put a brand new, bright, bold sign on the roof that says "Robert Earls Real BBQ", brighten up the windows and open up to the world and this place could end up on the Travel Channel. Right now, it's value is hidden behind what's like the old Berlin Wall. Invest in a makeover and the sky is the limit. Another thing, people want beverage choice. As the owner told us, his grandpa would probably slap him if he found out the only sweet tea they were serving was in an Arizona can. It's time to invest in a small pot to brew real sweet tea and offer more than Costco bottled water and Smart and Final sodas. This business is better than that. Mr Earl has done a good job here. The lady of the house even came out and gave us free mac, left a great impression. Anyway, this fed 3 ppl including myself, costing about 25 dollars. Like many have said before, the brisket was very flavorful! Even without the sauce. Peppery and moist! "The ribs were the perfect balance of meaty and fatty. Although we started rough, with immediate call major sides were unavailable, and there was a mix-up on the order at pickup and not ready, we took it with a grain of salt. We ordered the Mini Texas Sampler. The chicken was a bit dry and just ok, the tri-tip could have been cooked a little less, but we could have gone for more sausage and ribs. He ordered take out meal of three meats and two sides; chicken, brisket and beef ribs for $31.00 approx. The meats were excellent; tender and well seasoned. However, my rating is because of the sides; the bbq beans were not good or tasty at all; overly sweet pork n beans with bbq sauce (perhaps). The green beans were mushy, with a "off" taste and just disappointing. Thus we did not have a complete meal. I may return again just for the meats and prepare my own sides. The ultimate in home made BBQ! This is coming from someone that does not care for BBQ, they managed to turn me into a BBQ lover. We went TWICE in one week, yes that good. It is a friendly your at home with family atmosphere and with cool knick-knacks on the wall. The first time we went i got to meet robert earl son. A real respectful, well mannered, and customer comes first kinda guy. He even treated us to a serving of the banana pudding. THE best i have ever had. And i have tried tons and tons of banana puddings. This is a must have and get another one for the road. As for the food. Absolutely delicious. Rib meat falls off the bone, the chicken is moist and juicy in every bite. NO annoying dried rough tough chicken. The links are spicy with a kick at the end. The taste lingers in your mouth so you can savor it LOL, I got to try beef and pork ribs but i have to say the beef ribs is where its at. The rib looks like it came off a dinosaur! Full of meat and taste. The brisket was also so tender and juicy. I had almost every meat on the menu because we ordered extra just to try it. For the sides, i would say the mac and cheese is the winner. A traditional looking mac and cheese that that gooey cheese that sticks to the container when you try to serve it to your plate. It is flavorful. My 2nd choice is the potato salad. My 3rd side would be baked beans. Just to give everyone an idea of how nice Robert was to my family, we had ordered a BEEF rib dinner to go. When I picked up the order from the window my mother in law opened the container to find it was pork ribs. She brought it to their attention and asked them to change them for the correct order because it was for a sick family member who had just left the hospital. When they heard that they told us they were gonna make him feel better through some good food and hook him up! Well we kept eating and waited for the meal to be corrected, to our amazement they gave us HALF A TRAY of Beef ribs on them for making the mistake, making us wait, and to have our family member feel better!! Let me make this short and sweet. Robert Earls BBQ is superb. I have only had the brisket sandwich and pork ribs, which were truly outstanding. Robert adds just the right balance of smokey and sweet goodness. The first thing that you will notice are the large portions that have very small prices. For example a brisket sandwich packed with meat is only $7! The meat is NOT fatty or tough whatsoever. Tender, juicy, and just the right amount of smokey flavor. The BBQ sauce adds a tangy and slightly sweet accent. The combo just plain works. I have been too many BBQ spots, some which were awful (i.e. Pinkies BBQ, which not surprisingly closed). So good...we're not from the area and we yelped restaurants and this was one of the first places that popped up and I must say best BBQ I've had! The smells coming from this place were fabulous. I got a two meat and 3 meat combo so I could try a big variety of the foods. I was wishing they had something like the texas sampler though that Bludso's have. The portion size was very good for the price. I got pulled pork, brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs and the hot links. The hot links and pork ribs were the stand out. The links were spicy and had a good snap to them. The pork was super tender. The beef ribs were a disapointment. They were extremely tough and valmost impossible to eat. However, I'm not a huge fan of beef ribs in the first place though so take that with a grain of salt. The pulled pork was good and with the adding on the bbq sauce it was great. They do a sweet sauce that was quite tasty. Greens and baked beans were delicious. The service was friendly, the location was easy to find and park at. I wish there were more lights on the street but the business itself was well lit. I have the Itis! Okay. So let me start off by saying this was my first time here and I had such an amazing experience that it will be hard to beat. Pulling up it doesn't look like much but I'm guessing they are in between locations or decorations... but before you even get to the entrance the aroma of spices from their BBQ hits your nose and makes you hungrier than you already were. I'm talking Craving! The inside was beautifully decorated with a very rustic southern vibe. I liked it. Bathroom was clean with a pine scent to it. I don't know how rare it is but the line wasn't too long and I was surprised at how soon our order was ready. Let me add that today is Friday. That's always good in my book. The menu is clean, easy to to read, and straightforward. The staff greeted us, was very friendly and were helpful on explaining menu items. So on to the food. So we ordered the beef brisket dinner and the hot link dinner. No regrets! Dinners come with two sides each so we both got baked beans (Hell Yes) mac n cheese (Yes) and potato salad (Yes). I'm not one to dump on any food that salt and pepper can cure. I would personally put a little more salt and pepper on my potato salad and the Mac but it's still good enough to stand on it own. The brisket was just amazing I ordered it with mild sauce and the hot links with the spicy. Yes do this! Bomb! Both sauces OMG smack me in the face with them please. This was our second time eating Robert Earl' BBQ, the first time was at a school function and it was so good but the sample size wasn't enough to write a review on. Today I brought it home for Father's Day, and it was way better than last time because it was hot and juicy. I bought pork ribs, brisket, and chicken. For sides it was the baked beans, potato salad, Mac and cheese, and cole slaw. The food was phenomenal! The meat just melted off the bone and the sauce was perfect, not overbearing; so you can taste the meat, so damn good! The chicken was excellent And I'm not a big fan of chicken. The brisket is second to none, it just melts in your mouth. The sauces are so damn good, we had a mix of mild and spicy and both are great, not overpowering, but just right! Best BBQ in the LBC or anywhere else for that matter! I've been to the top spots in Kansas City and Atlanta, and Robert Earl's food is better than Arthur Bryant's or Jack Stacks or Oklahoma Joes or Gates Bros... and I'm sorry to say Johnny Rebs has lost a loyal customer. I visited for the first time a few weeks ago at the behest of a co-worker. I took a nice drive from LA to LB. Parked my car and went inside. The smells were divine. Food was mad to order, so it took awhile. So worth the wait! My taste buds and belly were fully satisfied! Highly recommended! read more

I went to Robert Earl's today (I've been there many times before), the service was terrible & they charged $1.00 more than the price on the menu, when I asked the cashier/food preparer he said the prices changed (shouldn't they change the price on the menu?). Long over due but I have to say this place has the best bbq in Long Beach. The two times I've been here I never had a bad meal and the experience is always warm and friendly. The area it's in is close to Compton but it's not as bad as you would think, just a little more street traffic than others but not bad. They don't have a parking lot around so your only option is street parking, fortunately there is an empty lot near by you can park near the curb. The seating here is limited but unlike Bludsoe's, Robert Earl's have dine in seating, but no out door seating, not a problem but can be a since the seating can be filled easily during busier times. From the two times I've been there I had great bbq and great service. Having gone to Big Mistas and Bludsoe's before I was able to compare and I have to Robert Ear's over the other two. From eating here I feel the food more consistent than Bludsos where I got salty brisket one day but perfect the next and Bit Mista's consistent but not in a good way fatty brisket. All the food I got here from the pork ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and banana pudding were amazing. The prices may be a little up there but you can get lunch specials but I suggest getting the two meat lunch or three meat plates and get the most bang for your buck. If anyone is looking for a good bbq spot in LB I suggest coming here to get some quality food and hostility and join the family. read more

I would go back for the banana pudding alone! Upon entering we met the smell of some good ole BBQ. Food was good: brisket plate, chicken plate and ribs plate with Mac n cheese, baked beans and potato salad. Both my mom and bf enjoyed the flavors and sauces. They were raving about the sauces! I will go back to try the links and collard greens. If you get dessert, get a large banana pudding. Trust me on that! read more
