While I was a 'guest' at Gould Farm (this is what they call the unpaid who come for mental health treatment and staff the resteraunt), a sick calf was killed in a very cruel and old fashioned way. It had gangrene on its foot that farm staff allowed to get worse and worse. Instead of calling a vet, they allowed a former guest to kill the calf with a sledgehammer and railroad spike. However, this failed the first time and required repeated swings over and over. This is what I think of when I remember Roadside Store, animal cruelty and unpaid work for months. read more

Service and ambiance exceptional, and, of course, the cause, but the kitchen really needs to go back to basics. Good diner food is pretty straightforward, and best not messed with (at least not too much) - the old Roadside Cafe practiced this to perfection, but the new version has lost the plot, which is a pity. This morning's "basic breakfast eggs" were 2 eggs sitting atop a massive pile of soggy homefries (more is definitely not better than less); the "brisket hash" was 2 eggs in a bowl of shredded, boiled (was it?) brisket and unseasoned, chunky (boiled?) potatoes. If you like nouvelle diner food, then you'll probably be fine; if not, take Rte 22 when you return to the city and stop at the Putnam Diner. First of all the ethic behind this really cute breakfast/lunch spot is totally worthwhile. They support and hire people with mental health issues who are recovering. I can't say enough good things about the food, the setting, the service, the merchandise. The egg sandwiches were great, the burgers were delicious. Coffee is really good. I bought their local honey. My sister bought hats. We took home maple syrup. Great food, great cause. read more

Great service and a great mission! (See www.gouldfarm.org for deets). Today we were greeted by a helpful waitress who quickly took and filled our drink orders. For lunch I ordered the Roadside burger w greens and got the juiciest burger I've had in a while (guessing that's due to Farm raised, local beef)! Burger was served at a brioche bun made at the Farm's Harvest Barn--go local!! Bun and burger were excellent. Highly recommend the Roadside Cafe! read more

Had a very nice lunch today on our way to a Heritage Walk at Gould Farm. I had the Cubano sandwich. My partner had the quiche special. Both were good. Mine (on sourdough bread) was a bit greasier than necessary. Nice spicy mustard. Her quiche was quite fluffy. Service was fine and friendly. Nice, casual atmosphere. Liked the diverse lunchtime menu. Would definitely eat here again if we were in the area. Good value. read more

Spent the weekend in the Berkshires, and breakfast at the Roadside Cafe was the highlight of my trip. Headed in here for breakfast on a Saturday morning prior to a hike at Monument Mountain. While the place was packed around 12:30pm, we still managed to get a place at the counter for 2. The servers are all so lovely and sweet. Felt like a mom + pop joint. Casual, simple + great food. Not expensive. We ordered coffee (strong!), breakfast sandwiches, a side of home fries and a small buckwheat blueberry pancake. Everything was so delicious. We saw how the breakfast bagels were made and while they're not the healthiest, they 100% hit the spot. Home fries were delicious, too. The star of the show was definitely the pancake. The pancake was chock full of sweet, luscious blueberries and while I'm normally not a fruit-in-pancakes kinda girl, these were amazing. I actually bought a box of the blueberry buckwheat pancake mix to make at home (and so glad the proceeds go to Gould Farm). MUST order!! This is a must stop if you're in the Berkshires. Breakfast is my fav meal of the day and I only wish they were open on Sunday and Monday, too! read more

Roadside has a revamped menu and is doing takeout only during the pandemic. One of the new menu additions is a grilled hot dog! Now, I'm from NJ originally and have been missing great dogs in the Berkshires (my favs in NJ are Rutt's Hutt, Johnny's and Destination Dogs)...until NOW! Best dog I've had in a long time...great flavor, split and grilled, buttered brioche bun...really a treat! All the new items on the menu are terrific and the old standbys are too. Mind you I'm partial to Roadside because I work at Gould Farm and love the mission of the cafe. But frankly (get it?) you can't go wrong grabbing a quick bite at Roadside...food is terrific and the mission is too! read more

A friend in Texas told me the Roadside Store & Cafe "makes the best breakfast in Berkshire County," so I had to try it. I say she's right! My inaugural meal was two eggs over-easy, a small blueberry buttermilk pancake and coffee for $10.07. The staff was friendly and fun to be around (I sat at the bar, so I enjoyed overhearing the staff encouraging each other with smiles and humor). I look forward to more meals at Roadside. You'll feel the community vibe in this little one room restaurant in the best of ways, welcoming and relaxed. It's a little's cold inside during the winter months but the gas "woodstove", friendly people and yummy food warm it up well. Always a good experience and a satisfying meal. The food is fresh, prepared to order, and full of flavor. I had mixed berries in my pancake topped with butter, real maple syrup and an over easy egg. The pancake filled my plate, and that was the small! So good I ate every bite. I look forward to returning and trying their grilled cheese sandwich with fig jam! Stop in, but get there early they close at 2! You won't be disappointed. read more

This place is great. We come here for lunch in the winter from a nearby ski resort. The egg dishes are fresh and good.The kids like the pancakes that come in different plate sizes with the smallest being too large for them to eat. Staff is friendly and personable. read more

Love this place. Every time we are here in the summers, we always stop in for lunch. The food is always nicely prepared and I love that they serve produce from their farm across the street. Gould Farm which they're an offshoot of is a great program. Today, we had a Cubano sandwich made with their fresh homemade bread and pickled onions and cucumbers from their farm. The food is local and full of flavor. The prices are reasonable and the service is great. The portions are solid and the menu offers quite a bit of choices. My favorites are the breakfast burrito and the pancakes! The food is at least mostly local and as a result has a unique twist to traditional flavors. You won't be confused by "sausage"; this is the real stuff! But if you're used to that stuff you may be put off. The cheese is especially good. The yogurt and granola is also a great option. I love that you can refill your own coffee, too. My only "aww man"s are that it's pretty far out there. For most Berkshire residents, it will be a hike to get to this awesome restaurant. Leave yourself a half hour for travel time. On top of that is it's really hard to tell when it will be busy. And if it is, you might be in for a wait; this is a tiny place. For someone coming from Lenox, I'd not advise leaving for this place super hungry - you may pass out by the time you get there, are seated, and served. But if you have the time, enjoy the beautiful ride and get excited for some amazing food! read more

A small place on the side of the road, exactly as described, but it's easy to miss so here's a review so you don't! GIGANTIC pancakes with fresh syrup. The sizes they offer are bigger than you've likely seen anywhere else and they're great. This is a great place for kids because they have tons of puppets and stuffed animals for sale that they can play with. Last time I was there they had various sculptures in the yard which were cool to look at and in the past they've put on performances in their field. A great place to go when the weather is nice so you can walk around and relax. They're not pushy at all, they just want you to enjoy your meal and your time there. read more

Roadside has all the 'regular' fare of a good diner/cafe, but with great local ingredients prepared right over the counter. Service is friendly and makes me feel at home when I visit. I can't believe this place hasn't been reviewed yet! Gould Farm's Roadside Store & Cafe is my favorite breakfast place in the area; I come here every time I visit the Berkshires. They serve breakfast all day (until they close at 2pm), and also have a lunch menu I've never gotten around to trying. They make their own yogurt, granola, sausage, bacon, syrup (tapped from their own trees!), ice cream, breads, vinaigrette - the list goes on, and it's all delicious. A lot of the ingredients come from Gould Farm, right down the road - a cool therapeutic farm community (head over there for pastries from their bakery and a bigger bread selection). The coffee is local, and also very good. My favorite menu item is the breakfast burrito, followed closely by the pancakes and the yogurt/granola/fresh seasonal fruit. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is chill, the music is great, and your money goes to Gould Farm. Highly recommended! read more

Best breakfast anywhere! A regular event especially when grand kids are in town. The pancakes are unbelievably good and unbelievably sized -- your eyes may well be larger than your stomach. The waitstaff are young people making their way back into a full life with the unstinting kindness of Gould Farm, where hard work and community combine to foster mental health. Hooray! read more

Getting back to great. Had breakfast yesterday and happily found things vastly improved from my last visit earlier in the summer. The food was great - fresh ingredients, well prepared and served piping hot. The waitstaff and grill man handled the busy room with aplomb.
