NOTE: Room sizes seem to be THE major topic in reviews, so I'll be addressing the square footage of each room type later in this review.
We visited Chicago the second weekend of April, 2022 and had a lovely stay. If you desire a hotel overlooking the Riverwalk but don't want to spend a ton of money, this hotel is definitely the way to go.
RIVER HOTEL = CLUB QUARTERS HOTEL
Before I address my impressions of the hotel, it's important to understand that the River Hotel is the same as the Club Quarters Hotel, Michigan at Wacker. The address of both is 75 E Upper Wacker Drive. The so-called "River Hotel" is simply its own section at the Club Quarters Hotel, as explained to me by CQ staff. At the hotel entrance, you'll find that the building is identified with both names even though it's all technically the Club Quarters Hotel. Needlessly confusing. If you're interested in more reviews, definitely see Yelp's listing for the Club Quarters hotel, Michigan at Wacker.
We stayed in a Superior Room with River View, which actually had to be booked through the River Hotel website: https://www.chicagoriverhotel.com/ It's possible to book a Superior room through the primary Club Quarters hotel website, but that one doesn't offer a guaranteed river view: https://clubquartershotels.com/chicago/wacker-at-michigan. If you make reservations over the phone, both CQ and River rooms can be booked through CQ's number: 312.357.6400.
RIVERWALK:
If the Riverwalk is important to you, make sure to go when ALL the venders are open. I'd read online that vendors opened this year on April 8th, so was dismayed to find on the 9th that only about two vendors had opened. Turns out the Riverwalk has what they call a "Phased-In Reopening," so all vendors won't be open until sometime in May. What a disappointment! https://www.chicagoriverwalk.us/
ROOM TEMPERATURE CONTROL:
One of the differences (or perhaps the only difference?) between CQ and its River section is that the River Hotel rooms have an updated AC/heating system which allows for individual control of room temperature. The rest of the hotel has room temps set by the hotel.
ROOM SIZES:
The room types and square footage of each are as follows:
CQ Rooms:
Club Room - 210 sq ft
Standard Room - 235 sq ft
Standard w/River View - 235 sq ft
Superior Room - 300 sq ft
One Room Suite - 400 sq ft
On the River side of CQ:
Classic (AKA Standard) - 235 sq ft
Superior Room - 300 sq ft
Superior w/River View - 300 sq ft
One-Room Suite - 400 sq ft
Double/Deluxe Double - 450 sq ft
FYI, I found our 300 sq ft Superior room to be well-sized for the two of us, but would probably feel cramped in a smaller room.
THE RIVER VIEW:
We were pleased with our view, but when we checked in, the only room available to us was on the 5th floor, which bummed me out. If you can request a higher floor, definitely do so when booking. If your online booking website doesn't give you a way to request a high floor, I'd recommend calling the hotel and requesting one immediately after booking. The number is 312.357.6400. Per the hotel staff, it helps to call CQ very early in the AM on your check-in day and request it then (or again).
BED:
Our Superior Room with River View is only available with Queen beds (ours also had a roll-out sofa bed, but not all Superior rooms do.) The larger size of the Superior Room and the guaranteed view of the river was more important to us than a King bed like we have at home, so that was our room selection. I didn't think the difference would be that big a deal, but it actually was more difficult than I'd anticipated. We bumped each other quite a bit, and sometimes I felt like I was close to falling off the bed. Honestly, while the hotel advertises the bed as a Queen, I'm thinking it may have actually been a Full. We had a Queen bed for years, and I don't recall that space was ever problematic. I wish I'd had a tape measure to confirm one or the other.
Additionally, I found the bed's mattress to be exceedingly firm, which made the bed fairly uncomfortable for me. No complaints from my husband, though. I will say that it had great feather pillows, which made sleeping better than it otherwise would have been.
BATHROOM:
The counter space in the bathroom was good, and I use A LOT of toiletries. The overall size of the shower was fine, but the tiny shelf it contained did not have adequate space for my shampoo, conditioner, soap, and razor. That's not a big deal, but is just a personal pet peeve.
COMMON AREAS:
Nothing to report; common areas were similar to what you'd find elsewhere.
TWO CHICAGO CQ HOTELS:
Don't confuse the Club Quarters hotel, Michigan at Wacker with Chicago's other Club Quarters hotel, Central Loop. Apparently Central Loop is in the heart of downtown, but does not have a view of the river.
Hope you've found this to be a helpful review, and have a lovely stay in Chicago! read more
