I work at West End, which is seriously devoid of good restaurants that are not stuffy and/or overpriced. RIS is a breath of fresh air and is my go-to place for lunches with friends, coworkers and clients. There are two dishes on the appetizers menu that I love so much that I order one of them almost every time I come here: the scallop ceviche with tequila ice and the octopus salad. The scallop ceviche is a generous appetizer portion that comes in a salt-rimmed margarita glass and beautifully blends citrus flavors with luscious scallops. The salad -- a similarly generous portion -- features tender grilled octopus (tender and octopus are not words usually heard together, but in RIS' case, the octopus is truly divine), Greek yogurt and olive oil. RIS features daily specials and I've never had a bad dish here. Last week, I tried their calf liver with braised cabbage and roasted potatoes. The liver melted in my mouth and the cabbage with mouthwatering. RIS has lots of outdoor seating in nice weather and great service. I've split dishes with other diners and they've actually brought out the dishes already split on separate plates. This is a big plus for those of us who like to share. read more

I dined at Ris for New Year's Eve dinner and was soooo disappointed by the food and the wine paring. First, however, I will start with the positives. The hostess staff was wonderful and the service was overall good. The oyster stew was wonderful and probably the highlight of the meal. The rest, however, is a different story. I don't even recall some of the other food at the table. Not memorable at all. My lamb was a huge disappointment, especially since it is supposedly Chef Ris L's specialty. It tasted as if it were roasted in the oven a tad below the required temperature resulting in lackluster texture and flavor. The venison was decent but nothing spectacular. I didn't want to even touch any of the dessert. It was either too tart, too sweet, or too overpowering. I think my biggest disappointment was the wine paring. The whites were too sweet (think moscato d'asti) and the grenache they paired with the venison was AWFUL. I mean three buck chuck awful. Actually worse then three buck chuck. At least one doesn't expect much from a three buck chuck. So needlessly to say, I have no plans to return. read more

RIS is another great spot in West End. (where I normally don't visit) I will say up front that I've never been to 1789 and have no plans to visit soon. Why would I, when I can go to RIS? Great food! Great service! Excellent atmosphere! RIS came around and greeted customers. Her personality is as warm and welcoming as the food and restaurant itself. Things you should not miss: 1) great wine list with good combo of reasonable and high end choices 2) scallop margarita is as good as "they say" and can't be missed 3) both the bandino and salmon were cooked perfectly with just enough ingredients to add flavor but not take away the light and crisp taste. 4) also a great bar for drinks/appetizers. Found the service at both the bar and the table to be quite good -- attentive but not too much. Didn't love our desert but only because it was just too much of it. I would recommend an espresso or gelato after dinner because meal portions are healthy. read more

This place is ridiculously overrated, given all the positive press it has been getting. I went with a party of 6 last weekend for dinner and came away sorely disappointed with the experience. The food was not bad by any means...just not that memorable. I had the gnudi for my appetizer and skirt stake for my main entree, both of which were decent. There's nothing imaginitive or creative about the menu. But then again, that's not what Ris is about. You come here for the no-frills, comfort food. The decor of the restaurant was even more unimaginative and bland. The place lacked warmth and personality...looking like it came straight out of the pages of a poterry barn catalog. But perhaps the worst part of the entire experience was the service. Our waiter was stern, acting more like an accountant playing the part of a waiter..if that makes any sense. On multiple occassions, he publicly scolded the busboy, who made a few otherwise unnoticeable mistakes. It made for some very awkward moments. Moreover, he really couldn't speak to the menu at all, didn't know what beers the restaurant had on tap, didn't know how to pronounce the beers they had on tap once he found out, and couldn't name a special worth his life. To top it off, after clearing our table, it took 15+ minutes for him to bring us our check. After that, it took ANOTHER 30 minutes to take our credit cards. All in all, everything about Ris was pretty unmemorable..except the service. Of course, service can be improved and I hope it is. However, the food just isn't quite good enough to bring me back to find out.. read more

The concierge at Mandarin Oriental DC suggested @risDC as the perfect dinner destination after a matinee at Kennedy Center for my party of 10. Ris came out and visited with us 3 times throughout the evening. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was outstanding. Ris made my pre-surgery party a beautiful experience. Her personal touch and gifts blessed my heart. Please let Ris know that my pancreatic cancer surgery was a complete success. I will have dinner at @risDC whenever I'm in the DC area. read more

Love this place above all others. Phenomenal food, service and atmosohere.

You can make jokes about the letters almost being the "IRS" and the staff will laugh, as if that is the first time someone has ever made that joke. This isn't Capital Grille but it is a wonderful place to have an upscale experience. My husband eats meat and I don't. We both did very well. The servers don't make you feel as if they are "stalking' you but if you need a refill, you can get it quickly. read more

RIS is a lovely restaurant with excellent food near the Ritz on 22nd. The food is consistently delicious; I had the whole Branzino today....well prepared with potatoes, capers and eggs...so innovative. I really enjoyed it. The green fried tomatoes with grits was to die for! I am happy and full! read more

LOVE this place! I'm really picky when it comes to Salmon. I grew up in the pacific northwest eating salmon all the time, so their is nothing that grosses me out more than the taste of farm raised atlantic salmon. I had the salmon dish here and it was AMAZING. On the menu it said it was Scottish Salmon, but regardless it was delicious. There was shrimp and some combination of other flavors that perfectly matched the salmon. I ordered the salmon medium rare, but more on the rare side and it was good. Any more cooked and I think it would have lost its flavor. I was there with three others and had the opportunity to try the breaded chicken which was also amazing. It was a large plate so my friend ended up taking half of it home. With that said, we also tried two appetizers. We had the charcuterie board and the Cauliflower main dish. *And despite the fact it was technically a main dish they were so nice to bring it out in four separate bowls. It was great! Overall, I highly recommend this place. I think it's truly underrated, as it's been in the area for a little bit and sits in a slightly awkward location for a restaurant to get tons of attention. With that said, it's perfect for a family event, business meeting or anything else! read more

The second stop during restaurant week was a trip to Ris with the girls. We thought we would have two babies in tow so we booked the first open reservation of the night (5:30pm). Turns out only one child made it to the table. The restaurant was very accommodating and offered a highchair. Not many fine dining restaurants are this kid-friendly (thinking back to our "interesting" experience at Bibiana last year with the baby!) The food was excellent. I am not a fish eater but I joined the group in getting Rockfish. It was not too fishy tasting and was tender. For a started I got the mussles and chorizo. For dessert, I skipped the ice creams and went for chocolate cake. It was delicious! They have some great specials during other times of the year. I hope to return soon since it is so close to my office. ps - they have great happy hour specials as well with $5 glasses of wine. read more

I love that Ris is run by a female chef! In a weird dominated by men, it's good to see a woman holding her own. I came here with co-workers for restaurant week, and although food tends to be subpar for restaurant week, Ris didn't disappoint. We had a variety of dishes, including an excellent seafood dish that I can no longer remember. I also had a flourless chocolate torte that was TO DIE FOR. I noticed that many of the clientele were older, dipping into the ladies who lunch crowd. No matter though because I was too distracted by the food and the decor (decorative padded walls!) to care too much. If you work in Georgetown or Foggy Bottom and have a bit of time for lunch (2hr Friday lunches anyone?), come to Ris. read more

Business dining done right. Came for lunch with a co-worker and were attentively served with an eye on the time. Appetizers were fried green tomatoes and a scallop ceviche. Both were polished off without a scrap left on the plate. The tomatoes were "fancier than what mom makes" but very tasty - according to a North Carolina native - that's a solid review! Scallops were so-so, I'd opt to try something else next time. I had the rabbit bolognese for an entree. This was not memorable. Overly sauced with limpish noodles. Coming again, I'd choose something simpler on the menu to see if there might be better execution. Tiramisu chocolate cake for dessert was indulgent and something I would get again. My colleague had the molten chocolate cake which was popped into the oven on order and got some "mmmm, wows!" read more

Went for the first time since we had tickets for a performance at the Kennedy Center. We had their marquee menu since we arrived well before 630. The grilled trout was delicious, but the accompanying rice did not match the trout's flavor. Had the gnudi as first course and it was good--not great. Lacked a little bit of flavor. Finally for dessert we had the butterscotch pudding was very good, but rather pedestrian. Overall this place was a decent meal at a fair price. Service was pleasant. I doubt I'd go back but would recommend to someone looking for a decent dinner before a show. The marquee menu is a good deal, not sure I could say the same if I had ordered a la carte. read more

Always great service, excellent atmosphere and incredible food selection. We just took some newbies to RIS this past Sunday and they loved it. The food is SO good. Thanks! read more

I came here recently for dinner. The service was attentive, caring, and professional. The drinks were strong and tasty. But the food was bland, WASP food. Lots of butter and salt, and no spice or heat. I tried the Yelp-recommended octopus salad, and was disappointed by the heavily dressed and mostly flavorless octopus. For my main course, I had the salmon. It was cooked to perfection, but utterly devoid of flavor. This may be a great place to take flavorphobes with money burning in their pocket. read more

This review is strictly for brunch, as I haven't treated myself to any other meals at Ris...yet. I came here for brunch with my boyfriend in mid-July after a couple long days of moving into a new apartment. We were absolutely exhausted and probably looked a little rough/underdressed to be tromping into Ris for a nice brunch, but we did it anyways. From our first step in the door, we were treated incredibly well. The hostess was fantastic and brought us to a lovely table. Our waiter greeted us promptly and had mimosas on our table in minutes. And let me just tell you, the mimosas here are INCREDIBLE. They have a couple of different varieties, and they are truly divine. One of them has rosemary, which sounds kind of gross, but is actually one of the most delicious drinks I have ever had in my entire life. I think I had three or four. The best part about the bottomless mimosas is that you change up which kind you get so you can try them all! We order 4-5 small plates to share and each one of them was incredible. Its been a bit too long to remember exactly what we ordered, but I remember the eggs benedict being particularly delicious (I believe we also got a crab benedict, which was super delicious as well). We finished everything off with the carrot cake...SO GOOD. This is hands down the best carrot cake I have ever had. I may return here just to eat the carrot cake and have mimosas. All in all, incredible service, lovely atmosphere, and mind-blowingly yummy food. It was a little pricey and definitely a splurge for me, but it was worth every penny and I would do it again in a heartbeat. read more

3.5 stars, but I am rounding it up to 4 because of the service. I have the tendency to Yelp more about about food, but I must highlight that the night my husband and I dined here we experienced exceptional service, far better than what we have ever received at Marcel's and CItyZen. If I were opening a new restaurant, I would have poached our waiter. Hands down. He was remarkably attentive to every single detail, yet not intrusive. The food was better than what you can expect from a hotel restaurant. The flavors are unique and comforting. Plus points for the bread basket - we got a warm, sliced baguette with cold butter. Dessert was surprisingly refreshing -- even for just ordering their homemade maple-walnut ice-cream with a chocolate coconut macaroon. Delicious! The restaurant has a lot going for it - great, spacious ambiance, medium noise level so it's not too stuffy. However, I agree that it is still a tad bit on the pricey side. I usually have no qualms about paying for high quality food, but I think that I would return to Ris more often if they discounted their prices by a few dollars per dish. read more

$100 for brunch for two, including drinks, during Restaurant Week. I was not aware that Restaurant Week was in play when we made reservations for Sunday brunch. A recent Restaurant Week experience at Passion Fish (Reston) was a disaster on too many fronts to explain. So I was at the same time both excited and concerned when my wife and I ordered from the Restaurant Week menu. She: spicy shrimp over napa cabbage, scallops (3) served with sticky rice and grapefruit and flour less white chocolate cake / raspberry ice cream. Me: heirloom tomato salad with red onions and feta, quail served over fried corn meal and drizzled with an intense veal reduction, and a key lime pie/ cake offering accompanied with blueberries. Every bite, and every taste seemed as though the kitchen was working just for us. The courses were sent out in a timely fashion and we never felt rushed or neglected. Our server, Dan, was awesome keeping our bottom less Mimosas filled and our water glasses topped off. He was attentive - but not overbearing. His service alone is reason enough for a return visit. My tomatoes were juicy and flavorful and paired wonderfully with the feta. My quail was intensely flavorful and the veal reduction was cleaned up by both my wife and I with the crusty bread. My wife raved over every course with particular praise for the perfectly seared sea scallops. All in all a superb dining experience. Restaurant Week or not: we are coming back. read more

I went to Ris for lunch on Restaurant week. It was an excellent experience. The decor is quite nice and the service was very professional. I had the Gnudi, Braised Lamb Shank, and German Chocolate Moose Cake. Everything tasted wonderful. In the appetizer, the ricotta was light and crispy, but melted and blended into the surrounding tomato and eggplant seamlessly. The braised lamb shank (which I'm told is a recipe borrowed with permission from the chef's earlier job) is an incredibly generous portion, incredibly tender and comes off the bone effortlessly, and is a high quality meat (not gamy at all). The pine nuts are a nice touch. The cake at the end was decadent and rich, but I could not stop eating it. I will defiantly go back and try more of this excellent, albeit small, menu. read more

I went to Ris for the first time recently for my birthday dinner and had a lovely experience. The atmosphere and decor are cozy and comfortable while still being chic -- lots of neutral-colored stone and warm woods, but the different textures keep it visually interesting. We had a great server who was friendly, attentive, and efficient. Also, the chef/owner Ris came to our table at one point and introduced herself and chatted with us for a bit, which I thought was very nice. She was pleasant and engaging, and since I'm a bit of a foodie, I felt like I'd met a celebrity, given her impressive reputation in the DC dining scene. The food was wonderful. The mussels which we got as an appetizer were plump and juicy in a delicious tomato, chorizo, garlic broth. Monday nights are meatloaf nights, and don't hesitate to get the special -- it was a perfect example of comfort food at its best. The mushroom pappardelle with brussel sprouts, squash, roasted chestnuts, and parmesan was also quite good, though needed a touch more salt. Finally, the daily special dessert, a white chocolate mousse trifle with berries, was lovely. For all of the delicious things that we had that night, I'm looking forward to returning to try the many other tempting dishes on the menu, particularly the very interesting Portuguese-style skirt steak with an overeasy egg. For the quality of the experience, the prices are quite reasonable. Looking forward to returning! read more

Better can be had elsewhere for the same price, even the discounted price of the prix fixe menu. I would have givenn 2 stars if I had paid the full price. My dinner was ok, but not great. The atmosphere was very nice. My table for two was in a spacious dining room with an expensive-looking decor done in white and tasteful shades of brown. I ordered from the prix fixe menu, which seemed like an amazing deal at $35 (the Soy Lacqueued Cod alone is $28 on the full menu). The dishes I had were: - Swiss Chard and Leek Ravioli. This dish was pretty amazing, definitely the best of the three. Presentation and palette get 5 stars: the leeks were sliced julienne and crispy-caramelized, a great contrast in texture to the creamy goat cheese. Unfortunately, 3 stars for preparation: one of the three ravioli was undercooked and a bit too chewy. - Soy Lacquered Cod. To me, "lacquered" suggests a thick layer of hardened, flavorful sauce. The fish I got was pretty, with an aggressive sear, but I wouldn't have called it "lacquered." It was very moist and tasty enough, but the flavor was very mild. The garnish of beets and rhubarb tasted of beets only. - Butterscotch Pudding. The pudding and whipped cream were grainy. Garnished with crunchy, lacy fried wafers of dark chocolate, whose bitterness was a good complement to the sweetness of the pudding. The small scoop of chocolate ice cream on top tasted great, but it overpowered the delicate flavor of the pudding. read more

Unlike other DC establishments, I feel like you get what you pay for at Ris, which is a solid meal. Nothing to write home about but still very good. Others seem to have gone in with high expectations and so it's understandable that they're disappointed. Also, everyone should know better than to judge a place based on their restaurant week dining experience. read more

RIS is definitely not to be missed. The first thing you notice about RIS is the impeccable service. Our server was well versed about everything on the menu and he could have been working in a Michelin Starred restaurant with his attention to detail. He recommended very interesting dishes to us..the scallop margarita, the ravioli, a interesting charcuterie board with salmon rillettes and pared a interesting wine for us. At the end of our meal, Chef/owner came out to great us. A great evening! read more

Good: The gnudi, the chocolate hazelnut coffee torte (I mean... chocolate hazelnut coffee torte, duh it was delicious). And the house-made ginger beer, mmm! Bad: The service (the waitress was weirdly condescending), the spinach/caramelized onion/gruyère quiche (dry and oddly flavorless compared to its delicious-sounding description). Also, the four ambulances that passed directly in front of us, sirens on full-blast, during our two-hour dinner. Not Ris's fault, but it made al fresco dining a little bit painful. Ugly: The bill, compared to the food/experience. Ouch! read more

They sure know what they're doing at RIS. Their menu is simple, creative and delicious. I'd recommend in a heartbeat for dates, special occasions or business lunches. Open, airy space with gorgeous service. We started with fried green tomatoes and watermelon which was refreshing and full of rich textures. Went on to a perfectly prepared salmon- tender, aromatic and with the skin seared to a crunch. Finished with a peanut chocolate bar and salted caramel ice cream - excellent though the bar is on the heavier side. Love the seasonal menu and can't wait to see what they're cooking up next! read more

There was black hair in my food - hello! I was so excited to come here after reading about the best liver in the city Thursday nights via the Washingtonian. But when the entrée arrived there was a 2 inch black HAIR in the dish. I waited for the waiter to point it out when he questioned if that's what it actually was. He took it back to the kitchen and told me I was in fact correct then explained the kitchen staff wear hats but things happen. They recooked the dish without asking me how I'd like them to correct the incident, but the manager never came over until I asked if she would after being presented with the check. Upon coming over she simply argued of the standard processes they follow rather than accepting the situation. For a nice restaurant with $90 tasting menus one would expect better quality customer service AND better quality dishes. To be fair, the cheese appetizers and cocktails were quiet good. Too bad the experience was overshadowed by not being treated as a valued guest. read more

Food was great. Service was great. A little pricey. They pay attention to detail even on busy days like Valentines Day. Lived in DC for a few years back in the day before I moved. Where should I begin? I guess it's best to say that if you don't mind spending $50 for an unlimited brunch where you only get 4 rounds of drinks and lukewarm small plates of food, this is the place for you. I am a brunching Queen and never in my bottomless life have I been so disappointed. Our server treated us as if we were interrupting her smoke breaks the entire time. Not to mention that while we were flagging down busboys and other servers our server was outside smoking. As for the food, it was tasty however all of our food came out lukewarm and the courses had large gaps in them. Never in my life have a I left a bottomless brunch able to go to Happy Hour and still have drinks and food. One and done for sure! read more

Brought clients here for lunch and had an absolutely horrible experience. I had made reservations and we showed up about 15 minutes early. We were offered a table by the window which was for eight people when we were going to be five. We decided to try to go for a booth instead. The booth had so much duct tape holding it together that it was more duct tape that it was upholstery. It stuck to our suits and was appalling.. When we asked if we could be moved to the table originally offered we were suddenly told that it wasn't available that there was a reservation for a table. This was a course of less than five minutes. Instead of pushing any tables together anything we were seated in the bar.. That was just the beginning. Our server said he had never worked lunch before and only knew the dinner menu so anything we asked him was basically pointless. We asked for a charcuterie board so that it would be on the table when our guests arrived in another 10 minutes. Over 20 minutes later Our guests were at the table and we were wondering where the charcuterie was. It's just sliced meats and cheese it's not like it takes a lot of effort. The manager came by to take our lunch order and was completely unaware that we had ordered anything at all up to that point. She said the server was busy with another big table. That might explain why our food took so horrifically long to come out. I actually had to stop and ask the server if our food was on the way after waiting for about half an hour with no apology, no explanation, and nobody coming to refill drinks unless flagged down. Once the food did arrive, side dishes and condiments were forgotten and took an unreasonably long time to be delivered to the table. The server seemed to make a concerted effort to deliver the correctly cooked burgers to the two people who had ordered them confirming the temperatures that they had ordered. Nevertheless, they were completely wrong.. The experience was terrible and they had to know it and they offered no apology. I won't be going back.. read more

I made a reservation for 8 people for last Sunday about three weeks in advance. By the time Sunday came, I had to add 2 people to the reservation about an hour before we got there. It was no problem at all. THEN 3 people showed up unannounced!!!! Ris was great about accommodating the newcomers--they pulled up a new table and another chair. It was great! The food was GREAT! The smoked salmon bagel was satisfying, the steak and egg was great, and everyone raved about the waffle and the juevos rancheros. EXCELLENT! And one pitcher of White Sangria was enough for five people to get a drink. Only con: although Ris opens at 10:00 AM for brunch on Sundays, they didn't start answering the phone until 11:00, but it was no big deal because they were so accommodating! I will definitely go back! read more

Oh, man! This place was so great! We went to RIS on an early Saturday evening and sat at the bar. We were promptly greeted by two very nice-looking young men, Noel and Tyler, who were really fine bartenders and very personable. They were very helpful as to what to order off the menu (full menu at the bar) and they weren't wrong in their suggestions! We ordered: - Scallop Margarita (ceviche): lime marinated scallops with chilies, orange, avocado and tequila ice. This stuff is amazing and rich!! - Grilled Octopus Salad: on Greek yogurt with feta dressing, cucumber, cured lemon, spinach and croutons. So tender and flavorful, perfect! - Pine Nut Crusted Wild Alaska Halibut: asparagus, prosciutto and mushrooms with feta, cured lemon and olive oil potatoes We really did enjoy being there, mostly because Noel and Tyler were a lot of fun to talk with about music, etc. We stayed and stayed, having great wine, drinks, and good conversation all evening. Speaking of wine...the Sophenia Malbec is DELISH!! And I learned how much I love Mescal Tequila! I had their El Buho....oh, kids, I'm telling you...it's just smoky warm goodness that goes all the way to your toes after you drink it! And no nasty headache the next day. :) So, when you are in DC, definitely look this place up and sit at the bar while having some real conversation with the bartenders - oh, and don't let any of the stodgy "regulars" deter you from enjoying your visit to this great place! read more

One of my favorite restaurants in DC. It has become my go-to for business meals, dates, and just a relaxing night out. The cocktails and constantly rotating menu are both fantastic. Dinner with my wife while waiting for our daughter to give birth at a nearby hospital. We enjoyed a bottle of a very nice Austrian wine. Appetizers included an exceptional charcuterie plate and the scallop margarita (civichie) which was even better. Spinach ravioli and crab cakes for entrees. Both were presented beautifully and well worth the price. Oddly our only criticism was that the portions were too large. The great food was complemented by exceptional service and hospitality. Chef-owned, and Chef is usually in the building, it is one of the best restaurants in West End. Chef Lacoste has been involved in several top eateries in the city, including Kinkeads and 1789. My girlfriend ordered the meatloaf special and said it was decadent. Then again last night she went with her husband and got the pot pie.
