Our Captain Steven was on top of the entire service, his direction of the back waiters and front servers, was an exercise in non obtrusive service. The front of the house are like ninjas They suddenly are there one minute and gone in the next 12 minutes. Our Appetizers were excellent great variety of choices we opted for the Pan Seared Divers Scallops, the salads were tasty and fill d with healthy fresh vegetables. My Mushroom Tartine was earthy and resonate of shallots and herbs. The only noticeable difference was in the Waygu Steak Tartare. It was made with small pieces of fillet rather than a finely minced version that would emulsify with the other ingredients instead of separating. We were anxious to sample some new menu choices since our visit about this time last year. All of the entrees provided just the right amount of flavor and texture. The Halibut in Brioche was the clear winner. The Duck confit was highly praised by one of my companions. Two members of our party ordered the Filet with Trumpet Mushrooms and a rich Demi Glacé. The Rack of lamb was like visiting an old friend and was as memorable as an old friend reconnecting. Dessert choices were all decadent and the ice cream trio was so tasty and it featured house made ice cream flavors. The 1789 is definitely a destination dining spot . We celebrated our anniversary at 1789 Restaurant and it was absolutely perfect. The setting is intimate and romantic; ideal for a special night. The food was phenomenal. My husband had the venison and I ordered the lamb; both were stunning in presentation and even better in flavor. Every bite felt thoughtful and elevated. My friend and I arrived to our Restaurant Week (Winter 2026) reservation this past Monday and truly enjoyed our experience at 1789. The food was great, and the service was top-notched. The RW dinner was priced at 65pp for three-courses: appetizer, entree, and dessert. The two of us decided to order different things in each category so we can family-style to try as many options as possible. Before we got our food, we were served complimentary bread and butter. There were two types of bread, one that was oat based with a wheaty flavor and an herb-forward, savory option. Personally, I didn't like the rough and hard texture of the former nor the herb combination of the latter. However, the whipped butter was fantastic -- it was lightly salted and incredibly airy. -- APPETIZER -- WAGYU TARTARE The quail egg sat on top of the tartare, which we mixed in thoroughly before we dug in. The tartare had lots of umami (thanks to the black garlic aioli). There was a lot of crunch in each bite, with some dill/pickle-y flavors that I really enjoyed. I would have happily eaten the whole puck of tartare on my own, but unfortunately, I had to share with my friend. There were some potato chips on the side that we used to enjoy the tartare with. The chips were good, but I don't think it added much to the tartare. NEW BEDFORD SCALLOPS (+5) There were only two scallops per order, but it was seared perfectly with a bit of char on top and a soft, buttery interior that melted in my mouth. I was surprised to see how well it went with the squash and preserved lemon gremolata, which reminded me of the classic Chinese dried tangerine peel (Chenpi 陈皮). This was a unique combination that I appreciated. The only thing I didn't love was the crispy kale which was really oily and didn't add much to the overall dish. -- ENTREE -- ALASKAN HALIBUT VERONIQUE The halibut was topped with thin slices of grape, in between two pomme rösti (crispy Swiss potato flat cakes) with a generous amount of cream-based sauce. The halibut was perfectly cooked -- incredibly delicate, soft, and tender, which we both were impressed by. The sauce had a pleasant citrus flavor, which paired well with the halibut and the crispy, finely grated potato. This was a lighter entree option and more innovative in terms of flavor and combination of ingredients. BRAISED SHORT RIB Classic short rib and mashed potatoes combination, but elevated. The short rib was savory and melted in my mouth without much chewing required. The potatoes were incredibly buttery and smooth, with hints of cheesiness that was incredibly addictive. The maitake and oyster mushrooms were earthy and delightful. This entree is on the heavier side and more of an elevated classic. -- DESSERT -- ORANGE SPICE CAKE Lots of orange components. The cake is made with oranges, topped with orange compote and some blood orange granita on the side. I enjoyed the cake, which was soft and moist, but the orange compote mixed with the caramel was too sweet for me. The blood orange granita was light and cold, which helped balance the cake out. Still, I enjoyed it despite the sweetness level. LEMON CHEESECAKE Great presentation! The lemon cheesecake looked more like a mousse -- light and whipped with a strong lemon flavor. I liked the tanginess from the candied ginger that were generously sprinkled on top of the cheesecake, which paired well with the sweet and tart pomegranate sauce. There were a few lemon-ginger pavlova on the side that we enjoyed eating on its own. Overall, solid dessert option -- we personally liked this one more. I like that 1789's RW menu is pretty reflective of their current menu, which I appreciate. The food was fantastic, and we liked every dish we tried. It's officially DMV's restaurant week and 1789 has been on my list of restaurants to try for awhile. I got to go with one of my best friend's and we really enjoyed their menu. We shared scallops (not bad), and crude was really light and refreshing. She ordered the halibut (by far my favorite for the night) and the lamb --which was good but really heavy for me. Probably would recommend it for the men that are hungry. For dessert I had the deconstructed cheesecake and my friend had the chocolate ganache. We also purchased drinks (I think her cocktail was called first date?) and mine was the continental. I like my alcohol a bit stronger so I really enjoyed hers more. Service from the hostess could have been better. They called 30 minutes before our reservation as I originally wanted a table of 4 with friends but they told me they had only a table of 2 available. 30 minutes is definitely not enough time to gather my 2 other friends to swing by, I think that was poor timing on their end. I took my new fiancé to 1789 for her birthday and it was such a phenomenal experience! Our waiter, Kyle, did such a great job of taking care of us and being very welcoming with us! I love that the focus was on her for her birthday and then even more after we discussed that we just got engaged the day before! He help recommend an amazing white wine and then went over the menu, and also gave her a special "Happy Birthday" menu, and helped us make very informed choices. Let's just start with the butter... it was soooo smooth and silky and was whipped and whipped and then it seems whipped again. And that's just the butter. From there we had the Wagyu Tartare, which came with Black Garlic Aioli, Quail Egg & Gaufrette Potato, which was incredibly tasty as well as very filling and a good sized portion to share! Following, we chose the Hudson Valley Foie Gras with Cherry Mostarda, Brioche, & Duck Jus. It was perfectly laid out and was so rich in flavor! She chose the Pekin Duck Breast with Confit Ravioli, Broccolini & Carrot-Gochujang Glaze. HUGE PORTION! But just like the rest, rich in flavor and she LOVED IT! Of course, I chose the New Zealand Venison with Balsamic-Port Reduction, King Trumpet & Potato Pavé, and it was SOOOOO AMAZING! It was a very hefty portion and the crust of it just exploded with flavor! They followed it up with a couple of coconut chocolates and a Happy Birthday and Congratulations chocolates for her as well! Dinner at @ in Georgetown. My uncle took us to one of his favorite restaurants and wow was it good. Menu is not large, but every dish is executed very well. I am typically not a fan of snails, but the escargot here were amazing! The trout had a perfect crisp skin, while still maintaining a juicy, flakey center. The ambiance has a 1940s vibe, dark wood, low ceilings with what sounded like the soundtrack to the Notebook. Service was top notch with several staff checking in on us, without being overbearing. Came here for restaurant week and this was hands-down the best deal, best meal, best menu for restaurant week. I'm so surprised I've never heard of this restaurant. Of course it's a little gem tucked away in Georgetown. I was blow away by everything.. the food, drinks, service were all 10 out of 10. I've now added this to my list of favorite restaurants in DC. I came here with three friends and we each got something different off the menu so we could try as many items as possible. For appetizers, you must get the ravioli. I don't even like ravioli but one of my friends ordered it and it was amazing. So rich with flavor, it was a wonderful punch in your mouth. Honestly, you can go wrong with anything on the menu. We enjoyed every dish. We sat next to the bar, and the bartender mixed us great drinks. The staff super courteous, and overall just a great vibe. This is a great spot to impress a date that loves good food or bring family from out of town or just a spot you want to go to on the regular. This is one of the best meals I've had in DC. read more

It was my birthday and a friend was taking me out, so I was really hoping for a great experience. We had an 8:15pm reservation, but our table wasn't ready when we arrived. We were sent to the bar, which initially seemed fine since there were 2 open seats. Unfortunately, we sat there for about 15 minutes without any acknowledgment. No drink menu, no greeting, nothing. The bartender was busy, but a simple "I'll be right with you" would have gone a long way. We would have gladly ordered drinks while waiting. At 8:33pm, the host finally came over and seated us. We were honestly close to leaving at that point. Once seated, it took another 5 to 7 minutes before anyone greeted us. We ordered a bottle of wine right away, but then had to repeat the order again a few minutes later when they came back to confirm it. We placed our full food order at that time, assuming the wine would arrive first. It didn't. We ordered the Spring Harvest Salad, which listed candied pecans, but it came out with no candied pecans and instead had beets, which weren't mentioned. The server apologized and said both were supposed to be included. A side of pecans eventually came, but only after we had finished the salad, and they weren't even candied. On top of that, the salad arrived before the wine, which felt sloppy. The lamb chops appetizer was excellent and easily one of the highlights of the night. For mains, my friend ordered the duck medium rare and I ordered the halibut. The halibut came out undercooked. I pointed it out immediately and was told it should be closer to well done. They took it back and returned brought it back, but fish had a harsh, acidic bite that made it difficult to eat. I ate about a third and declined a replacement. Nothing was comped despite the issue. Meanwhile, my friend's duck was cold by the time they brought my halibut. The desserts were great. The lemon lavender tart and rocky road were both standout items and ended the meal on a positive note. Overall, the experience felt disorganized and inattentive, especially for a place at this level. Some good food, but too many service and execution issues to ignore. I would rate it 3.4 out of 5. read more

1789 is still one of my favorite restaurants. This time, my date and I on a whim decided to go without reservations. The restaurant takes their reservations seriously and said they only had room at the bar. The brioche crusted halibut is still exquisite. Also the bartender graciously made me a French Blonde even though he had never done so before. He nailed it. The dessert of a bananas foster was more deconstructed but still decadent. I gave the 1789 restaurant a go after hearing good things about it. I took the opportunity to try it during restaurant week. I will start off with the inside, the decor was a very unique design it was like entering an old time like village. The plate setting and seat arrangements are very well thought out and planned that nobody feels like they are truly on top of each other. The service is another thing I will rate highly, they were very attentive and interactive. Gave great recommendations and pairings for the deserts. As for the food, I really enjoyed having the Wagyu tarter, that was a good combination of flavors that didn't overpower each other. The only thing I was not a fan of was the wagyu rib, the flavor really reminding me of an average pulled pork sandwich. The vegetables and spinach and carrot sauce were great and had great flavor but I don't think paired well with the wagyu rib in my opinion. I would recommend getting something else especially at the price point. The desert was I think by far the best! Fluffy and tasted exactly as described, I would highly recommend getting that. Overall a great experience, if you have the funds to come and experience the food do so, I don't know when I'll be back as it is very pricy for two but if it ever fits my budget for a fancy dinner date out I would consider dropping bye. read more

We are a group that has been going to 1789 every Christmas season for over 20 years. Our latest visit was extremely disappointing. Two of us started with glasses of wine, one got sparkling wine, and one got a mock cocktail. Our server poured the two glasses of wine. A few minutes later a different server poured the sparkling wine. It took another five to ten minutes for the cocktail to arrive. So, we had to wait awkwardly to toast the holidays together. The drinks should all have arrived at the same time. One of us asked how many scallops came with the scallops appetizer and could it be expanded to an entree. Three of us heard that it came with three, and a fourth could be added to make it an entree. That's what she ordered. Two of us asked to share the salad. But they brought us two plates and expected us to split it ourselves at the table. My wife rightly sent it back, telling them that a restaurant of this caliber should split the salad in the kitchen, which they did. Then we waited for (no exaggeration) at least an hour for our entrees! We got only a "thank you for your patience" rather than an apology and explanation. We opted to skip dessert and coffee because the meal had gone on so long, so they missed out on us ordering those. The last straw came when the bill came. They charged $64 for the scallops, saying that there were two scallops in the appetizer, and they had doubled it to four, so the price had gone from $32 to $64. $64 for four scallops that probably cost at most about $10 at Whole Foods! The server claimed that we had misheard what she had said about how many were in the appetizer. I think our traditional celebration will be moving on to another restaurant. read more

To feed two of us, we ordered the scallops and oysters to start, the waygu short ribs with sides of seasonal vegetables and brussels sprouts, and their chocolate dessert to finish. Each dish was a more unique take on American classics and my wife said the oysters were the best she's ever had! We took advantage of the restaurant week dinner. She had the scallops in a coconut lime sauce, and enjoyed them. I had the octopus which had a perfect texture. Not too firm or rubbery which happens when they are overcooked. For entrees we shared a NY strip steak and the halibut. Portion size on both entrées was small, but both dishes were otherwise flawless. The steak had parsnip purée, Swiss chard , mushrooms, all in a pepper reduction. The fish had firm wheat berries, grilled leaks and fennel. We had a pear tart for dessert. It had poached pear which I found hard to taste, and almond tart that was nice. It was the least successful item we tried. Our other dessert was chocolate mousse that was very well done with a small amount of raspberry custard. The other components didn't contribute much. It was a brown butter old fashion with Buffalo Trace bourbon, it literally was to die for! For my meal I chose the way beef tartare, and it did not disappoint. For my entree I chose the Braised Waygu short rib with sweet potato purée, kale, and petite heirloom carrots, all cooked to perfection. My 2nd experience was better than my first and my first was great. I went for my birthday. The restaurant was decorated nicely for the holiday season. We were seated right away. Sat in the saloon. Our waitress was knowledgeable of the menu and specials. She was attentive and kind. They have a birthday menu. Which is a nice touch. It's the regular menu but it says Happy Birthday at the top. After spending the afternoon at the car show, my wife and I drove across town to have dinner at 1789. They are located in a quiet part of Georgetown a little bit off the beaten path. There are no nearby parking garages leaving you to find street parking which thankfully was easy on a Sunday evening. Their website mentions a valet service but it was not available this particular evening. From the outside, the restaurant looks for the most part like a townhouse blending into the surroundings quite well. Once inside the door, you still feel like you are outside with a faux exterior of an older looking house. To the right is a staircase up to I don't know what. To the left a small area with a full size bar and straight ahead their cozy dining room. Don't dawdle too long in this area as you may get hit by a door from someone leaving the bar room like I did. The dining room has perhaps a dozen tables in a beautiful little room with a welcoming fireplace. The space felt bigger and it was easy to have a private quiet conversation. Lighting was on the darker side and made it a little difficult to easily read the menu. Speaking of the menu, it was restaurant week with a three course fixed price meal. Our server told us it was all their regular selections for the most part. The choices were surprisingly varied with lots of options. They also provided a wine list along with several nice choices by the glass. Our server offered her suggestions as well based on what we were thinking about having. My wife got a Merlot and Cab Franc blend from Bordeaux and I got a Rioja Reserva that I thoroughly enjoyed. To start, we both selected a crispy lobster appetizer with Thai basil, papaya and cabbage. It looked amazing and tasted even better. There were several distinct flavors and textures all existing in complete harmony. For our entrees, my wife followed our server's recommendation and ordered the roasted rack of lamb and I the Duo of Beef. The rack of lamb arrived on top of a bed of couscous with a couple of onions and an eggplant purée. She remarked how good everything tasted and how well it all went together. My Duo of Beef was made up of a couple of slices of NY strip and small portion of braised short rib on top of a sweet potato purée. The steak was very flavorful and the perfect temperature. The short rib was delicious as well. The portions were a little small for me but did leave room for an amazing desert. For dessert, we went our separate ways. My wife is a sucker for cheesecake and I opted for a dark chocolate cake. Despite looking quite pale and bland, the cylindrical shaped cheesecake and white maple ice cream balls were awesome. My chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream was super rich and super yummy. Service was on point the entire evening. This place was such a disappointment. Our server was rude never checked on us and had an attitude when we asked her to reheat food that was served very cold. It was extremely expensive and extremely underwhelming for what you got. I would not go back here nor would I recommend it to anyone. Our appetizer was good, or entrée was not. I'd love to leave this gem of. Restaurant 10 stars! From the moment we walked in the door the hospitality was outstanding! It is a relatively small, quaint, historic atmosphere with nuances that the you back in time to the foundation of our nation. The food was delicious with impeccable presentation. Our entree of Dover Sole was wonderful. But as good as the food was, the service was even better! We enjoyed several wonderful moments with Kyle, our main server, who gave great recommendations. When we left the restaurant, we left knowing we had made a new friend! Steven, the head waiter gave us a wonderful lesson on the building's history. I look forward to our next visit when the rack of lamb that passed by looking incredibly tasty will be next on my list! This is a must for fine dining in DC!! read more

Overall amazing experience - high quality food and fantastic service. My family and I came here for an evening weekend dinner and had a lovely time. The staff was great, the food was exceptional (excellent taste, wide range flavors, and they were not stingy on portion sizes like other more high-end restaurants). Drinks were delicious as well. I'd recommend the tuna appetizer - so flavorful - and the duck entree. You really can't go wrong. The ambiance is lovely and feels very cozy. Would absolutely recommend this place. read more
