It's officially DMV's restaurant week and 1789 has been on my list of restaurants to try for awhile. I got to go with one of my best friend's and we really enjoyed their menu. We shared scallops (not bad), and crude was really light and refreshing. She ordered the halibut (by far my favorite for the night) and the lamb --which was good but really heavy for me. Probably would recommend it for the men that are hungry. For dessert I had the deconstructed cheesecake and my friend had the chocolate ganache. We also purchased drinks (I think her cocktail was called first date?) and mine was the continental. I like my alcohol a bit stronger so I really enjoyed hers more. Service from the hostess could have been better. They called 30 minutes before our reservation as I originally wanted a table of 4 with friends but they told me they had only a table of 2 available. 30 minutes is definitely not enough time to gather my 2 other friends to swing by, I think that was poor timing on their end. It'd beautiful and intimate in the restaurant. A very good place for date night.

I took my new fiancé to 1789 for her birthday and it was such a phenomenal experience! Our waiter, Kyle, did such a great job of taking care of us and being very welcoming with us! I love that the focus was on her for her birthday and then even more after we discussed that we just got engaged the day before! He help recommend an amazing white wine and then went over the menu, and also gave her a special "Happy Birthday" menu, and helped us make very informed choices. Let's just start with the butter... it was soooo smooth and silky and was whipped and whipped and then it seems whipped again. And that's just the butter. From there we had the Wagyu Tartare, which came with Black Garlic Aioli, Quail Egg & Gaufrette Potato, which was incredibly tasty as well as very filling and a good sized portion to share! Following, we chose the Hudson Valley Foie Gras with Cherry Mostarda, Brioche, & Duck Jus. It was perfectly laid out and was so rich in flavor! She chose the Pekin Duck Breast with Confit Ravioli, Broccolini & Carrot-Gochujang Glaze. HUGE PORTION! But just like the rest, rich in flavor and she LOVED IT! Of course, I chose the New Zealand Venison with Balsamic-Port Reduction, King Trumpet & Potato Pavé, and it was SOOOOO AMAZING! It was a very hefty portion and the crust of it just exploded with flavor! They followed it up with a couple of coconut chocolates and a Happy Birthday and Congratulations chocolates for her as well! This was our first time there and even more, Kyle gave us a recommendation and a personal referral for a place he highly recommended. This was such a great experience and we cannot wait to check out his recommendation!!!

    Congratulations!

First Visit to 1789 Restaurant & Bar - A Memorable Experience This was my first time dining at 1789 Restaurant & Bar, and I was pleasantly surprised. From the moment I arrived, the 1789 Team made me feel right at home with their stellar service. The food was absolutely incredible, and the libations were top-notch. The atmosphere is charming--like taking a step back in time. The restaurant is cozy, warm, and filled with character. I'll definitely be returning! If you're ever in the area...GET SOME!

Nothing wrong with the restaurant per se. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't exceptional either. It was just ....expensive for no reason. It was plated ok, not too bad. My lamb lacked flavor. The entire dish lacked flavor. The restaurant is somewhere I'd take the elders in my family. The restaurant is very clean and quaint, but not trendy, modern or hip. It's going for upscale but doesn't quite hit that mark either. The staff was cool. After spending $250, I was still hungry. Left, walked around Georgetown a little and then went to 90 second pizza.

Incredible experience again at 1789! The dining room is very cozy with the big fireplace and historic vibes. Service was amazing all night - our servers made great recommendations for each of our courses (great restaurant week menu). Entire meal was incredible from cocktails and apps to the main course and dessert. Highly recommend the lobster bisque, filet, rockfish, and gelatos/sorbets!

Dinner at @ in Georgetown. My uncle took us to one of his favorite restaurants and wow was it good. Menu is not large, but every dish is executed very well. I am typically not a fan of snails, but the escargot here were amazing! The trout had a perfect crisp skin, while still maintaining a juicy, flakey center. The Pineapple Upside Down Cake was also really good as well! Great spot for a date night with great service! The ambiance has a 1940s vibe, dark wood, low ceilings with what sounded like the soundtrack to the Notebook. Service was top notch with several staff checking in on us, without being overbearing. The food was delicious and fresh. My favorite was the New Bedford Scallops. The sauce was sweet, salty and tart. I also enjoyed the fresh bread, which helped me wipe the bouillabaisse off my branzino dish. We received a complimentary birthday dessert along with a copy of the menu rolled up like a scroll as a keepsake. Recommended for a special occasion for sure.

So I went here for restaurant week and wow what a pick! This place is so good! It's a perfect date night, friends night etc. Ambiance is cute and romantic, dimly lit and cozy. The food? No complaints beginning to end. We got steak, halibut and the short rib and literally all of us were so satisfied. Food super flavorful. And a cute place to get good food. Service was on point too.

1789 is still one of my favorite restaurants. This time, my date and I on a whim decided to go without reservations. The restaurant takes their reservations seriously and said they only had room at the bar. The brioche crusted halibut is still exquisite. Also the bartender graciously made me a French Blonde even though he had never done so before. He nailed it. The dessert of a bananas foster was more deconstructed but still decadent. The only negatives is that the bread isn't as good as before Covid and we weren't treated to any amuse bouche like before.

I gave the 1789 restaurant a go after hearing good things about it. I took the opportunity to try it during restaurant week. I will start off with the inside, the decor was a very unique design it was like entering an old time like village. The plate setting and seat arrangements are very well thought out and planned that nobody feels like they are truly on top of each other. The service is another thing I will rate highly, they were very attentive and interactive. Gave great recommendations and pairings for the deserts. As for the food, I really enjoyed having the Wagyu tarter, that was a good combination of flavors that didn't overpower each other. The only thing I was not a fan of was the wagyu rib, the flavor really reminding me of an average pulled pork sandwich. The vegetables and spinach and carrot sauce were great and had great flavor but I don't think paired well with the wagyu rib in my opinion. I would recommend getting something else especially at the price point. The desert was I think by far the best! Fluffy and tasted exactly as described, I would highly recommend getting that. Overall a great experience, if you have the funds to come and experience the food do so, I don't know when I'll be back as it is very pricy for two but if it ever fits my budget for a fancy dinner date out I would consider dropping bye.

They have a great list of unique rotating flavors, and it's always fun to come back to try out their new seasonal releases. A few of my favorites over the years have been their hibiscus sorbet -- a delightful dairy-free addition to their Hispanic Heritage Month flavors that is the perfect balance of tangy and sweet -- the cinnamon cardamom -- a super spiced ice cream that, despite being freezing cold, feels like you're about to drink a warm beverage -- and blueberry sour cream crumble. When I'm feeling less adventurous, they also have a really solid strawberry ice cream that uses real berries (none of that artificial nonsense you see in grocery stores) with a delightful fruity, slightly tangy flavor. There's usually a pretty long line, but it moves quite quickly since they don't allow samples. It's also a small space that gets crowded pretty easily, so I'd recommend taking your ice cream to go and enjoying it as you walk around Mt Pleasant or on the benches just below the entrance to Mount Desert.

New Addition to my Ice Cream Mount Rushmore…read more When a friend heard I was heading into surgery, they sent a Yala ice cream care package via Uber Eats. I honestly didn't realize Uber Eats could deliver high-end ice cream--that is dangerous knowledge for an aficionado with limited self-control. I usually have a strict "Fridays only" rule to self-impose some restraint, but those rules go out the window during recovery. (A quick note: the surgery was nothing serious--just finally fixing a skiing failure from Breckenridge back in February.) To give some context on my palate: 6 out of 10 times, I'm ordering vanilla. I resent when people call it "plain vanilla"--vanilla done right is a complex, detailed flavor all on its own. 2 out of 10 times, I'm ordering something with peanut butter (ever since E.T. 'phoned home', I've had a Reese's problem). For the final 2 out of 10, I'll be adventurous with fruit or something unique. I didn't have much prior knowledge of Greek ice cream traditions, so I did some digging. Traditional Greek ice cream (Kaimaki) is often chewy and elastic, but Yala takes a modern approach for DC. They've hit a "middle ground" texture--creamy like American ice cream but light like gelato. They use A2 dairy from South Mountain Creamery, which makes it incredibly smooth and much easier to digest. After a few days of sampling, Yala is firmly within my ice cream pantheon and established on my "Mount Rushmore" alongside Adrian's Custard in Wisconsin and Oberweis in Chicago. I did my tastings "blind"--meaning I looked at it, but I did not read the foundational ingredients before eating and reviewing. Here are the reviews for the four flavors: Mornings with Thea (Orange Label) My daughter led the charge here, describing it as a "tropical orange cream" that felt like a "wave of summer" with a sophisticated, creamy "winter undertone." My own take was that it tasted like a bougie, orange creamcicle, but with incredible orange chunks. I thought it was candied orange zest, which was new to me and amazing, I also thought I caught hints of peach layered in. I later learned these are traditional Greek orange preserves (spoon sweets) swirled into a yogurt and vanilla base. Yia Mas (Pink Label) I'll be honest: I don't even like cherries, and I first thought these were raspberries. But this was fantastic. It has tart wild cherries swirled into a Greek yogurt and vanilla base. The fruit is succulent and pops against the creamy background. American Dream (Brown Label) A blend of "Papou's Promise" vanilla and "Choco-Yala" chocolate. The chocolate pieces are crisp and have a nice crunch, providing a perfect structural contrast to the smooth vanilla. Mint Chip Mou (Green Label) I've always thought of mint chip as a holiday flavor, but this version felt perfect for March. The color is a soft, spring-like green--not an artificial iridescent glow. When first scooped, the aroma pops into the air, similar to the zest of a a ripe, juicy tangerine when you peel it (the effect, not the the flavor or smell). The mint is light and dreamy rather than a full frontal assault, and the small chocolate pieces are a compliment, not a competitor, providing a nice lingering aftertaste. I was floored to find out that "spring" color comes naturally from spinach! The common thread across all these flavors is that they are well-blended, yet the components stand out independently in the profile. It is a masterpiece of textures and tones; the chocolate or the fruit isn't "mushed" into the ice cream but exists as a separate, wonderful experience floating in an ice cream or yogurt environment. I resisted the Yelp urge to rank these against each other, there were no disappointments. Obviously, Papou's Promise vanilla tops my hit list for next to try, I want to compare Greek Blue Summer against my favorite blueberry pie ice cream from Oberweis, and I'd would love to sample anything peanut butter related if they put something out as a seasonal special! A huge thanks again to my kind friend for the recovery fuel. I'm already planning to organize future ice cream socials here for friends and colleagues once I'm back on my feet. Yala is the real deal. #YalaGreekIceCream #GeorgetownDC #IceCreamConnoisseur #GreekDessert #A2Dairy #MountRushmoreOfIceCream #GeorgetownEats #VanillaDoneRight
