I always wondered about Nagasaki Champon since it seems Chinese but not. Tonight I learned from reading the menu about the origins of this curious dish which is supposed to have been started in Dejima, Japan during the mid Meiji period by a Chinese restaurant to serve a cheap and nutritious meal to the poor Chinese students living there at the time. Naruhodo! I've been wanting to check out RH for a while so I was happy to get invited for dinner. Originally I thought Champon was the dry crispy noodles you cover with the slimy cornstarchy gravy and other goodies like shrimp or pork and veggies. Apparently that is what they call Saraudon. We wanted something hot and soupy so both of us got the Nagasaki Champon which was a bowl of mild tonkotsu broth with lots of veges including corn and cabbage, kakuni pork, shrimp, and Kamaboko. I thought the broth lacked umami but in hindsight I was glad it didn't have MSG and you can always add shoyu or shichimi if you want . Loved all the veges though the cabbage was very crunchy. Unlike most peeps I am not a huge fan of pork belly because it's usually too fatty. However I was very impressed with the kakuni here which they boil for a long time to render the fat. It was well marinated and tasty with out being oily. For $5.50 you can add on a 6 piece gyoza which is nice and crispy on the outside. The inside is a tasty bundle of meat, rice noodles and veges. The dainty size makes you feel less guilty. If you have a coupon you can get a free drink or gift. So happy that I was finally able to use the coupon book that's been riding around forgotten lost in my car . I got a "Eat vegetables and be healthy" eco bag that I found oddly cute. read more

Quick and fast service here. We walked in @6pm and we were seated immediately. We ordered our usual order of Nagasaki Champon and Kake Udon. We added a one piece side of shrimp tempura and deep fried gyoza. The udon and noodles were served hot and tasty as usual. The shrimp tempura and gyoza were brought to our table @4 minutes later. Both were served hot. The tempura batter was crispy and not heavy. The gyoza are small and tasty. Ambiance took a hit today as we were seated next to a bucket of what appeared to be water leaking from the ceiling. Not a great mood pleaser lol. Our cups of ice water were refilled and we were checked on during our stay. The only negative was that I had ordered my udon without green onions, but my order came with green onions that I fished out of my udon. Tried this eatery for the first time and overall positive, although different. It offers some rather unique dishes that look familiar, but tasted a little different. Example, their gyoza were mire on the crispy side. And their tendon like dish came with super sweet dipping sauce that was more for yakiniku than tempura. It has been several months since we noticed the Ringer Hut food stall moving from its original location in Ala Moana's Makai Market Food Hall to its dine-in restaurant at the street level facing Kona Street. Although we'd previously eaten at their food hall stall, we finally ate at this new restaurant. Eating here meant more to us this time since we had stopped in Nagasaki, Japan, during our April cruise, where we saw the famous "Spectacle Bridge" that we associated with Ringer Hut. This restaurant is busy, and crowd control is managed by signing in on the wait list inside the restaurant entrance past the Noren curtain. Their service is efficient and welcoming. The authentic Nagasaki noodle dishes are generously portioned, tasty, and represent good value for your money. FOOD: Deep-fried Gyoza: As you can guess, my deep-fried food-loving husband zeroed in on this appetizer. The hot-from-the-fryer, crispy, and plump gyozer was served on a platter which included a condiment dish for a soy sauce and vinegar dip. The server delivered the platter fresh from the kitchen and we could still see the steam rising from the gyoza so we waited a few minutes before taking a bite. The gyoza were properly filled with a lightly seasoned and juicy pork filling. A quick dip into the soy sauce and vinegar mixture enhanced the pork flavor and also cut the oiliness from the deep fried wrapper. 6/$5.99 -Nagasaki Champon: I had a craving for noodle soup or ramen so I ordered the REGULAR portion of Nagasaki-origin noodle soup dish called "Champon." I never ate here before at their previous location and since opening in Ala Moana, they were always packed or had a line outside so I'm like, "ok my turn to try" and I'm glad to say that I think I found a decently priced Tempura Donburi that I actually enjoyed. Their portions are such a good size that I struggle to finish all the rice sometimes (but we don't waste here so we just inhale and suffer later) Their dipping sauce is such a nice sweet soy that I just end up pouring it all over the bowl. Returned for a second time and I found my go to. On this visit I chose the tempura donburi. From the picture on the menu, it clearly shows a lot of fried food so I knew what I was gonna get.....a lot of fried food. I don't get it when people order something, get what they ordered, and complain there is too much fried food. Hello! You're supposed to get fried food in a TEMPURA donburi. I got (3) shrimp tempura, one bell pepper, one squash, and one large fish cake tempura. ALL were fried to perfection. Rice was on point and sticky. As soon as she tasted the broth, she knew it wasn't as good as she remembered. She expected a refreshing, light taste, whereas today's soup was thicker and sweeter than she would have liked. She left much of the food uneaten. As for my Saraudon, I was a bit surprised by the thin, crispy noodles underneath the toppings, but I was able to finish it. A casual place to get lunch. Lots of seating for intimate or groups. They even have a designated seating area against the wall for people wanting to enjoy a meal on their own. My husband and I, regrettably now, decided on this place instead of the food court, because you know what a s**t show it can be there. We agreed on the spicy tan tan and had high expectations. I've never tried ringer hut when they were at the mall, so I figured maybe it's a good time to try it now they have a store! I'm glad I went with my family so I could sample a few dishes. We ordered the ramen, tonkatsu, chicken karaage and the crispy champon with gravy. My favorite was the crispy champon - it tastes pretty good but nothing special really, reminded me of the Cantonese crispy noodles with gravy but not as umami. The ramen noodles didn't have a good texture and the broth was a bit lackluster. The fried food weren't as juicy inside as I hoped. I wish I could like this place enough to make it a regular spot. I'm trying to make sense of why the food here seems so much better than when I supposedly had the same food when they were in the food court?! Because the Nagasaki Champon with extra veggies was so good! It was good before but its remarkable now. Lots of cabbage, onion, and bean sprouts. And their teriyaki chicken was very good too, coated in a thick, sweet and savory sauce, and served over rice and with some scrambled egg on top. I wouldn't hesitate to order either of those again. Moved on up... And out of Makai Market down the road to their own space and it's beautiful! I've been anticipating and waiting patiently for it's grand opening and it's finally here woohoo! Honestly I've never been to the Makai Market location as Nagasaki Champon is commonly known for their seafood which I'm allergic to but is mom's favorite. Well here they are and it seems not only they expanded out on their own but the menu as well so I decided to take her and give this place a try. We did go later hoping it wouldn't be crowded and no it didn't have a crowd but was about third in line on the waitlist which is provided right outside and you just sign up on your own. Walking in it was very nice and bright it's all table service with staff working it quite well as they do have their primary duties though are doing others as well when needed. Upon ordering I explained my allergies though they will NOT guarantee any cross contamination and not sure because they're very new but is a concern for those that are very allergic. I decided on the Okonomiyaki style Saraudon (No Shrimp) and took my chances with this dish which is a super crispy noodle which is typically served with a thick gravy topping that will slowly soften the noodle bringing in the perfect texture together and what a fun twist it was as it came with the usual okonomiyaki toppings and I loved it the mayo and shaved bonito gave it that unique touch of umami. Mom got the Nagasaki Champon which was actually pretty sad the toppings looked sparse than what she remembered, shrimp...meh! She ended up wanting to give my dish a try and preferred it over hers lol! They do also have curry, donburi, udon, ramen and teishoku set meals. New ramen restaurant on the street level of Ala Moana. While this place is new, it's related to the former Champon ramen shop, that used to be in the food court. Most importantly, the food is really good! The Nagasaki Champon ramen (in my case, with extra vegetables) was wonderful! The broth was very flavorful and delicious! The noodles were a little thicker than the average ramen noodle (i like them thicc) and the bowl came with lots of veggies, shrimp, and tender pork. I almost ordered the miso soup base, but I'm glad I stuck with the original soup base because it was amazing. I also had the Niku Udon which comes with thin beef slices and Wakame. I added corn to this bowl because it's a beautiful thing (a big lump with knobs). The udon noodles were cooked perfectly and the soup base was just as I would expect. I also added a small teriyaki chicken donburi to my order. It was tasty, but a little different than I expected. It tasted it bit more like orange chicken, which is not a bad thing at all. Menu was a little more complicated because many dishes had add on choices which tacked on a few extra dollars but was worth it. We ordered a miso ramen with deep fried gyoza as the add on. Needed some greens so opted for soy beans. Tempura Donburi looked good as well. Food came up very fast and hot. Portion size not the biggest but satisfactory. Miso broth was delicious and noodle's perfectly cooked. The pork pieces were marinated deliciously however noted the half egg is not marinated in soy and just your basic egg. The small nori and green..great compliments. Tempura was very crispy with veggies, squid and shrimp and included a sweeter thicker sauce. Yum! Gyoza was good and probably prefrozen but it was tasty. Nothing special about the soy beans except it's fun to munch on. Restaurant is bright and spacious. Nicely laid out. Service is okay but not great as we needed to ask for napkins and extra dishes. Second meal in Hawaii! From what I was told, ringer hut is traditionally a fast-food ish place in Japan and made its way over to Hawaii semi-recently. This ringer hut was located in the ala moana center on the first floor. We were greeted by a very nice server who sat us down. After only a couple minutes we placed our order. Our party of three had the curry rice, chicken katsu, crunchy noodles with pork and shrimp, and oyako donburi (chicken), and fried gyoza. The fried gyoza was solid. Nothing crazy memorable but a nice starter, my friend had the curry rice and the first time it came out sort of cold, so she asked for them to reheat it but they dont have any microwaves suprisingly, so instead they remade her dish. My other friend ordered the crunchy noodles with meat (can't remember name) and he said they were fantastic and hit the spot. He also had the katsu and said it was solid again but nothing crazy. This was my first time have oyako don.... It was fantastic. Eggy, with chunks of onion and chicken over rice. It was perfect. A very homey comforting meal for me that left me super satisfied. I came here on a whim when we passed it with the intention of going to Goma Tei, and it was a great alternative lunch. They have udon, ramen, and other sets, with an extensive menu of Japanese lunch dishes. Their ramen and udon were all decently priced at ~$15, and the portions were very large. I had the agemochi udon for $12.90. The noodles were chewy and the mochi was very good - I haven't found another restaurant with agemochi udon since Jimbos closed years ago! Nagasaki chain has arrived back on O'ahu! Located on the mauka (mountainside) of Ala Moana, nearby shops of Brug, Jeans Warehouse. The most popular item from Nagasaki is the Nagasaki Chanpon and Nagasaki Saraudon. Nagasaki Chanpon is a Tonkatsu based soup that has assorted meat, shrimp and vegetables and thicker noodles than ramen noodles. While the Nagasaki Saraudon has a crispy noodle texture with a signature based thick chicken gravy soup with meat and vegetables! I was welcomed by nice servers who greeted me to my table. The place overall was clean and modern. Menu is quite diverse and has different options, even for ramen, udon and side dishes (gyoza, chicken karaage). I opted to try the saruudon. I was debating if I should add a side order because of how hungry I was but I trusted that the portions will do justice. Presentation looks pleasing to the eye with the gravy sauce and the veggies. However the meat was lacking, and didn't even look like the picture on the menu (I found the meat hiding under the veggies!) However, I felt that the crispy noodles and the well seasoned gravy sauce was so good and I didn't get tired of it. Portion was good enough to get me full. We stumbled upon this place one day while walking the ground floor of Ala Moana. We were intrigued by the view of the interior through the window and drawn by the black curtain hanging over the entrance. Once we went in, we were seated fairly quickly since it was around 3:30pm when the lunch rush was perhaps over. Customer service was great! The woman who took our order was really friendly and helpful. My husband wanted to try a beer from the Japanese menu and she was so nice to get one from the back and serve it to him. I had the regular Nagasaki Champon and I must say it was so good! I loved the big helping of vegetables atop a mountain of thick noodles, shrimp and pork in a savory, creamy broth. It was a big bowl of comfort and for $17, it was worth it! I couldn't eat it all but my husband finished it even after having his tonkatsu meal. They even have a double Nagasaki Champon for $21.50 that could be shared. We both left happy, satisfied and will definitely be back to try more dishes on the menu! If you are looking to try something off the beaten path, Ringer Hut may just hit the spot! read more
