Rick's was a referral for me from a friend who has used Rick's for years. I had previously gone to the dealership to get a quote on some items. My friend said that Rick would not only beat their prices, but would be honest and tell me what I needed to do right away and what could wait for a few weeks or months. Mark was the one who helped me and he was really nice. My car was in his shop for 3 days and he called each day to tell me the status. It would have been there for only 2, but it was during the big storms last week and Rick's lost power for a few hours on the first day. Rick's did beat the dealership... by over 1000$! Needed to get my flat tire fixed and only had time during my hour lunch. Lucky it's also close to my home. They got me right in, fixed my tire, and I was on my way. ALSO, I asked him about getting an alignment on my Volvo. He told me that only Volvo and one other place in town do a good job on this brand. I appreciated the honesty! I took my 2016 Subaru Outback to Rick's tire shop and auto service in Seattle on September 20, 2023 to have it checked out for mechanical soundness at the request of a potential buyer. I had to travel an hour and 15 minutes to get there, but I understood how a buyer would want to make sure a car is mechanically sound prior to buying it. After waiting a while, I saw the mechanic and asked him if everything was OK and he said it was mechanically sound. I expected that would be the case as I am very careful about maintenance and correct anything that needs to be taken care of. I had given Mark, who was in the front of the office, previous maintenance records, as well as any previous repairs so he would have these as part of the inspection. When I told him I had just spoken with the mechanic that I had run into outside, Mark said he had no right to talk to me. I was obviously taken aback. Then Mark stated that he, Mark, was not supposed to be working that day, and he seemed irritated. He then told me the transmission fluid was dirty and needed to be changed and that would be $580. I told him I was only there for a mechanical inspection that was done and approved. Mark then went on to tell me that Subaru's transmissions were outsourced, and he was very critical. Then he held up a bottle of transmission fluid and stated the fluid needed to be changed immediately. The transmission fluid was actually due do to be routinely changed in another 3000 miles. He then stated again that he was not supposed to be working that day. My daughter was with me and witnessed this whole scenario. She was as appalled as I was at the proceedings. Obviously, I would not recommend this establishment to anyone and to top it off the waiting room was filthy. read more

This is the kind of place that can restore your faith in humanity. I'm pretty embarrassed about how my personal visit went, but you be the judge. I drive a hoopty. I'm not too worried about it-- I'm not facing a midlife crisis or trying to pick up chicks, so it works for me. I don't know much about cars besides checking oil, transmission fluid, wiper fluid, and changing a flat. When I failed emissions recently, I wanted to go to the closest place to get the darn thing figured out and be on my merry way. Unfortunately, as of 11-12 PM, Rick's was booked for they day. Courteous but blunt guy at the desk told me to come back early the next day. They open at 7-- plenty of time for 9-5s to drop off their cars and be into work on time. I didn't show up until 9 or 10, so I was a little nervous they would already be booked, but helpful mechanic told me they would be able to work me in before close, which is 7 PM. I was delighted. In this emissions/title transfer snafu, not much went my way so this small victory felt great. Managed to misplace my failed emissions test slip, so the guy told me to walk next door with my license plate # and they'd reprint for me. Done, did paperwork, dropped off the car. Guys tell me they'll call me when they get a chance to look at her. 90 bucks for the diagnostic, 60 bucks to fiddle with it till they get a pass OR you can opt to fix whatever it is failing you at XX??XX dollars. Obviously I was thinking this was going to cost me 150 bucks. The guys call to double check that they can do what needs to be done and quote me a price. I give the okay and they call me again around 6:30. The following was wrong with my poor little Saturn: -low rear tire -disgusting spark plugs -VERY low on oil -no coolant -oil really cruddy/needed changing Rick's clearly states that a standard oil change is 95. They ran my car back through emissions and got my pass slip for me, filled my tire, changed my oil and spark plugs, $200. I am really happy. Best of all, even with how stupid and annoying and simpering that guy at the desk must have thought I was, he didn't talk down to me or act condescending. Gave me a few tips to help clean out my system that I could grab at an auto parts store. I'm sure there were a lot of other scary things he could have mentioned to freak me out into spending more money there, but he kept on the problem at hand. I really respect that and will continue to bring my car here for regularly scheduled maintenance. See, I learn from my mistakes. :) read more

Having bad luck with nails in my tires and being new to the area I didnt know where to start I called Rick's first as they were close to me, let the person on the phone know I probably needed a patch he informed me of price and that they also have used tires incase they were unable to fix my tire, luckily they were able to fix it for about $30 , I was only there for about 20 minutes. Very fast and I honestly had no problems with anyone working there I even met the cutest little pup while waiting on my car. Very satisfied with my experience here. read more

I did't have any actual work here but they did quote me a price for my car that did not pass emissions. It seems they want to hold your care hostage if you do not upgrade to the more costly service. Eitherway I am getting the waiver because we are not replacing the catalytic converter, but the man says to me if I get the extra fuel injector cleaning he can have my car back to me in an hour or so, but if I go the waiver only route it will not be back to me until the end of the day, 5 hours later. I'm not a mechanic but I'm not an idiot and I know when I'm getting railroaded. Go elsewhere, these are not honest people. read more

I'd say it's a great place to drive by, toss a crap ton in money at, and then keep driving. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. These guys will go to great lengths to condescendingly explain to you how much they know and you don't. This should be a huge red flag. I don't need to spend that much $, get talked down to, and then, less than 24 hours later, discover that the work the claimed to have done was NOT done. Amateurs. The owner was shockingly aggressive and rude. I am not a customer and never have been, just a random passerby who made the mistake of walking by his shop. Within seconds he threw open the door and ran out at me yelling and falsely accusing me of trespassing, professing to constantly monitor all activity on the premises with cameras. The shop is right next to a COVID-19 mass testing site, so he probably has to deal with people parking on his lot all the time. There are often a lot of officers on hand at the testing site, and I worry about his safety and the safety of others. If he makes problems where there were none, how does he handle actual problems? I can say that he would probably notice if someone tried to steal your car. read more

I am a huge new fan of Rick's. I called them this morning about a flat tire on my Subaru - I had a puncture, and had driven on it for 1/4 mile... which probably meant the tire was shot and I'd need to 2 maybe 4 all new ones, because my car is AWD. So when I called up, I basically told Ricks' that I needed 4 new ones, and was just asking if they could get me in today. They had me come in, looked at the tire, and said they could FIX IT in 20 mins. So rather than doing what I asked and selling me new tires for hundreds of dollars (that I don't have), they did the RIGHT thing and got me back on the road in minutes for ~$30. The next time something goes wrong with my car, I'm calling Rick's because after this I trust them to to right by me. Thanks guys! read more

I wish I was able to upload audio files to this. My girlfriend called in to replace her catalytic converter and get a quote. She screens all of her calls. The entire interaction took a little over two minutes. She explained the problem and that it had been diagnosed at the Toyota dealership (she knew exactly what was wrong). Immediately the gentleman cut her off and said "I won't even waste my time if you don't have pictures". She had gotten several other quotes over the phone prior to this, all in the same general price range. She then said she didn't have pictures to which the man replied "I'm not interested" and hung up. She was never anything but civil and he turned down a $1500 repair in the middle of a global pandemic. I called back and was informed that this was likely the owner by another employee! Do not give this man money or even try to take your business here. His associate was actually very nice and even referred me to another business, but they are well aware of this problem and they don't deserve your time or consideration. I recently got back from Alaska and needed new tabs. My Truck has been running rich so naturally it didn't pass emissions. Figured I would have the shop next door run a diagnostic and pay them $50 extra bucks to get my voucher. Fast forward an hour and 30 minutes later the mechanic is telling me I'm running on 5 out of 6 cylinders. My initial thoughts are questioning but I listen. Maybe that's the reason for burning extra fuel. I'm quoted $1600 to address the issue. I pay my bill. Get in my truck go through emissions get my voucher and hop on the road. Now I soon start to notice that my idol has shifted from 1,000 rpm to 1,500 as soon as I stop at a light. That's not right?! I'm about half way home. Pull over check my fluids, vacuum lines, plugs, attempt to adjust my idol lower to no avail. Get on I 5 and my truck is running like complete crud. No power and puttering about. I make it home and call the shop. Explaining the problem to the mechanic who inspected my vehicle. This guy had the nerve to tell me it was probable one of my spark plug wires as the vehicle had 270,00 miles and the wiring rotted out... I'm a very handy guy and had replaced the previous engine with crate motor with under 50K. With this overhaul I replaced almost everything electrical. Including the spark plug wires... My brand new wires were most definitely not rotted out. Silence took over the conversation as the man I spoke with knew he had been caught in a lie. I hung up and through my hands in the air SOL. Since then I've had a large puddle of oil develop under my truck and it runs like a turd. It's a 91 trooper that I primarily use to romp around the woods and go snowboard in. Probably only worth 2 grand... Zilch now. I've read the other reviews and they seem positive but the vibe I'm getting is at least one mechanic has some issues with integrity and creating extra work for the shop. Rick's has fantastic Honda experts who are honest and their services are reasonably priced. I originally came to Rick's from a very high priced mechanic-not-to-be-named when they quoted me an outrageous estimate for a bunch of services that I had not brought my 1996 Honda Accord in for. It was due for the timing belt, but suddenly they wanted to put in a new distributor and told me there were a bunch of leaks. I had to get a second opinion. Several people directed me to Rick's. There, they did the timing belt, water pump, and radiator and told me that the distributor was fine and that they couldn't find any leaks. This saved me a ton of money, both in avoiding unnecessary service and on the services I did get. The car ran like a charm, and when I took it back two years later for an inspection before I sold it, they still couldn't find anything wrong. In fact, they said they'd get me even more money than what I was asking if my potential buyer flaked out. read more

Overpriced and I suspect they damaged my car on purpose to jack up the estimate. They said my transmission was leaking and someone had been topping it off. My tranny was not leaking before I took it in there, and I have extensive service records from the previous owner who also had no knowledge of a leak or anyone filling it. But after taking it home, it started leaking like a seive and the mechanic I hired 6 months later said it was nearly empty and he had to fill it. There was also a broken bushing that they claimed the previous mechanic must have just tightened up the adjustment nuts instead of replacing it, but my records say that bushing was replaced years earlier, and the bare spot they showed me where the nuts were previously looked clean, not at all like that had happened years earlier. They also quoted a ridiculously high price, and the mechanic who I actually got to do the work charged less than 1/3 what Rick's wanted to charge me. Their parts prices are far above fair market, I got them at Autozone instead for a fraction of what Rick's wanted to charge me. And the biggest insult to my intelligence was when he threw a set of tires on the estimate without even asking, saying "winter is coming and you're going to need good tires." My tires are not in need of replacement. They were just trying to upsell me something I didn't need. Worst of all, this was a mechanical inspection I paid for, and they turned it into a predatory, dishonest estimate. Rick's is an old school mechanic, the type that preys on the average person's ignorance about cars, and possibly even does intentional damage to get more of your money. I will not go back. read more

I will say that Troy was helpful over the phone, which had me hopeful that the experience would be a good one. But I was wrong. Today I went in and was "greeted" impersonally by Mark who clearly is lacking in social skills. The shop dogs were more friendly. He talked to me like I was an idiot who had never had a car worked on before... and doesn't like to smile apparently. They want to have your car overnight and all day - which isn't realistic during a work week, I'm sorry. Normally a shop can give you some type of estimate or at least help you figure out a plan of action. And, if you need help figuring out what you need done, they should at least pretend like they care. I won't be wasting my time here. Neither should you. read more

I asked these guys to swap my points for a pertronix ignition. I had an after-market coil, so the job required a resistor wire. Anyway, picked up my car, got about 2 miles down the road and my car died. I opened the hood and immediately noticed that they had put the resistor wire in parallel to the wire that needed resistance!! In other words, it wasn't doing any good. The pertronix was fried and I had to get it towed. The manager at Rick's said that he'd take another shot at it. I said I'd rather take it somewhere else. Asked for my money back and he refused, giving the age-old excuse that he had kids to feed. read more

I've been having Ricks tire and auto,repair all 3 of my fleet for years. I think about 10 years in fact,and there's been 5 or six vehicles. They have always been very professional and knowledgeable. They aren't just counter jockeys trying to make a sale,nor are they just trying to get ones car fixed enuf to get it out of there and down the road. They are maybe the most comprehensive mechanics I've ever used in my 40 years of driving. They call 'em like they see 'em and quite frankly I've never known them to be wrong. They keep good records as well. Once when I picked up my van,Mark asked me if I remember 4 years ago when they changed my oil cooler lines? I quite frankly didn't. They apparently found one of them to be leaking and changed them both on warranty. I wouldn't have know the difference. Over the years they have bent over backwards to keep my cars in good working order. They analyze on the fly and always have their eyes open for anything that might be a problem. The bottom line for me is,they fix it,it's fixed! Great guys,honest as they get and very talented mechanics. read more

Executive Summary: DISHONEST/AVOID! What happened: A few years back I took my 91' Jetta GLI to Rick's. I had failed emissions, and stopped at the closest place to see about addressing the issue, or at least spending $175 on it to get a waiver. ( I had an aftermarket cam shaft that made the idle lopey and resulted in a misfire on cylinder 1 as I found out later) Anyhow, they wouldn't service my car at this location, but at their other shop which they encouraged me to stop by. Since they were referring me, they said I could get a discount for my effort and being a loyal customer. Well, the other shop is attached to a Chevron gas station as it turns out... I probably should have stopped right there... yeah well I was already there. So I dropped the car off with the failed emissions report. They said they would look at it and get back to me the following day and that they wouldn't exceed a bill of $175. I got a call the next day and they told me I could come get the car. When I showed up the car was still in the shop and the "mechanic" said the car wouldn't run... because all of a sudden the fuel pump went out. Mr. Mechanic was spraying carburetor cleaner into the intake and trying to start it... Note that carburetor cleaner does not work the same as starting fluid... He then told me that my fuel pump needed to be replaced... Turns out that car has an external fuel pump and you can easily hear it working when you turn the key on. Since I wasn't convinced they knew what was going on I asked them to stop working on the car and put it outside. I called the owner, Rick, and we discussed what happened. He said that I should let them replace the fuel pump and everything would be fine... I said that I would take the car to a VW dealer and have them confirm the diagnosis. He said that if the VW dealer confirmed that the issue wasn't a fuel pump, then he would refund my money, but in the mean time to get my car back, I would pay the now $220 bill... reluctantly, I payed to get the keys back so I could tow the car up to the VW dealer. $330 later the VW dealer found a broken wire to the throttle position sensor. So Rick's mechanic was fumbling around, whether on purpose or not, and broke the wire and blamed it on the fuel pump. Happy to have proven that the fuel pump was fine I called Rick back... he chose not to believe my update on the situation despite my offer to show him the car, the fix, and the receipts from the dealer. Rick was no longer interested in discussing anything with me in fact. I considered taking Rick to small claims court, basically on the principal of the matter, but with school and work I couldn't see myself having much time to devote to that. I found that Rick's is living up to the bad stereotypes of a shady mechanic/shop. The lamest part of this... I used to work as a mechanic and I still got trapped in their game. :( read more

My husband and I have been bringing our vehicles here for years. It started with a bad emissions test over a decade ago, and being right beside the testing station, it was simply a matter of convenience, but over the years, Mark, Troy and the rest of the staff have earned our trust. Yesterday, I needed a new headlight and got instant service. Mark went out of his way as it was not an easy install on my VW bug, parts had to be dismantled and removed to access the light casing. I highly recommend this repair shop. They always explain the problem without being condescending to me as a female who knows little about vehicle mechanics. read more

I really want to like these guys... I starting coming here because they seem to be one of the only places in Seattle that carries Amsoil. I brought a car in for suspension work and they couldn't figure out how it worked and recomended I go back to stock. I ended up fixing the problem in my driveway with some help from the net. The final straw was a botched oil change. After a change my car was leaking oil so I had a different shop put the car on a lift. The drain plug practically fell out. If it had have come out while driving he motor would have been toast... Other experiances have been great and the people are nice. Sadly I don't think I can trust the work. read more

I went to Rick's due to failing emissions next door and my mechanic sent me there. Mark and spent quite a bit of time researching online for technical bulletins about the issues my car was having. He gave me an estimate for two different senarios one for almost $1000 and another for $500 it could be one or both. Turned off lights and told me to come back if the lights came back on. one day later lights are on and went back. He could very easily have told me it was both and it was only the $500 fix.Car was fixed next day. While I was waiting for my car 3 people walked in asking to get an emissions test and he calmly explained it was the building next door. I wouldn't have been that patient. I also appreciated that Mark explained what was going on in my car and didnt' talk down to me. read more

They told me to call Rick's and ask for Troy because he is the best in town at diagnosising problems. Just a shorty - had to call them up because the awesome guys at D&D Brakes weren't familiar with my van's belts and such...which isn't a surprise, they do brakes, not serpentine belts! So we called up Troy, and he was amazing and helped us over the phone with some really pointed questions and candor and dropped some knowledge allowing us to tension my belt correctly without us ever coming in or even paying a cent.
