This review is based on my direct experience as a paying customer with Performance Motors, located at 21116 67th Avenue West, Lynnwood, Washington. I brought my BMW X5 to this shop for diagnostics. After partially disassembling the vehicle, I was given repair estimates ranging from several thousand dollars up to about $16,000, while being told there was no guarantee the car would actually become reliable. I was even advised it might be better to sell the car to a mechanic rather than repair it. The diagnostic charge alone was about $1,000, processed through a payment link that included an additional surcharge that was not clearly disclosed beforehand. During the process, the engine cover was reportedly misplaced and multiple parts, screws, and disconnected components were returned loose in a box. When I arranged AAA towing to move the vehicle to a private garage for a second opinion, the tow was canceled after information was given to the driver indicating the car was being transferred between repair shops. Because of this experience, I have lost confidence in this business and will not be returning. I strongly recommend that other customers seek a second opinion and consider alternative repair shops before committing to any work here. I wanted to take my car to an independent shop after having the dealer service it with pre-paid packages. I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with the dealer's outrageous pricing and difficulty scheduling. The straw that broke this camel's back was brakes. Dealer wanted $1550 for front brakes. Performance's cost was $755. I put them off for a bit that I needed to get the scheduled maintenance done as well. That was 1/3 the cost (dealer estimate was $950, Performance total was $330). Mike suggested I should replace rear brakes, those were $665. So really, I got a significant value for the money spent and I supported an independent shop. The initial call with Mike (owner) turned out to be quite pleasant and he put up with some questions about cost and scheduling. He worked with me for an ideal day to drop it off and pick up within just a few days from swinging by to get an official estimate. There was only one hiccup that caused a delay due to an unforeseen part that was needed -- he was direct about the mishap with the broken part and the shop took care of it. Since that threw off timing to pick up the car with a trip, he was super amicable about letting me keep the car there until I was back in town. I brought my Audi here when it was having some issues. They were honest in the summary of the cause and provided me a full write up (I was surprised of the detail since I never received that level even at a dealership). They explained the problem, what it would cost to fix it and also explained scenarios/options if I didn't fix it. For those wondering, it was the Timing Chain Tensioner. I gave it 4 stars because I think the price they quoted me was slightly on the high side, but I bet the service and quality you would get is top notch. I ended up trading it in when used car rates where really high. They were very nice there and seemed trustworthy. If I have issues again, I'll go here for service. read more

Bad communication Put our car in 10/09/18 for an oil light that wouldn't go off. Was fixed by 10/12 but had a little fender bender in their extremely small parking lot so we left it so they could get it repaired. Today 10/23 my husband was told very rudely that they would call the repair shop when they had time and get back to him. Really??!! read more

I brought my cars here several times, but the last time my sunroof was left open by a tech. They kept the car a few days extra after doing the original work to dry it out. I now have a mold issue and can't leave the car sitting as it's my second car for any length of time because of this. They also took parts out around the seat belts (plastic covers) and say they didn't but they parts were never put back on after the clean up. I had called them and they wouldn't take responsibility. Won't be back for none of my cars, I'm really disappointed given the amount of work I've had them do in the past. read more

Called to get a quote on installation for lowering springs on my 2010 C63, Mike is the guy who answered the phone I believe. Conversation was fine until he asked me "do you have struts to go with it?" I told him I'm using the OEM struts for the springs and he told me it'll ride terribly. I told him I understand but with my research and years of modding cars I know it won't be that far off from OEM quality. (Of course anytime you mod a car it won't feel OEM anymore) He proceeds to tell me "oh that's cool, I've been doing this for years and I'm telling you it'll ride terribly" (in a very sarcastic and rude tone) Was kinda speechless that this shop has this kind of customer service. I asked for a quote still and he tells me $705 plus taxes just to install springs! (They're hourly labor is $105) So this guy is telling me it'll take roughly 7 hours to install springs! Lmao, also says "I can't warranty any of the work." Mike sure knows how to push customers away with his attitude and ridiculous pricing. Highly suggest no one go to this shop or even call this shop for anything! Guaranteed you'll get ripped off. read more

Initial impression was good. Seemed knowledgeable and helpful. Take my car in for what turned out to be a boost valve that blew. They were quick to diagnose and I opted to get a new battery and oil change along with the new valve because I like supporting small businesses when they do things well. When I get my car back, the iDrive controller/scroll wheel is no longer working. I used the wheel to navigate to the shop when I first took it in, so I'm 100% certain it was functioning. I call them and I'm told to come down right away and they would take a look. Perfect, they'll correct whatever error was made and I can get back to enjoying my car. When I arrive they take a brief look, then tell me the controller is bad, and to diagnose if I need another one I can pay for a diagnoses and if it confirms that the controller is bad, I'd have to pay over 600$ more, despite just paying them 1000$ for my repairs. They say that because they weren't working on that part of the car, it's not their fault. I get that mistakes happen and they offered to only charge me 50$ for the diagnoses but I'm livid that they can't just own up to something they've caused (intentional or not) and work toward a resolution. Going to take this to a dealership from here on out. I'd rather pay for service that will be guaranteed by a company then attempt to be nickel and dimed to the tune of hundreds of dollars. I thought I had found a place to call my regular mechanic for my first luxury car, I'm sad to say I haven't and have come away from the experience quite angry. read more

Brought my W211 E63 here for a valve cover gasket job. The guys here found another leak from the VVT solenoids and replaced the gasket there as well. So far the leaking has come to a stop. Great guys, consistent with their estimates, and won't ding you when they get the job done faster than expected. Shoutout to Pete for coordinating everything with me promptly. read more

These guys are honest, and I trust them. I made an uninformed purchase and brought my problems to Performance Motors, they looked at it and didn't sugarcoat what I could and couldn't expect. I wanted to save the car and find some success, so I saved my pennies and babied the car along for a year, and when I was ready I returned. They started the work I asked for and then called me - it was worse than imagined and the cost of repairs would be at least double what we expected. I asked hard questions, they answered honestly. They could have taken my money and made the agreed upon repairs before telling me what else needed to be done, but they didn't. They called me and explained what was wrong, why it was expensive, what I could reasonably expect for my money, and then let me have some time to make decisions. I took the car back and traded it in for something much more sensible and more my speed. Performance Motors could have had thousands of my dollars, but instead they have my respect. Crooks! Took my car in to get my NAV system fixed. It was covered under the warranty. Warranty already APPROVED the repair but because the warranty company was not familiar to them they decided to say they wouldn't work on the car, but ofcourse I'm still on the hook for the diagnostic! Total BS I took there car to another shop. The whole thing was done in 4 days no problem. Warranty covered the repair, labor and diagnostic. Would not recommend this place to anyone and urge anyone reading this rant do steer clear. read more

I was in the market for a BMW 325i for my girlfriend. When we found a good deal on one from a private seller, I needed a knowledgeable mechanic to perform the buyer's inspection on short notice. A car forum I frequent referred me to this place and I have been going back for all my BMW maintenance needs ever since. Pete Sowl is the owner of the shop and he's always honest and straight to the point. Their buyer's inspection found some issues that the seller didn't disclose/know about and helped me avoid $1500 in repairs. They can usually fit you in for an appointment with 2 days notice, sometimes sooner if it's just an oil change. His labor rates are inline with the average hourly rate in Washington State and he doesn't overcharge on parts. I've called around to some other reputable indie BMW shops in Western Washington and his quotes are always the most reasonable one. In fact, if you'd prefer to save some money and purchase your own parts online and bring them to his shop he'll just charge the labor portion and happily install them for you. Overall, I highly recommend these guys for your car needs. At the very least, give them a call for a quote when you need some car work done. read more

Take your car to this place and ditch your dealership!! They are always honest, fast, and most importantly demonstrates a genuine desire to take care of you and your car. This past visit required my car to be towed to their shop. My car had completely died and a jump start didn't do the trick. I was prepared for the worst. Was it the starter? Was it the alternator? Was it an electrical problem that was going to cost me a mortgage payment? Nope. Mike called me up and told me that they ran my car through a number of tests and test drove it several times and that there was nothing wrong that they could find. I didn't believe it but more importantly I wasn't "sold" to do anything else on my car. These guys are top notch. I called two shops in the Lynnwood area for a starter replacement after having a bad experience with the BMW dealership in Bellevue on my recent water pump replacement. I'm generally an impatient person so I don't like to wait around for things. I called Northwest German Car Repair first up on 99 and waited about an hour, then called Performance. Performance got back to me in about an hour with a quote - whereas NWGCR took about 6 hours to get me a quote, so Performance had my business. Communication was excellent, prices were awesome and their work was superb. After being robbed by the dealership I will be going back here for all of my repair needs as finding an honest, no bullshit shop isn't an easy task these days. Thanks Performance Motors! read more

This will be a work in progress. March 2017 I've been highly impressed with my mechanic; Nick and Mike, my Service Manager. We have been slowly working on getting the car to perform without alarms going off. Their knowledge and ability are top notch. After a over the phone consultation I brought my Audi in for some serious attention. My needs required the patience and knowledge that Mike has to offer. Without hesitation Mike is crawling under my car and noting various modifications that have been impacting my experience with the car. Mixed: Ive had good service BELOW $1,000.00 and have had marginal service -very recently, above $1,000.00 My biggest complaint is the marginal customer service. Its spotty, and inconsistent. words of advice: 1.) Dont frighten your clients into expensive repairs if you dont HAVE to. 2.) Always handle your customers with the utmost care and concern. 3.) Never assume that your clients arent always shopping for bargains. If you slap them with a huge profit margin on parts, they will go elsewhere. For the record: owning a higher-end luxury vehicle comes at a cost, intrinsic to the purchase itself. I am learning this the Hard way. Once the warranty is gone, it all goes to crap on greased rails. PM covered me when my Idler Cam follower failed. Great work! to show my appreciation: I didnt practice good vehicle husbandry, as a result caused some engine damage which was a stressful situation. I do a LOT of research in my line of work, including construction budgets / estimating. I know the process and I know who to call when i need stuff. The service pricing is on-par with similar shops. Very professional, knowledgeable, and fast. Dropped off our VW Golf that was overheating. They replaced the timing belt, water pump, and a few other things and it was a bit on the pricey side but the car is now fixed and drives with ZERO problems. This takes a huge burden off our shoulders because of we didn't know for sure if our car problems were ever going to end and ever since we took a chance and took our car to Performance Motors, it's been a dream to have the freedom and ability to drive our car problem free....once again. I recommend anyone with an European car to check this place out. It's not a bargain mechanic kind of a place and this is apparent when you first pull up to the place...there were a ton of really nice cars including a really nice older vehicle that looked like a classic parked out in the front. Mike helped us out, I believe he is the manager of this location. Oh and Another tip for those of you who are considering dropping off your car here...they only take payments over the phone if the bill is less than $400. It's for security purposes and it's a part of their policy. I understand that and find that reasonable. Our bill was well over $400 and so we could not pay over the phone and had to come in and pay in person. Paying in person was a breeze, it took less than 5 minutes to pay for the repairs and be on my way. After I paid for the repairs (right at closing time) Mike, the manager was kind enough to drive the car out to the street for me so that it wouldn't get locked in behind the gate that they use at closing to secure their perimeters. My husband was still at work and he picked up his car afterwards but that was nice because I don't know how to drive a manual and Mike didn't really have to do that for me but he did. I've recently moved from Edmonds to Auburn and have yet to find competent independent BMW service anywhere near here. I used to live a mere six blocks from PERFORMANCE MOTORS, servicing my legacy 1993 525i with 240k miles. PM is my shop of record, as both Mike and Pete have always treated me right in terms of service and repair. No, not cheap but eminently fair. As such, I became unwittingly spoiled to the value I've been receiving all along. I should have known when I asked Pete if he knew of any Auburn/ Federal Way shops and all he could do was shake his head no. Recent poor experience here in the Auburn Valley confirms same. Bottom line? What used to be 'a mere six blocks' is now my 100+ mile roundtrip. Yet, PM remains my shop of record, despite the hike. And I remain both lucky and grateful it's not farther than that. PM is my vote as the best independent BMW shop in the entirety of the Puget Sound, hands down. read more
