Portion was big, food was mediocre, and service was BAD (No, it wasn't that busy the day we went there for breakfast) They have enough server/food runner, but our server only came to our table ONCE to make sure everything was ok. The server also walked by our table few times but didn't remove dirty/empty dishes for at least 20 minutes after we ate. Service was bad yet they were so quick to bring our bill and left it on the table while we were eating. Felt we were rushed although our server said, "Take your time whenever your ready." Personally, I don't appreciate any establishment that brings bill immediately after food being served. This was my 3rd of 4th time here, but probably would look for a new place to go from now on. read more

We had a beautiful Mother's Day brunch planned for 11 guests, most visiting from out of town. We made the reservation in person six days early and were assured that the restaurant could accommodate our group with outside seating. We arrived ten minutes early and were told that they were in the process of setting aside our tables. FORTY minutes later, we were told that our table was almost ready. The restaurant was crowded and many patrons were complaining that they were waiting longer than 45 minutes for their food. When I checked with the hostess 15 minutes later (fifty minutes after our reserved time), we were told that the party at our table had just received their food. We left without being seated, spoiling the brunch for the family, and leaving us to scramble to prepare something at home. The restaurant was totally unprepared and ill-equipped to handle their customers. They were either too greedy to limit their patrons or too poorly staffed to handle the crowd. Better to have fewer patrons who have a good dining experience than to have many more who are unsatisfied and unlikely to return in the future. Rick's can count us among the latter group. read more

First of all, we waited for our food for an extremely long time, even though the restaurant wasn't busy yet. The couple seated next to us came in 10 minutes after us and were served 15 minutes before us. Our server was rude and gave me attitude when I asked if she could bring out what was made already, letting her know that I didn't mind if it was not brought out together. After 40 minutes of waiting, she brought out our food and didn't even bother to tell us what was what and just laid it on the table. Food was pretty good. Generous portions. What really stood out and what I liked was the fact that each table had a pitcher of coffee and water. This is a great idea since a good percentage of waiter/waitress table visits are for refills. I like it for the efficiency factor and some private time. The server did spot check the table and if we needed anything in a timely fashion, but didn't over do it. When the food was presented the ketcup, mustard and other condiments were presented as well. I thought it ho-hum the first time as I thought the price for what you got was too much, but the vegetarian crepe has been consistently light and healthy as well as tasty. It comes with a bagel although not the tastiest, it will fill your carb craving; the hash browns are a little to dry and again, the redemption is that it appears healthy, but if you're ordering hashbrowns, you probably don't mind a little grease! The lupine crepe - a little too much meat for me but consistently edible. Boy, my standards are high... The portabello mushroom panini really hit the spot. Great proportion of bread to cheese to schrooms/veggies. Salad looked a little sad - wilted and just a pile of greens; nothing interesting. My gf and I were in the area shopping and asked a local where to go for lunch. She recommended this place, so we went for it. The place was buzzing. We had to wait about 10-15 minutes for our table. Not bad considering. They have their big coffee roaster in the front. It appears to be non-operational, so it just seems to take up space. Their office is next to it. Seems pretty weird to me. But the folks eating just ignore it and eat away. Looking at the menu, there are choices galore. It was lunchtime, but man, those breakfast items looked sooo good. We were seated near the counter where we see the cooks...cooking. Noisy from all the plate clanging like a cafe. I chose the Philly Cheesesteak, my gf chose the chicken salad. The salad was great. The cheesesteak could have had more flavor. (-1 star for that) I did like the hash browns though. We have to knock down another star because of the manager. She was "whipping" all the servers and cooks to get a move-on. And not very pleasant demeanor either. At one point, she started to clap her hands over her head in the "hurry up/chop-chop" kinda way. My gf was annoyed by that and it ruined her meal. It does add stress to the whole atmosphere. We both ordered: Hawaiian pancake ($3.40) - it was huge for one pancake, and the flavors blended well. The coconut gave it a subtle crunch which worked really well. Cheese and mushroom omelette ($10) - one of the best omelette I can remember ordering. It wasn't dry, super moist, and the ratio of veggies to egg was perfect. I don't like it when there are more fillings than egg. The melted cheese on top was really good! Chicken Gouda omelette ($13) also made very well. The chicken apple sausage inside was moist and soft and cut to the perfect size. On top was shredded Gouda cheese and spring onions. Gouda wasn't melted - not sure if it was supposed to be but was still really good regardless. The omelets came with a side of hashbrowns and a bagel. I put my omelette on my bagel - it was delicious! I've been bringing my family to Rick's Cafe for years now. Aside from the friendly crew, there's a palpably "good vibes" ambience which brings us back. Obviously, others feel the same way. It is a popular eatery. I appreciate the hot coffee served outside on the patio when there's a wait for a table. My brother is a vegan, and sometimes it can be difficult to find a restaurant with an accomodating menu. The emphasis on healthy food (eg., organic) is, in my opinion, what puts Rick's Cafe on the map. I'm very grateful for the presence of Rick's Cafe in my community. read more

I like ricks..the breakfasts are so good. I haven't been there for lunch yet but I imagine it being alright! The potatoes they serve with most of their breakfast dishes are really good! I just wish they had whole grain bagels instead of plain..eh. It is my favorite breakfast place though! We have only been here for breakfast but have gone here for the past several years - it is terrific. The portions are large the quality is high and consistently good. They have the BEST "diner" coffee in the area. I have settled on the Mountaineer Skillet. The corned beef mix they serve is homemade and excellent with large pieces of corned beef. My wife usually gets the Florentine Omelet. Everything is fresh and good. I would recommend Rick's Cafe to anyone looking for a place for breakfast. read more

This is hands down the best American-style breakfast spot in the Bay Area. My husband and I have tried 'em all. We've been coming here every weekend for 5 years. Rick's is diner food without the grease. It's restaurant food without the Silicon Valley pretension. Fresh, hot and delicious applies to everything on the menu (aside from the bowl of fresh fruit; the fruit is fresh, cool and delicious and always tastes as if it's in season). Since everything on the breakfast menu is perfectly prepared in every way, I feel the need to order it all pretty much every time: one pancake (fluffy and huge), bacon (thick and delicious), hash browns (thin-sliced potatoes perfectly and delicately seasoned), egg whites (all fluff, no grease), bagel with cream cheese (perfect consistency and freshly toasted), bowl of fruit (as if I picked and sliced it all up myself). Occasionally I will opt for the waffle topped with strawberries and the freshest tasting whipped cream. Mmmm. My husband always gets the veggie melange (with a side of corn tortillas to make it gluten free and Mexican style). I am tapping this review out on my phone while hungrily awaiting my food -- wait! I had an eggs Benedict that tasted fine, but was pretty bland. Others in my party good the French toast, which is supposedly seasoned with cinnamon and vanilla and all types of delicious sounding ingredients. It tasted just like bread dipped in egg. No sweetness, no vanilla, and certainly no cinnamon. Husband got French toast with cooked apples. He said the apples tasted like had come straight from a can and just heated. Bleh. We went to Rick's for breakfast this morning based on the Yelp reviews. I wanted a place in Los Altos which was infant friendly and which would satisfy my craving for Eggs Benedict and this place seemed to fit the bill with plenty of positive reviews. Unfortunately my idea of a good brunch spot is more along the lines of Rex on Polk than Denny's. My first shock and disappointment was to find that Ricks served no alcohol! What's Eggs Benedict without a Bloody Mary? Still I blame myself for not checking and do not count that against them. However our meal was disappointing. In my Eggs Benedict the ham and hollandaise was quite good, however the muffins were barely warmed up, much less toasted and soon became a lukewarm unappetizing mush. Worse the eggs were overdone with yolks that were too firm and refused to run (which was just as well since I lacked the muffins to mop them up with). My wife's Heuvos Rancheros were marginally better, albeit drowned in sour cream. Both dishes came with a side of shredded potatoes, in both cases they avoided being dried out, but had practically no crisp or crunchiness to them. I had little to complain about my side dish of fruit (3 grapes, two pineapple wedges and four melon cubes), save that perhaps the grapes were a bit sour. The service was fast and helpful, but the ambiance was raucous and the flow of the floor plan was very fragmented and bizarre. In a nutshell we won't be going back. read more

Was visiting the area and tried this place based on other Yelp reviews. The Mr. and I had crepes. I had the crabmeat crepes and he had the sweet crepes with strawberries & whip cream. Very yummy! They have a back patio which is enclosed & has heaters, so if you go there an that is all that is available, don't worry about sitting there. Good service with a good crowd of fellow diners. Would eat there again next time I'm in the area. One suggestion for the owners that would make it so much better -- do something about the wobbly tables on the patio. We spilled coffee twice because the table was so wobbly (if the feet are not adjustable, Home Depot sells a cheap box of shims that would work fine). read more

On average, I thought the place was pretty good. The place was busy, but there's a lot of seating (there were counter seats, high chair seats, booths, outdoor seating) and all the employees were very nice. The water came in stainless steel cups. At first, I thought they were cute -- especially with the little "Rick's Cafe" written on them, but then I realized that because the cups were stainless steel, it was really hard for the servers to know when you need a refill. I ordered the Eggs Louis Cayenne (it has crab) and it was very good! (~$15)There was a good amount of crab and the poached eggs were runny and perfect. It comes with potatoes and fruit, but you don't get too much potatoes and there probably 5 pieces of fruit (3 melon, 1 pineapple, and 1 grape). The potatoes and fruit were acceptable, but luckily the eggs were the main attraction. My boyfriend ordered the Greek omelette (~$12). He said a well-made omelette, but he would have put the feta cheese inside the omelette instead of on top. His also came with a (toasted) bagel and potatoes. I noticed that the bagel came pre-buttered, so if you don't eat butter, make sure you say something beforehand! He was also a little disappointed there were no jams or cream cheese to go with the bagel. What's a bagel without cream cheese? At the end of the meal, they handed us the check. Just the check. Usually, when you're handed just the check, they tell you to pay up front; and usually, when they come take the check, the check comes in that black folder. But here, neither situation occurred. We debated awhile what we should do, while the check sat on the table with the credit card. Once we started to get up to take the check to the front, someone came by and took the check and credit card. After all this, it was still unclear what you're supposed to do with the check. read more

I love eating out for breakfast, and am happy with diners. But when I need to go a little further up market, I go to Rick's. The traditional dishes are great, and there are light choices, such as fruit and yogurt parfaits, that are lovely. This review is actually for the unacceptable service we got from the host/manager. We are the "coffee ladies". We are former coworkers. We met regularly with a dear friend who had cancer at coffeehouses until she passed away. So now, there are four of us and we've been coming to Rick's Cafe for breakfast for years. We loved the lumberjack pancake, the salmon benedict, the salads, and essentially really liked the food and the service. Rick's was our meeting spot every few months since we come from different part of the Bay Area to catch up. We always had a good time eating there and chatting for a couple of hours. However, after recenlty being treated so disdainfully for the second time by the hostess/manager - the four of us have decided and quite regrettably to not return to Rick's Cafe any longer. When someone is telling a server to clean up our table before we are completely done eating - we found that quite rude. Then when it wasn't done quickly enough, she literally stood at the table and looked at us - didn't say anything - but kept looking. We got the nonverbal message - "You need to hurry it up and get out" . OK. Our server actually apologized for her. She said, "I'm sorry ladies. She gets really stressed out when it gets busy. It's fine when she does it with us. We're used to it, but it's not good when she does it with customers." We actually felt bad that she felt compelled to apologize on behalf of her manager. So to you, the host/manager of Rick's Cafe - You have lost four loyal customers. We were so hurt and offended by your behavior towards us - that we can no longer enjoy Rick's Cafe like we used to. Your attitude towards us was completely unprofessional and unacceptable. We certainly hope you will not treat others in such a manner. And most certainly not us! read more
