Let me start by saying that this review has less to do with the bar itself, and almost everything to do with the staff.
Rick's is part of a monstrous bar complex that has a $5 cover. My friends and I were in Key West for a bachelor party and the "bro-ey" members of our party insisted on finding the biggest party possible. I, being a bit more subdued than my friends, snuck out of the main area as soon as I saw two dudes in shiny shirts get in a fight over accidentally bumping into one another.
I popped in next door to the smaller bar with a service window on the street. I was only going to stay for one drink and move on.
When I arrived, some blacked out spring breaker types were covering songs I didn't like the first time around on the karaoke stage. Let me be very clear: I. Can. Not. Stand. Karaoke. I've never wanted to spend any time in a Karaoke bar in my life...until now.
I sat down at the end of the bar and immediately received prompt and friendly service. My servers, Deana and Holly Anne, were friendly and prompt. They made good conversation and answered all my questions about Key West with great patience, all while keeping ahead of their other orders and side work. They have both been working at the karaoke bar for years and yet still remained friendly and professional; no small feat. I couldn't believe that this place hadn't beaten them down into the jaded, cynical bartenders we all dread as friendly, polite out-of-towners. Despite dealing with the lowest-common-denomenator types every third customer, they smiled and poured, without a hint of the bad attitude they were certainly entitled to after enduring belligerence and harassment. I had to go back.
The next night, I met another server, Samantha, who dealt with the bar's lull between live music and karaoke by making small talk with me while hammering out her side work. Again, I had an awesome time while surrounded by awful karaoke and belligerent customers. Samantha was constantly being harassed by two frat boy customers, but just did her job and waited them out. A true professional behind the bar.
The staff here keeps the bar clean. It was the first bar I'd been to on Duval St. that my arms didn't stick to...no small feat considering the high-traffic nature of the strip.
The drinks are as cheap as any I found on Key West and the bartenders pour fairly. I know my Jameson, and these bottles weren't filled with rail "whiskey". Everything seems to be above board here.
If you like karaoke, you'll love this place. If you don't, chat up your bartender. They have the nicest bar staff I have ever met.
A huge thanks to Samantha, Holly Anne, and Deana. You guys made my trip to the rowdy part of Duval street go from bearable to awesome in the blink of an eye.
If you do make it to Rick's, tip well, they deserve it. read more
