It's a dive bar through and through but I happen to be a big fan of dive bars! However, this one fell flat on it's face with the service. I wouldn't say the place was packed but there were not any open seats at the bar. I posted up the best I could but for the better part of 15 minutes both bartenders didn't even come to my side of the bar. I then moved to the other side and waited another 10 minutes to be served (at which point the bartender said "Didn't I just serve you?" Um, no, you most definitely did not. This place has two saving graces: 1) A water jug full of cold water for the taking, off in the corner. Love that. 2) A popcorn machine that had DELICIOUS popcorn! YES. If you can manage to get a beverage then I think you won't mind Green Parrot's (very) relaxed atmosphere and delightful little perks. My takeaway is for the staff to mix in some work to go along with their chatting with the regulars...

There was live music playing, pool tables, and even some video games, so there's plenty to keep you and the family entertained while you hang out. Kids are allowed in, but they aren't allowed to sit at the bar. It definitely feels like one of those places where you can lose track of time in the best way. They also have a merch area with hoodies, stickers, and other souvenirs if you want to take a little piece of the experience home. And knowing it's one of the oldest bars in the Keys just adds to the charm and history of the place. The service was quick, you walk up to the bar and order then find a place to sit. Super chill and laid back. One fun thing you have to try is tossing a quarter into the fish's mouth outside... test your luck and see if you can land it! Can't forget the drinks! Of course it is an attraction because it is supposedly the original Sloppy Joes where Ernest Hemingway hung out. It is dark inside with low ceilings. People have hung paper currency all over and you will also see lots of bras hanging from the ceiling. There is live music and lots of people watching. We enjoyed our drinks and the fun atmosphere.

Throughout the night, I kept asking everyone where Rick was. Each time, someone told me to quiet down. Naturally, I responded by yelling, "RICK! RICK! RICK!" in rapid succession. Rick then appeared from a puff of green smoke, looking like a combination of Macho Man Randy Savage and Grandpa from The Munsters. He asked why I had summoned him by saying his name three times. I apologized and explained that I had merely been trying to locate the owner. Rick handed me three Bacardi Lemon shots and ordered me to drink them back-to-back-to-back to cleanse the air. I obeyed, and we soon found ourselves laughing over a terrible "bad blood" joke. He then gave me a tour of his many bars, introduced me to a suspiciously pale bartender named Vlad, and led the crowd in a spirited rendition of "The Monster Mash." Rick even shared his favorite vampire joke: "Why did the vampire open a bar?" "To raise the spirits, but business was slow because everyone kept asking for a Bloody Mary." It was a fantastic night, although I did wake up the next morning with two strange dots on my neck and an intense craving for tomato juice. A carpenters dream bar, everything made from repurposed wood, sealed and had a nice glossy lacquer, not what you would expect in a dive bar like this. The bar is quite spacious and they have a second bar in the back to accommodate larger crowds. All-in-all, great spot to get a drink on the cheap and see some live music. The Kaya collection was recommended to us by some people we met, and it turned out to be a great suggestion. Our group agreed that the Backyard Bar was one of our favorites. Food: We didn't have reservations and were told there would be a wait for a table, so we settled into the Backyard Bar area and ordered a round of drinks. They have a creative and delicious selection of specialty cocktails. I had the Key West Colada, and it was excellent. It leaned toward the sweeter side, almost like a dessert, but I had no complaints. The food menu offered many tempting choices. Our group ordered the Poke Nachos, Boom Boom Shrimp, Korean Tacos, BBQ Pork Sandwich, Pork Sliders, Fish Sandwich, and Burger Sliders. The food arrived fairly quickly and was hot, flavorful, and generously portioned. The standout items for me were the pork dishes, especially the sandwich and sliders. The pork was incredibly tender and well seasoned, some of the best I've had. The Poke Nachos were also excellent, with a great balance of crunch, fresh fish, and flavorful sauces. Service: Even without a reservation, the hostess was welcoming and estimated about a 30-minute wait. It ended up being closer to 45 minutes, but since we were able to enjoy drinks at the bar, the time passed quickly. It was a busy evening, and there were moments when service could have been more attentive. We had to ask for additional utensils and water, and I needed to track down our server when it was time to pay. These weren't major issues, but they're areas that could be improved. Fixing this would have made it a 5-star experience. There was live entertainment that evening, including a steel drum performer who provided great background music while we waited at the bar. Once seated, we were treated to a personal performance by Nicholas Tweedy, a magician and mentalist. His act was incredible, including some impressive mind-reading tricks. He was friendly and engaging, and his performance added a memorable touch to the evening. Atmosphere: The Kaya complex includes several different venues, each with its own unique feel. My impression is that they share a common kitchen, although each space has its own personality. The Backyard Bar is likely the most casual of the group. There's also a central area with a pool table and arcade games, adding to the relaxed, social atmosphere. It was a beautiful evening, and the outdoor seating was perfect. There were plenty of spots near the bar with a clear view of the stage, and the picnic tables comfortably accommodated our group of six. Glad we found this place. With the exception of some service issues, it was a wonderful experience. Definitely a spot we would return to.

The bar is small but with only 4 people it felt huge. Also all the other bars we were at were full. The bathroom door is difficult. I almost called for help to get out. Overall it's divey with an abundance of niknaks and stuffed monkeys. They started karaoke at 9:30. It seems the songs are older. There is a couple that comes every night. It felt extremely awkward being one of the few being sung to. If you want to practice singing without judgement this may be the place for you.
