I found this to be a great classic place to hang out. Good live music, a lively crowd with a mix of locals and tourists. They have a great beer selection (including Lagunitas IPA from California, WTF?), good service...what's not to like? The location is a reasonable walk from the cruise ships too. While roaming around Old Town we stopped in here on a recommendation from a local. He said it's his favorite spot on the island. It's a dive bar through and through but I happen to be a big fan of dive bars! However, this one fell flat on it's face with the service. I wouldn't say the place was packed but there were not any open seats at the bar. I posted up the best I could but for the better part of 15 minutes both bartenders didn't even come to my side of the bar. I then moved to the other side and waited another 10 minutes to be served (at which point the bartender said "Didn't I just serve you?" Um, no, you most definitely did not. This place has two saving graces: 1) A water jug full of cold water for the taking, off in the corner. Love that. 2) A popcorn machine that had DELICIOUS popcorn! YES. If you can manage to get a beverage then I think you won't mind Green Parrot's (very) relaxed atmosphere and delightful little perks. Had a great time at charity bingo last monday! Bring cash and get there early! Bingo started at 7p and by 615p there were no available seats. It's pretty tricky to play bingo standing up lol. Every round of bingo there were either gift card or liquor bottle prizes, plus there were some free jello shots in the mix too! Liked that this dive bar was more of a local vibe than other places in key west (although I wouldn't consider the drinks a bargain). Another local hotspot that we checked out several times during our vacation and it had a cool vibe midday and late night. We stopped by for a cold brew (shout out to Crazy Lady beer) and some live music and noticed the dance floor was popular. Pool tables were also always stacked up. Free popcorn was a great perk. SO fun! Fantastic live music, open-air ish since the walls are windows try can pull up and latch so you can hangout on the sidewalk and enjoy the music and drinks. It's a "come as you are", no frills, flip flops, shorts and tshirt bar with good drinks. Service is solid. We see Trae Pierce & the T Stones there a couple of days in a row and thoroughly enjoyed! We stopped in for some cold drinks after a long bike ride. You can tell this is a favorite spot. The staff was super friendly and helpful, there's popcorn machines in the back, good tunes playing and a jovial atmosphere. They were open on Christmas Day and no one seemed to mind spending it together away from home. We had some beers and lemonade to cool ourselves down before continuing on. 12 years after our first visit here, we still consider it a highlight of a Key West trip. The most recent visit was on a Friday afternoon as part of a cruise stop. Point of sharing that is knowing we'd only be stopping at a handful of favorite places and had been excited to enjoy Green Parrot yet again. I did not have any food here so take that into account when reading this review! A drink of beer and the "Root Beer Barrel Shot, a Green Parrot tradition for over 20 years. Drop a shot of root beer schnapps into a highball glass of light beer and toss it back." Well, I cheated and didn't knock that one back, but I still drank it. Does that count? All while enjoying the popcorn from the self-service machine. Our large group had the bonus of a local telling us about the wooden parrot that was supposedly washed ashore from no one knows where. Don't dream too much about it -- it was x-rayed for contraband before being installed here. There is an image on the wall here with the original in the Louvre Museum. Can you guess which one? It is near the Mona Lisa in the museum and I assume the original is there as opposed to here -- yes, that's a joke. Awesome bar to visit on a Friday and Saturday night when Key West is hopping. We stopped in on our pub crawl last night and had an absolute blast. There was a 9-member Reggae Band called the Resolvers playing and they were amazing, and got everyone dancing. The bar staff were friendly and it only took a minute or two to get a drink. There was never a backup at the bar. They also have a popcorn machine here the dispenses fresh popcorn at the push of a button, what more can a bunch of drunkards ask for? Green Parrot is hoping! It's not a dive bar but it's not updated either. They have a rectangle bar on the left that you can go all around. Just beyond that is a stage area. In total it's not that big but people were packed in-- it was that weekend! They had maybe 12 drafts, several more than most bars in the area! The doors were open and they have a couple stools outside. We grabbed some next to giant open windows. You could put your drink on the window sill. The music was so loud, even being outside and partly blocked by the wall. I have no idea how people were 5 feet from the band. Very fun place. read more

Now this is my kind of bar. It's packed tight and the bar is in the middle of the room. The live band on the stage is right in front of you, about two feet away. Yes, I tried the root beer barrel shot and it's surprisingly good. It goes down very easily. No food other than the pretty darn good popcorn made fresh out of the machine. A friend told us we have to visit the iconic Green Parrot when we got to Key West. It must have some history or lore or something. It was a pleasant, somewhat divey bar (and that's a good thing for us; we're into that). We had a beer and sat outside on a very busy street watching the traffic and tourists go by. Lots of chickens in the area that certainly know how to cross the street. They used the crosswalks and knew how to avoid cars. Chickens are smart! I guess you have to be when you live in a resort town where it's illegal to get fed. At least it's also illegal to harass or harm them. We heard they are there because they're descendants of the cockfighting era. When that became illegal, all the chickens were let loose to fend for themselves. They looked OK, not scrawny or sick, so they're getting water and nutrition from somewhere. I visited the Green Parrot gift shop, but nothing grabbed my attention, so after a short visit we moved on. read more

Just off Duval, the green parrot is the epitome of a dive bar. My favorite bar in key west. Went on Christmas Eve and the night after Christmas. Side note Reggae Lou and the Kind Buds were playing. Great band if you get a chance to see them. Service was great. Heavy pours and friendly staff. The gift shop had some interesting items available. Bathrooms were clean. Awesome The Green Parrot is one of Key West's oldest ongoing drinking establishments. It certainly earns it reputation as an excellent and worthwhile drinking hole before, during or after a Duval Crawl. It basic and bar bones. Slightly rough around the edges in a perfect way. The drinks are decent and so is the Key West vibe is strong. The live entertainment is outstanding. So are the memorable cast of characters that inevitably float in and out each and every evening. It's reputed to be haunted we felt nothing, but did have lengthy exchanges with a three legged dog who was possessed by some spirit.
