Suits, dress shirts, a blazer, ties, a pocket square, and belts. Even a trendy umbrella I purchased back in 2017. Everything is custom-fit and custom-made from the highest quality standard materials that I've ever seen. I love the process from start to finish. Going through the books and samples and picking out the materials and designs. Coming in for the fittings. And then eventually walking out with my new swag and then wearing it for the first time. When my wife and I decided to get married, being one of two brides, I knew I wanted to wear a white suit versus a dress to fit my taste and style. The challenge being female wanting to wear a suit was that I was looking for a feminine, sexy and sleek suit that fit my body and was age appropriate. I did not want to wear a men's suit as it's just not me. After searching online from other vendors and ordering dozens of suits my frustration grew rapidly. The pants fit but the jacket didn't or vice versa. The style made me look much older than I am. The waist was too high, etc. I came to the conclusion that if I wanted to look sharp on our wedding day and feel comfortable that I would just need to have a suit custom-made from scratch. The next challenge was calling around to various tailors in Chicago to learn that many of them do not specialize in custom-made women's suits. None of the other tailors we called were willing to take up the challenge of creating a women's suit. That all changed when we called Richard Bennett Custom Tailors. My now sister-in-law called Richard Bennett and spoke with Cathy explaining the challenge we were facing. While Richard Bennett is generally known for men's suits, Cathy was happy to take me on as a client. I got in to meet with her in-person within a few days to discuss my vision for what I wanted the final product to look like. Cathy reassured me that they could literally create anything I wanted. I communicated that I wanted a 3 piece suit: pants, jacket, and sleeveless vest acting as a shirt. I also provided pictures of what I wanted each piece to look like to see if they could replicate. She took the time to walk me through the different types of fabrics and we talked through accent fabrics to ensure that the final product popped and was very formal for the occasion. Once the fabrics were decided on the seamstress, Vikki, took all of my measurements and began her work on my suit. Over the course of a few months, Cathy and Vikki worked tirelessly to make sure that my final vision was executed perfectly. While my wedding suit journey initially started with a ton of frustration, I can't stress enough how happy I was with the final product from these very talented ladies. That final fitting where I got to see my suit in its finished state, I had a HUGE smile on my face. I received a ton of fantastic feedback at my wedding from guests on how stunning the suit looked. I firmly believe the hard work by Cathy and Vikki stole the show that day and I am so grateful to have had them! I am a long time customer of Riddle McIntyre which is now a part of Richard Bennett Custom. I highly recommend their suits and shirts. I've have probably had off the rack dress shirts from many lux and near lux brands including Brioni, Armani, Pink etc. Even paying 400 for an off the rack, none of them fitted that well, Most of the time I was lucky if there was a near fit. I also tried some other custom shirt makers. I have bought about 10 -15 shirts over the years and the fit has been excellent, The one or two times there was an issue with the sizing, he handled the complaint to my satisfaction. I just picked up my 5th pair of pants I had them hemmed and taken in, and it will likely also be the last pair. Out of the 5 pairs, two were done right from the beginning. The other three they had to further work on them. The measurement was the same across five pairs, but one had a longer and shorter legs; one was shorter than the agreed measurement (by 1/4 inch); one I just picked up had one leg wider than the other (by 1/8 inch). The discrepancies are not a lot but those are expensive pants and I expect them to be taken care of with consistency. I paid $65 for the hemming and taking in for each pair, which I do not mind. And I was even about to let them make a $3,000 custom suit. But when I bring up the concern of tailoring to the saleslady, she seems offended and said "I do not know if you are unlucky (to have those issues happened), but based on your personality, I do feel we cannot meet your expectations here". When I further inquired how could that happen (merely to address the problem and avoid it from happening again), she replied "we made things right didn't we?", leaving me with a "you're not welcome here" sense of feeling. I did not ask for any compensation or discount for further services, and they did not bring it up either. I thought it'd be nice for them to let the actual tailor apologize for the inconvenience. Not surprisingly that did not happen. For their craftsmanship, I should give 3-4 stars if not more. But the overall experience has indeed had a lot of room for improvement. To be fair, it is a good tailor shop while both sides are happy. They will not (or maybe not willing to) try to rebuild your confidence once you are on the fence of losing it. read more

I was getting married in October of 2009 and I went to Richard Bennett to have a suit made. I admit that it was short notice, they had about 17 days to complete the job, and I agreed to pay a $300.00 rush delivery fee. The order was very straight forward; a black single breasted, two button ventless jacket with tick stitching. I came in for two fittings. The pants were well cut, and constructed, the jacket was a nightmare. The sleeves and the bottom of the jacket were too short and the shoulders were completely wrong The final iteration of the jacket before the wedding was going to have to work, because it was two days before the wedding. The proof came when I saw the wedding pictures and I could see the huge gap between the top of my belt and where the jacket came together. This is now in the permanent record of my wedding pictures. I went back in to see Jim, and express my displeasure over the way that the jacket came out. He offered to alter the jacket and get it right. I went back for at least three more fittings before he offered to start over with a new jacket. Someway, somehow the jacket still did not come out right, and is still too short and has too much room in the front. I can't imagine charging someone a premium for a rush job on a product that still did not meet the specifications as agreed upon when I paid them in full as they requested. We went to Vietnam for our honeymoon. I had five beautiful, hand made suits that fit perfectly, and were completed in less than two days (with fittings). The cost for those five suits all together was almost half of what I paid at Richard Bennett. I even offered to leave one of the jackets that was made in Vietnam for them to use as a template, unfortunately, they declined the offer because they felt they had it fixed. read more

I have also worked with other top bespoke tailors in London, New York, Montreal, And Toronto. (As well as some of the best custom MTM tailors from Hong Kong.) The quality of the hand-stitched button holes, the precision of the pressing, the evenness of the stitching in the seams - it is the details of construction which truly set the bespoke garment apart. The details are where this small shop excels. If you want that one perfect power suit, this is the place to get it - with precisely the fabric, lining, construction, and details you want. A 10% cashmere/90% wool blend charcoal with red pinstripes in a 2 button single breasted with peak lapels, hacking pockets ( including ticket pocket), side vents, a red paisley lining, working cuff buttons, a 5-button waistcoat with lapels, and trousers with kiss-pleats - no problem. You choose the exact fabric, and the exact features you want. No settling for what happens to be on the rack. No limitation to only two or three made-to-measure ("MTM") choices. Need help choosing the right combination of alternatives - that's what these guys do. If you are seeking the sartorial equivalent of the audiophile's reference system, or the oenophile's bottle of '77 Petrus, this is the place. That said, they will also produce a product that less demanding sorts will immediately recognize as quality. Do not try to rush the process. This is a small shop - not a factory front. Bespoke is not like made-to-measure. If you approach the process with factory expectations you are setting yourself up for frustration. My husband paid a deposit to get a tuxedo shirt for our wedding. He should have asked me to go with him and I would have spotted the poor customer service right away. The receipt he received was a manual typed receipt and did not itemize the style and design choices he had chosen. It showed how much he put for a deposit and what was owed. They have been lacking in responding to us via email and phone, pretending to have "thought they left messages". We waited almost 2weeks before getting an email and forget about calling. They either don't pick up the phone or they don't care enough to return voicemails. Proper service for a custom made item is to contact the person paying and actually speak to them or keep contact via email until they respond. With COVID I understand businesses being shut down, but if you design custom made shirts that are $300, you should be contacting your clients not the other way around. We ended up cancelling the order and of course they said it's ready. But NEVER called or emailed to say it was until we asked for a refund. I had to go through my credit card company to contest the charge. We're going to find another tuxedo shop that actually gives a crap about clients and isn't running a scam. Beware. read more

William took care of me in an entirely professional manner that still made the experience fun. I ordered two pairs of pants initially, and after seeing the fit and the quality of the work, have now ordered two more, plus a suit. I also ordered a shirt and look forward to seeing how that comes out. I am sure that it will be excellent. The price was also a pleasant surprise. Due to my own poor planning, I ended up in a situation where I needed 24-hour turnaround on alterations for a suit I was planning to wear to a formal wedding out of state, or else to spend more time and money than I'd prefer to spend finding something appropriate to this wedding. I called many establishments in the Loop who I thought might be able to fulfill this request. Richard Bennett Custom Tailors were the only ones who promised they could accommodate me despite the tight turnaround time. I spoke with William over the phone to schedule when I'd be in to be measured and when I'd be in to pick up the altered suit, and I worked with William and another member of their team to specify the alterations needed. The service was professional and excellent throughout the entire experience, the finished product was completed and available to be picked up with enough time for me to make my flight, and it fit perfectly. If you're looking for a tailor who delivers excellent service in the Chicago area and especially in the Loop, they'd be my first and only recommendation. read more

RBCT has become my go-to tailor in Chicago. Conveniently located and unbeatable in terms of both quality and customer service. A real classic place that makes you feel proud to be a Chicagoan. I've had many pants altered here and they always do an expert job with fastidious attention to detail. I've also had one shirt made in the shop and it fits like a dream, hope to replace my shirt wardrobe at this place someday. I've also had one suit commissioned on their more affordable price track that is made in a partner factory in New York. It's a gorgeous suit that fits me perfectly and only tempts to me have more made through or by this shop. (Whereas the Chicago-made suits are "bespoke," the NY made suits are super high quality made to measure. We also did 2 fittings in Chicago after the suit came in to ensure perfect fit.) In sum, I highly recommend for all your tailoring needs, whether simple alterations of hand-made suits. There's no other place that comes close. I'm a very finicky guy and these guys have never made me less than completely satisfied. read more

It took me a while to decide whether or not to write this review. I had to have another tailor fix some the alterations they did (one requested repair was never performed even though I left the garment twice). The shirts I had made are nice (button holes are too tight, and there is too much fabric on the interior of the cuffs making creases show up in the cuffs). I didn't have very good interactions with my salesman (Jim) but did with the other salesperson (Cathy). I had to go with 2 stars. Not quite A-OK (3 stars), and I have experienced better. read more

A friend recommended Richard Bennett tailors which I visited wearing a pair of pants in the style I wanted. After four visits there I have a pair of pants made from very nice material with very poor fit. To each visit I wore a pair of pants of the type and fit I was looking for in order to make clear what I wanted. Three tailors were involved and they didn't or weren't capable of making well-tailored suit pants correctly. The pants drape badly and look "bunched up." I won't wear them as is, but I will take them to my excellent local tailor and have her fix them if she can. Richard Bennett Tailors failed and I can't recommend them. read more

I don't like writing these reviews, but found this particular instance integral in order to let other consumers be aware. I had a relationship with this shop, and enjoyed their service and products. Anytime you are spending a premium on custom clothing in a market that continues to have more competitors and more options for custom clothing at lower costs, you pay for the service. Pretty simple. You might hear the argument how a product speaks for itself which any salesperson will obviously use, but to be honest, paying a substantial premium isn't the reason why you go to a place like this. You pay for the service. That service used to be there, but unfortunately, matters changed. Mistakes happen and they messed up an order. It happens. But how the matter was handled after the matter of fact, highly disappointing in an industry that can charge a premium in exchange for a quality product and service. An apology was given, but fact is, product was never delivered and the only consequence was that the consumer got affected. The place, once a larger shop in a nice location, has evolved into an unorganized store in a different location that is a fraction of what it used to be. Unfortunately, it is obviously not the same place as it once used to be ironically in a market with numerous competitors. Please do your due diligence before you decide to move forward and google another shop. read more

Moved out of the area a few years ago - need to go back soon. The shirts I purchased from here must have been to the cleaners at least 50 times by now and still look new. I don't shave every day, and as a result, collars of my shirts get frayed, but my RB shirts still look great. Not inexpensive, but the quality is worth the $$. read more

When something fits right, you want more. I do plan on getting pants and a suit soon. I will definitely be going here. The service was nice, friendly and asked me what I was looking for and not pushing things I didn't ask for. I'm a guy, when I go shopping I go for what I need and don't "window shop". It's true that this place does a nice job like all the other reviews mention, however that doesn't justify the pretentious attitude of the people that work there. The moment my boyfriend walks with his suit to be fixed, the attending guy, Jim if I'm not mistaken, rudely hosts him into the store ( by telling him that they don't alter this brand of suit - pretty much we don't want your business). Thanks to his quiet nature, my boyfriend didn't make a big deal out of it and patiently worked with Jim to fix his suit. The second time around we brought in a jacket that needed quite a few alterations and when we picked it up, the arms looked ridiculously big compared to the rest of the jacket. When we called back the store to let them know that alterations had made the jacket practically unwearable because of disproportionate looks this is the answer we got from Jim: ( after not letting me explain the situation because he was yelling at the same time I was trying to talk on the phone, accusing me of having an aggressive tone while he was the one yelling at me, refusing to do business with me since I was the girlfriend and not the guy himself- I had to include all of these descriptions so you guys can get a feeling of the setting in which the conversation took place) " IIT IS NOT OUR JOB TO GIVE ADVICE TO THE CLIENT. WE ONLY DO WHAT WE ARE TOLD " I was expecting to at least get a call from them , to let me know that if we do this kind of modification to the jacket , the outcome might not be ideal and something might look funny. However looks like these people follow strict orders and no matter what I had to pay 65$ for a useless alteration and get treated like garbage by a rude salesmen. Such a shame ! read more

These guys are great. I had my first made-to-measure suit built for me recently after having two done at Balani. What a difference. They use similar materials but the difference in quality is apparent from the beginning. They take a lot more measurements and the clothes come back slightly big so their in house tailors can make all of the finishing touches onsite after you try on what's made offsite. That makes a big difference for getting the right fit. At Balani they send if offsite to China (RB's are made offsite in the US) and make very minor adjustments when it comes back and only if they need to. Unfortunately with Balani my suit came back with too short with the pants and one of the shirts was also so short that I don't even wear it. I think RB might be $100 or more expensive than Balani, but that money is well spent if you're going the made to measure route. I searched around for a while based on on-line reviews and originally chose Balani, but now wish I could return those two suits and get two more from RB. While the price might be similar the quality of Richard Bennett is definitely a step up, or at least in my experience with three suits total (two balani and one RB). They are worth checking out if you're in the market for a made to measure or custom suit. read more

I've bought shirts from this place for years. The company has lost its way and customers, including me. The last straw I ordered shirts in November. Shirts promised in Decemember. Never receiveed the shirts. Repeatedly emailed and called Jim....no response. Magically after I dispute the credit card transaction the shirts are delivered by UPS. The problem, I never received the shirts. Who sends a $1770 package in Chicago and does not request a signature. Call the village, they have lost their idiot. read more

Let me start by saying that this was not my first time getting custom shirts and since I walked by RB several times I decided to give them a try. When measurements were taken, I thought it went a little fast but figured maybe it was that he had a lot of experience. Once the shirts were ready and I tried them on I found that they were a little loose and bubbly at the sides and the collars where two big for my liking. RB did try to make them better, replaced the collars, and adjusted the sides but the lengths on the sleeves are in my opinion to small. Unfortunately I didn't find this out until I actually tried to wear the shirts and by this point I was to frustrated with the whole situation that I didn't want to take them back again for a third time so I ended up with shirts I can't wear. I found other tailors in Chicago that I am very happy with and will probably stick with them. read more

The prices are fair - not cheap - but that is what you should expect for custom clothing. Overall a great experience. Sorry for the delayed update - but the tux came out PERFECTLY! It's hard to believe it's the same suit. When we took it in, my then-boyfriend-now-fiance had said he didn't plan to buy a new tux for our wedding. I thought he'd lost his mind. Now, tailored and customized, I'm on board. RB's work was impeccable, the tux now hangs/drapes beautifully, and, frankly, the fiance looked 20lbs thinner. What else could you ask for? read more

I would give zero stars, but unfortunately Yelp does not provide that option. My first experience involved having a small tear in a suit pant fixed. The job was satisfactory, mostly because I had very low expectations going in. The kicker was when they price-gouged me for $10 since I came in unannounced and knew I hadn't researched other options. I read on here that someone paid $65 for an entire suit jacket alteration. I'm not one to piss and moan over a couple bucks once a service has already been provided. I find that negotiating such small differences will result in a piss-poor job being done. I prefer to let them assume they will get whatever price they want, do the best job, and just be done with it. However, clearly I was fleeced, and they would rather step over a dollar to pick up a penny. My second experience involved a request to have a few measurements taken for a custom suit that is being made in another state. Immediately, I was cutoff and told that "unfortunately, this is a service [they] cannot provide." I find that hard to believe considering they are in the business of making CUSTOM SUITS. Given the economy, I can't imagine anyone passing up free money just for taking a few measly measurements (when I went into their store, it was a ghost town, so I can't imagine they are "killing" it - pardon the pun). Perhaps they felt slighted because I wasn't giving them my business? Had they let me finish, then they would've known that the choice to go with someone from another state has entirely to do with the fact that the GROOM lives in said state, and has no idea who these guys are etc... So, for obvious reasons, suits are being made in another state and I simply needed some run-of-the-mill measurements to be able to provide another tailor. The individual on the phone attempted to claim reputation as their reasons for not assisting, as if to imply that if my suit - made in an entirely different state - would somehow give Richard Bennett a bad rep if it didn't turn out well. I politely explained to them that they would not be held accountable for anything beyond providing these basic measurements (which I had instructions for on a form provided to me - something so simple I could almost do myself if I had a third hand). Now, if you are reading this, you'll probably say, "well this reviewer didn't actually have a suit made by RB." And you would be correct. I can't attest to their work, and quite frankly I probably never will because I am OCD and EXTREMELY picky about how my clothes fit (and not just suits). I have found that communicating one's preferences to a tailor is a different beast altogether. That being said, from the few reviews here, I will never go there for a custom suit. What you should take away from this, however, is that in my two interactions with this group, I have concluded that they are 1) rude and 2) greedy. And it seems Yelpers agree. My guess is your experience will be a miserable one. There are so many better, unheard of tailors who do a far better job for cheaper. Most of them, sadly, are overseas. But, this is the American way. End Tirade ****UPDATE**** The owner, Albert, upon seeing my review, contacted me via Yelp and was extremely apologetic. Albert, Cathy nad Jim are always very helpful with my suit, sport jacket and trouser selections. They know all the current styles and never hesitate to make a suggestion. I am a woman and had been on a quest to find a custom made suit for quite some time. I simply can't buy off the rack due to my "unique" body type. I had tried my hand with a national chain and walked away with 3 pairs of slacks that didn't fit to my specifications that were expensive and had to say "no" to the jacket. I was left to feel it was me and not them... Enter Richard Bennett. I shared with Cathy my previous experience and she was confident that they could accommodate me. In approximately 10 weeks, I now have a beautiful, custom made suit that fits me like the proverbial glove. I had chosen a more expensive fabric so we decided to do a mock up of the pants in a lesser fabric. The first fitting, the jacket was almost perfect. Tears came to my eyes that it wasn't me and that there are tailors who could nail a jacket for me. The pants took a few iterations, but we got them too! It was good to work with tailors who are onsite. I got to interact with the women who created my suit, not just a sales person. Cathy had a good eye and was able to guide the process. I should note that the suit would have been done earlier had it not been for my travel schedule delaying the fittings! They always met or exceeded their timelines.
