Myself and two friends did the brunch cookery class here a couple of months back and I only now realise I forgot to review it.... I think it was because I wasn't sure what to give it, as the experience was wildly varying.
I shall start at the bottom and work my way up, so here goes; bad things:
- One of the dishes we cooked really wasn't very nice. It wasn't even a good idea, even a non-american such as myself can see that grits weren't really invented to be put into souffles. Unfortunately, it was also the dish we got to cook, so my sense of acheivement was pretty low.
- Although it's a cooking party with a big long menu, you only get to cook one of the items. You are split into groups and sent off to do one dish between around 5 people. My first task was to grease ramekins. I was a bit nonplussed by that.
- I found the manner of someone explaining what 'bespoke' meant to me (and everyone else, obviously) extremely patronising. I'm not 6, and I'm not going to put my hand up to answer a question in a room full of strangers. It doesn't mean I don't have a basic vocabulary. Sorry, one of my pet hates.
- When we booked, our confirmation was returned with a start time of 6.30pm. We thought it strange, for brunch, so rang to confirm on the Friday - sure enough, it's at 11am. What if we hadn't called to check? No apology or even a hint of surprise, which was worrying!
- They also directed us to a liquor store that was closed, and then told us the nearest one was 'just 4 blocks away' - it was more like ten! And we were treated like naughty schoolchildren for not being more organised.
- Asking for a gratuity in a crass way (being presented with a bill when you've already paid 'just in case') is, well, crass, when we poured our own drinks and, er, cooked it ourselves. We couldn't work out if this was us being weird, but on reflection, I still think it's crass.
- I think $80 is a lot to pay for this type of thing. Thankfully I had a groupon. I thought I would learn more. I guess it's more for big parties of people, for a special occasion or a corporate event - I can see how that would work better.
Good things:
- The staff are very friendly and knowledgable and I did feel that if I wanted to, I could at least recreate the grit souffle at home, because we got to follow every step.
- BYOB! For brunch that meant mimosa upon mimosa
- Relaxed atmosphere meant we could also stay and enjoy our mimosas until we were done, we weren't hurried out, just chatted to the chefs while they tidied/watched the game on TV/ate some food. We also got talking to the other people there and so it's a nice sociable occasion.
- The recipes are well-thought out for making in groups and the food is GOOD because of that (amateurs like me can't wreck it!). All the dishes were great bar the souffle, and there was plenty to go round.
- Recipe cards to take home are nice.
I have mixed emotions because it wasn't quite what I expected and a couple of things really irked me, but I can see that this would be great for a family to do together or in another circumstance. So a solid 3 stars. read more
