Blue Plate Catering had various dinner options for purchase at this year's Dîner en Blanc. We ordered the Chicken Provençal box ($82.84 for two) and it was delicious! The food was plentiful and fresh and included, besides the stuffed chicken breast, salad, vegetables, cheeses, duck rillettes, a demi baguette and three small desserts. From customer service to quality of food to unbelievably aesthetically-pleasing plating, they just do everything the right way all the time. I reached out to Blue Plate for my wedding next year (21) and got an initial response and budget. I loved the menu and the price was in my range. After i responded to Trish it took 2 email follow ups and a call for me to finally to get her to respond. After I provided her with details that hopefully get her going on a potential proposal or (I thought she would suggest to get on a call). She then was tell me that her normal price range was $40-50 dollars per person over what she originally said. It was like pulling teeth and as if my business was good enough for her. And even now when i check me last email she has still yet to respond 15 days later. I went with a different caterer but I felt that it was important to note this experience as not bride wants to be treated this way. read more

Never hired them myself, but I attended a wedding at The Newberry Library last night and enjoyed the food so much that I asked who the caterer was. And apparently Blue Plate was responsible for this delicious food! Everything was very good, but if you happen to be using Blue Plate for a party here were some of my favorites: Cocktail Hour: Mini crab cakes (had a little spicy kick to them) Butternut squash soup (perfect for a cold night like last night) Reception: Spinach salad with goat cheese (anything with goat cheese makes me happy and this salad was no exception) They served a beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes, and the bite I had was very tasty. Everyone at the table cleaned their plates- always a good sign!I asked for a vegetarian option because I've been having problems with my too small esophagus lately (weird, I know) and didn't want to eat meat. I was expecting some sort of pasta, but it ended up being some sort of shell filled with lots of veggies- it was so good and I appreciated the caterer being so accommodating. For dessert we had an apple caramel wedding cake that may have just been the best cake I've ever tasted, but I don't think Blue Plate is responsible for that. But as soon as I do find out who's responsible for that cake I'll be writing a review and will be visiting that bakery for more cake! :) read more

My work was having a little event and needed catered food to wow the staff. WOW they did. They came with: A veggie salad Ranch and this creamy vinaigrette in cute bottles Corn Tortillas Chicken Fajitas Beef Fajitas Rice Beans cookies I must comment them on their timely manner and their efficiency! I love how they set everything in order of how people will pick up the food. They seem like a company that is oriented towards quality not quantity. The person who they sent was pleasant. I had to bust one star for the expensiveness but it was worth it....when if I didn't know about their perfectly cooked creations...I would not choose them simply because of the price listings. Blue Plate catered my wedding at River East Art Center on July 13 this year. I worked closely with Ken, and expectations were exceeded beyond anything I could have hoped for. They made me feel like my wedding was the only one they were working on... which was definitely not the case. To start, I had an hour long conversation with Ken to determine a suitable package of food and drink. At this point nothing was signed, zero commitment, we were simply talking about what they offer and what we would like at our wedding. During this conversation Ken gave invaluable suggestions that were specific to the reception space we had secured. He was a wealth of knowledge and professional through and through. Not to mention the attentiveness of emails, down to the last detail of me emailing to confirm things like the way the napkins would be folded. While I felt silly sending the emails, they never waned in patience and attention to all of these small details. Blue Plate worked with all of my vendors (florist and lighting mainly) to the point that I pretty much didn't even need to interact as the middle man. Once the day came along, my husband and I felt like the king and queen. We had a dedicated staff member making sure we had drinks and enough to eat. She handled everything including making sure our belongings and the bridal/groomsmen's belongings were secure. It was such an unexpected treat that made us feel so special. Also, very early on in planning with Blue Plate I mentioned to Ken that the grooms party like "captain and coke" drinks. Well sure enough... I barely remembered even saying this, and each groomsman spot at the head table had an ice cold captain and coke waiting for them after introductions. Additionally, my parents and my husband's parents had staff members specifically looking after their needs and wants as well. Of course, this wouldn't be complete without mentioning the actual food and drinks. For apps we chose mini cheeseburgers, a gazpacho shooter, and bacon wrapped dates. They tasted absolutely delicious, and looked SO great on the serving plates! Our guests were obsessed with the mini cheeseburgers. Then for dinner we did a chicken option and the petit tender beef option. Both were delightful, as was the vegetarian option! I'm not a vegetarian but almost chose it for myself because I loved it so much during the tasting. Overall, fabulous experience! My husband and I were married a couple of weeks ago and we had the pleasure of working with Missy Wright at Blue Plate for all of our catering needs and could not be more thrilled with how it all came together! We wanted to create a customized menu that would give our family and friends a more personalized, fine dining experience and Missy and the team knocked it out of the park - it was amazing! For cocktail hour, we had some fun bites - tuna tartare, lamb chops, shrimp​, mac and cheese bites, but each one of these was​ easy to eat and had a modern update to them - our guests kept telling us how wonderful they were! For dinner, we did a plated meal with a customized first course. My husband used to own a farm and they harvested sweet corn. Missy and her culinary team wrote an entire first-course​ trio based around corn as the ingredients - everyone loved it! And for entrees, we had a choice of halibut or filet which were major hits - and the vegetarian option was out of this world too! Desserts seemed to keep on coming. There were so many bites, everyone kept taking more and more and more - and they were so good! And it all ended with Chicago Style Hot dogs for our out of town guests and walking tacos - let's​ just say, no one went hungry. I would rate the Food quality 4-5 stars as almost all of the different items we had were very tasty, and my guests enjoyed the food. No one raved about any one particular item, so it wasn't anything that special. The problem I had was the portion size for the amount of money they charged me. As soon as we opened up the containers, there was no way there was enough food for 30 people. One of the items was small turkey tea sandwiches. They had a one inch diameter circular piece of bread with the same tiny size piece of sliced turkey on it. (30 of these for $85) You get the picture? I had to immedietly order 4 large pizzas to supplement the lack of enough food. So now I have these frou frou food items next to a bunch of pizzas. When I told a couple friends that the order was $863 for the food, they just laughed and couldn't believe it! I would suggest staying away from this caterer if you are having a birthday party, super bowl party or such events if you are not working with a wedding budget. I recently worked with Blue Plate for a private event for my association at the Willis Tower, and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the end result. I start by saying that because initially I was a bit put off by the fact that I had to "create" my own menu. Don't get me wrong - I would normally jump at the chance to do that and would love doing it, but knowing how particular my boss and the association are about quality and standard of food for events, I was nervous about this. Not to mention that I am a vegetarian and the VIPs at my association are hard-core meat eaters. Our theme was "Taste of Chicago" (no, not the chaos that ensues every July in the city), but some the most well-known neighborhoods such as Greektown, Pilsen, Little Italy, and Chinatown. The rep I was working with was extremely nice, but I felt like it was an uphill battle getting a proper menu started with her. I found out later that they were in the process of changing their system, and that's why she would substitute items I requested as place holders so that it could still be included in the final cost since I was also budget conscious. All I have to say is the end result was amazing! The space they decorated looked beautiful, all the guests raved about the food, and the staff was amazing - very professional and polite. I felt like royalty at our tastings and like a queen at my wedding. Helen was the best to work with and I know our wedding went so smoothly because of her. We selected our venue, A New Leaf in Chicago, and Rachel from Blue Plate happened to be there meeting with a client that same day. She was so bubbly and pleasant and gave us her card right away and the rest is history. We felt so taken care of and she is a true professional and industry expert. During our tasting the food and service blew us away and we trusted her so much that we selected many of our other vendors from her recommendations. During the planning process we felt like Rachel always had a knowledgeable answer for literally every little detail. The wedding day did not disappoint either - we had a team making sure we were staged for the ceremony, prompted us for walking down the aisle and greeted our guests with cocktails immediately after walking out of the ceremony space. Elinor and Ellen were amazing to work with day of. Our personal server was such a nice touch too - we were able to enjoy many apps, full plated meals and always had a drink in hand...he even found us on the dance floor later in the night :) The food we had was buffet style and open seating, but easily the best wedding food I have ever had. Our guests raved about the Fall menu and also about the wait staff and bartenders. Overall the wedding planning process can feel intimidating and we can easily say that working with Blue Plate was a huge factor in making the process stress free and fun - and the quality exceeded our expectations. We used Blue Plate for our wedding at A New Leaf. As soon as we said where we were getting married, they assigned us Rachel based on her knowledge of the venue. She was a dream. She's handled hundreds of weddings there and knows the ins and outs of the venue to tailor it perfectly to your vision. We had multiple conversations with Rachel leading up to the event, and even took her out for a working lunch. She was attentive and addressed all of our (read: my) concerns. All of our guests raved about our food. Luckily, Rachel was on site and came to me a few times with plates of food to make sure I ate. I would not have had she not done this - I was too busy talking to everyone! We had burgers, fries, cheese curds, a mozzarella bar, and some banging' appetizers. Most notably the bacon wrapped dates. My husband and i just got married at theater on the lake in chicago a week ago and used blue plate for all our catering and service needs. They were simply amazing and we highly recommend working with them. The food was outstanding and the service was top notch. As anyone who has been married before knows, catering is the big boy. It is the bulk of the investment, it is what people remember, and it can be the toughest decision. My husband and I are so glad we chose Blue Plate! We had a few moments where we thought it might be worth it to save a few pennies and go with a less reputable company -- I mean do people reallllly notice? YES. They notice. We noticed. Thank goodness we went with Blue Plate! Let's start with the most important piece - the actual product. The food was DELICIOUS. We were a little nervous that the food was at it's best in our tastings (yes, multiple because the staff at BP is so accommodating they let us taste twice with both sides of the family) and there would be no way to replicate that with 200 people. Boy were we wrong. There literally was not a morsel of food left on any plate. This was not because there wasn't enough food but literally because it was so damn good. We got married a week ago and people have not stopped calling/writing to tell us how amazing the food was. We had the pleasure of working with a ton of BP staff. One of our friends, Calvin, works at BP and immediately put us in great hands with Melissa. I loved that even though Calvin was our buddy, he didn't work on events like this in his role and just put us in the right hands straight off the bat. He checked in on us and made sure we were ok but didn't ever overstep and let us foster our own relationship with the team members who would ultimately work our event. Melissa left Blue Plate to pursue a different opportunity (no drama, just a fact of life) in the middle of our planning. Our transition to Elinor and Nick was so seamless. We not only received communication from Melissa about her departure but we were reached out to by other management at BP and and assured nothing would fall through the cracks. Let me tell you, nothing did. Elinor and Nick took my husband and I out in person just to make sure they were up to speed and we were feeling good. They were sweet and attentive and genuinely excited to work with us! They were super helpful leading up to the big day and joined us for the final walk through at our venue despite working an event there the weekend before. They knew what they were doing but just came to make us feel supported and to ensure everything was perfect. One of the best things about a wedding with BP is the personal server assigned to the bride and groom. Ali was THE BEST! She was waiting with our signature cocktails the moment we finished walking down the aisle. She made sure we tasted every single thing and was never intrusive. Nick was a hit at the wedding as well. Numerous family members complimented him and said he was so enjoyable to be around. Elinor came up to the bridal suite in the middle of set up just to wish us good luck and tell us all was well. Blue Plate Catering was the company that my daughter chose for her wedding recently. They were absolutely wonderful! Rain came to spoil the beginning time of the outside ceremony, but 45 minutes later, it miraculously stopped. The catering staff were right there to make sure that the tables were moved inside during the rainstorm, and back outside when the rain stopped. They were fast and efficient. The appetizers were wonderful, especially the shrimp on grits and the mini tacos. The waitstaff couldn't have been nicer, especially Teresa, and the main bartender. They didn't rush us between courses (a pet peeve of mine), and the food was hot, not served cold. My daughter and her new husband were very pleased too, as were my husband and the other guests. I hate the fact that I must revisit this review after nearly a year and a half, but recent situations have brought new things to light. The idea that I cannot expect catering to be well done when I have only paid $11.00/head is absurd. My experience with Blue Plate was simply an example of a BIG company losing sight of what it perceives to be the small customer. You can get dinner for two at McDonald's for $11.00. You can get a burger and fries at Chili's for $11.00. You can get a medium pizza at Calo's for $11.00. I am sure I can go on and on about the things you can buy for $11.00 and so can Scott, even if he doesn't want to. Regardless, the price I payed was never at issue. The issue was that I was contractually promised one thing and that thing was not what I received. When I went to Blue Plate so they could make amends, none was offered, short of cutting extra fees that all caterers put into their contracts, right?( and by the way, if I were a doctor and I knew another doctor was doing the wrong surgery, yes I would say something about it....and so it goes with Blue Plate.) The fact of the matter is that you don't have to agree with me. I am not asking you to agree. I wrote about an experience I legitimately had with Blue Plate. It WAS NOT GOOD and I would nevereverever go there for catering again. Other people seem to like them and that is fine. That is their opinion. For my opinion, in the last year, I have been responsible for hiring caterers for 8 different events...none of those were Blue Plate. The use of this forum to knock down another reviewer's experience, not with his own good experience, but at the expense of another reviewer's experience makes his opinion suspect. 76975 stars for the service!! Seriously...the customer service was THAT good! Anyways... =] I went here to do a wedding tasting with friends who are getting married next December. The place is very easy to find and SUPER cute! The decor makes it feel like you are in someone's dining room when you are doing the tasting which I loved, you just felt at home. Our hostess for the two hour tasting was Missy, who I must say was uh-mazing!! She definitely appreciated the awesomeness that was our group, which takes a special person to appreciate!! HA! She was very knowledgable about everything and anything that we wanted to know, which was refreshing. So, we tried about 30 items, yes you are reading correctly...we had a feast of samplings and wine. OMG...the wine...it was so good. I HAD to have had like 6 glasses! Lush. But seriously, everything was good and some things were amazing! The standouts for me were the bacon wrapped scallop with an orange butter sauce dolloped on top, the little Asian inspired edible paper package, asparagus soup, jumbo shrimp and the chocolate creme brulee. This place has some SERIOUSLY good flavor combinations, the sizes I felt could be a tad bigger, but other than that, it was very good. I've been meaning to write this review for a while now, so I apologize it's taken me so long. My husband and I selected Blue Plate and Missy in particular to cater our wedding last July. We had tastings with two other companies and were immediately drawn to how relaxed and non sales pushy Missy was. Of course the food was delicious as well, but it was really her willingness to work with us on the menu and all the the little details including helping us get the most for our money that pushed Blue Plate past the other companies and right into our top pick. The weeks leading right up the the wedding were of course stressful, however everything was made so much easier with Missy's confidence that things would run smoothly (which they did) and her very helpful assistant, Ritu, was always around to answer my emails almost immediately when Missy had to attend to other brides. All the guests at the wedding raved about the food, which included some not so traditional items like chicken and waffle apps and late night biscuit sandwiches with pulled pork. The service was also impeccable and my husband and I never had even a half empty drink in our hands all night. I could easily go on and on about Blue Plate and the fantastic food and service they provide, but the bottom line is if you're looking for low stress and really unique and tasty food, I could not recommend them enough. read more

The tasting was fabulous. We worked with Missy Wright, and cannot say enough good things about their professionalism and the quality of the food they presented us. The attention to detail goes beyond what is expected - they are clearly one of the best! Although we ended up choosing a different vendor for our wedding, I would like to leave a five-star review for them. It all came down to having the bar open all night vs. closing it during dinner. After very careful research, tastings and thought, we selected Blue Plate to cater our October wedding. As foodies, my now husband and I had a very specific vision for our fall wedding. Out of all the caterers we considered, Blue Plate takes the time to get to know your vision, likes & dislikes, favorite flavors, etc. before they send you a suggested menu, which I appreciated. And sure enough, their initial suggestions were far closer to what we envisioned than any other caterer who had not taken the time to get to know us before sending us a proposal. We worked primarily with Katie, and Laura did the proposals. Both of them were very accessible throughout our planning process and were happy to find ways to accommodate our requests and work with our budget. I found their tasting to be more professional and I think it ran more smoothly than other caterers we considered, and it was fairly easy to make our decision. They also worked very well with our other vendors. Now, everything can taste amazing when prepared onsite in a kitchen for just a few people. But when you are cooking somewhere offsite where you have to build a makeshift kitchen and cook for 125 people, things aren't always the same. I was extremely happy with all of the food at our wedding - I even think a few of the items tasted BETTER than they did at the tasting! Best caterer in Chicago, hands down. Blue Plate did my wedding at Architectural Artifacts, and they did an absolutely amazing job. When my husband and I went in for our tasting with Blue Plate, we were blown away. We had gone to 2 other tastings prior to this one, and the other ones were a distant memory after our experience here. The food was the best (literally) we had ever had from a caterer, and each thing that came out was more delicious then the last. Our wedding was a loosely themed wedding- Alice in Wonderland. Blue Plate did such a tasteful job putting together the tasting menu. Extremely CLASSY and upscale, not like some of the others we went to (they will remain nameless) but one caterer tried putting childrens playing card place mats on the table... you know, the shiny plastic kind... this was a big "uh-oh" moment. Haha. Blue plate got to our venue, set up, and was ready with cocktails as soon as our ceremony was over. The servers were amazing and SO friendly and attentive, and all of the 184 guests were happy happy people. Once everyone was seated and food started coming to the tables (within about 10 minutes) the whole crowd was blown away. The food was amazing and as my husband and I were making our table rounds, we noticed very, very clean plates. ;) They were so efficient and all of our guests raved all night about how the food was the "best food at a wedding" they'd ever had. There was never a dry glass (the staff was excellent with the wine pours) and my husband and I had our own server who followed as around making sure we always had a cold drink and/or whatever we wanted to eat all night. I could literally go on and on about the amazing service and quality of the food, but the real shining star of the night was our Blue Plate rep Laura Ekker. She basically saved me from crazy stressing bride mode. Poor Laura saw me at my most stressed ever! She was so calming and organized, there was something about her that immediately put me at ease. She took care of everything! Her 10+ years of experience in the industry (and as a party planner!) really showed. She swooped in and saved me from all of my worries; she took care of organizing every part of my wedding day from soup to nuts (haha, caterer joke... sorry). She even found kosher meals for my Aunt and Uncle who flew in to Chicago all the way from Israel, and dealt with many a high maintenance request with a smile. Every time I called her or emailed, she was in touch with me usually on the same day- super fast! Laura was the shining star of our wedding team without a doubt, and I'm fairly certain I couldn't have done it without her. She even waited upstairs with my and calmed me down right before I walked down the aisle, cuing the musicians and our procession. I'm not sure how she did it, but she was absolutely everywhere and nowhere all night, invisibly taking care of every tiny detail until midnight, making sure everything went flawlessly. We used Blue Plate to cater our wedding reception at Promontory Point. We chose them from the relatively short list of approved vendors for the Park District. Blue Plate was certainly on the more expensive end of the selection (if not the most expensive) but, in retrospect, it was absolutely the best choice we could have made. Michael, from Blue Plate, was amazing and absolutely stress-free to work with. The food was simply great, as wedding food goes. Even now, almost 3 years later, we still have friends comment on how the food at our wedding was the best they'd had and how it set a new bar. Every detail was top-notch. Michael even saw to it that a generous portion of appetizers were set aside for my wife and I as we arrived late because we were taking pictures. This small detail was never discussed or planned with us, they just had the foresight to do it. That's the sort of thing I'm talking about... read more

We chose Blue Plate to handle our daughter's wedding. She wanted to have a "stations" style dinner, rather than a traditional sit down dinner for her guests. We met with Elinor Brown to discuss options and she enthusiastically went to work to come up with creative options for our event. From cocktail hour, to dinner, to a "no wedding cake" dessert table, Elinor offered terrific ideas for achieving a great evening. I must admit, having been to a lot of weddings, that my expectations of "wedding food" for a crowd of 225 people were tempered. I can't tell you how surprised I was at how great all of the food was. Numerous friends who I'd call "foodies" said it was the best food they'd ever had at a wedding. All of it was really amazing. Beyond the quality and inspiration where food is concerned, the both Elinor and Nick were professional and truly unflappable in the face of what felt like constantly changing guest counts and menu preferences. Can't say enough about them. Thanks Elinor, Nick and the whole Blue Plate team for making our family's day even more special! read more
