Catered by Design catered our 160-guest wedding at the Woman's Club of Evanston, and they were absolutely amazing! We started working originally with Nikee, and later with Jen after she took over Nikee's role for our wedding. Both were stupendous at their job. Nikee was so helpful in setting up the tasting and making suggestions. The tasting itself, in Morton Grove, was such a treat. We enjoyed every bit of it and it really helped us decide what we wanted have for the wedding. Nikee was awesome and took down any modifications we requested for the foods (different dressing, having certain salad toppings on the side, slightly modifying one of the desserts, having different a drink mixer and mint for mojitos, etc) Jen was so great to work with, bringing up things that I never would have thought about, and worked seamlessly (as far as I could tell) with the DJ and venue to make sure everything ran smoothly. Now to the FOOD. The food was so delicious, people were raving about the food during and after the wedding. We had passed appetizers and opted to do the buffet, and they had so much food to go around, and had enough for seconds for the guests that wanted it. I'll post a pic of our menu, we loved ALL of it! I've attached a pic that includes the items we chose for the buffet. For dessert we did the decadent trio for which we chose the key lime tartlet, Carmelita brownies, and cheesecake lollipops. A few notes though, although I guess I should have specified with them directly, there should have been extra favors leftover (we had 200 for 160 guests) and we were unsure what happened to the extras. Our cake baker had also provided us with a box of macarons with a note on top indicating it was for us, and it also may have been cleaned up/tossed by accident at the end of the night. We were having a Vietnamese tea ceremony and also wanted to incorporate Mexican culture into our reception. They selected choices that fit the bill! Rachel J was like my wedding coordinator! She provided floor plans, logistics and always answered my "crazed" emails promptly. Everyone loved the food - even the Vietnamese guests who were used to more Asian cuisines. I have heard about this place many times on next-door, so I decided to go to the market on Saturday morning. Every Saturday during the summer they have a market where you can buy premade food and drinks. I purchased half of focaccia, a huge salmon salad, roasted potatoes and a vegetarian barley and tofu dish. To not have to cook and have quality food is amazing. The entire total was about $40 and the salad was definitely two meals. Everything else was split with my daughter. I will be back again for sure! Just sorry I didn't take any pictures to post. I was a vendor at an event and happened to be sitting right next to Catered by Design. Lucky for me because I was able to munch on all their delicious food throughout the day, but not so lucky for them because they probably didn't appreciate me chowing on their food all day long...although they couldn't have been nicer about it and kept telling me to eat more (and I'm always game for eating more!). There was a spread of many different things and believe me....I tried it all! My favorites were the sushi (no surprise there being the sushi addict that I am) and pita covered with some delicious spread and artichoke. So good that I just kept snacking on it all day long! The presentation of everything was also beautiful, which I find to be most important when researching good caterers. From the first moment we interacted with Catered by Design (CBD) for a tasting event at our venue, The Grove Redfield Estate, we knew this was going to be an amazing experience. Nikee answered several questions that first day we met, but she continued answering any and all questions I had all the way up to the week of our wedding. My fiancé and I went to dinner after our meeting with Nikee, and one thing stood out - Not once did she say 'No' to anything we discussed. The tasting event was a treat in and of itself, where we were able to pick out our dishes, linens, as well as the dishes. On the big day, Laura made us feel very well taken care of. Experienced this catering company at a wedding we attended. The passed appetizers were delicious and included: tuna tartare on wonton crisp, bacon wrapped date, veggie eggroll, crab cake, and tomato soup and grilled cheese shooters. My favorite was the crab cake, which was delicious and tasted of real shellfish despite being soft and not crispy on the outside. For the plated meal, the breads came with an assortment of pretzel rolls and white rolls with herbed compound butter. The salad was very fresh with strawberries, goat cheese, red onion, walnuts, and spring mix. The maple salmon with orzo and balsamic veggie kabobs were good, but the standout option was the medium rare steak medallion- tender, Smoky, with a rich reduction and mashed potatoes as well as tender greens. Dessert was a mini sampler plate of various things and was good too. Worked with Catered by Design for my daughter's wedding reception (Festive, not fancy!), which was held at Sketchbook Brewery in Skokie (also a fabulous place). The guest list ranged in age from 25-85, and my daughter wanted "grazing" the whole evening (4 hours), as opposed to a sit down or buffet meal. Jennifer was terrific helping us plan a variety of foods that could be staged in shifts as the evening went on. The skewers, sliders and salads we served during the dinner-ish section were delicious. Despite the fact that this section of service didn't start until an hour and a half into the event, they were hot, juicy and flavorful. All the guests raved about the food. Wes was our service captain, and he did an excellent job setting everything up, keeping trays & warmers stocked and cleaning and packing everything at the end, leaving us free to enjoy the evening. We hired Catered by Design for our wedding in September and they were absolutely fantastic! Everything clicked from the moment we booked them. Their service, food and presentation was impeccable. For our tasting, we had a wide variety of options to choose from. Everything was delicious and they even let us take our left over food home with us. We really enjoyed that our menu for the reception could be so unique. When it came time to our wedding day, we were so touched that they prepared a special plate of appetizers and drinks for us after the ceremony was concluded. It really helped us eat before we had to mingle with all of our guests. The champagne tree was a hit, and we had several guests tell us how beautiful and unique it was! Our meal started off with a Brussel sprout salad accompanied with a delicious bread basket. Then, there was a choice of either a chicken with black rice timbale and veggie skewer, salmon with lemon orzo, or vegan veggie stack. It was so hard for us to decide which one we had wanted because everything tasted amazing. We loved our desserts as there were several options of mini shooters and chocolates. Overall, the food tasted just as good at the wedding as it did at our tasting! We were delighted that we got to take food home with us after the wedding to continue the excitement of the day. My husband and I worked with Sam for our December wedding, and we made a pretty fab choice. The two biggest strengths were the food (options and quality) and Sam's flexibility and service orientation. First, we had to narrow down the huge array of choices into a menu that would suit ourselves and our guests. I do not eat most meats; my husband does. My family includes vegetarians, and there were a handful of other restricted diets among our guests. We decided on three entree choices to satisfy everyone, and they actually did. People who didn't have anything to gain by lying to me told me how much they liked their dinners. Excellent! Back to the vegetarians for a minute. First, my husband and I tasted a vegetarian pasta option but we were underwhelmed, so Sam presented an alternative they hadn't officially added to their offerings yet: a vegan polenta with grilled vegetables in a stack. Both of us tried it and both of us loved it. It went over very well with our vegetarian guests as well, both because it wasn't pasta and because it was tasty, healthy and filling. As for Sam, he accommodated us further on the dessert front. My husband is a whoopie pie aficionado and since whoopie pies were not among Sam's dessert options, he allowed for us to provide our own to be set out along the other sweets. (At this time allow me to shout out to Rise n' Roll for providing the 6 dozen whoopie pies and delighting my husband possibly more than I do.) Then, he saved the day when our cake baker went out of business, 7 days before our wedding, with absolutely no warning. (At this time allow me to shout AT Rolf's Patisserie: Who does that?!?!) We had a relatively simple design, so luckily Sam was able to arrange a cake to be made by another bakery he works with. If Sam was panicked, I didn't feel it. I just knew he was going to get it done and I didn't need to worry about it. If there's an area for improvement, it is the day-of communication and game plan. I met our captain and had to go over a couple details during cocktails, which means I wasn't with our guests. And afterwards, the catering staff cleaned up the table decorations (candles in votives) by throwing most of them out, until I think the site manager noticed and asked them to save them. Overall though, the most important aspects of catering were handled very well and we would choose Sam again if we were to have another wedding (which we totally should - it was awesome!). read more

My husband and I only had four months to plan our August wedding. We happened by chance to consider renting the affordable Glenview Park District building to use the lake as a backdrop for our ceremony. Catered by Design is their exclusive caterer but we couldn't have chosen better. We were lucky to work with owner Sam Gray, who kindly met with us a couple times to ensure we could have the wedding we wanted. He was cordial, helpful, and patient from the beginning. He listened to our preferences and never tried to steer us in any other direction or to "up sell" anything. His integrity and pride in his company made us feel safe and happy in our choice of venue and caterer. Our wedding day turned out to be rainy and stormy but as it cleared up in the afternoon, Sam worked with my husband to help us keep the outdoor ceremony we preferred. It was splendid and I was truly in awe when I arrived. His service staff was also excellent. Of course my groom and I were kind of stunned and not paying attention to the timing of things, so server captain Laura gently reminded us to cut cake, start dancing, etc., so we wouldn't fall too far behind. She even helped to keep an eye on my dog who was outside the wedding on the patio. Our families were really impressed by her professional and helpful manner. The servers were also attentive but unobtrusive, quietly keeping things running smoothly. The bar was ready for great service throughout cocktail hour and reception. The food was beautiful and came out at just the right times, and they even saved hors d'oeuvres from the cocktail hour for the busy bridal party! What can I say? Sam and his staff truly catered to the design of what we wanted for our wedding day. We did not hire a wedding planner but thanks to CBD we didn't really need to. This company provided food for my wedding last night. First, I was so impressed with Matt who answered my emails in a timely matter. He truly provided his expertise and advise as I was unsure of quantity of food I should order as well as the overall menu selection. I went with Italian themed menu then added some appetizers that were consistent with that theme. Matt was instrumental in advising me on which appetizers to add and their quantity. My wedding was intimate (40 people) and I did a buffet style catering. Food was absolutely delicious ! Deserts were phenomenal ! I should have listened to Matt when he suggested ordering more deserts. He was right because we ran out of these delicious deserts fast as the kids ate them immediately.
