I ordered 5 dozen each of three items from their drop-off catering menu and I had a great experience from start to finish! The chocolate chip scones, cucumber dill tea sandwiches , and chicken salad tea sandwiches I ordered were a huge hit at my afternoon tea event. The staff were great too, I worked with Jennifer Lucia and the whole process was easy. Their delivery person was also great. I would definitely order from them again. read more

This is in regard to my sister's wedding at The Grove. The food was excellent, hot was hot and cold, cold. The appearance of the buffet was beautiful and the staff was attentive all through the evening. I cannot say enough about the Captain for the evening, Aukse. She went above and beyond the whole evening. While we were bustling the bride, she brought a plate of food up to the bride so she could taste the appetizers and made sure she ate. She checked on everything all evening. I highly recommend this catering company read more

A quickie. My pal's Son got married here and Catered by Design...Catered! Maybe the BEST wedding meal I ever et. Decent Salad, Sirloin Steak, Grilled Asparagus. All top notch and tasty. They weren't skimpy on pouring the decent table Wine, either. Alert and helpful service. There was a fab sweet table, but I was informed C.B.D. wasn't the source. read more

Catered by Design was the absolute best choice we made for our wedding day. It was the #1 recommended catering caterer by our venue, and we were able to request and work with Erin, who knows our venue well. Erin was a dream to work with throughout the whole planning process. She is organized, timely, and creative. She has an amazing attention to detail and had us think of things we never would have thought of without her. Erin made the planning process stress-free for us with all that she handled on her end. We also had a great experience at our tasting at the Morton Grove office last fall (with lots of leftovers to bring home!). Our guests raved about the food, and the night went off without a hitch. The set-up was perfect, and the day-of staff was friendly and executed everything perfectly. We are so glad we chose Catered by Design! read more

We had used Catered by Design for an event in 2024, so it was great to see that they were a preferred vendor at The Women's Club of Evanston where we just held a 50th Anniversary party for the founding of our School. Once again, they hit it out of the park!. We are 4 days past the event and people are still talking about the hors d'oeuvres, dinner, dessert, and the excellent service. Erin was great to work with and Laura our Event Captain was wonderful. I highly recommend them for any type of event. read more

We have nothing but positive things to say about working with Catered by Design for our wedding! Erin was wonderful throughout the whole planning process, and the whole team helped create the perfect catering experience for us. We already knew going in they were amazing, but our guests have been sharing rave reviews on how our wedding food is the best they've ever had! We also used their bartending services, with each drink made perfectly. Highly recommend Catered By Design for any of your catering needs!! read more

Catered by Design catered our 160-guest wedding at the Woman's Club of Evanston, and they were absolutely amazing! We started working originally with Nikee, and later with Jen after she took over Nikee's role for our wedding. Both were stupendous at their job. Nikee was so helpful in setting up the tasting and making suggestions. The tasting itself, in Morton Grove, was such a treat. We enjoyed every bit of it and it really helped us decide what we wanted have for the wedding. Nikee was awesome and took down any modifications we requested for the foods (different dressing, having certain salad toppings on the side, slightly modifying one of the desserts, having different a drink mixer and mint for mojitos, etc) Jen was so great to work with, bringing up things that I never would have thought about, and worked seamlessly (as far as I could tell) with the DJ and venue to make sure everything ran smoothly. Now to the FOOD. The food was so delicious, people were raving about the food during and after the wedding. We had passed appetizers and opted to do the buffet, and they had so much food to go around, and had enough for seconds for the guests that wanted it. I'll post a pic of our menu, we loved ALL of it! I've attached a pic that includes the items we chose for the buffet. For dessert we did the decadent trio for which we chose the key lime tartlet, Carmelita brownies, and cheesecake lollipops. A few notes though, although I guess I should have specified with them directly, there should have been extra favors leftover (we had 200 for 160 guests) and we were unsure what happened to the extras. Our cake baker had also provided us with a box of macarons with a note on top indicating it was for us, and it also may have been cleaned up/tossed by accident at the end of the night. Other than that we were EXTREMELY satisfied, especially our bellies!! I highly recommend Catered by Design for any event! read more

Catered by Design was great from start to finish for our wedding. We went to our tasting and felt very welcomed. We were having a Vietnamese tea ceremony and also wanted to incorporate Mexican culture into our reception. They selected choices that fit the bill! Rachel J was like my wedding coordinator! She provided floor plans, logistics and always answered my "crazed" emails promptly. Everyone loved the food - even the Vietnamese guests who were used to more Asian cuisines. Staff were super during our celebration and the food was delicious. Guests also said it was the best wedding food they've had (don't know if this was an exaggeration but I'm just relaying the message!). Book them now! read more

I was a vendor at an event and happened to be sitting right next to Catered by Design. Lucky for me because I was able to munch on all their delicious food throughout the day, but not so lucky for them because they probably didn't appreciate me chowing on their food all day long...although they couldn't have been nicer about it and kept telling me to eat more (and I'm always game for eating more!). There was a spread of many different things and believe me....I tried it all! My favorites were the sushi (no surprise there being the sushi addict that I am) and pita covered with some delicious spread and artichoke. So good that I just kept snacking on it all day long! The presentation of everything was also beautiful, which I find to be most important when researching good caterers. And the staff couldn't have been friendlier- no raised eyebrows as I kept approaching the food buffet! Overall, very impressed and would definitely call this caterer for any upcoming event needs! Check them out for your needs as well! read more

I have heard about this place many times on next-door, so I decided to go to the market on Saturday morning. Every Saturday during the summer they have a market where you can buy premade food and drinks. I purchased half of focaccia, a huge salmon salad, roasted potatoes and a vegetarian barley and tofu dish. To not have to cook and have quality food is amazing. The entire total was about $40 and the salad was definitely two meals. Everything else was split with my daughter. I will be back again for sure! Just sorry I didn't take any pictures to post. Please support these people whether it's for the market or for a catering event. read more

I have used Catered by Design twice now. The first was for our wedding reception a few years ago. Recently, I had them cater a light luncheon for a funeral. Jen was wonderful to work with and helped me select a simple menu of sandwiches, several salads, a fruit tray, cookies and beverages. It was important to me to serve our guests very good food and Catered by Design doesn't disappoint. In fact, many guests commented on how flavorful the food was. The delivery person came well in advance and set everything up for us. Catered by Design is my go-to caterer for all occasions. Great, professional staff, wonderful menus, and a very affordable price! read more

They catered my daughters wedding this past Sunday. Just a phenomenal experience. Matt guided us through the process and the "day of" staff, cooks, servers and bartender were outstanding. Unbelievably delicious appetizers. Plated dinner served hot and beautifully presented. Everyone cleaned their plates! Filet mignon or barramundi with forbidden rice or eggplant rollatini. All served perfectly. Dessert "sweet table" with coffee service. They even extended the bar service an extra hour at no charge. I've had some horrible catered food at various affairs. This was perfection. Highly recommended for your catered event. Thank you so much for a job very well done. read more

From the first moment we interacted with Catered by Design (CBD) for a tasting event at our venue, The Grove Redfield Estate, we knew this was going to be an amazing experience. Nikee answered several questions that first day we met, but she continued answering any and all questions I had all the way up to the week of our wedding. When we met with Nikee to discuss the vision for our big day, she was patient and her expertise shined through. My fiancé and I went to dinner after our meeting with Nikee, and one thing stood out - Not once did she say 'No' to anything we discussed. We pride ourselves on being simple people, but with a vision in mind, it was great knowing we wouldn't have to alter our expectations. Again, regardless of how much time we had until the wedding, or how silly of a question I thought I was asking, Nikee was exceptionally helpful every step of the way. We picked out our menu far in advance, but after our personal menu tasting we were even more excited for the big day! Not only that, we were excited to blow our friends and family away with the best wedding food they'll ever eat. We received so many compliments on the food and how well executed everything was that day. Fast forward to our wedding day, our catering captain was Aukse and she was just as patient, kind, and professional as everyone else at CBD. Our florist didn't setup our head table vases, but when I asked Aukse if that was something her team could assist with, she made it happen...QUICK. From the time we were introduced that afternoon, in between our first look and bridal party photos, Aukse would ask if there was anything we needed. Aukse and the rest of the team made sure we ate, and ate well, all throughout the night, that the night was beyond flawless, and that above all else we were happy. Dan and I are so thankful for every single thing CBD did to make our wedding day so perfect. If we ever need a caterer in the future, we know who to call. read more

Catered by Design came through for us. The proposal process was very professional, and all communication was timely and responsive. The tasting event was a treat in and of itself, where we were able to pick out our dishes, linens, as well as the dishes. On the big day, Laura made us feel very well taken care of. She was at my side on the day of the event to confirm the timing of everything, and made sure that everything went smoothly. All the servers, and the bartender were friendly, and helpful. The passed hors d'oeuvres were delicious! The drink bar was beautiful with all of the colored carafes, and San Pellegrino. The mushroom bisque, breads, and entrees all exceeded our highest hopes. The Catered by Design team absolutely made our day, working with our photographer, baker, and florist, harmoniously, part of a dream team. Our guests had a wonderful time, all praised the food and service. We wanted to pamper and impress our guests, and Catered by Design certainly did that. read more

Experienced this catering company at a wedding we attended. The passed appetizers were delicious and included: tuna tartare on wonton crisp, bacon wrapped date, veggie eggroll, crab cake, and tomato soup and grilled cheese shooters. My favorite was the crab cake, which was delicious and tasted of real shellfish despite being soft and not crispy on the outside. For the plated meal, the breads came with an assortment of pretzel rolls and white rolls with herbed compound butter. The salad was very fresh with strawberries, goat cheese, red onion, walnuts, and spring mix. The maple salmon with orzo and balsamic veggie kabobs were good, but the standout option was the medium rare steak medallion- tender, Smoky, with a rich reduction and mashed potatoes as well as tender greens. Dessert was a mini sampler plate of various things and was good too. My one complaint was that they didn't serve everyone the wedding cake-- it took them an hour to cut it and not every table received it. read more

Rachel and the entire Catered By Design team were absolutely fantastic throughout every phase of the wedding planning process. We couldn't believe how delicious the food was at our tasting, and every guest we've heard from felt the same way about the food at the wedding. Moreover, Rachel and her team were unbelievably flexible - they made so many adaptations to accommodate our needs and desires, big and small, even adding custom dishes that weren't on their already-exhaustive menus. Everything was delicious, incredibly professional, and done with love! And the service and timing on the wedding day was impeccable, leading to the smoothest possible evening, with every guest well-fed and cared for, properly fueled for the dance floor! And on top of everything else, they were definitely more reasonably priced than other caterers of the same caliber. Can't recommend highly enough. read more

We hired Catered by Design for our wedding reception at the Grove Redfield Estate, and it was one of the best decisions we made in the planning process. Matt and his team are incredible. Matt helped us build a menu tailored to our tastes and atmosphere. His experience was invaluable, as he made key suggestions related to place settings, linens, bar orders, etc. He made sure that our extra furniture rentals fit within our budget, even if it meant Catered by Design had to store the chairs for a few extra days. Matt was highly responsive to all our emails and phone calls, right down to the simplest questions. We left the tasting with full confidence that the food would be delicious and that Matt would ensure that the event ran smoothly. On the day of the wedding, the reception team was led by Laura, who was amazing. Her team was prompt, efficient, and polite. They set up our reception space exactly as we had described, and made last-minute adjustments that didn't detract from our vibe. Laura herself served us at our sweetheart table, and she was perceptive enough to pack our meals for us when she saw that we wouldn't have time to finish our food at the table. All of our guests raved about the food, saying they were happy it wasn't "just a typical wedding meal." From the service to the setup to the food itself, Catered by Design is a team of ultimate professionals. You won't go wrong in choosing them for your event. read more

People keep telling us how perfect our wedding was, and I absolutely credit that to our beautiful venue (the Arches Garden at the Winnetka Community House) and amazing food by Catered by Design, their exclusive caterer. Nikee and Mallory from Catered by Design were amazing to work with, and they helped plan a classy and abundant spread as well as giving guidance on venue layouts and decorations. I loved that based on their experience with this venue, they were able to help us avoid spending money on unnecessary decor. These ladies are so much fun to work with, and they will always give you their honest opinion. And you should listen to them!! They know what they're talking about. And if you're like us and want to gamble on the weather in order to have a fully outdoors wedding, they are on your side and will keep their fingers crossed for no rain. The food was absolutely amazing and an incredible value for our money. The hors d'oeuvres were my favorite, and anyone who talked to me at the cocktail reception can attest that 9 out of 10 times, I had a shrimp toast or a salmon rosette in my mouth. I was grabbing those things like there was no tomorrow. :) The charcuterie display was beautiful and seemed to be bottomless. The pacing of dinner service was perfect, with no awkward delays. Very efficient, but not rushed. I HIGHLY recommend Catered by Design. While they are the exclusive caterer of the Winnetka Community House, they also do events all over the Chicago area, and I would have chosen them no matter what. read more

Worked with Nikee and the catered by design crew for our wedding this summer and were genuinely happy with the experience. Nikee was always there to answer all of our questions and walk us through the process while planning our wedding. Very friendly and professional. We just can't say enough about what a wonderful team Catered BY Design is - they totally delivered an unforgettable, wonderful experience! We held a 60th birthday party at our home, and from a to z they were super to work with - patient, helpful, open to discussing our different ideas, and finding solutions that worked for us both. Catered by design exceeded my expectations once again! They did my wedding in 2014 and did a wonderful job, so I used them for a small retirement party I threw for my mom last weekend. He pulled a menu and quote together for me within days and even switched the day last minute due to the weather. The chef, captain and bartender were great and I didn't have to lift a finger during the party or worry about food and serving cake! We hired Catered by Design for our wedding in September and they were absolutely fantastic! Everything clicked from the moment we booked them. Their service, food and presentation was impeccable. For our tasting, we had a wide variety of options to choose from. Everything was delicious and they even let us take our left over food home with us. We really enjoyed that our menu for the reception could be so unique. When it came time to our wedding day, we were so touched that they prepared a special plate of appetizers and drinks for us after the ceremony was concluded. It really helped us eat before we had to mingle with all of our guests. The champagne tree was a hit, and we had several guests tell us how beautiful and unique it was! Our meal started off with a Brussel sprout salad accompanied with a delicious bread basket. Then, there was a choice of either a chicken with black rice timbale and veggie skewer, salmon with lemon orzo, or vegan veggie stack. It was so hard for us to decide which one we had wanted because everything tasted amazing. We loved our desserts as there were several options of mini shooters and chocolates. Overall, the food tasted just as good at the wedding as it did at our tasting! We were delighted that we got to take food home with us after the wedding to continue the excitement of the day. If we had to do it again, we would pick Catered by Design in a heart beat! We are definitely using them again in the future. read more

My husband and I worked with Sam for our December wedding, and we made a pretty fab choice. The two biggest strengths were the food (options and quality) and Sam's flexibility and service orientation. First, we had to narrow down the huge array of choices into a menu that would suit ourselves and our guests. I do not eat most meats; my husband does. My family includes vegetarians, and there were a handful of other restricted diets among our guests. We decided on three entree choices to satisfy everyone, and they actually did. People who didn't have anything to gain by lying to me told me how much they liked their dinners. Excellent! Back to the vegetarians for a minute. First, my husband and I tasted a vegetarian pasta option but we were underwhelmed, so Sam presented an alternative they hadn't officially added to their offerings yet: a vegan polenta with grilled vegetables in a stack. Both of us tried it and both of us loved it. It went over very well with our vegetarian guests as well, both because it wasn't pasta and because it was tasty, healthy and filling. As for Sam, he accommodated us further on the dessert front. My husband is a whoopie pie aficionado and since whoopie pies were not among Sam's dessert options, he allowed for us to provide our own to be set out along the other sweets. (At this time allow me to shout out to Rise n' Roll for providing the 6 dozen whoopie pies and delighting my husband possibly more than I do.) Then, he saved the day when our cake baker went out of business, 7 days before our wedding, with absolutely no warning. (At this time allow me to shout AT Rolf's Patisserie: Who does that?!?!) We had a relatively simple design, so luckily Sam was able to arrange a cake to be made by another bakery he works with. If Sam was panicked, I didn't feel it. I just knew he was going to get it done and I didn't need to worry about it. If there's an area for improvement, it is the day-of communication and game plan. I met our captain and had to go over a couple details during cocktails, which means I wasn't with our guests. And afterwards, the catering staff cleaned up the table decorations (candles in votives) by throwing most of them out, until I think the site manager noticed and asked them to save them. Overall though, the most important aspects of catering were handled very well and we would choose Sam again if we were to have another wedding (which we totally should - it was awesome!). read more

Definitely a stellar, professional place. I had met with Sam, the owner, after tasting his food at a Yelp event. Sam was personable, gregarious and very informative. Andy M and I went to a tasting where we were given a generous helping of each item we were interested in, plus a dessert which was delicious and a complete surprise. Unfortunately we had to make a tough decision because it came down to a tie between them and another caterer and the other caterer won out - but literally by a centimeter. If I am in the market for a caterer in the future I would not hesitate to hire this company. read more

We used Catered by Design for a party at our home in June 2014. It could not have been more perfect. Planning our small party was easy with the help of Sam Gray and his son, Matthew. They guided us through the huge selection of food, quantities and timing. A staff of two prepared and served hot appetizers and desserts for our 50 guests. Having appetizers passed among guests was new for us but turned out to be the perfect choice. There was a constant flow of varied appetizers and they were all hits. Catered by Design also set up an eye-popping display of food on our dining room table. Some of the food, like small sandwiches, was from them and some of it was brought by guests. They also made sure empty plates and bottles were quickly snapped up and disposed of. We depended on Catered by Design, not only for food, but for the glassware we used for wine and for a champagne toast. They also provided a few highboy tables for guests to gather around on our deck. Our server expertly dressed them up with blue linen and yellow sashes. Catered by Design has provided food for our parties before but we always arranged to just have it dropped off. Using their friendly and extremely competent staff, for this party, allowed us to enjoy more time with our guests. Isn't that what it's all about? read more

My husband and I used Catered by Design for our 7/24/10 wedding at the Woman's Club of Evanston. We worked with the owner, Sam, up until the week before the wedding, and then finished up with Bonnie. From the start, they were great to work with. Sam spent a ton of time with us working out the details of our weddings, and showing us examples of floor plans. You can tell that he is proud of his business and strives to keep his clients happy. The private tasting that we had(myself, my husband, and both sets of parents) was incredible. The chef even came out and talked to us personally, and they made some adjustments to the menu (the beef dish we chose typically comes with a sauce over the top, but we had them put it in bowls on the table, so that people could choose if they wanted to use it). I have very severe food allergies, and as such, my food had to be cooked separately from that of our wedding guests. CBD was very accommodating, and I felt very comfortable eating the food they provided me with at the reception. Our captain was Naty, and she was great. I didn't meet her until the reception, and she was warm, yet professional, and it was obvious that she takes her job seriously. We didn't have a single problem that I was aware of, which tells me that she just handled everything. Everyone raved about our food, and they made the wedding planning very easy on me, so I definitely recommend this company! read more

My husband and I just got married at the Winnetka Community House and Catered by Designs is the one that plans all the events at this space. We met with Karen who was a great listener and helped us design the kind of reception would we would like and the wedding ended up being beautiful! A few helpful notes: 1. The Captain for our event, Barb, was fantastic. She took care of everything! When the cake didn't arrive, she called. When the flowers on the table looked funny, she helped. She was also super-attentive to me: making sure my new husband and I had some of the appetizers from the cocktail hour at our place setting since we had been taking pictures. 2. Karen was very helpful during the event. When there needed to be last minute changes, they were made flawlessly. 3. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. 4. You only get the space for 5 hours, after that you have to pay extra. 5. The contract you sign with your initial deposit is the same for everyone. So throughout the next several months I emailed Karen about some changes I wanted to make and since there wasn't a real contract for our event yet, it ended up that some of these things were forgotten (by me and her) when the final contract was drawn up. So changes were made the day of. 6. The contract includes a cake from Rolf's Pasterisse. Even though we had a separate contract from Rolf's and it was faxed to Karen, we almost didn't have a cake! It didn't show up until after the ceremony had already begun. My advice: Try to negotiate OUT the cake and find a bakery elsewhere. It would not have been fun to not have a cake. Every wedding has a few hiccups, but I was glad to have Karen, Barb, and the rest of her team planning and caterering my wedding. The wedding was fantastic and stress-free for me (I had two friends in charge of everything the day as semi-wedding planners and Karen and Barb worked with my friends fantastically.) I definitely recommend them for your wedding as long as you stay semi-flexible, keep a running list of what you have asked for via emails or phone calls, and get the cake out of the contract! read more

Worked with Catered by Design for my daughter's wedding reception (Festive, not fancy!), which was held at Sketchbook Brewery in Skokie (also a fabulous place). The guest list ranged in age from 25-85, and my daughter wanted "grazing" the whole evening (4 hours), as opposed to a sit down or buffet meal. Jennifer was terrific helping us plan a variety of foods that could be staged in shifts as the evening went on. The skewers, sliders and salads we served during the dinner-ish section were delicious. Despite the fact that this section of service didn't start until an hour and a half into the event, they were hot, juicy and flavorful. All the guests raved about the food. Wes was our service captain, and he did an excellent job setting everything up, keeping trays & warmers stocked and cleaning and packing everything at the end, leaving us free to enjoy the evening. Great quality, great service and reasonable prices - what more could you want! read more
