If you're looking for world-class food and awesome service... I'd recommend eating elsewhere. It's not that Rich Table is bad, but it's just not worth the price point or hype IMO.
I was so excited to try this restaurant after rave reviews from friends and Yelpers, but my experience was lackluster. My friend and I love to try new restaurants when we're traveling together, and we both agree that there were way better restaurants to try in SF for good food, and this restaurant could only really be deserving of their Michelin star for the quality of the ingredients, which feels like a low bar at this price point. We had the tasting menu 'chef's pick,' and here are my thoughts:
Highlights: cocktails and desserts
Lowlights: service, value for $$, balance of flavor combos/profiles
COCKTAILS - All of the cocktails were excellent. I would venture to say that this place has some of the best cocktails I've ever had. I especially loved the milk-wash cocktails and would recommend trying any of them. If you haven't had milk wash drinks before, just know that they're not actually milky. The drinks have just gone through a process that gives the drink a bit more body, but I'd just recommend going in on one. Who doesn't want an amazing, balanced drink?! Would also recommend the shiso gimlet if you're not into the former.
DESSERTS - In my opinion, the desserts nailed it. They were creative, not too sweet, balanced in flavors/textures, and they were unique to what you'd find on an average menu.
APPS - These are 'bites' on the menu but came in a sampler platter for us. Overall, 4/5- this course had some highlights for us, but some of the hyped items were not that good to me.
Beef dumplings (3/5) - we were told that these are a must have. If you've had good dumplings with laoganma or fly by jing chili crisp, you've probably had better dumplings than these. At $10 for 2 dumplings, I'd say save your money for a dank SF dumpling spot (there's one down the street).
Sardine chip (4/5) - love the creamy contrast to the crisp chip but not enough of a contrast to the sardine = a tiny bit too salty (I'm being a little critical here).
Porcini doughnuts (3/5) - have you ever been to a cheap Chinese buffet in the Midwest and seen biscuit dough deep fried and rolled in granulated sugar? This is a twist on that, but it's not as good as the OG. Maybe we're supposed to oooo at the umami mushroom infusion, but I'd say these were a little denser and drier than your buffet doughnut. Not to be the thief of joy, but those doughnuts can be made in your home en masse for a few dollars.
Panna cotta (5/5) - they gave this to us as a starter topped with passion fruit and it was honestly magical. You could taste the high quality, nutty olive oil, which was a great flavor addition to a creamy dessert with an acidic, fruity contrast. This was foreshadowing for our future dessert courses.
MAINS - Disappointing after a hopeful appetizer/drink round.
Albacore Tostada (2/5) - I appreciate what they were trying to do here, but after eating fresh fish all week, this fish tasted a day old and the flavor profile was a bit repeatable. If you've had a tuna tostada with some cilantro cream and some sort of sweet, mild fruit flavor, you've probably tried something similar at a lower price point.
Burrata (3/5) - bread and burrata were great, as one would expect them to be at a restaurant of this caliber. The dragon tongue beans are good, but they don't add much flavor or excitement. TBH, chewing into them became a bit tedious, and I felt like they were really there for textural value, but I was looking for a little more of a unique flavor profile... anything to make this more... special.
Sea urchin tonnarelli (4/5) - worth ordering, but don't expect this dish to blow your mind. You can taste the faint flavor of uni and feel a little more creaminess and umami flavor than your average cacio e Pepe, but if this is the menu's starred/hyped item, I'd say we're not focusing on the standout items.
Rib eye (4/5) - quality and preparation of beef was perfect, but the preparation was just fine. Nothing wowed me, but I'd definitely order the steak if I were to come back again.
In summary, come here if you have $$ to spend on innovative cooking, but don't expect this to be an amazing, wow moment if you're a foodie. read more
