Spicy Salmon Onigiri and Spicy KBBQ Beef Onigiri

Stopped by for lunch today and unfortunately left hungry with how bad this was. Ricebunn is located in the back corner of Trade Food Hall. Unfortunately the whole area is looking a bit run down, especially for being in Irvine. There wasn't anyone working the front so I used the digital ordering system they had set up. I ordered the Spicy KBBQ Beef Onigiri and the Spicy Salmon Onigiri and both were terrible. The quality of the fish and beef was subpar at best, and they were both very bland and gamey. Everything tasted like it'd been sitting in a fridge or freezer for an extended period of time and was thrown into a microwave before being served. I took one bite of each and unfortunately had to throw them away. There are so many better options for Onigiri out there, so please visit those locations and avoid this place, it's simply not worth it.

Rice Bunn is tucked into a small shopping plaza in Irvine and is such a great find. They have a cute outdoor seating area, which is perfect when the weather is nice. This spot gets very busy around lunchtime, so I highly recommend ordering ahead if you're in a rush. Every time I'm in the area, I stop by and order the quad, and it is absolutely worth it. Each bun is flavorful, fresh, and so satisfying. Honestly, you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. On top of the great food, the staff is always friendly and efficient, even during peak hours. This is a go-to lunch spot for me, and I'd definitely recommend it if you're nearby.

Was hungry and craving something small but not a "snack", yet not a full meal either as I had dinner plans soon. I was in the area and decided to stop by here for a quick bite. It's located inside the Trade Food Hall. Parking here during lunch is a hot mess because it's in the Irvine Business District, so all of the workers in the area come here for lunch and it can get crowded. But during off hours and dinner it's not too bad - just something to keep in mind. Because it's a food hall, its community open seating and no designated seating for each restaurant, you just order your food and then take a seat somewhere in the open space hall. It's basically self-service as you order at the kiosk and not with an actual person. I decided to go with their trio of onigiri for $12, ended up being about $14-$15 after tax. I got the spicy tuna mayo, crab, and kbbq beef. Each onigiri was a hearty size and good value for about $4 each. They fell apart easily and were pretty messy though so I recommend having a fork and napkin ready. Overall it was a good light bite option, and I don't have any complaints.

Was pleasantly surprised how delicious these little pillows of yumminess were! :D Both the Korean BBQ and salmon onigiris were super tasty and full of filling, both on the inside and the top. The Korean BBQ didn't taste like authentic bbq flavor, but it was still savory and delightful. The salmon was not dry (yay!) and was also went very well with the rice. Overall, they were both soft and didn't have any crunch, in case you were looking for that. The dining area is shaded but not totally covered (don't plan to eat here on rainy days). Service was super friendly too. They make massive rice plates (basically a plate form of their rice balls to eat with utensils). I would totally come back to grab some more rice ball onigiris-- check them out!

I loved this place when it first opened, but the quality has gone downhill. My go-to onigiris were salmon, tuna, shrimp, and bulgogi. The bulgogi used to be great, but after they changed the preparation it now tastes more like carne asada. The salmon, tuna, and rice also used to be consistently fresh, no matter the time of day, but quality noticeably drops in the evenings now. Portions used to be generous, but they've shrunk to match competitors like Tenori, which makes the prices feel unjustified. When I called to complain, there was no apology or accountability. I even stopped by the same week to speak with a main employee, who was defensive instead of receptive. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place for onigiri anymore.

Perfectly handmade Onigiri at affordable price. There is conveniently self service kiosk to order. Rice was warm and makes the taste nicer for some reason. Topping is abundant, though a lil bit salty to my opinion. Located in the chick food court. Def highly recommended!

We tried this today and it was pretty decent. The salmon onigiri was our favorite with the others just being ok. The bulgogi onigiri was sweet, but tasted like a store bought marinade. The construction of the onigiris were solid and everything else about them. The flavors could use some work, especially the shrimp onigiri as it was heavily mayonnaised. Service was great and the gentleman behind the counter was pleasant. We'd come back here and order 3-4 of the salmon ones and it would be a 5 star lunch.

It was good tasting, but I was blind sided. At first, it was easy, you order at the Kiosk and while you wait for your order, you can check out the other eateries to see if there's something else you can try. My gripe was that we got bait and switched with "crab" onigiri for $4.99. The photo showed real crab, and then we got imitation crab which is nothing like the photo. It was good, but makes me wonder if the other options were also imitation... Probably won't be back anytime soon.

The onigiri is good especially the crab one! I wasn't the biggest fan of the veggie one because it tasted sweet but the rest were really good! The only thing is it did take a while to get our food but we did order a couple of things! The area there is a cute as there is multiple small restaurants in one area so you get to try multiple things at once!

I am from San Diego and I will say that we don't have many places like this so when I found this late night snack, it was more than a hidden gem. People in Irvine you don't know how good you have it with your Asian food and your late night open dinner places. Ricebunn is located in a food court with many other good eats, but what caught my attention was the various types of rice and protein that you could have. There was a reminiscent flavor of Japan that you could taste from the food. It was not as good as Japan, but I will say that it hit the spot for a late night snack. I couldn't believe the hours and you could see that they were open late. Glad I found this place and it is worth a visit if you are nearby.

My brother came to this stand to buy a soda and the employee/owner charged him $1 service fee and 0.25 cents convince fee to buy a soda, didn't give him a warning about the service fee. We're confused on what the service charge is for? Unless the owner thinks that he can charge a $1 to just grab a soda for him. The service charge is understandable. But I would go to any stand next-door to buy a drink.

I really love this place. It's great for a quick snack or lunch. I've been a few times every time the owner is just absolutely wonderful so helpful. The food is fresh. It taste amazing. I've been to Japan many times and I would have to say that this is definitely comparable!! Highly recommend. this time he gave me some snacks for my dog, very generous!

I came here after picking up some friends from the airport that is close by. This place is open 24/7 so we came kinda late at night. It was not very busy since it was so late. We ordered on the kiosk. I got mine to-go and took some home for my boyfriend. I ordered the Triple with KBBQ, Crab and Tuna Mayo. The rice balls were pretty big and topped with extra ingredients. It was pretty messy to eat. I ate the tuna mayo and crab there and saved the kbbq for later. The tuna mayo was alright, it was pretty plain, but I did like the seasonings in the rice. The kbbq was ok, the meat was on the dry side. The crab was my favorite, super creamy and delicious. My friends enjoyed their rice balls. I did like that this place was open late, but we did have to wait a while for our food as there was only one guy in the kitchen. I feel like as far as onigiri goes, there are better places to get some in the area, but we mostly just came here for convenience and I wanted to try it out.

UH HELLO?????? This is the BEST onigiri I have ever had in my dang life. I ordered the spicy salmon, regular salmon, spicy crab, and tuna mayo. The only one I didn't really *love* was tuna mayo but that's bc my tastebuds have failed me. The service was fast and they answered all of my questions without fail and also just in general. The wait took maybe???? 5-7 minutes???? They made it there and it was so warm and delicious and I am crying because I wish I could eat 10 in one sitting. This photo does not do the food justice. I think this place is overhyped. Was excited to try this place and my onigiri looked pretty sad. I knew they wouldn't have a lot of filling but the onigiri wasn't as amazing as everyone made it out to be. I say, this is a good worktime lunch, however. If I wanted something quick and reasonably near work, this would be it. read more

I was craving something quick after work. Considering they sell onigiris, I wasn't expecting them to be $5 each. You can get these at Asian grocery stores for cheaper and taste the same. I also tried their corn. I thought that was too expensive for a small cup. read more

Overall good but not great. I got my order to go via doordash. Tried the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, spicy crab and shrimp. For the price I think they're kinda small and they didn't really taste anything special to me. The rice was well made but maybe I just prefer my onigiri to be more firm? Maybe it was the doordash? Idk lol. My favorite was the shrimp though, that one tasted really nice. I love onigiri but I personally wouldn't put this on my regular rotation of foods. read more

Best onigiris I've ever tried and I've been to Japan! Omg I had such mediocre expectations for this and honestly I was blown away! The cashier was super friendly and attentive when I was asking questions~ He was super polite even when my dog was barking lol. I got the 4 piece one and I was taken to an onigiri planet~ Everything was hot and piping and my only complaint was that I wish I ordered more! I got the kbbq, shrimp, salmon (spicy), and tuna! All were so scrumptious and appealed to my taste buds! The cashier asked if I wanted it spicy and tbh I didn't know what that entailed but just did it anyway because he said it would be good! And it did not disappoint!! The salmon one was actually my favorite one, I think their spice was like a sambal of sorts and it was so delicious! The tuna one is tuna and Mayo and furikake, but it was stuffed to the brim! Actually all of them were overflowing~ The kbbq one was a mouthwatering surprise and really packed with meat! The shrimp one my dad had tried it because I'm allergic and even though he had it a couple of hours later he said it was really good! I came in on a Saturday evening around 6 and it wasn't too busy and plenty of parking! I would've stayed to sit outside but there weren't enough heaters but it is what it is. Honestly highly recommend and I'm definitely coming back again~ read more

This ... isn't great. Like many others, we stopped by because of the great reviews on Yelp. The rice was undercooked, unseasoned, and not sticky, which made the rice ball fall apart the moment you picked it up. We got the kbbq, spicy salmon, and crab onigiri. All tasted like we had leftovers and decided to make rice balls with normal unseasoned jasmine rice. Rice balls that you get from Mitsuwa are 3x better and half the price. read more

My stars are moreso for the service and their set up than the food. I was craving onigiri so stopped by here. I ordered the quarter which on their board says it's $15.50. I get my bill and it's $18. I'm like okay tax. Oh wait they charged me .50 for kbbq and for salmon, but I don't see anything on their menu that says some proteins have an upcharge. So I ask and the server points to the revolving screen behind him and I'm literally size 9 font at the very bottom with a darker brown background, it says "KBBQ is .50 more". Now here's the thing, I have no issue with paying an upcharge IF you're upfront about it. There are literally paper menus, a paper sign and the huge revolving screen in mostly white that doesn't say anything about it. It's just tricky marketing to put the upcharge words in tiny font and on a darker background so it's harder to see. Then after I sit down I'm like wait a minute, it doesn't say salmon is an upcharge. So I go ask and the server isn't sure what to do. I know .50 is a small amount, but at this point it's the principle of the matter. He ended up refunding myself and my friend for our salmon charge, but it's like come on guys let's get your act together. I wonder how many folks they have been up charging incorrectly and getting away with it. Anyways we got our food and the salmon and kbbq were good. Shrimp was not my favorite. We didn't love the rice because it was crumbly and not as well packed as tendori in Rodeo 39 so eating was quite messy. I had high hopes, but probably won't be back. read more

Really like their trio so you can try different options! Their tuna mayo and salmon were really good, skip the kbbq beef! I came back the next day and my bf tried the vegan one and thought it was great except that they include raisins that don't taste like raisins and it wasn't specified in the menu. He was asked if he wanted it spicy whereas I did not so that was a little discrepancy between cashiers. Great to try with the Yelp check in read more

I got the original trio from rice bunn. I got one kbbq beef, one salmon and one tuna mayo. They asked if I wanted any of them spicy and I picked the salmon one. Turns out spicy is just putting sambal on top of the topping. $12 for the trio and extra .50 for the kbbq read more

Back after a long time. Food's still very good and super dooper friendly service as always. They're carrying the new Kokonut desserts now the cashier almost convinced me to get it but i'll defo be back for the coffee pudding. I live in Pomona so I made a trip to Irvine to eat here and it was so worth it. Best rice balls I've had in the US so far. Great price, amazing taste. Best believe any time I'm nearby I will go out of my way for this. Wish they had a location closer to me, if they did I'd be there constantly. read more

We went this place again last weekend and Since it passed almost a year from my last review i wanted give you another 5 star because they have STILL the best Onigiris in OC! I the service is still very good. They were quick and very friendly. And i love that they add the truffle corn to their menu. The chocolate almond macaron ice cream is still is my favorite and that KBBQ onigiri is to die for! Thank you AGAIN! read more

Went to this place on a Monday night with a friend. Food didn't take too long, but it unfortunately was not what I was hoping for. Both the tuna and salmon were really fishy. I know canned fish often are, but these two were even passed that level in terms of taste and smell. Unfortunately I felt pretty sick all night, and I'm fairly sure it was because of those. The KBBQ one was pretty good though, so I'd recommend only getting that one--the beef was really flavorful. read more

ordered via ubereats! food is very filling and they're generous with their portions too! the containers for the sides were packed :D my complete order: - onigiri trio (salmon, spicy salmon, and tuna mayo): personally thought the ratio was pretty good although more filling wouldn't hurt. the rice was soft and perfectly warm + the fillings were all so good!! my personal favorite was the salmon (i didn't enjoy the tuna mayo as much since it didn't have as much flavor as the others but it's still a pretty solid classic) - miso corn: not too salty! - japanese cucumber salad: absolutely love this! not too sour and not too salty either. do have to be careful bc there is liquid in the container too tho! read more

They make their onigiri fresh so the quality of rice is excellent and makes a big difference. I think it's way better than grabbing onigiri at the local Japanese supermarket. I really enjoyed the salmon and shrimp ones. Will be coming back! read more

Went here to try the onigiri. The service was nice, it did take a while to get to order but nothing serious. I got the Crab spicy, Tuna spicy, and shrimp mild. The crab one was good, it wasn't very spicy but it tasted decent. The tuna one kind of lacked flavor. When i got tuna mayo spicy i expected it to be more spicy and have seasonings mixed in so it can have a nice taste, it really just tasted like canned tuna (I did order tuna though ‍). The shrimp one i couldn't finish. There was a creamy substance throughout that was extremely salty. It was very overpowering, i tried to kind of pick around it but it was throughout the rice ball. I think it would've tasted fine without the sauce. Overall, not my preference. There are many good reviews so maybe my order was just botched or my tastebuds are structured differently, but the food I experienced wasn't as good as Ive hoped. read more

it's so rare to find vegan onigiri that isn't just plain and ricebunn's vegan onigiri is delicious! what stood out to me was that it has vegan mayo amongst its toppings which makes the onigiri much tastier. we ordered 3 total onigiri and the vegan one was packaged in a separate takeout box which i appreciated. would definitely come again! read more

I am writing an update very soon after my initial review because I received an email from contact@ricebunn.com, which is the email listed on Ricebunn's website. First of all - how did they get my email address when that info isn't listed publicly on Yelp? My initial thought is they must have seen my review and dug through their orders from yesterday, matched my name with my order info, and contacted me that way. You'll notice that they specify the exact time of my order in the email, too. A big yikes to go through so much trouble when Yelp messaging is a thing, if you ask me. And VERY concerning security-wise, at that. This has to be a breach of privacy, right? Not only did they find my email, but they addressed me by my full name (which is also not visible on Yelp!). They have my phone number too - who's to say they won't try calling people about low reviews next? Do NOT place an order online if you want to open yourself up to an experience like what I had. I don't think the intended use of customer order info is to write a salty email in response to a 3-star review talking about how difficult it was to eat onigiri the right way. I get that Ricebunn is fairly new, but the reality is that not everyone is going to like your food, and you can't make everyone happy. Taking the reviews too personally instead of using them as constructive criticism is a red flag for the ownership. Do they send emails like this to everyone who didn't leave a 5-star review? I was pretty neutral on the taste of the food and my only criticism was the craftsmanship behind the onigiri. I think both those points were pretty clear in my original review. I really wanted to like this place. Being Japanese I know what a good Onigiri taste like and all I tasted was Rice. TOO MUCH RICE! Go to Mistsuwa Marketplace, cook rice and apply the Furikake and you have the same thing. Its $5 each with barely any filling, rice was slight soggy. :( was so hungry I still managed to finish it but I hope adjustments will be made so I can try again. read more

If you're on the go and want to give this place a try, I'd definitely recommend ordering takeout ahead of time like through the Yelp app. Ricebunn prepared my order fairly quickly and before the estimated time that it said it would be completed. I ordered the Onigiri Quartet: Salmon Onigiri Spicy Salmon Onigiri - my favorite one out of the 4 Spicy Tuna Mayo Onigiri KBBQ Beef Onigiri The rice buns were honestly mid and fell apart pretty easily. They also did not have as much filling as I thought they would have had. The meat was flavorful though! read more

You won't find your typical rainbow rolls at this restaurant (I do love a good rainbow roll though). The rolls we ordered were the Snowflake (which was flavored with yuzu), the Lobster roll (which was so much more than a typical baked lobster/langostino roll), and the Are You Kidding Me roll, which was big on truffle flavor and came topped with fried onions. I thoroughly enjoyed the Snowflake roll. It had multiple types of fish inside, and the yuzu flavor added the perfect fresh citrusy touch. It also came dotted with a tiny bit of sriracha (or some other spice) but it was just a hint and it's easy to wipe off if you don't want any spice. The Lobster roll was the star of the show. I give it a 10/10 for presentation, and it was also the best tasting one in my opinion. It was plated with a shelled lobster tail, which looks visually pleasing, but the most impressive part was right before serving, the waitress lit it on fire and handed it to us, as if it were flaming creme brulee or something. The flame actually wasn't on the roll itself, but was on what appeared to be a trail of salt (presumably soaked in some kind of alcohol to make it burn). It definitely was a cool effect and I've never seen anything like it in a sushi restaurant! Lastly, the Are You Kidding Me roll - this was my third favorite out of the three we ordered. It was pretty good but I think the truffle flavor was a bit strong. I'm also personally not a huge fan of fried onions on top of sushi since I think it clashes a bit with the freshness of the fish, and gives me too many bar food vibes. But it certainly was flavorful and my husband and I still finished it. We shared these three sushi rolls between the two of us and it was just the right amount of food to leave feeling full. Stopped by the food court to get some Thai food just to find out it was closed so decided to give this place a shot! Really wasn't expecting much protein in the onigiris and thought they would be skimpy but man it was not only filled but they put it on the top too.
