Spicy Salmon Onigiri and Spicy KBBQ Beef Onigiri

Stopped by for lunch today and unfortunately left hungry with how bad this was. Ricebunn is located in the back corner of Trade Food Hall. Unfortunately the whole area is looking a bit run down, especially for being in Irvine. There wasn't anyone working the front so I used the digital ordering system they had set up. I ordered the Spicy KBBQ Beef Onigiri and the Spicy Salmon Onigiri and both were terrible. The quality of the fish and beef was subpar at best, and they were both very bland and gamey. Everything tasted like it'd been sitting in a fridge or freezer for an extended period of time and was thrown into a microwave before being served. I took one bite of each and unfortunately had to throw them away. There are so many better options for Onigiri out there, so please visit those locations and avoid this place, it's simply not worth it.

Rice Bunn is tucked into a small shopping plaza in Irvine and is such a great find. They have a cute outdoor seating area, which is perfect when the weather is nice. This spot gets very busy around lunchtime, so I highly recommend ordering ahead if you're in a rush. Every time I'm in the area, I stop by and order the quad, and it is absolutely worth it. Each bun is flavorful, fresh, and so satisfying. Honestly, you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. On top of the great food, the staff is always friendly and efficient, even during peak hours. This is a go-to lunch spot for me, and I'd definitely recommend it if you're nearby.

Was hungry and craving something small but not a "snack", yet not a full meal either as I had dinner plans soon. I was in the area and decided to stop by here for a quick bite. It's located inside the Trade Food Hall. Parking here during lunch is a hot mess because it's in the Irvine Business District, so all of the workers in the area come here for lunch and it can get crowded. But during off hours and dinner it's not too bad - just something to keep in mind. Because it's a food hall, its community open seating and no designated seating for each restaurant, you just order your food and then take a seat somewhere in the open space hall. It's basically self-service as you order at the kiosk and not with an actual person. I decided to go with their trio of onigiri for $12, ended up being about $14-$15 after tax. I got the spicy tuna mayo, crab, and kbbq beef. Each onigiri was a hearty size and good value for about $4 each. They fell apart easily and were pretty messy though so I recommend having a fork and napkin ready. Overall it was a good light bite option, and I don't have any complaints.

Was pleasantly surprised how delicious these little pillows of yumminess were! :D Both the Korean BBQ and salmon onigiris were super tasty and full of filling, both on the inside and the top. The Korean BBQ didn't taste like authentic bbq flavor, but it was still savory and delightful. The salmon was not dry (yay!) and was also went very well with the rice. Overall, they were both soft and didn't have any crunch, in case you were looking for that. The dining area is shaded but not totally covered (don't plan to eat here on rainy days). Service was super friendly too. They make massive rice plates (basically a plate form of their rice balls to eat with utensils). I would totally come back to grab some more rice ball onigiris-- check them out!

I loved this place when it first opened, but the quality has gone downhill. My go-to onigiris were salmon, tuna, shrimp, and bulgogi. The bulgogi used to be great, but after they changed the preparation it now tastes more like carne asada. The salmon, tuna, and rice also used to be consistently fresh, no matter the time of day, but quality noticeably drops in the evenings now. Portions used to be generous, but they've shrunk to match competitors like Tenori, which makes the prices feel unjustified. When I called to complain, there was no apology or accountability. I even stopped by the same week to speak with a main employee, who was defensive instead of receptive. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place for onigiri anymore.

Perfectly handmade Onigiri at affordable price. There is conveniently self service kiosk to order. Rice was warm and makes the taste nicer for some reason. Topping is abundant, though a lil bit salty to my opinion. Located in the chick food court. Def highly recommended!

We tried this today and it was pretty decent. The salmon onigiri was our favorite with the others just being ok. The bulgogi onigiri was sweet, but tasted like a store bought marinade. The construction of the onigiris were solid and everything else about them. The flavors could use some work, especially the shrimp onigiri as it was heavily mayonnaised. Service was great and the gentleman behind the counter was pleasant. We'd come back here and order 3-4 of the salmon ones and it would be a 5 star lunch.

It was good tasting, but I was blind sided. At first, it was easy, you order at the Kiosk and while you wait for your order, you can check out the other eateries to see if there's something else you can try. My gripe was that we got bait and switched with "crab" onigiri for $4.99. The photo showed real crab, and then we got imitation crab which is nothing like the photo. It was good, but makes me wonder if the other options were also imitation... Probably won't be back anytime soon.

The onigiri is good especially the crab one! I wasn't the biggest fan of the veggie one because it tasted sweet but the rest were really good! The only thing is it did take a while to get our food but we did order a couple of things! The area there is a cute as there is multiple small restaurants in one area so you get to try multiple things at once!

I am from San Diego and I will say that we don't have many places like this so when I found this late night snack, it was more than a hidden gem. People in Irvine you don't know how good you have it with your Asian food and your late night open dinner places. Ricebunn is located in a food court with many other good eats, but what caught my attention was the various types of rice and protein that you could have. There was a reminiscent flavor of Japan that you could taste from the food. It was not as good as Japan, but I will say that it hit the spot for a late night snack. I couldn't believe the hours and you could see that they were open late. Glad I found this place and it is worth a visit if you are nearby.

My brother came to this stand to buy a soda and the employee/owner charged him $1 service fee and 0.25 cents convince fee to buy a soda, didn't give him a warning about the service fee. We're confused on what the service charge is for? Unless the owner thinks that he can charge a $1 to just grab a soda for him. The service charge is understandable. But I would go to any stand next-door to buy a drink.

I really love this place. It's great for a quick snack or lunch. I've been a few times every time the owner is just absolutely wonderful so helpful. The food is fresh. It taste amazing. I've been to Japan many times and I would have to say that this is definitely comparable!! Highly recommend. this time he gave me some snacks for my dog, very generous!

I came here after picking up some friends from the airport that is close by. This place is open 24/7 so we came kinda late at night. It was not very busy since it was so late. We ordered on the kiosk. I got mine to-go and took some home for my boyfriend. I ordered the Triple with KBBQ, Crab and Tuna Mayo. The rice balls were pretty big and topped with extra ingredients. It was pretty messy to eat. I ate the tuna mayo and crab there and saved the kbbq for later. The tuna mayo was alright, it was pretty plain, but I did like the seasonings in the rice. The kbbq was ok, the meat was on the dry side. The crab was my favorite, super creamy and delicious. My friends enjoyed their rice balls. I did like that this place was open late, but we did have to wait a while for our food as there was only one guy in the kitchen. I feel like as far as onigiri goes, there are better places to get some in the area, but we mostly just came here for convenience and I wanted to try it out.

I went here because my flight was canceled and it's 24 hours /walkable + it had so many positive reviews The truffle corn was extremely salty (even mixing with rice did not help) and the onigiri was mid compared to Mitsuwa's onigiri I don't think there is enough of a draw to come back here, but the service was good at least read more

It's a small, simple place with a big flavor punch! Delicious Onigiri! We ordered the Onigiri Quartet + 1. 2 Salmon, 1 Tuna, 1 Shrimp, 1 Crab. Japanese Cucumber salad is yummy too. I was having a specific craving for onigiri, so I thought I would check out Ricebunn, which I found through Yelp. I felt like it was a little pricy ($4.50-5 for one piece), so if you order from here, it's a better deal for you to order a trio or quartet. I'm not a big seafood fan, so I decided to try out the KBBQ beef and the Vegan onigiri. The flavor of the KBBQ beef was delicious, super savory, and the meat wasn't too chewy or dry-- I would definitely eat this again. I wasn't sure what to expect from the Vegan onigiri, but I'm not mad at it. It was very creamy and had good flavor, but was a little salty for me. It's nice to see restaurants with small menus still try to accommodate for different dietary preferences. If you're used to eating a heavy meal, this is definitely more of an appetizer or snack, but for those looking for a light entree, this might be a good option for you! read more

Upon taking all the other reviews, I decided to hit this place up after the lunch rush, so I went at 230pm on a Friday day. So the venue has plenty of seating, BUT the parking does get pretty crowded and small compact cars. PLAN your trip according if you're in a rush. The restaurant is an outdoor food court, warm if it's summer. Again, dress according and be prepared to wait in the sun. The service was super quick. I already knew what I wanted, ordered, and paid with my arm, and YELPERS get 10%for checking in! Take advantage of getting the sauce on the side. I'm not a spice girl, so glas John shared with me I could add on side vs on top of my meal. GREAT relief!! I definitely recommend the TRIO. The drink I'm not a fan I will return to try other items. Overall, good food for a nominal fee. read more

I wanted to try their onigiri, and I was not disappointed. I had ordered 8 different flavors to try out. They're rather large, so 1 or 2 is quite filling. The amount of rice used is just right with adequate filling. You don't necessarily need any sauce, as the seasoning on the rice is quite satisfying. All the flavors I had were quite good. The only one I found a little bland was the crab, but with some soy sauce, it was fine. I don't really have any reports about the service. I ordered online for pickup. But the staff at the front was nice. My only major gripe is the parking situation of this Plaza. There's so few parking spaces with many restaurants. You can't park in the adjacent businesses, but I have seen people park across the street in other corporate businesses. If you manage to find parking, this place is petty good read more

Tip: yelp check in for 10% off Wonderfully simple menu, there's five options: kbbq, salmon, shrimp, tuna mayo and vegan. You can pretty much get a pretty good tasting of the mehu by doing a quartet for 15.50 By order of popularity according to the cashier: Kbbq Salmon Tuna mayo They didn't have the flowers available to decorate the bun when I ordered but it looks super cute when it does. read more

Got the tuna mayo. One of the best onigiris I've had. I miss the mentaiko onigiri from Marugame but now that they've discontinued it, will be coming here instead. It doesn't look like much but it's delicious. The fish to rice ratio is better than most places I've had, big plus. read more

i've had a lot of rice balls back in the bay where i used to live so it was hard for me to give this place anything more than 4 stars, i would really give 3.5. the reason for this is because it doesn't stay together like a rice ball should! it falls apart really easily so we thought the rice might not have been sticky enough. other than that, the flavors were delicious. the meat and fish were cooked really well and seasoned to perfection. it was a great snack to have while waiting for another restaurant nearby. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a few months and finally did today. I was sadly disappointed. I ordered the shrimp crab and K barbecue beef and it was honestly some of the worst tasting food I've had in a long time I give a star for service that was fine, if you're going to have rice in your name, I would think the rice would be very good, yeah it was terrible. It tasted overcooked. It tasted old. It fell apart. It was honestly a really dismal experience all around. I don't really recommend this food there are plenty of other places around this part of town that have better execution all around read more

What a fantastic place!! The service was phenomenal, prices fair, wait time was quick and window was easy to find. Ample seating and parking available, too. The food, tho. That was the best part!! My husband and I both got quartets and lemonade. I also got the truffle corn. Everything was soooo good! We ordered to go, everything was packed with care, and it drove home well. Even my 1 year old loved it, especially the KBBQ Beef! Definitely coming back and highly recommend! read more

Looking at the photos and reviews, I was anticipating a spot that I'd comeback to and highly recommend. Sadly, that isn't the case with Ricebunn. The food wasn't horrible, I just had a bit higher expectations. The rice in the Onigiri felt a bit too hard and maybe undercooked. Granted, I'm no Onigiri specialist, but I was hoping the rice was a bit more soft, felt like I was eating undercooked rice for the most part. The Spicy KBBQ and Spicy Salmon are probably the two I'd recommend. The Spicy Tuna left me desiring more to be honest. Ricebunn is located at the TRADE in Irvine, so there's plenty of seating and it's outdoor seating as well so it's a nice spot to hang out and try the vendors that are available. read more

Really tasty & big portion onigiris! I love the seasoning they put bc it compliments the salmon, tuna, and bbq really well! The service was friendly but had to wait about 15 mins for my order of 4. Not a biggie since they make it really fresh for you. I'd rather have fresh food than frozen, honestly. I will definitely come back here when I'm in the area! $12 for a trio of onigiris (best deal) or $4.49 for just 1 onigiri + TAX. read more

My friends and I came here during our lunch break and the food & service did not disappoint Between my friend and I, we ordered the KBBQ Beef Plate, onigiri, and a salmon plate. The plates were very filling and tasty. You could tell that the beef was good quality by the way it fell apart in your mouth. Also, while we were waiting, the owners gave my friend and I a free ice cream macaron. They were honestly so sweet and hospitable. Highly recommend! read more

The food and flavors were ok, wouldn't come back to this place though. I've def had better onigiri. I ordered their 4 set to try their different meat options and ordered through their kiosk... but they got my order wrong. I had ordered Spicy salmon, spicy crab, spicy shrimp, and spicy tuna mayo... but instead of getting the crab, I was given the kbbq beef. Their "spicy option" was a bit misleading... all it was is a drizzle of sriracha on top of the onigiri. I would have expected the filling to be incorporated with spice. Was very messy to eat. Fillings were kinda scarce on the inside. They add a dallop of the filling on top of the onigiri, which I'm guessing is to help distinguish which onigiri is which. But it just made it messier to eat. The rice was not as compacted either so everything kinda falls apart after one bite. If you're looking for a really good onigiri place in that area, I'd suggest to try Lagu Cafe. read more

THE BEST ONIGIRI EVER!!! To begin, my partner and I have have been on the hunt for the perfect onigiri and this place fits the bill exactly. We've tried onigiri from different places in both San Diego and LA, and this is by far our favorite. The spot that it's in is also really cute, it's like an outdoor food court which adds to the experience. The onigiri is seasoned with furikake, there's a big dollop of protein on top, it has the perfect fish to rice ratio (which a lot of onigiri places fail at), and the service is amazing. The worker (I am not sure if he is the owner) gave us an extra onigiri and seasoned cucumbers for free with our order because it was our first time trying. I highly recommend coming to this spot for the most perfect onigiri you'll ever try! read more

Okay... So this place is filling, but wtf did they think when creating the menu for Onigiris Like don't get me wrong, customer service is great and all that, but in the end i'm here for the food. I had the 4 count of the KBBQ BEEF, SHRIMP, SPICY CRAB, and SPICY SALMON. All of them were really good! The price was ~$15 which I thought was fair because the pieces are nice and big. Rice was cooked perfectly, great seasoning, good quality meat, and what ever sauce they are using for the spicy ones is really good. read more

I needed a quick meal before my flight and this was the wrong place to go to! There were absolutely 0 customers ahead of me and my order of 7 rice buns took 30 minutes to wait for! They didn't apologize for the wait, even when I asked for an update on my order. For the price, you can definitely get better and cheaper musubis at your local Asian market. read more

Stopped by the food court to get some Thai food just to find out it was closed so decided to give this place a shot! Really wasn't expecting much protein in the onigiris and thought they would be skimpy but man it was not only filled but they put it on the top too. Front person so so nice so just for the service alone 11/10. Their cucumber salad is also very similar to the DinTaiFung ones with a little bit of kick.
