I was first introduced to Rey-Azteca at the Johnstown location on Scalp Ave. which has been closed for years, now there are locations all over the place including from Palmyra to Pittsburgh and I'm sure other places as well. Anyway, three of us visited the Somerset location for lunch and greatly enjoyed our meals. The chips were fabulous and our entrees delicious. Arturo served us and was super friendly, attentive, refilled our chips and drinks promptly and without us asking. YUM! We were in the area and saw that this place had good reviews. We got the chicken flautas, beef tacos, taco salad, queso and churros. Everything was really good and really flavorful. Nothing was excessively greasy either which I really appreciate. They were more than willing to swap meat for rice on the taco salad to make it vegetarian which was really nice. Wide variety on the menu, the beef tip in my selection was absolutely delicious, and the rest of my party also thoroughly enjoyed their meals. We ordered take out and it was the first time we have tried their food. My husband had hard tacos and two beef burritos. I ordered the TACO Salad and it was excellent. My husband enjoyed his food also. The order came with a paper bag of fresh warm and crunchy taco chips with a Styrofoam cup of salsa. It was a rainy Friday night in February and we wanted to try a new place. We settled on Rey-Azteca thinking they would have strong margaritas and tasty tacos. The restaurant is fully decorated from top to bottom, very festive and the servers are all really nice. It was mostly empty only a two other tables had people dining and so everyone was really attentive. The margarita came first and it was subpar not very good, just tasted like a cheap mixer with bottom shelf tequila. The food came and it was not authentic Mexican or even Tex-Mex we asked what part of Mexico they were from because I was curious and it just seems like they have substituted some crucial ingredients to getting that authentic flavor. All in all maybe for happy hour or quick festive ambiance this is a good choice. read more

I grew up eating Mexican food in Southern CA so I know good Mexican food when I taste it...how did Rey-Azteca do? First of all a full parking lot is a good sign. We were quickly seated. Chips and Salsa is always a quick gauge of what a place will be like. Chips? Sturdy (which is important...no one likes a weak chip that can't carry its load) but needed to be saltier. Salsa? Freshly made...no heat but very flavorful. They had a large menu, which seems common these days at Mexican places. If they have my tester meal, I always get it....Carnitas. If it is on the menu, I try it everywhere. If you can't do good carnitas, get out of my face. Rey-Azteca hit it out of the park. While I prefer the pork ends slightly crispy (theirs were not), the tenderness and flavor with the green tomatillo sauce was superb. Rice and beans (another dead giveaway of quality Mexican) were both excellent. The tortillas were not freshly made but everything else was so good, I can overlook this detail in central PA. Their standard margarita was serviceable. Service, which some had complained about in reviews was great. I wish I had a place with food this good in my hometown...I'd be a regular. read more

Worst meal. Fajitas never looked so bad!!!! Tiny bits/kibble of chicken and beef amongst 3 times as much onions and green peppers called fajitas. Cant tell what is what on the plate. Where are the strips of marinated beef and chicken? What are you serving??!! If I'd take a picture of that and post it you'd be laughed at! How long does it take to cut protein that small. Fajitas for 2? Chipped pile of what tasted like burnt pan renderings. The liquid salsa and tasteless cheese water topped it all off. The frozen margaritas were not- as if they had unplugged the machine and now warm and syrup like. When will Somerset let in the larger chain restaurants?! Out-of-towner here, from NJ. Was looking to eat, use restroom and get gas before hopping back on the highway after visiting the Flight 93 Memorial. And this place hit the spot. Great menu, fast and friendly service, really clean restroom. I love being able to eat well on the road! Not limited to salty and fried fast food. My brother even enjoyed a beer. Complimentary baskets of chips are always a plus. Other reviewers referred to this place as Americanized Mexican. I agree it's friendlier to a mainstream palate with their use of shredded chicken breast, rather than dark meat. But a keen ear will hear classic salsa music playing throughout, making us dance a little bit in our seats! read more

For Americanized Mexican food, they offered a very fine meal. Stopped here on the way for a weekend visit to Washington, DC. The restuarant is quite large and broken up into several different rooms / sections. Of course we started the meal with their complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were warm, but the salsa was pretty weak in flavor. I think they offer a spicier version, but we forgot to ask for it. We are big fans of white cheese dip (usually made with chihuahua cheese and diced jalapenos, but their version was also not very spicy. I ordered one of their combo platters consisting of a taco, burrito, rice and refried beans. They were tasty...just what you'd expect for a restaurant like this one, but nothing out of the ordinary. Rey Azteca's menu lists dozens of Mexican appetizers; entrees such as fajitas, burritos, salads, and specials; desserts; and drinks. Our server was Alejandro, and he was very nice. During the pandemic, he wore a face mask, and he seated my husband and me at a clean table that was socially distanced from other tables. He brought out free chips and salsa, and he brought us our choice of drinks. When we were ready to order our food, Alejandro accurately took our order. The chef cooked our food in a short time. When we were done eating, we waited a while for the check. I have lived in expensive cities for much of my life, but I thought that the prices were reasonable--about $34 total for two people. Here are my reviews for the foods: Guacamole dip - 10 stars! - This guacamole contained the perfect balance of fresh avocado, cilantro, salt, etc. It somehow contained only one piece of tomato, but my husband hates tomato, so he felt pleased. Seriously, this guacamole tasted delicious. Quesadilla deluxe - 5 stars - This quesadilla was filled with chicken and cheese. On the side was shredded lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and cheese. Also included was Spanish rice that had a mild but nice flavor. Steak fajita dinner - 2 stars - My husband ate much of this entree but only because he was hungry. My husband is part Mexican and grew up eating authentic homemade Mexican food. He said that he did not like the taste of this entree but did not say exactly why. The raw food caution sign on the menu should be the only thing taken seriously at this place because they do server under cooked food There were people waiting as we left and they were waiting for at least 20 mins. The server said there was no available tables but the surrounding tables by the table I was at were all open... They ended up walking out!!
