UPDATE ON ORIGINAL REVIEW - I was here 8 years ago and gave this place 5 stars but something has gone terribly wrong. 8 years lasted and it was honestly disgusting. My bill for 2 people was $55 and that was without drinks. I ordered carne asada and I don't think the meat could have gotten any thinner and it was full of fat. By the time i trimmed all the fat the portion was not near justifiable to the cost. They digit to bring me the fixings to go along with my meal and when i asked they brought a plate of shredded lettuce with maybe a teaspoon of cheese and a little dab of guac. It was honestly bizarre. I was traveling and needed to eat or I would have left. You are also charged for chips and salsa. We did get two baskets so I'm not sure if it's only for the 2nd basket but if that's the case the first basket shouldn't be half full and same with the salsa. I felt so sick when I left and so did the other half of my party. I would never return. read more

We stopped by on a whim yesterday just before 2:30pm and got seated immediately. The inside is fairly large with a bunch of tables and booths along with a bar area. They have lunch specials until 2:30 and we put in our orders before then. Their menu is pretty big with a ton of options. A friend and I stopped in on Labor Day and had a wonderful time! We were greeted and seated right away. The server brought us complimentary chips and salsa the moment we sat down. I ordered Lunch #11 which was a cheese quesadilla, rice, chicken flauta, and beef chile rellena. Everything was absolutely delicious! I couldn't get enough. The prices were also incredibly reasonable and I was extremely satisfied with the bang for my buck. The restaurant was nice and clean and not busy at all on a holiday so it was a nice place to relax. I have eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants and the food here is the best. Their tortilla chips that they serve before the food are always fresh tasting and go very well with their somewhat spicy, but not too spicy salsa. Their burritos are a good mix of the proteins and veggies and rice, and I am particularly fond of the different sauces that they have for their burritos and enchiladas. They have a very interesting street food menu, which I like and provides food that are supposed to be much more similar to what you would find in Mexico. I do not mind that the Mexican food they have on their main menu is clearly Mexican American and even text Max, but I do like that. I have the option of getting food that is supposed to be somewhat more authentic. One thing I particularly like here that does not get much attention on the menu is that you can order aside of black beans. That is rather unusual for a Mexican restaurant and I like it because it does allow for me to add some extra heft and flavor to the food. Having the opportunity to order black beans as aside is something I like because it is a way of adding an extra, but not in a way that is very fatty or oily. Their cheese sauces are very good as a side, but sometimes I do not want something like that as a side. Staff is very nice here and I have gotten takeout several times without noticing any problems. read more

This place flies under the radar and I have no idea why! It's some of the best Mexican food around! It's not usually very crowded. It's clean and has a nice outdoor patio in the summer, although I've never sat out there. I've also sat at the bar a few times to dine alone or have a margarita while I order takeout and I've always had a good experience. I will say the drinks here are fantastic. A good price for a huge glass of margarita. What I was disappointed in was the food. The way this restaurant is decorated makes it look super authentic. I had high hopes. I moved to Pittsburgh from NYC and I've been looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant. The quesadillas did not do it for me. The cheese was too sharp, tasted like a blend of American cheeses rather than Mexican cheeses. The chips were really good though and the tortilla itself was crispy and delicious. Literally was just the cheese. My partner Got another dish with cheese and it tasted completely different in a good way. Whatever cheese is used for the quesadillas, please try again with that. Not long later a man came to our table with his own guacamole station which we def took advantage of, we've never been to a restaurant where they made the guac fresh in front of you! I don't even like avocados but was happy I gave it a taste cause it was delicious. If you like guacamole at all I think it's worth it!! On to the food...I ordered flautas and my husband ordered one of their lunch plates which had an assortment of items. I have literally never had a flauta in my life before this. I usually stick to quesadillas or enchiladas, idk what came over me! But I'm SO GLAD it did. The food came out piping hot and as soon as I could dig in, I did. The flautas were one of the most delicious things I've ever consumed, easily. It was so good y'all!! The beans and rice on the side were also tasty & perfectly cooked, my husband agrees. I could only get through one of my flautas before I hit a wall, but my husband crushed his entire plate. We both really enjoyed our food and can't wait to go back. I last reviewed Rey Azteca over 2 years ago, yet my family is ordering the exact same entrees 2 years later. Yesterday was my first time ordering here during COVID. It was quick and easy over the phone and we were provided with an order number. When I went to pick the food up there were people seated inside very spaced out. Our food transferred well to home. We ordered our usuals- pollo adobe, vegetarian #1and the kids beef taco, rice and beans. Everything was amazing like always. I need to order out from here more often. The food here was great. I was nearby for an appointment and got the lunch special here. It had a chicken flauta and beef taco and both were absolutely delicious. I've left a review for another Rey Azteca restaurant before. This is a good, not so expensive Mexican restaurant. My favorite in the local area in Monroeville of the few that are around. I want to point out the street menu. Game changer for most Mexican restaurants . A lot of them will not do this even one night. Currently that menu is every day! I've been back 3x this week alone for something off that menu. The Lengua tacos were phenomenal! I've only had that 2x before at other places (not the easiest to find) and those times were just ok. The street corn wasn't the best I've had recently BUT it wasn't bad. Just not as heavy on the seasoning that I am used to. The wait time wasn't super long and we had a table in 15 mins. Side note: I have also order take out from here. I live 20 mins away. Got there was just finishing up and took it home. Their take out travels very well. Was super hot upon arriving home. read more

This is our second time here within the last few weeks, third visit overall. The food here is delicious, at least the items we have ordered so far. The "welcome" chips and salsa were a good start. The salsa tasted fresh with a nice hint of cilantro. My date always gets tacos regardless of which Mexican restaurant we come to, and she loved them. Our previous visit was the first time we saw the "street food" menu. I ordered the street tacos platter, and the little tacos were stuffed with delicious little chunks of steak, onions, and cilantro. They were very good. Tonight I ordered the street burrito, and it was fantastic. Big and fat and stuffed with steak, rice, lettuce, cheese, & sour cream. I could finish only half of it but I would most definitely order it again. The service staff takes a "by committee" approach, which is fine, but sometimes the person who comes to your table is completely unaware of what the previous person did or asked. What was truly impressive was the speed at which the food arrived. It couldn't have been more than 5 minutes after we ordered. And it did not look or taste hurriedly put together. The decor is colorful and inviting. This would have been a 5 star review if we had not decided to order dessert. I was intrigued and asked the server if the fried ice cream was really fried, or if it was, as some restaurants do, just rolled in some cinnamon or other kind of coating and advertised as fried. She assured me that it was indeed fried, and we decided to go for it. To my great disappointment, if this ice cream had been fried, then it was fried and then put in the freezer. I was looking forward to the wonderful sensation of the little layer of melted ice cream just under the fried surface and the whipped cream. Not fried. Too bad. First thing I will say is that their menu is extensive but tiring to read. There are too many combinations listed which specifically say "no substitutions". I'm not into taking more time to peruse the menu than it takes to eat the darned meal so opted for just selecting a la carte -- one beef soft taco, one chicken enchilada, and rice. Fortunately, ordering a la carte wasn't too expensive -- only coming to just under 12 bucks for the meal, a diet coke, and tip. The food was ok; about the norm for a good many of the Mexican restaurants. Service was prompt, friendly, and efficient as expected with chips and salsa brought to the table immediately. After shopping, who would turn down a Mexican meal? Not I, said I! This is a nice little spot that sits in a small strip area. There is ample parking with easy access in and out of the lot. The staff here is super friendly and they greeted me and everyone else immediately upon walking in the door. The dining area isn't huge but it was large enough that you didn't feel like you were a part of your neighbors conversation. The menu, my goodness, is massive. I almost got a headache after trying to figure out what I truly wanted to claim for my meal that evening. Options are good so no complaints there. We were served the usual chips and salsa but, quite honestly, the salsa was the only thing I did not like. It lacked flavor and it was room temperature, not cold, not warm just not a good temperature for salsa, if that makes any sense. It lacked any real flavor and just tasted like pulsed canned tomatoes to me...meh. Our meals were very very good. We had a shrimp burrito and shrimp.....and they were amazing. The shrimp, cheese, beans, rice and side of guac were the real deal. Shrimp were cooked perfectly and seasoned well.
