The tacos at Las Palmas are SUPER delicious and I definitely need to go back there again when I'm in Oakland!! The service is fast, they make it in front of you, and you have the option of picking some stuff up at the grocery store while you are there. Friendly family type ambiance and it feels good to know you are supporting a small business like this. At $4 a taco, when they are generous with the authentic meat filling, double up on the freshly grilled corn tortillas, and allow unlimited toppings made fresh daily make these tacos one of the best deals around. The filling is already super flavorful, so you don't necessarily need extra toppings, but I like adding extra onions and cilantro. For me, a lot of the salsas were extra spicy, so my recommendation is to taste them before putting them on the taco. The ones I got honestly didn't need any extra added flavor. Las Palmas is a local chain business that operates some supermarkets and also sometimes sells pre-made foods in other locations. It specializes in selling Mexican and Central American foods. Its website says that its supermarkets offer several thousand products such as meats, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and more. I do not recall shopping at their supermarkets, but perhaps I should shop there. So far, I think that I have been a customer of only their tent that was set up at the Pittsburgh Taco Festival in 2025. I bought one al pastor (pork) taco and one bisteck (beef) taco for about $8 total. The employees had the meat pre-cooked, so I did not have to wait long for my tacos to be ready. Don't expect it to be like other street tacos you've had. Mexico is vast and has so many different regions which each have many different types of tacos and stands and shops and trucks, and there are so many different ways to do tacos. This place pre-prepares most of the meats en-masse and then dumps them on a large duo of corn tortillas (twice the size of the tacos you're used to, but still only 2 or 3 dollars), and puts nothing at all on them. Then you mosey over to the salsa bar, and add any one of about 10 different salsas and about 10 other different veggie-type condiments. Muy generoso! I think the location in Dormont is even better, by the way - that's the original. Be warned. Most of the salsas will blow your head off. If they will blow my head off (and I can take it, believe me), then they may be too much for a lot of you. The chicken tasted all right, but my son didn't feel too well afterwards so not sure how fresh the meat was when we visited. I am writing this review to state my case that "Las Palmas", the renowned Mexican taco establishment, is the best restaurant in Pittsburgh. I can hear your voices -- "But Adam, how is that possible?" -- let me paint you a picture. Las Palmas is a grocery store/taco stand that has 4 locations across the greater Pittsburgh area. The two that I frequent are the Oakland location, and the Brookline location. Both are near flawless. To get your hands on these delicacies you must walk inside the grocery store part, go to the register, and ask for the amount of tacos you'd like to order. You pay, and then they give you a slip of paper with the number of tacos you get. The grocery store part also provides Mexican sodas, as well as other various goods. After you get your slip, you head out to the grill, hand the person cooking your paper, and then tell them what kind of meat you want inside your corn tortillas. I usually go for steak, Al pastor, or chorizo. There's also ribeye which they grill right in front of you. After you receive your food, there's a toppings bar that has various sauces, onions, tomatoes, and limes. No restrictions on how much you get. No condiment police here. You can either take it to go or eat is outside. The Brookline location has benches you can eat on in the summer. The ambiance is one of hungry people looking to get a quick bite. One taco is 3 dollars. They are BIG, lots of meat, infinite toppings, 3 tacos is more than enough for even a human being over the size of 6 foot 5 inches. Las Palmas is the heart of Oakland and one of my go-to places when I lived in Pittsburgh (literally when I came back, Las Palmas was the one place I made sure I stopped by). They have so many options for their cart from carnitas to pollo to carne asada to chorizo and a lot of side sauces to put on it. Been coming back here for around 7 yrs now and it's still one of my absolute favorite taco places. Prices have increased with time just a little but still super worth it for me. If you love spicy and delicious sauces, please try their red salsas and the red pepper paste. I always get bistec because it's my personal preference but they've added lots more options now. Order inside with the cashier the number of tacos you want and then bring it out and give it to the person standing outside. Top your taco off however you normally like. ** Cheap and solid taco place with a topping bar to customize your tacos! Crispy but soft taco shells add a nice flare. Las Palmas is definitely a solid taco spot that tastes pretty authentic and is only $2.50 a taco, so its a solid choice for students. Its a bit further from the bus stop on Fifth, but on warmer days its worth the trip. In order to get tacos, you need to go into the grocery store and let the cashier know how many tacos you want, and after paying you will get a receipt that you take to the stand outside. The person at the stand will then take your receipt, and then you tell him what toppings you want. I really like how they put the soft taco shells on the pan for a bit to give it a nice crispy texture to it. My favorite protein hands down is the ground beef, which is on the saltier side but I think goes very well with the guac, onions, cilantro, and salsa in the topping bar. Drizzle in a hint of lime and your in business ;). The ribeye is definitely worth trying, but it can get pretty oily, and I have a feeling they don't always want you to get it because it's a more expensive protein that they tuck away and they cook on the spot but its for sure an option to try out. I also like how they allow you to put as many toppings as you want to cater to your unique tastebuds. That being said... WARNING: Some of the hot salsas are super hot and will burn your butt so be careful!! Of course, the pico de gallo that just looks like straight tomato, the onions, and the guac are all safe which is what I usually go with. For the other salsas, I'd strongly advise you put them into the containers above the toppings so that you can test them first before dumping them all over your tacos. I've friends who've eaten the hottest salsa for losing a bet and they've told me you feel the burn twice - once down ur mouth and another when you use the restroom... The main downsides are that 1) this place has closed down a few times due to health concerns (maybe twice) so eat at your own risk, however I've eaten here several times and have been fine and 2) the tacos definitely do get soggy over time so eat them while they're fresh! You have the choice between chicken, steak, chorizo, and ground beef. I got myself four to go, this was going to be my lunch and dinner for the day. I went with two chicken, a ground beef, and a chorizo. Along with this they ask you if you want any sauce or toppings. Usually they have a little buffet style bar setup so you can do this, but due to the risks of the world right now, they have them all prepackaged for them to give you in your food container and you go on you way. I decided to go with the medium sauce and cilantro. After both my lunch and dinner for the day, I can tell you with certainty that I was satisfied by the food. I am not a big fan of corn tortillas, but these ones made this dish tastier somehow. Plus they held up against the juices from the meat. The chicken was seasoned perfectly and the chunks of onions that accompanied gave the dish more texture. The ground beef was a bit dry to my liking. And the chorizo was by far my favorite of what I got. Who could not like chorizo. What pulled everything together was the little containers of sides. The cilantro was so fresh and added to the authenticity. The medium sauce, for me, gave the tacos just enough of a spice kick. My noise was running from the heat, but I was happy to put up with that. This is a hidden jewel located as part of a Mexican grocery on Atwood right off Forbes that UPitt students are fortunate to have near them. As a Texan, I've grown up having had a lot of tacos because it's prevalent everywhere, whether it be Austin, Dallas, Houston, etc. Y'all Pittsburgians (Yinzers?) have it lucky to have some really authentic, delicioso tacos up in the north. Tacos are 2.50 each and you pay for them in the grocery (which also sells a bunch of other Mexican grocery items if you are lacking). The guy outside cooking them asks what you want for your order, and you can either ask him what they have (usually beef, carnitas, barbacoa, and chicken right then and there), or you can ask him to fire up some ribeye steak for you (extra 3 minutes but so so worth it). Unlimited toppings outside include a mildly spicy guacomole sauce, mild and spicy sauces, tomatoes (pico), onions, cilantro, hot peppers, limes and more. I was shocked at how big the tacos were considering how cheap they were! I paid $7.50 for 3 tacos, but I think 2 tacos would be plenty. I got 2 chicken and 1 carnitas, and all 3 tacos were awesome. I am someone who doesn't eat meat very often and is a little bit picky when it comes to meat, but the meat here is well-cooked and perfectly seasoned. I especially liked the chicken tacos. The ordering process is a little bit unique, but it's pretty easy if you know what you're doing. There is a topping bar right outside so you can add your own guac, salsa, etc. The salsas were super spicy, but the flavors were delicious and the spice did not take away from the flavor at all. What an absolute gem in the city of Pittsburgh. These tacos are super affordable and they taste like an authentic street taco from Mexico! I got two tacos, one with pineapple pork and one with chicken, and of course I had to add all of the toppings. There are 4 different salsas ranging in different spice levels, I tried them all and every single one was delicious!!
