I've been to the store many times although everything is outrageously overpriced my experience hasn't been that bad , unfortunately when I think of this store good customer service is the last thing that comes to mind , my experience today made me want to leave a review . I ordered a plastic lawn chair for my patio , just 1 , I paid for it and all I had to do was come in and pick it up , when I got into the store there was a line so I waited about 10 mins in line and when I got up to the cashier , i told her i have a out side plastic chair that is paid for and I'm her to pick it up , she told me to wait near the front door , she called for help and went back to helping (other) customers , the chair is less the 5 pounds , there shop is less then 20 feet away from the cashier but she didn't even bother to really help , so I stood there for 10 more mins watching people come into the store wait in line and leave , but I was still there waiting for 1 plastic chair , and also watched some guys that worked there helping others customers in line and ignoring me , I left without the chair because I ordered food before I entered thinking all I was doing is picking up 1 plastic chair , over 20 mins of waiting is ridiculous for a quick pick up , I'd rather pay less and wait a little longer to get what I need instead of dealing with this store again . read more

I generally love Rex Hardware the people are mostly helpful and show a professional courtesy toward customers - I say mostly because its the majority of them...I still remember when I was younger and the creaky floors they had back in the hardware section they had employees that would help with any and all questions I had however on occasion I see a face I dont recognize like today a near bald headed gentleman w thick glasses gave me a rancid response to a curious question I had over procedure that sorta shocked me However on the whole the people are generally sweethearts read more

COULD NOT FIND THE HELPFUL HARDWARE MAN HERE!!!! HE MUST OF DIED WHEN THEY HAD THE FIRE, YEARS AGO. Dropped in to get some items I saw advertised in the Ace Hardware ad and online. Brought the online ad to the "big" guy at the counter, he glanced at the printout and said "we don't have that Ace item." I asked him if he had anything similar on sale, he pursed his lips, made a face and said, "No." and told me I could check, pointing "over there." The store was not busy, no one was checking out. Consistent rude, inattentive, uncaring customer service, along with overpriced items make this NOT THE HELPFUL PLACE, BUT THE PLACE TO GO AND GET REAMED!!! read more

I love Rex Hardware! The staff is always friendly and helpful, a refreshing change from going to OSH or Lowe's. They are genuinely interested in making sure you leave satisfied. That, and their huge inventory (especially kitchenware) will keep me coming back for a long time. It's like hardware stores used to be fifty years ago. read more

the fire a few years ago was so bittersweet. it was horribly sad to watch a historical business burn to the ground.. but you should see it now! the country store is flippin adorable. i found cute mugs and teas, a little apartment composter and great kitchen and baking utensils for great prices. you have to check out the country store for gifts or for a self treat. they have a great variety of super cute homey stuff! read more

Outstanding, knowledgeable staff - greet you when you enter, offer help, etc. In my case they didn't have the particular type of light switch I wanted, but offered to order it - and called me 3 days later when it arrived. This was only an $11. item, so their great service was not due to huge profits for the store. When I went to pick up the switch, they found it immediately in the back from and gave me further advice on an electrical problem. I love this place. read more

This is better than any darn Corporation! Forget all the rest of the junk that is being sold in the big stores. What ACE sells works! And you get great service!!! Real people. Sophia De Largo read more

Right in the middle of a terrific shopping district. Small-ish family-run business catering to both homemakers and home do-it-yourselfers. Not really for any big projects, but the basics for running a household. Best for gift shopping and browsing with more than one set of interests. A little more kitchen type? Go to the right. More garage type? You'll feel at home on the left. Helpful variety of family members in the middle at the cash registers. Very friendly and comfortable in their space. They really do care about their customers. The product selection reflects the upscale eclectic shopping district. So do the prices. Don't miss this place if you're walking the McNear District. read more

Love it! Has the feel of a home town hardware store (which is what it is), not the big box stores. has a little of everything. If you can't find what you need; maybe you don't need it! read more

Good staff, surprisingly large selection of home hardware items; they should have about everything you need, I'm here about once per week and never disappointed. The only time I couldn't find what I needed was because the item that I was looking for doesn't exist, but the guy was nice enough to humor me and help me look for a minute just in case. read more

Super friendly folks and hardware! I like that they also have a section devoted to kitchen items (and other housewares) as I can find gifts here as well as hedge trimmers. I also like that they stock bird seed. :) A great local shop with a a lot of heart. read more

Jeff (the owner) is as helpful as they get. He always has time for you, whether it involves a sale for them or not. He and his employees are an example of what good old fashioned customer service used to be like! Very well-supplied hardware and also "country store" items ... good place to find unique gifts. read more

The staff is extremely helpful and makes this place worth going to; although there adhesive recommendations have been consistently poor. A little pricey but so are all the local hardware stores. read more

Helpful, friendly and local. What more could you ask for? I needed and obscure $1.25 part and they found it for me and had me out the door in record time. read more

Remember that hardware store that your father or in some cases, grandfather had taken you to? This is that hardware store. Friendly staff, helpful and knowledgeable. Good jokes and an assortment for most household needs. This place is awesome. read more

I was lucky enough to spend some time on an organic farm just outside of Petaluma last summer and this is the store that we shopped at for things that were needed for repairs and what not. The owner was raised in the area and knows what to use and how to use it to solve local problems. Always helpful and friendly, Rex's was a pleasure to do business with. read more

I'm a home town local business owner and Rex is my local store for lots of things. They don't have it all but who does and it doesn't matter. Jeff and his staff are awesome and know there craft. When I walk in I tell them what I need and they find it for me. I'm a salesman and I appreciate service. As a Realtor I use a special combo lockbox for my listings, REO. And I can buy them at Lowes or Home Depot for $10.00 less but honestly it's Jeff and the fact that if they break or have problems Jeff just gives me a new one. It,s well worth the price and savings to me in time and aggravation. Lowes and Home Depot are great and there is room for both. Thank you Jeff and the staff. And to all you reading this, make sure you shop Rex. We need this store for our everyday hardware items. read more

Walked in asked some paint questions and how the Ace guarantees work. The tall guy with glasses acted like he was so busy at 2pm on Friday afternoon, NO OTHER CUSTOMERS WERE IN THE STORE!!! He couldn't wait to get back to sorting his nuts and bolts. Don't know if they only want white bread and mayonaise in their store or rednecks. This attitude was similar to the last time I went there 6 months ago to get some garden supplies. Granted the lady at the cashier spot is always nice and helpful. prices are high average service is spotty selection is limited to outdated read more

I've been shopping here since I was a kid and have always had great help and customer service. This last visit, however, may have turned me off permanently. I went in to buy my trusty $5 bottle of Drano Gel Max for a clogged drain. Even though I didn't ask for his opinion, the big guy who showed me where it was started telling me I needed to buy a $10 bottle of a brand I'd never used before. Said it was the best, how to use it, etc. So I deferred to him, mainly because by the time he was finished I felt it would be rude to go with the Drano. Take it home, use it exactly how he told me to, it didn't do ANYTHING, and now I am left with a tub of standing water plus chemicals. Google reviews of the product online and see tons of one-star "This stuff doesn't work!" reviews. No problem, I'll just take it back and explain it didn't work. Figure it might be helpful for them to know before they keep recommending it to customers. Well, the big man and the lady who rang me up were not pleased to see me back or to hear the product didn't work. The man tells me I must need a plumber, and the checkout lady says it must be a mainline clog! No smiles, no "I'm sorry it didn't work for you." Just an unpleasant attitude like I was a problem for them. This time I politely ignore their advice and go get my Drano. They both tell me it won't work if the other stuff didn't. I again politely ignore their advice. I ask if they would offer a refund on the product they recommended. The lady coldly tells me "No." So I buy my Drano, take it home and my drain is cleared in 10 minutes. I wouldn't have minded the no refund part, if it weren't for the grumpy, unfriendly attitude and drastic "diagnoses" these two made when I returned. Completely unhelpful. read more

I have been shopping at Rex hardware for 30 years. There has rarely been a time where I needed some obscure part they didn't have. The salespeople always know where it is in the store and take you to it. Jeff and his staff are friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. If they don't have something and they can't order it for you they're more than happy to tell you where to go to find it. Today, needing a part for a toilet the salesperson handed me a replacement part telling me he wasn't sure if it would fit in my particular toilet. "Take it home and give it a try if it doesn't work just bring it back. " It worked like a charm. read more

Great service! From cooking items to gadgets they have much more to choose from than your local hardware store. The staff was friendly and responsive and helped me find exactly what I needed. Had to stop back to pick up a few last-minute items to finish my project and, again, the knowledgeable staff gave me some great tips I hadn't considered. I would recommended Ace for any project--large or small. read more

A wonderful hardware store that reminds me a bit of the old 5 'n dime shops of old. The selection is wonderful, the ambiance is great, the staff is helpful and fun. My only complaint could be that the prices seem to be a little bit padded on some items, but for the feeling of actually being cared for as a customer, I will gladly pay s little extra! My grand kids love the stuffed bear in the front window! read more

For such a small store, you wouldn't think that they would have everything you need - but they DO. Any small home project (lumber aside) and I swear to you, Home Depot may have 7 out of 10 things that you are looking for - but Rex's will have 10 out of 10. No joke. Not only that - but the folks who work there, who have worked there for years, are BEYOND helpful. Need some advice on how to tackle a home project - these folks are my go tos. No matter what your flavor, this place is on my Petaluma Tour for my out of town visitors. Fun and Functional. read more

My go to! Love the friendly staff, they have great gifts and other things. And everyone is super helpful

Just a cool local resource... Super friendly staff and they do know a lot more than the chongos at Home Depot. On top of all that their prices are decent, and I love their self service bulk fasteners - so if I only need 75 screws I don't have to buy two boxes of 50. read more

I have tried to love Rex. I have patronized them. I will never buy another thing there. I would rather drive to OSH or Target than to be disrespected and robbed at Rex. 1. Most of the staff are useless. They are quite good however, at being needlessly rude. 2. Merchandise is boring, very few choices, always out of what you came for AND three times more expensive across the board than OSH or Target. 3. This is a ghetto store, taking advantage of the residents who are elderly or otherwise unable to drive to stores that don't make a practice of gouging. The return policy is not family/community oriented; quite the opposite. If you misplace your stinkin' receipt, you will get a store credit because it is "store policy". 4. I purchased a package of furniture shims at 5pm, returned the next morning due to having been wrongly advised by a staff member. The item was $3.79. The only option was a store credit due to misplaced receipt. The same package at OSH was $1.69. If you enjoy being hijacked, this is the place for you. I rest my case. read more

I had 3 keys made, they didn't work and I had to call a locksmith. When I wrote about the problem to Jeff Tomassini, business owner, he sent me a gift certificate - to his store for the cost of the keys when I explained that I moved to different town to get away from Petaluma. Now I have useless gift certificate that I can't even use at my local ACE hardware. I asked for a gift certificate thinking that he would send me one that I could use locally. The guy is a nitwit, and his brother Michael who runs the Bank of the West is one too. He cancelled my account because I complained too much about poor service. This is the attitude that had me running from Petaluma. Who wants to live in a place that subsists on tourist dollars, the wine industry and cheese that clogs our arteries and causes global warming. Plus chicken farming has turned the place into a toxic waste dump with the manure polluting the ground water (well water is undrinkable because of the nitrates) and stinking up the air. The smells in town are revolting, how would you like the smells of cheese manufacturing, dairy farming and chicken manure all mixed together on a Summer's eve? Stinky air blowing through the window and sounds of the stock car races blasting your ear drums. Still want to move there? I don't think so. read more

This is a classic hometown hardware store, even if it operates under the Ace logo. Picking up on an old Monty Python bit, where a customer walked into a similar store looking for half of a white chocolate television (which they had!), it's hard NOT to find what you're looking for. And you don't have to spend much time looking because assistance is always nearby. Service is exceptional. Today we bought a $41 floor cleaning device there. We happened to mention that we were replacing another one that stopped working. The man at the register asked where we bought it, and we said "here." Then he said simply, "No charge - we stand behind the products we sell." Wow. No mystery why this is always our first stop for our hardware and household needs! read more

Jeff Tomasini and his staff are the best! I have lived in Petaluma for 30 years and whenever I have needed a "thing-ama-jig" or a "dooley-wop" for plumbing, electrical, tools, painting or repairing the senior members of this staff can take me right to the item or if they do not have it can tell me what I need. THis is a "May I help you and take you to the item" hardware store. Right in downtown Petaluma it is perfectly situated to help us locals. They also have an extensive "housewares" department where they have every conceivable item you might need in a kitchen. It is easy to get frustrated when trying to repair anything and find just the right parts but this Petaluma store will make it easier to get through. I wanted to amend my review by saying just how important a place this hardware/homeward store has in contributing to the quality of life in our little riverton community. Providing a large inventory carefully selected to provide for the needs of local homeowners and business owners alike and combing this quality inventory with expert advice and counsel on just about any project you might encounter the owners and staff make life easier and more fulfilling for their customers. Some items may cost a few cents more than at the Big Box stores but that minor cost is greatly offset by the advice, care and support at this shop. Shop local and support our local businesses or they will disappear and we will be stuck driving miles to stores with little or no informed staff or going to the Internet and trying to sus out which are the right parts, which threads will work together, and opening the long awaited package from China only to discover the parts will not work, are the wrong size, wrong thread count, wrong color or so roughly finished you will need to buy tools to fix the parts before they are usable. SHOP LOCAL! read more

I visited for the first time to buy a cordless drill. I had a rebate coupon. The manager/owner? not only welcomed the rebate, he also gave me an unmarked, "sale" price that saved an additional $4.
