we had an EXCELLENT experience at Lowe's in Cotati! we are remodeling two bathrooms and it is amazing how organized this store is and how friendly everyone is. We first worked with Drew and he was the "paint guy" and then we worked with Jacob in the tile section. Both couldn't have been nicer! they answered all of our questions and they were very patient. Jacob made a special order and that went amazingly well. These days, customer service is dead, but it is alive and well at Lowe's in Cotati.

Service is warm, intelligent, and deeply informed. Plant selection for quality native plants is very good. Their plants are a little pricey --(perhaps 10-15% more than Home Depot for example) but they stand behind their plants/products. Any plants or products that don't work out, just bring your receipt and they will give you a store credit or credit your card. Much of the value Harmony offers is in the quality of the products, the plants, and the intelligent service. Seriously, there is nowhere else I could go to find out how to dig up a fern from acidic soil, and properly care for it while it overwinters before planting it under a nearby redwood tree in the Spring! Harmony Farms also carries extraordinarily unique products, such as Stella Natura's biodynamic planting guide and a wide variety of seasonal, organic specialty plants as well as hard-to-find organic soil amendments. Parking is abundant. They're located just off of the Hwy 101/Penngrove exit heading east. A large sign that says "Barn" offers a fairly quick turn on your R into a wide gravel driveway. Enjoy!

We live a couple hours away, but come by when we visit family in the area. We stopped in to check out the inventory and so much had changed! The lot seems to have expanded, and the inventory definitely has. A large inventory of beautiful trees, statement pieces for the garden with rare form, variegation, or hard to find cultivars. For example, a golden lace cypress that was simply stunning caught my eye. Boughs of golden lacy leaves with a gorgeous form. Many more very interesting trees, like a gold form Mugo pine, rare ginkgos, unique maples, bonsai stock trees, native oaks, elms. If you are planning a garden design and want a unique tree this is definitely your place. Great for Japanese style and any other garden design. Many dwarf species available. In addition, they have a wide assortment of pond plants, koi fish, pond equipment, pond kits, and the like. They also have a great assortment of succulents and bonsais. They even sell minerals and cute hand made paver stones that look like reds wood trunk slices. Scott, the owner, was a delight and gave me the honor of seeing his private collection (an expansive selection!) of Dyckia and bromeliads and rare euphorbia and other succulents. I could have spent hours in there just taking in all the beauty of the plants. I felt like I found a kindred plant loving spirit in Scott. He's a really nice guy and treated us really well. The best part was the prices were really great. I picked out numerous plants expecting really marked up prices as is typical for nurseries (it IS a business after all). However, I was pleasantly surprised by the fair pricing. I can't wait to come back to pet the dogs, check out the pigeons (they have homing pigeons in a big aviary out back), and nerd out on bonsais and succulents again. If you are curious I highly recommend stopping by.

Sure, California may be experiencing drought, but if you have a garden section, guess what? You need to water your plants. Lowes has started skipping that step but wouldn't dream of knocking a penny off plants that are already in distress when purchased. Home Depot does a slightly better job, but only by a nose. Shopping at Home Depot is generally unpleasant because the stores are, well, warehouses. Wilco has a much smaller garden section, but they tend what they have. They also intermix some unusual or unique plants with common ones which gives the feeling of shopping in a small nursery. Finally, their prices are better than either Lowes or HD. In addition, Wilco is the place to get bird seed for your outdoor birders like me. Lowes has rats they can't control so they quit carrying seed. HD went to tubs, but they don't have the variety that Wilco has. My only issue with Wilco is its sale of live chicks. I get it. Its a farm store. I disapprove but I get it.

When I needed to find something and a very nice young woman helped me as best she could, but then had to get the Manager. Patricia, Mgr., was visibly irritated that I was still looking for something--I had been waiting for her. She found what I wanted, but as I was looking at it, she stated, in a terse voice "we're closed now." I put the item down as I do understand they want to go home. I just felt like instead of standing there glaring at me she might've offered some additional assistance. Instead, I put the item down as I didn't have time to make sure it was the right size and I didn't have time to look for the other strap that I needed that was there on display, but I was not permitted to purchase what I needed. At this time, it was approximately 7:04. To General manager: Patricia needs customer service training--or she needs a different job that does not include interacting with customers. I spent over $400 between the blanket and a gift for someone. Both employees, NOT Patricia, were nice. They smiled and they were helpful. Upon my leaving, the first gal gave me a friendly smile and wished me a good night. When I had walked away from Patricia and I told her thank you, she did not reply. I did say it loud enough for her to hear. I should think that a customer dropping over $400 should be given at least common courtesy. I know if I were the general manager, I would want to know how my managers of each store were treating the customers. I really like the store and it is an hour away from me. I am tempted to come back, but this was quite an unpleasant experience.

I have to say the last owner wasn't particularly nice - the new owners are quite welcoming. There's a huge selection of variety of Rhododendrum's, Japanese maples, Dahlia's and Clivia's with huge redwoods surrounding. The grounds are gorgeous as ever with lovely shaded paths throughout. A new addition is the small shop with soaps and lotions made from herbs. Additionally, we were told by one of the new owners that they know offer event space for weddings. I was very excited to go for a visit and a couple weeks ago I had the chance to get over there. It was the end of August and I was hoping to go home with some plants to perk up a part of my garden and maybe make this part of my regular "going to the nursery to buy plants" rotation. Unfortunately, after perusing all the plants in the section adjacent to the parking lot (the first plants you see when walking in the nursery) and the tables heading down the path, I found them to all be in absolutely terrible shape (some barely alive) and when I finally saw how much they were trying to charge for them, I was really dumbfounded. The place looked disheveled and not well kept up. If they were healthy plants, I think I would have continued exploring the other sections and I could try to justify the price. Note: the prices I saw for 1 gallon "basic" plants are higher than any other nursery I have been to in Petaluma or Sebastopol. My guess is that the owner is overwhelmed and really needs help. It's a large space with sections that I never even had a chance to get to. Not really sure where to go. Nothing is well marked. I only saw one woman working there (owner? seemed like it) near the check out area. She was chatting with a friend the entire time while I stood there waiting to ask some questions about how things were laid out and prices (to see if I was wrong about things). I had been hovering for some time and when her friend finally left, she then walked away. Odd. And that's when I just left because she didn't seem interested in selling plants. First impressions count and this left me deflated. There is a lovely place to go for a walk so if that's what you're looking for, you'll love it.
