This is why you shop local. My key fob came apart and the screw I was given by someone else to hold it together was the wrong size. So it came apart again. I stopped by ACE Hardware right before closing time and the two gentlemen working there helped me to find the miniature screw I needed to repair the key fob. When I tried to pay for the screw and the screwdriver I'd taken off the wall to screw it in, the cashier said "put the screwdriver back." So my total came to $0.47. I felt bad I didn't have any cash so I handed him my debit card. He paused and grabbed the change cup and paid for my screw out of it. So not only did I get individual, expert, efficient help but I left without paying anything. That is how you get return customers. That is how you get someone who has only been to your store a couple times to recommend it to anyone and everyone needing parts, help, whatever. I'm impressed. And I plan to bring cash next time! Service is knowledgeable and spot-on excellent every time we've come here--they really know their store and the price-to-value is very good! They also have something our little ones LOVE...Rex the Wonder Bear!!! Rex is also a great way for kids to use their manners. By asking politely if they can pet Rex, they can feel his thick fur and imagine what it's like to be a polar bear. Old timey style hardware store. I'd dare say almost cute. Lots of inventory. I like the kitchen / housewares area. Have bought a few items there. The prices were much lower for the same items than sur la table. Seasonal holiday display and items for the holidays. The window displays are always fun to see. The windows change out often. While moving into our temporary home, we needed some last minute repair and adaptation items, and found out that Friedman Brothers was closed. Undaunted, we jumped onto Yelp and found this Ace hardware and drove right over. People that work here are super friendly and really helpful. I was really impressed with how many people behind the counter and roving about the store were enthusiastically trying to help me with my various challenges and helping me think up out of the box solutions to my problems. The store is an awesome conglomeration of basic home improvement and repair selections as well as a very quaint and inclusive home decor/local purveyor purchases. I was able to pick up an awesome looking French press for hubby in a great color and an awesome innovative style along with all of my other purchases that I needed anyway. I felt like the prices were a little high compared to what I'm used to in comparison to like home Depot or Lowe's but I was willing to pay that difference for the personalized service and the small town feel of supporting a local business rather than a big box store. I'll definitely be back and I'm glad to know that this Ace hardware is so helpful and accessible, with easy offsite parking and inclusive hours for people doing projects early as well as late. read more

When I grew up back in the 70s and 80s, my little home town had a locally owned hardware store. It had everything-- fishing tackle, huge bins of bits and bolts, cool gadgets, tools and an endless assortment of batteries. But what I loved about that store, the staff. People who knew everything about everything worked there. No one ever said that's not my department. Sadly, that store is closed. Walmart and Home Depot killed it. But we in Petaluma are very lucky to have such a place-- Rex Hardware. I love this store. People help you. The sales person encouraged me to go online to Ace Hardware dot com and find exactly what I wanted, bring my choice vacuum cleaner to them, and they would order it for me. I would not be charged shipping. I did and got my fabulous vacuum cleaner in only 4 days. I love this place. I've been to this store a handful of times and have had pleasant experiences each time... until this evening, that is. Walking back to my car from meeting a friend for coffee, something caught my eye in the window so I went in to check it out. I first stopped at the 50% off table at the front door and flipped through a cookbook, contemplating my need for it. One of the two women at the register realized I was there and greeted me. Ok, cool. As I started to head straight back to the store where the window display is, I noticed I was being watched but I decided it was just my imagination. Nope. The older gentleman who works there had 'slyly' followed me back and pretended to rearrange the merchandise a couple of yards from me. From the corner of my eye I could see that I was being hawk-eyed. Not cool. I walked away to another part of the store, still near the back wall. He followed, pretending to do the same rearranging. Really not cool. I proceeded towards the card display because I remembered that I needed a card for said friend who just closed on a house. Flipping through the display, I found the gentleman now at the front of the store, not far from me as the two women began watching me as well. This store has a lot of great stuff in it from practical household necessities to cute and fun gift ideas. It's really a great place! However, my experience tonight has soured my view. It's been 20 years or so that I've had shopkeepers watch me as though I was looking to steal something. I completely understand the whole shoplifting threat in general and support small businesses in keeping a handle on the problem, but come on! I was in no way acting suspiciously or the like and I, quite honestly, feel (violated?). I will give them the benefit of doubt since this is the first time I've experienced this behavior here and I will try shopping there again. If it repeats when I go in next time, they will have lost a customer. This makes me sad. read more

I go there for the quality of the merchandise, the location, and especially for their expert, professional, and friendly customer service. I can go into Rex Hardware with a vague idea of what I need and come out with the perfect solution; or I can go in knowing exactly what I need and they will quickly point me to the item's location and efficiently ring up the sale. But I don't always accept help the minute I walk in the door. I like to have an excuse to wander around first and check out all the wonderful kitchen and household items. Of course, I haven't been doing leisurely shopping lately but I have made a number of purchases at Rex Hardware since March. I've purchased everything from a CO2 Detector to an outdoor storage shed. Every transaction has been a pleasure. I've ordered both through the website and over the phone. Their curbside service is easy and their customer service is as stellar as ever. I needed some basics during our Shelter at Home time so we did a phone order at the hardware store. The gentleman on the phone was just great. One of our items was not available online so he was able to locate it in the store. He spent time getting exactly what we needed and then took my credit card info. I drove over to pick it up and gave them a call since I was parked on the street. Out he came with my items, put them in the trunk, and was efficient. Rex has been a fixture in Petaluma forever. It's the place you go to when you have an idea for a project and you need advice or in my case when the idea gets beyond my know how. It's like my Dad or uncle are there to guide me with the right tools and knowledge. Even if it's a $.49 bolt , they'll take the time to show you what you need to do. They have just about anything you need and the advice is priceless. Also a good selection of kitchen items that make great gifts for yourself or others.
