I really wanted to like this place... I was so tempted to pay a second visit to Aromas (which I gave 5 stars) but thought I should try something new. Reviews likened it to Johnny Rockets and Five Guys and i truly thought it would be even better since it was right next to Aromas. WRONG! Pitifully wrong. Frozen burger (not fresh hand packed), awful blue cheese coleslaw with no blue cheese (great idea though!), thick tomato soup that my husband was convinced was Campbell's from a can (not even from a box!). We found this restaurant purely by accident while searching for a place that didn't cost an arm and a leg for lunch. Quaint family, retro restaurant. Nothing fancy just your basic menus, burgers, hotdogs, salad, shakes, ice crea. Very clean. You order your food, pay and sit down and wait for your number to be called. We all had burgers, which were done to perfection. On a whim we tried the fried pickles...can you say "AWESOME". If the line hadn't been out the door, I would have gotten another order. So good!! We were last here on Fourth of July but have been here a few other times we've been in Williamsburg. The staff are amazing. They are super friendly and attentive. If you've been to Williamsburg you know this is rare for the area. We have ordered the burgers fries sweet potato fries chili baked potatoes custard. It fits the bill of fifties diner food. We always carry out as we have our dog with us and we either sit at a table on the street or have a picnic in CW. No, it's not gourmet, but take it for what it is. Retro's has great fries and ice cream/shakes! Their burgers are decent but I haven't had much else on the menu. While it may not look like much, the food is always fresh, they will accommodate special orders and the staff is always very friendly. Great for a quick meal. read more

If you had asked me a year ago what rating Retro's deserved, I would have probably given them a 4 star review. Then I went back again today. I ordered a root beer float and cheese fries- pretty standard hang over fare. They gave me the float immediately. So, I'm stuck holding a slowly melting float while I wait for my fries to come up, which is stupid, because, hey, I ordered them to be consumed together. This would only be mildly annoying at best if not for the fact that my float is spewing a frothy mix of frozen custard and root beer all over my hand, because the Retro's float doesn't involve putting the frozen custard in the soda, but rather in precariously balancing a tower of custard millimeters above the soda. Hence, when inevitably the cup is moved even a centimeter from where the float was assembled, the custard and root beer come in to contact and froth comes shooting out of the sides of the cup. This is a longstanding problem at Retro's, I probably would have bother to come to Yelp to complained about the messiness of the float a year ago. But at that time, the stickiness of my hands was generally balanced out by the fact that everything else was pretty great. I can no longer say that. I received my fries in a reasonable amount of time, considering how crowded the place was. They were overcooked, limp and had MAYBE one pump of cheese on top. I say pump, because this is the comes-in-a-can variety of cheese. To be clear, I'm not complaining about the quality of the cheese, I'm complaining about the quantity of the cheese. If these babies were coming covered in gouda, I'd expect a relatively small quantity of cheese. However, when I'm order fries KNOWING that they're going to come covered in what can only be called "cheese substance", I expect them to be slathered in the stuff. And they used to come completely drenched in it, which was amazing. Basically, Retro's had the market cornered for slightly above average junk/hangover food. At this point, if I didn't have to drive there, I'd go to Taco Bell for my hangover food. read more

What a cute little shop. It's the perfect location for a quick, cheap bite to eat. Have kids and touring historic Williamsburg? Go here! The food is good old fashioned sandwiches, salads etc. , but the prices are very reasonable!!! Me and my hubby treked down and found this cute but a little expensive place. I had a hot dog and grilled cheese which were good and he had lasagna and chili cheese fries. We had sundaes for dessert. Afterwards we walked around Merchants square and a lot of people were out even though it was drizzling. It was a nice end to the weekend. read more

The food here was very good and the atmosphere perfect for a small diner. We brought a youth group and they were very accommodating to us. The prices were fair, but sneaky. Each item you get cost and they charge for condiments over two basic ones. Basically if you do a basic meal and watch what you add the price is a 1 dollar sign but it can go up to two. read more

They charge you 2.99 for subpar oily sweet potato fries-- and only a very tiny portion size for the price (as in 9 fries -- I counted). Would not recommend the sweet potato fries or onion rings. Next to Retros is another restaurant called Aromas. I looked at the menu of Aromas but my partner was more interested in Retro's food. Located in Prince George St in Merchants Square Williamsburg where chic, boutiques are also in the same area. Retro food is American, burgers, fries, shakes which is to me is uninteresting dish. We ended up ordering fried pickles (a regular in the menu), and chicken quesadilla special for me, and lemonade and meatloaf with mashed potatoes for my partner. Retro's interior design is quite similar to Johnny Rocket which confused me. Otherwise, we liked what we ate. read more

Retro's is perfectly convenient if you're touring Colonial Williamsburg or are in the area for other tourist attractions. We ate there for lunch (now mind you it is only open from 11-8, which we were disappointed about when we showed up at 9pm the night prior to get some of their frozen yogurt we had heard about). Regardless, it was a great place for a quick lunch. The lady at the counter was very friendly and the food came out fairly quickly too. My parents had the patty melts which were delicious and I had just the typical cheeseburger. We shared a large fry and treated ourselves to frozen yogurt at the end. It is rich, so save room for it! My Dad and I ordered the PB Cup and brownies sundaes and shared them....both were delicious. It was a great meal and kept us full for hours...I still wasn't even hungry for dinner at 7pm! The food and atmosphere were very disappointing. Everything is very greasy and anything you want to change is an up charge. There are no veggies on the menu to speak of, but that would have been ok except for the salad that was pathetic and then they charged almost as much for the dressing as they did the salad. Mediocre food. One size(what size they don't tell it's maybe 4 oz) burger cooked into a greyish matter. $3.79 with cheese $4.09. No kids menu. Very greasy soggy fries with canned processed cheese and canned chili $5.00. Skip this place get in the car and go somewhere else. I guess they stay open with tourist not knowing any better. My suggestions To them skip the cheap frozen burgers and make your own. Make your fries to order sprinkle with real cheddar and a homemade chili. This review is based on service received. We did not eat here, but simply went in to give their rootbeer on tap a try. The expression on the man's face taking orders showed he clearly hated his job. He was incredibly rude to the customer in front of us as well as to us. Nearly every remark he made was snide and unhelpful. Food was mediocre. The burgers have much to be desired. They are pretty small, which actually doesn't bother me, but the meat seemed like a prepackaged patty you would pull out of a freezer. It was pretty mushy and generally not that great. I ordered a baked potato with cheese and butter expecting shredded cheese but got a ton of processed cheese sauce. My first visit here a couple years ago was good. I remember the fries being exceptional. A couple of months ago, I decided I would eat here as wife was on travel. Bad mistake. First the cashier could barely speak English and kept trying to change my order to their benefit (money wise). She also refused to speak up even though I have impaired hearing from military service. Finally the grumpy cook/owner came out and got things straight although the hot-dog was barely warm, the sauer-kraut had an odd flavor and for the price, the hot-dog was a cheap Sysco tube of boiled tasteless fat. Fries were not hot either and differed much from the board-walk style I remembered. Got an over-priced draft beer ($5) which was the best thing. $15 for hot-dog, small fries, and beer (an $8.50 meal in reality) They had a good thing going...not so much any more. read more

The staff at Retro's is terrible and rude, they treat you like your 5. Along with the bad customer service the food is trash... I will never ever ever come back to this restaurant and you shouldn't either! Lastly, the decor isn't even retro at all and is actually modern but it's still ugly. :(. Great floats and okay good. We stopped for dinner on our first night in Williamsburg. Staff were nice and helpful. Food wasn't super expensive but for two shepherds pies and two floats it was over $20. For a place that has an atmosphere like a fast food joint it was a little pricey. Food tasted like a microwave meal so I wasn't overly impressed but the floats were good enough to compensate. It's not just ice-cream, it's frozen custard!
