Had a latte here made with oat milk because I can't consume dairy. Latte tasted great. Frustrated that they still uppharge for oat milk. Starbucks did away with upcharge for milk at least a year ago and some of us cannot drink milk. Thought they would have vegan pastry based on yelp reviews but did not see any. I'm a local. I live less than 4 blocks from this place. I could go to any local place - I know them all - and I come here for breakfast at least once a week. The location is perfect. Hohl is a block from Merchant's Square where all the shopping for Colonial Williamsburg is and it's literally next door to the parking garage. Park in the garage for 2 bucks and walk 60 seconds to Hohl. The service is great. It's limited - you order at the counter and they bring it to you - but it's always friendly and prompt. The prices are reasonable. It's not cheap, but it's not stupid either, and the whole experience is totally worth it. The food is uniformly excellent. Tasty, served hot/cold as appropriate, innovative and well presented. My favorite is the house muesli. Fabulous. The seating inside is kinda close and cozy, so know that going in: if you have more than one small kid, please do everyone a favor and eat at the picnic tables outside. I'm Soo happy, I swing by for some coffee. They make their own syrup and grind their own coffee. I ordered the Dingo Ice Latte ( warm note of honey, vanilla and cinnamon) I did add some lavender to it. It was sooooo delicious . The coffee taste ridiculously fresh( which I love!), I can definitely taste the lavender in it. It wasn't too sweet at all! I pair it with a pastry, Rum raisin. The cream on the inside was filled with raisins and the flakyness went so well. Every bite was a little taste of heaven with a sip of coffee. I truly enjoy everything I ordered. Came here to meet someone from Norfolk without having to cross the water. Let me say that Williamsburg parking is often a nightmare, but there is a lot in the way of fair-priced parking lots nearby. Everything we had, I would get again. The "chilli eggs" were great. The lamb was so good we saved half just so we could have it later in the day. The lattes were solid, too. For a place where you have to wait in line to pay and have your food brought to you, it is not cheap. But the prices don't feel like you're being gouged either. Just don't expect to get out of there with two people and pay $30 dollars. It will not happen. Also, don't expect quiet. This place is loud. Small rooms with lots of chairs and nothing to cushion the noise. My perfect visit: 1. Have someone order the food and find seating. 2. You go to the dessert place a few doors down and get a medley of treats. 3. If you're two people, order three things and share a bit of each. 4. When you're almost done, order two coffees to go then sit back down. 5. Someone will bring you your coffees and you can walk out with drinks in hand and snack on chocolate covered items as you walk back to your car. 6. Complain that you should have gotten the large coffee and didn't ask for napkins so your fingers are a bit sticky. 7. Drive contentedly home and talk about what your favorite thing was. 8. It has roasted chicken, arugula, roasted veggies (asparagus, broccoli, onion, and mushrooms, and corn), edamame, hummus, and a side of miso sauce! For my second visit to Hohl's downtown, my opinion of the food remains the same: it's all tasty. My opinion of the pricing remains the same: it's all WILDLY overpriced. My plate of scrambled eggs and a slice of sourdough bread was $11. My wife's side of eggs, which came served in a side ramekin, was $4. We are talking about food cost measured in pennies totaling nearly $17 with tax. The staff are always very friendly, but being friendly about delivering ridiculous answers somehow rings hollow. Today, we were initially told that they were out of the listed sourdough and were defaulting to the alternate side choice of greens. I'm sorry, but when you are out of an item, it is up to the restaurant to absorb the cost of making it right for the customer; it may be more expensive to substitute a croissant or other slice of bread, but when you have failed to provide a cornerstone of your menu, you suck it up and make the guest happy. They miraculously found more sourdough, but that brings me to my next point: it took nearly thirty minutes to be served what amounted to three scrambled eggs and a slice of toast . This is a ticket which should take no more than three minutes to prepare. When I'd finally did get the table, there was no butter or salt; we ate the toast while walking out the door because it was forgotten and we had to ask for it a second time. I'm afraid that the experience continues to diminish without seeing an increase in value. read more

This was a cute little café located by colonial Williamsburg. You can dine in for breakfast or brunch or you could grab something on the go. Prices are a little high, but I guess that's to be expected with the price of inflation. This is their 2nd location in Williamsburg-James City County and right within walking distance of Colonial Williamsburg. It's in a house and I don't believe it is handicap accessible. They do have outside seating on their lawn area that you wouldn't need stairs to access but would have to have a friend order your drink. Inside there is seating both upstairs and downstairs. You order downstairs and they bring you your drink/food order after they give you a number when you order. Drinks: I got a plain drip coffee that came in the cutest mini coffee pot with half & half and a side of their syrup (can't recall the name but it was delicious) I'm a sucker for a cute drink set-up so I would order this again just for the coffee pot. Service: everyone I encountered was extremely nice and polite! Drinks and food didn't take too long even though the place was packed. I was with a large group of 15 but we were able to find a space upstairs, and enjoy drinks and breakfast items. read more

A cute new brunch spot near Merchant Square! We arrived around 10:30am on a weekday and it was packed. Nearly every table was full, including an outdoor table. It took 25 minutes for our food to arrive to our table after placing the order. We ordered the veggie sandwich with added scrambled eggs, and an avocado toast. Both were delicious, however different than listed on the menu. The veggie sandwich was missing the roasted squash and cauliflower, but had a pickled carrot/cabbage slaw. The avocado toast lacked the pickled cauliflower, shiitake mushrooms, and asparagus, and had broccoli and portobello mushrooms instead. It was also substantially smaller than when ordered in the past. The size of your toast may depend on how close to the edge of the bread loaf your piece was sliced. Not sure if these were seasonal menu changes, or substitutions made due to produce availability, but either way I wish we had been informed of the differences while ordering. Absolute worst experience at a coffee shop here. It was parents day weekend as well as an art showing. The place was not ready for amount of people and did not have the help they needed. I waited 20min in line for a black coffee and then waited another 15min for my order to be completed. I think I was more than patient for the amount of time. One of the servers said on average it was taking 30 min to make an order. Had I known that when I had paid for my $5 black coffee I would not have ordered. In terms of vibe, it's the best coffee shop in town. The coffee/pastries are also amazing. But I've unfortunately had one too many frustrating experiences here in terms of customer service. Once, I came here with a friend and brought in sandwiches from another local restaurant. Before sitting, we looked for any signage about outside food and didn't see any posted. We ordered drinks and pastries from Hohl and sat down to eat. We noticed several others around us with coffees from different places and snacks, etc. I saw an employee side-eye us for a moment and watched them go to a manager to speak with them while pointing at us. He came over and told us that having sandwiches from a different place is a liability. He was mostly polite about it, but the employees seemed salty for the rest of our stay. This is one example, but I've had similar experiences since then with feeling like employees are annoyed by a customer's presence or questions. They also don't have a public WiFi, which is worth noting for a coffee shop. I hope you don't get this kind of experience at all and I'm just completely off!
