TL/DR: you're better off at big box stores or Marketplace/Craigslist. It literally hurts me to write this review. This review is for the material reuse sales part of the business. It used to be a reliable place to get any type of building supplies at decent used quality for a "this has definitely been used" price. Now it's wildly overpriced. This review is almost more for me to remember to stop driving down to Boulder to try shopping here. Example: selling the 15gal barrels they receive their deicing salt in for winter - for $15. Barrels seem to be priced at $1/gal now, even when they're deformed or broken. So expect to pay $5 for a 5-gal bucket, $35 for a 35gal can and $50 for a 55gal. Saw $45 for a utility sink made of the same cheap plastic as Walmart Adirondack chairs - not the older, indestructible molded utility sink type. Bent and broken rakes and shovels for $5-20. It's just wild. Pieces of pallets are priced as though they're new stock lumber, and they don't even list the lumber prices anymore (were they to have any, which they didn't)... with the way everything else is priced, there's no way I'll even bother checking. At this point it's cheaper and more reliable to buy new from Home Depot which is beside the point of this place and it sucks!! The quality of used goods did not improve in the past 2 years, so why the price tripled is beyond me, but it's not worth it. Bye, Resource Central. I really loved you while you were affordable. I absolutely love what Resource Central does, especially the Garden in a Box program. Yes, the plants are young and small (as mentioned by other reviewers) and yes, there may be plant substitutions, which you are made aware of ahead of time (pointed out by another reviewer) and yes, they will take a few seasons to establish (which is expected - the photos are of what the garden will look like when it matures). The plants are a steal based on what you pay for and the variation is hand-picked for you. Such a huge time saver! Last year, we purchased the largest Garden in a Box available to replace an entire side of our front yard. There were 50 plants and nearly all of them survived their first winter. We had to replace a few plants, but that's it! they are doing amazingly well and thriving. We purchased another smaller Garden in a Box this year for the front part of the other side of our front yard, and they are doing great as well (except for some rabbit and squirrel damage - we purchased some natural repellant which seems to be working). All in all, this organization is doing GREAT things and I tell everyone about it. I absolutely love the brochures they put together on the different plants, how to care for them, and what to expect. Also, the "color by number" charts on how to organize the plants is a huge help. Their customer service is attentive and super nice as well. Highly recommend! read more

Resource seems to have changed. There focus appears to be on making profit over actually encouraging reuse. Take a look at any section and you will see broken and unusable items for sale at ridiculous prices. They are charging for plastic containers that come with store bought plants. Recently we were misled when we were quoted a certain price on pavers on a Saturday afternoon. When we returned the next working day with a truck to pick them up we were told that were given the wrong price and that they were actually double the cost of what we were quoted. We have been going to Resource for years but have definitely seen a shift in attitude about what they stand for. They prefer to marry their merchandise rather than move it along to a new home. It feels very disappointing. When buying new items costs just a bit more it makes it harder to justify shopping here. read more

I live in Boulder, and have shopped at Resource for at least 20 years. It is unique, a fun place to visit, and always changing. For example, on the macro scale, part of the outdoor yard was covered in a giant awning (about 100x100 yards, 40 feet high) around 5 years ago; before that, while there was an indoor "showroom" for lighting fixtures and fancy appliances, most of the stuff sat out in the rain and snow. They are constantly cleaning out and lowering prices on stuff that doesn't sell right away, holding Saturday tool sales (where they have sometimes put out -- scores -- no exaggeration, scores, of tables covered with tools they stockpiled for the sale). Resource is divided into four areas - first, an exposed, outdoor yard, about 200x100 yards wide, where they offer cut stone, rough lumber, yard furniture, patio umbrellas, compost bins, all sorts of large plastic and steel containers, and generally weather-proof outdoor things. Second is the donation/drop off area. Third is a covered awning area, with gardening and shop tools, doors and windows, heating, plumbing, screws, smaller containers, toys, and smaller gardening items, like flower pots and watering supplies. Finally, an indoor warehouse/cashier counter with appliances, cabinets and lighting. What I especially like is that the mostly Boulder County people and businesses who donate items, often bring industrial surplus and vintage things you would be hard pressed to find anywhere. I've found a hand-forged Austrian ice axe, a British Seagull mini outboard boat motor, and a set of pneumatic actuators. There are plenty of good hand tools, like Park (Bicycle) Tools, SK, Proto, Powr-Kraft, even occasionally Snap-On. You cannot count on anything particular being there at a given moment, but the range is impressive. I recommend visiting for the experience, and if you're lucky, you'll be there when something you value (and many others may not value) is hiding in plain site on a shelf or table. The staff is very friendly -- Joe, Brian, Shay, Kylie, Kevin, etc. They have a hard time saying no to anybody -- just see how long some shoppers keep them there after closing time. I try to donate something worthwhile when I can -- it is more satisfying than leaving items at a thrift store, especially when the item's construction related. read more

As a small HVAC company, we have been coming here for many years for miscellaneous ductwork, and usable items for our business... Today I thought I would do the right thing and return with a trailer full of perfectly good items, most of which were brand new, only to find out that it would be picked through item by item and Half of it being rejected for one reason or another even though most of it is brand new or just about brand new. I went through a lot of effort to get it all together for them only for them to tell me that if the ductwork had any tape on it ..was scrap and they would not take it even though they are a recycling center. Got rid of my Kentucky bluegrass, and my outrageous water bill. Installed low water plants in my front yard with a wonderful pollinators from Garden in a Box. I have beautiful hummingbirds that are living very close and visit on a daily basis, multiple times. The butterflies are beautiful with their vivid colors, native bees are busy pollinating, with their docile industrious nature, and of course the birds are everywhere! Did my first garden in a box which was supposed to contain penstemons but to my surprise they were not - they were harebells. So now they are planted in the wrong spot and being disabled it is not easy to dig holes let alone dig new ones. Disappointed. read more

I purchased 2 different boxes this spring. I've got a pretty good green thumb so keeping things alive is pretty easy for me. With that said only about 50% survived. I thought the plants would have been bigger when I picked them up based on the photos on their site of the starter plants not the mature plant pics. but they were much smaller than anticipated. I've got pretty mixed feelings as I think if they did better it would have been a great deal, but with only 50% success rate it was more expensive than a nursery per plant. I like the idea but reality was not as expected. read more

We love the reuse center, but we love their water wise programs even more. We have purchased many garden in a box plants over several years- all have been excellent, high quality plants. We've used their lawn removal service with great results and we have a water wise timer/app we use for our sprinkler system they hooked up for us. I can't say enough positives! What a RIPOFF... They sell this "garden in a box" concept but you get some really measly plants that will take at least one full season to establish, the partner cities contribute $25 and you pay an average of $10 per 4" plant. ($139 for the "Butterfly Garden" version-15 plants) HEALTHY, VIBRANT plants this size are available for around $3 at any nursury or big box store, no respectible business would even try to sell these poor mutant plants. Probably the biggest shame is that they represent themselves as good for the community and have embedded themselves within multiple city conservation departments, even to the extent that these municipalities contribute $25 for each "garden". If they are looking for a fund raiser they should ask for donations and be upfront and honest about what they plan to deliver on this "Garden in a Box" fraud. I dont think anyone would complain if they supplied decent plants, comparable to what you can find at any nursery. I will post pictures if I can, absolutely terrible plants! read more

This last time I ventured to the exiting world of Resource, I got these old tin railroad signs that I turned into funky clocks, I almost bought a new toilet seat, but the salesperson said that I had to buy the entire toilet. Resource is an amazing reclaimed materials heaven right outside Boulder... I know it doesn't want to be, but it is still a little secret in the world of thrifters... Think of Resource as an adoption center for building materials.... The materials are deconstructed from barely used home, second home, and third home renovations or remodels and donated to Resource. Resource is an amazing refuge for old/used windows and window frames, bathroom and kitchen cabinets, doors of all sorts, wood flooring, ripped out stoves and kitchen cabinets and sometimes if you are lucky, lone toilet seats. The Construction and Demolition Waste program of Boulder's Center for Resource Conservation (CRC) helps scared building materials escape the scary landfill. CRC does this by making sure contractors have easy access to recycling the materials in compartmentalized trailers on job sites. The money earned from Resource goes in circles and pays for maintaining Resource itself and maintaining educational programs. In searching for some 8x8 tile for a decor craft project, I found the size discontinued by most manufacturers. I was referred here from a quality tile store not far down the road. What a place, used and hand crafted household parts, tools, all sorts of stuff. It is part of Boulder Eco-Cycle and attached to the lot that takes electronics, batteries and other hard to recycle items. I had forgotten that my contractor on one of my last upgrade projects had taken my old doors here. It is a large winding place and I was directed to a warehouse for the tile. Boxes and boxes of unused leftover tile from "zillions" of other homeowners projects were semi organized on large shelves and tables. They were roughly organized by size and color but it was still a hunt and peck operation. Unfortunately, the light is poor so color is hard to judge. Also, most of the 8x8's were at a level I could not completely reach and there were no step stools. Next time I will take my own, so I get to pick through the whole selection. Though I only needed one immediately, I found 4 random and different tiles that I thought might work so I bought them all to have a choice or to use for another purpose later. Flippers and bargain hunters pay attention! ReSource 2000 is an architectural salvage mecca. What's that mean? When homeowners, businesses, contractors or whoever are remodeling or demolishing their buildings, the contents that are salvageable and reusable can be donated here. They are then sold for cheap to you, the bargain hunting flipper! We just dropped off some Hunter Douglas honeycomb blinds, and were thrilled and dismayed: thrilled by all the products they had and dismayed by all the stuff we threw out from our remodel that could have been recycled, like our carpet and some truly hideous light fixtures that someone would have loved! Plus it's all tax-deductible since they are a non-profit. Some notable finds were table size granite pieces, nice windows, great carved doors, a back yard pond, toilets and sinks. I found a great shelving unit made out of black painted wood (I didn't even need to paint it) with 3 drawers for $20 and a night stand that had a ring in the top paint that could be easily re-finished for only $5, and a heavy duty, rubber boot tray with an ornamental scroll pattern inside for $2. What a deal! You never know what you'll find here. I've been told to wait a month and there'll be a bunch of new stuff... that they get stuff in frequently. It's a casual atmosphere. read more

For around the house, mirrors, dining room table, patio furniture. For my work, Slatted closet doors, lightweight metal shelves, and folding tables. It's unfortunate I had an unpleasant experience at ReSource because I support their vision and they offer a well organized selection of materials. Most visits I had made prior to my last one were pleasant and the staff was friendly. A couple years ago, I designed a structure for a client that incorporated a substantial amount of salvaged materials. I had purchased a couple doors at ReSource on my client's behalf, which they would hold for pickup for a few days. Due to unforeseen circumstances which included a blizzard over the following days, my client was unable to bring a rented Uhaul to pick them up until 6 days later. One of the purchased doors was missing when we arrived, so we went searching for it at (helpful) employee Mark's suggestion at the new location they were in the process of moving to. Upon arrival to the new site, my client and I politely approached some workers and explained our situation. They were unsympathetic and denied us permission to look for the door I had purchased. One employee (who I later learned after complaining to Mark was the head of the operation) was particularly rude and antagonistic and "had a lot to do," which apparently did not include helping customers. After further discussion, they finally relented and my client and I searched for the door by ourselves, ultimately not having any luck. Fortunately Mark let us use credit from my purchase on something else. My client ended up making large purchases on the rest of the materials for the project at more welcoming and comparable salvage yards in Denver and Broomfield, which is where I have referred all my clients to since. read more

I've been finding great deals at ReSource since it opened at its previous location many years ago. If you need material for a do-it-yourself project and you're open to finding it yourself from amidst their large inventory, then this is the place for you. Their prices can't be beat, and you you can pat yourself on the back for re-using rather than buying new. ReSource has a tool rental center. For a $25 annual fee you are eligible to rent their tools, and their rental prices are much lower than other rental centers. ReSource has made the process of donating really simple - just drive up and an employee will unload what you bring and hand you a receipt for your tax-deductable donation. I've always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. It's great to have this, well, resource in Boulder. It brings together people with excess material and people who need material. Both benefit, as does the planet. read more

The place in amazing, I find myself going here before every project. ReSource is great, and I love that they have a tool library. However, this review is on their tool library policy on "not holding a tool." I called 20 minutes before arriving to ensure they had the tool I needed. By the time I arrived, it was gone. I was encouraged to call ahead to ensure the tool is there, but what's the point if they rent it to someone else by the time it takes to get there... Seems like a waste of a $25 membership if you can't rent out the tools they say are available because they rented it out to someone else minutes before you arrive. :( read more

This may be a great resource if you want to buy something cheap - but not so great if you are actually donating. I was very disappointed with the customer service I received at Resources today when my husband and I dropped off left over construction material at their Boulder location. The young man who was helping us had an attitude that I can only describe as "bitchy". It is fine that not everything was accepted, but the manner in which we were treated actually felt disrespectful. After donating quite a bit of materials, we were not even told thank you. Unfortunately it is experiences like this that leave me feeling like I will not be a repeat customer.
