It's awesome that REI has finally opened on the East Coast (specifically Garden City & New York City), but I'm glad to be able to pay homage to where it all started. This is the grandaddy of all REI stores, with 2 humungous floors of every single item you can think of. There's a cafe upstairs, a climbing wall, a mini hiking contraption to test all the shoes out, hiking trails and mountain biking trails in the front of the store, and even a Ranger station for any hiking inquiries you may have. I've been to several REI stores, and I'm amazed of how many items that I usually only see online, to actually be stocked in the store. If you have a chance, check this place out for all your outdoor needs. The mothership!! The REI flagship store...why am I not surprised to find it in the PACNW? Surrounded by its own rainforest, complete with waterfall, mini-mountain bike and hiking trails and indoor hiking wall, this is the cathedral of sporting equipment. I'm a woman who dreams of one day having a gargantuan garage with its own climbing wall and enough room for N+1 bicycles, N+1 motorcycles and countless other sporting implements. I could care less about my closet. This is why I normally get lost in every REI I walk into....you really can get lost in this one. They have their own parking garage with first hour free and lots of on street paid parking. It is REI #1. It is the flagship and for good reason. This REI feels like a thematic experience with every way in the world for you to experience whatever outdoor hobby suits you. The cycling area, alone, is double the size of most bike shops I have been to and I would say I was blown away, entirely. This is the place you can go to find *anything* outdoor related (and then some). Don't let the large size fool you, though. Their customer service was quite good while I was there (even late at night when everyone was sort of checked out and nearing the end of their shifts). I just went in to get a yoga towel but, there's always so many other things that I find myself attracted to in this store. This trip I also found bike lights - USB charging Knog Blinder very nice! This store was designed for people who would rather do something versus the people that want to watch other do something haha. It's the opposite of Best Buy. There's never enough time to discover all the cool toys for outdoors in this place. I always think I will just be a minute and then end up paying for parking (Free Parking for the first hour). What's most amazing to me is the sales people that actually know these products. They are so good about explaining the differences. I know occasionally I can find something online for a few buck less but I will continue to be a REI customer as long as they continue to be so great at educating me and accepting of my returns:) read more

Water fall, dirt bike trail, rock wall... this REI has it all. It ain't the flagship store for nothin'... there's always help around (although mostly occupied by the hoards of customers). This is, without a doubt, the BESTEST REI on the face of the earth (sorry Denver, you're pretty good, but not as good as Seattle). As a general company, REI is always top of my list in terms of social and environmental conscientiousness. The products aren't always the cheapest (especially when it comes to climbing equipment) but customer service, return policies are second to none. Definitely can't beat this with a stick! The king of REI stores. I've only been in one other REI store (in Pittsburgh of all places) and let's just say this one beats it, hands down. The layout is really cool - you have a parking garage connected to the REI, but the walkway to the store is overseen by a mini nature trail complete with a small brook so you can try out your outdoor gear. If this isn't cool, I don't know what to tell you. REI the store is huge, you have so many levels of browsing outdoor goods. I did see some sale racks scattered throughout the store. IF you want really good deals, check out the lowest floor. REI has a forever return policy so you can return anything you want at REI - and the sellable merchandise is resold on the lowest floor. read more

What can you say about the flagship store? I mean, it's the flagship store! I have visited this REI a handful of times, and it's HUGE. The employees are always super helpful and haven't had any issues with any of them so far. I love that there is a little ranger desk inside the store where you can get any nature passes you need for hiking, SUPER helpful. This location literally has everything, including rentals. The parking is a little stressful because the garage is tiny and kind of confusing, plus this REI is basically in downtown Seattle, which is also a lot to deal with at times, but once you get in there and parked, the actual store itself is great, and I have always enjoyed visiting it! read more

Sorry REI, you deserve at least a five but....Came in after my bike was stolen and I had looked at all their sale bikes (for this store) online. When I came in I couldn't see any of the same sale bikes and was only directed to bikes 3 times as expensive. Bait and switch? Don't need an $1800 bike for my commute Was ready to strike but walked out. Didn't help to see the same bikes continue to drop in price online in the days after I left. Will continue to believe, but that felt a little too 'corporate' and not enough 'co-op' for me. I am certain a five star rating will come after a future visit. read more

REI's flagship store in Seattle is a place where you could get lost in camping wonderland. The store and its grounds are really nice to just hang out in for a few hours to take it all in. So many products to test out and purchase for your future camping, hiking and anything outdoors-y trips. We had the opportunity to shop their "Garage Sale" when we were in town as we are REI members and scored some really nice, gently used products at a discounted price. Love that their return policy is so great and customer service is on point! read more

Went to get some help with my snowboard boot foot pain problems and Jordan S. was fantastic. He asked good questions and was detailed in his approach to help us with my boot issues. He surmised that it my arch pain was likely to due with the lack of arch support of my insoles, instead of the boots themselves. Found me some great insoles that feel a ton better. But this place makes me want to buy everything from snow shoes to fire starters, and I've never used either. I did however buy some snowboard boots. Their 1 year return policy is fantastic. Because I'm an outdoors focused guy, I have visited a number of REI stores and this one is great. The first thing I noticed upon walking inside was that it's spacious. There are two floors filled with all sorts of awesome gear. The employees I interacted with were friendly and knew their stuff. They also had a decent sized "on-sale" section if you feel like bargain hunting. If you are hungry, they have a World Wrapps store on the 2nd floor. Not mind-blowing food but convenient. But do you know what is mind-blowing? REI's climbing wall! At 65 ft tall, the Pinnacle is the the 3rd tallest indoor climbing wall in the world. While people weren't using it when I visited, I still couldn't stop staring at it. Another cool feature? This store has enough outdoor square footage to have a woodsy offroad bike trail. It's not super long but still nice for a quick test ride. Even if you aren't buying something, check this place out. Good fun! read more

I went into REI today to grab some ski boots and some base layers for my kids. While we were in the fitting room, the sales associate asked us to leave and said the area was only for paying customers. This was an odd assumption since I was holding several things I planned to buy. While in the checkout line, I asked to speak to a manager to let them know about this incident. The manager came out and was like a deer in headlights as I explained. He had no clue how to handle the situation. Ironically, he was standing next to a "Black Girls who Bike" sign. I looked around the store and took note that they didn't even employ anyone Black or Brown, which perhaps should have been my first clue that they'd have no idea how to handle Seattle style racism. I was not aware that REI had a Flagship store. However, even before you walk in you can tell there is something special about this place. There are so many different departments with a huge amount of in stock products to choose from. While there is a ton of staff, it seemed like there still wasn't enough to help the customers. I came in for bicycle gear and was a little disappointed with the options that they had for cloths. There was a small section, especially compared to the amount of space that was dedicated for new bicycles to be purchased. That being said, I did find what I need on the clearance rack. What did I learn today? I was not aware that I needed a Yakima roof rack tent system until I saw it today. It is way cool! read more

If you like shopping at REI stores, you'll LOVE this flagship store. We were visiting Seattle, and we made this store one of our "tourist destinations", and since we have a two year old who loves REI, I planned to stay here an entire morning - five adults and one kid shopped here for over three hours! We appreciated their under-store parking, although I didn't like paying $7 to park there (especially since we spent $200!). We started out doing the short hike around the store, shopped a lot, my son LOVED the Jann Sport play structure, we ate at the cafe next to the play structure, checked out their garage sale (not impressive when we went, but i'm sure it's all about timing), checked out the rock wall and we ended the trip by taking a family picture in front of their massive fire place. We loved it, and it was an outing that completely satisfied and tired out my son for his nap! read more

I'm not very outdoorsy but coming to this REI makes me want to be!!! I've come here jackets for the whole family, GoPros, and most recently, backpacks! Having never owned a backpacking pack, I didn't know where to begin and was informed by friends to get fitted at REI. Boy, am I glad I did! First of all, the staff are all incredibly helpful and kind. They are willing to take the time to understand your needs and make sure you are well equipped for your adventures! An awesome gal named Jen spent a good 20 minutes measuring me, choosing different packs for my size and needs, stuffing the packs with weights and pillows, and adjusting the straps to make sure I was comfortable! It was such a great experience and although I didn't leave with a pack (couldn't find a style of pack I liked in my size), I now know my size and what to look for in a pack. On a side note, REI has an awesome exchange policy and if you pay a lifetime membership fee of $20, you get 10% of your purchase back as a dividend, get access to their awesome sales, receive additional discounts throughout the year, and get membership pricing on classes/equipment rentals. read more

Since the Tacoma REI didnt had the tent we wanted, they told us the Seattle one did, so since it was on our way we went here and got the tent. I like how this place you can try anything they have before you buy it! Nice that you can do that, the quality you get at REI is top notch as well- of course though you will be paying more then what you would pay at say Walmart or Target or Sportsmans but your getting better quality stuff. The parking though in Seattle can be a chore to find, and pretty much your going to have to pay for it- which is why I dont go to Seattle that much anymore! Friendly, knowledgable and helpful staff scattered around the store and they just have a good vibe so even with another customer it's very easy to strike up a conversation. I wanted a pair of very comfy, padded sneakers because I'd been having heel pain for months. I tried on a bunch of different shoes that Mickey suggested and in the end, the Brooks Gylcerins were the winner. Major outdoor enthusiasts like us were traveling through Washington National Parks and weren't going to allow ourselves not to visit the flagship store. There is so much to say about this place. First off, why is is we don't have a REI like this in California? Secondly, it's stunning from the exterior to interior and I applaud the visual brainiacs. Besides having to climb a million stairs (or take the elevator) up and down the stairs to find what you want, the flagship store had so much cool stuff and more. It even came equipped with a kids play area (OMG Brilliant!) while parents can shop what's in the clearance section. Nice thinking! What I liked about this store was that there were some interesting items you wouldn't be able to find at a regular REI store. I bought a really cool navy blue cap with a leather REI logo on the front and sandals on sale to replace my Tevas. On the other hand, we weren't able to find a whistle-compass for the boys, which was the reason why we came. Oh well. They enjoyed their play time after a long day of traveling and they couldn't be happier. COOL STORE! read more

I do understand with COVID it makes things/pickups a little more complicated, however, one of the women working near the walk-in entrance around 230pm was quite rude and condescending. Love the store, but this review is for the return policy. Store policy is that REI will accept returns for 12 months. This works 99% of the time...BUT...If I have the original receipt, and the product is in it's original packaging, I think it's punitive to not allow a return, regardless of the reason. I understand that there has to be a policy in place to avoid and reduce return 'abuse', but if the customer has a receipt and the product is brand new/never used, to not allow for at least a store credit is not customer friendly... read more

I been shopping at REI for years, great for my closet, terrible for my wallet. I just bought my first bike from them, and overall REI is now my go to bike place. To be succinct and to the point: Sales - so so, they could use more training and have a better understanding of their own products. Sales person did not know the frame material of the bike I purchased and could not tell me anything about the bike tires or if the shifter was the right type. I had to figure out my own bike saddle and how to update the handle bar grips. After I purchased the bike, the sales treated me like "ok, here is your bike - now scram!" Overall the sales seem to be ignorant about all bike items from what kind of bell to buy to anything about the very bikes they are selling. Bike Shop - these guys rock! They know what they are talking about, they give awesome advice, they are helpful and continue to provide top notch service after the sale. In fact, while purchasing my bike, I just worked with a REI bike mechanic who took over the sale because the sales person was so lacking in knowledge. I liked these guys so much, I took them my significant other's bike for maintenance and they did an awesome job for the price. This is a review for REI online shopping experience not its retail stores. I have been a REI memeber and buying from its web site for many years. I love the co-op idea and ways to encourage people to get out to enjoy the nature. However, my last couple online purchases have been horrible. The good news is REI always happy to take the items back but the whole reason why I purchase online is because I don't want to go to retail stores. I purchased a Saris bike rack. REI shipped it with just the manufacturer box which has no padding at all. When I got the package, I immediately noticed something wrong beside the box was half open, there was multiple shipping labels on the box. It turned out the bike rack was a return item which originally shipped to someone in Idaho. The bike rack was definitely used and there are couple screws and nuts missing from the package. Same thing also happened to a pair socks I purchased. Again the item was packed poorly. Because those bad experience, I start to purchase more from EVO now. EVO ships much faster and always double box everything I ordered. REI online really need to step up its game. read more

Flagship REI! What could be better? Trekking poles, skiis, jackets, climbing shoes, stoves, bikes -- anything outdoors related, REI has it. REI is basically a rite-of-passage for becoming a Seattleite. Everyone in the Pacific Northwest has ventured into REI at some point in their lives -- often leaving with sleeping pads, down puffies, vests, hammocks, two tents, and a receipt totalling over a thousand $$, wondering what just happened. There are four retailers that come to mind when I think of excellent customer service -- Nordstrom, Costco, Amazon, and REI. First: They are a co-op. This means they offer lifetime memberships for only $20 (WTF????) and being a member grants you 10% back in annual "dividends" (a store gift card or cash) at the end of the year (DOUBLE WTF???). You could also get an REI credit card which gives you an additional 5% back on all REI purchases. That means that the new $800 four season tent you've been eyeing for the past few months could give you up to $120 back in dividends. Second: the return policy. Though their return policy is on longer a lifetime one (you can thank their new CEO and ex-Coach executive Jerry Stritzke for that one), REI still has the best return policy in the big-name outdoor industry stores. One year, no questions asked, money back guarantee on everything, including their memberships. I've had jackets that didn't fit right, spikes that were just a bit too loose, shoes that fell apart -- as long as it was within a year, REI would gladly take it back. Third: their employees. I don't know what they're feeding these people, but everyone at REI always seems so gosh-darn happy to be there. I've never seen anyone so excited to size my feet for hiking boots. They're all happy to answer any gear-related questions you may have, or refer you to someone who can help. Fourth: The prices. While they mostly go off MSRP, this flagship REI has the occasional garage sale for members (check their online events page for details) and they will offer 20% one full priced item several times throughout the year to members. Members also do get 10% back on all purchases in the form of a dividend, so in WA state it's essentially like shopping without sales tax. Overall I've had nothing but positive experiences from shopping at REI. They do such a great job educating the community about the outdoors and getting people excited about getting off their couch to explore the natural beauty of the world. 5/5. read more

This is the biggest and the coolest REI I've ever been to!!! I didn't have enough time to check everything out. They have a huge selection of sporting goods for everyone. There's an indoor rock climbing area, mini waterfall and it feels like you're hiking in the woods. I saw some people riding bikes on the trail. I heard someone saying that their testing out the bikes. On the top floor is a small cafe, restrooms and even a treehouse kids play area. I stopped by this REI to purchase a Hydro Flask. Someone bought me a bigger one last year and I really liked it!!! The ice lasts a long time and the bottle keeps the water icy cold. Customer service is good, it's organized and clean throughout the store. Plenty of parking and the location is right off the 5 fwy. I can highly recommend this flagship REI store. read more
