I had an exceptional experience at REI while shopping for hiking boots. I've been a member for many years and of shop for boots in many stores. The salesperson, Aimee, after understanding what kind of hiking we were planning to do proceeded to measure not just the length and width of the feet but also the arches sitting and standing revealing a small pronation in one foot. She then suggested an insert to Provide support and resulted in complete relief from the rubbing and pinching experienced when trying on various boots.Aimee then proceeded to recommend a boots explaining the different design details between the companies. I came here for vegan hiking shoes. All of the Rei brand are vegan, according to the staff. Luca helped us out, and I bought a great pair. I also bought the lifetime membership for $30...and received a $30 gift card. They were out of what my son needed, so we'll hit up the other location in the valley. Super friendly staff. I spoke with several. Informative, and educated in their jobs/knowledge of equipment. Spendy...but that is the price of outdoor equipment, sad to say. We'll be back. read more

I spent a lot of time looking at bike tire pumps and a few other things and finally arrived at a decision, a team member let me know that all pumps on this shelf were $40. So I chose the red one, the rest were black. My total came out to be a lot more than I was expecting, turns out I picked up a $70 bike pump. The gentleman helping me at the counter apologized and said he'd honor the $40 price I was quoted. Wow, amazing customer service. REI took a $30 hit to keep me happy, and it totally worked. It's been nearly a decade since my last review of REI, and clearly things have changed, I've changed, and it's probably time to check back in. One of the things that developed over the last decade is... long story short... I can get gift cards to REI using points. It's not worth going into here (and they just changed the program, so that may be the end of that) but I've found myself on a few different occasions with some money to spend. I purchased my latest tent here, a backpack, a rain jacket, and a down jacket. That's probably not something I would do if I didn't get the free points, but I love the convenience of buying online and having it shipped, or being able to transact in the store. On my own actual money, though, I'm more of a deal seeker and REI may occasionally have the lowest price, but not very often. One of the biggest changes over the last decade is my use of REI for gifts. People love outdoorsy gifts. At least my people do. On top of my list? Socks. Buy someone a really nice pair of socks (I mean, top of the line) and watch their eyes light up. Great socks, especially in winter? You win at gift giving. I converted to Darn Tough from Smartwool and REI has a great selection. Darn Tough are not quite as comfy, but they are, as the name indicates, really really durable. I was burning through a pair of Smartwool every season and I still use the pair of Darn Tough I first bought in 2015 or so. You can also find great water bottles, stickers, or other less expensive camp needs like filter replacements, food, or gadgets that all make good gifts. Like every outdoor retailer, there's too much clothing here for my liking. But I get it--soft goods are where you make your money. I bought one pair of pants here (see points=money comment earlier) and while they're great, I'm just not looking to spend $90 on a pair of pants, like... ever. But if you have the dough, go head to toe. Staff is very nice. At some point, Craig stopped working here or I just never run into him. That dude would ask me every time I came in if I was a member. Nowadays it feels a little less Rah-Rah in here, but by the time I come in I've researched everything on the interwebs and know exactly what I want, so I don't need a lot of teamwork or chit chat. It's pretty good stuff here. You could spend a lot of money. Unfortunately, gear is very competitive and there's almost always someone offering a better deal somewhere if you're patient. But more and more I'm heading here for the little stuff, and for gifts, and I don't hate an hour spent touching all the hiking and camping things. read more

I absolutely love REI, have been a customer since 2005. Not much has changed--everyone still has that chill vibe and are still pretty helpful. Yesterday I dropped by to look at some hydration packs and found a pretty good selection. Since backpacking season is on its way, I was also shopping for a light-weight tent for more efficient pack building. Employees provided excellent advice on the selection. The only thing I hope will be improved is this location's item stock. There were many products I would have probably purchased if they were in stock, but the problem of low supply is not necessarily the fault of this specific location: the outdoor season is just starting to heat up. Love the painting of the local area in the front entry! Also love the local event listing in the front entry. Stopped in and bought bug spray for our tent on our way to our campsite. The staff here are so friendly and helpful. It's my first time in this store looking for birthday gifts for my sisters and this guy (sorry I didn't get his name) showed me all sorts of gift idea and how each item helped him in his outdoor activities. There's camping gear, snowboarding equipment, hiking essentials and all kinds of water bottles! I was planning to get a couple of gift cards, but he changed my mind. I'm also a sucker for "as seen on tv" products so he could've sold me on anything lol. I hope they like their gifts! This place has amazing service and a pretty good selection. Due to Covid delayed shipping a few things were not in stock today but they are so good about having hand sanitizer and wearing masks. I mainly shop here because their return policy is reassuring when I'm questioning buying an expensive item. I've only been to one garage sale but they are a great way to score deals. read more

We're visiting from out of town and ended up with a flat tire on one of our bikes. Stopped by the REI bike shop and they diagnosed the reason for the the flat even before pulling the tire, repaired it within minutes, and told us how to avoid it in the future. Great service! read more

I get there is a pandemic but can't there still be a little customer service? The employees seem excited to keep people out of the store. They're hours are worse then the banks. They say they are supposed to close at 600 pm now. I get off work and race there to give them money for a kayak rack. I can't help it I got a day job and have to work till 5. 2 nights I a row I am sent packing barely after 5:30 pm. The employees seem all to happy to prevent you from shopping there. Hey if I am in line by 6:00 or 25 minutes before, why can't I still get in? Not sure why there are people waiting around outside to get in for the lousy customer service. I get better customer service in the post office or the DMV. Message received REI you don't need my money or business, I will take it some place else. read more

We planned on camping at Arches National Park and we were flying in. So we brilliantly thought we would buy some of our necessities and have them shipped to the REI store closest to the Park. That way it was less that we would have to fly with. After ordering our freeze dried food, propane, hand warmers, etc. We choose the pick up in store option and delegated the Sandy store as our home store. Once the order was placed we reached out to the store to let them know what we were doing. They said they added notes to our order so everyone would be aware that we were flying in to get our items. When we arrived at the store, I was a little surprised at how small actual store was. Sandy is just outside of Salt Lake City and I expected the store to be huge in comparison to the Columbus store at home, but it was not. It was very underwhelming when entering the store. We made our way through the line to check out and let them know that we had an online order to pick up. The employee at the register was so friendly and chill. He had to kind of search for our order, but I never lost faith that he would find it. He was so kind and seemed genuinely interested in our trip. We enjoyed talking to him and we were completely thrilled that our order was able to be picked up at this particular REI store as oppose to flying with everything. REI as a retailer is worthy of 4 stars. They've got a great selection of stuff (although this store is a bit smaller than the 3300 S. location) their REI brand items that I've purchased have all lasted for years without signs of wear, their prices are competitive, and their customer service and return policy are top of the line. Everything I've bought from REI has worked out great for me. What makes this location a 5 star are the epic garage sales. Yes, they pretty much all have them, but this location has time after time given me the best prices on the best items. Maybe I've just been lucky, but here is a small list of what I've claimed from these sales: $20 REI Flash Pad - an amazingly comfortable sleeping pad that normally goes for $100+. I picked it up, not a single issue with it and used it on multiple backpacking trips. $25 Thermarest Neoair Pad - returned because it had a hole. I patched it in 5 minutes and now have another excellent sleeping pad that I've used multiple times. $60 Snowshoes - normally $200, couldn't find online for any less than $180. Work perfectly and used them on a couple winter hikes. $20 Slackline - normally $60+ and works perfect. and the grand finale, the reason I'm writing a review today... $8 Fitbit One - works absolutely perfect and came with all the accessories. No problems at all, turned right on and holds a charge, keeps accurate steps, literally in perfect condition. I've picked up plenty of great hiking pants and other random items, all in perfect or very near perfect for super cheap as well. You can't beat the prices at the garage sales, they are amazing. On top of that, the membership more than pays off for itself. $20 for life, 10% back on all non sale purchases, free classes, 20% off coupons a couple times a year...you can't beat it. We picked up our GoPro for $80 off with that coupon. Overall they are a great company to work with and one of the main places I shop for outdoor gear. Their employees are knowledgeable and helpful as well. That about sums it up. read more

My wife and I love the outdoors, but we don't backpack as much as we should. Sometimes, it's only every other year (like recently!) I'm currently trying to change that. We'll be riding dirt bikes one weekend and rafting the next. We have shopped at REI for a long number of years, though I certainly buy my fair share of stuff on ebay, ultralight gear cottage makers like titanium goat / kifaru, etc. and backcountry.com. As a result, we were in REI years ago when they gave us the hard sale on being a member and how awesome it was. One of the things they harped on so much? If you purchased gear and it did not work out for you, take it back no matter the time frame! How great for tricky to select gear like footwear, clothes and ground mats! I'll be the first to say that this system could certainly be abused. My wife and I have never done so in our eyes. The small amount of gear we have returned has been brought back with minimal use and usually within a month or so. I wear a wide and extra wide in many boots. As a result, foot wear is a try and hike affair for me. I picked up a pair from REI and hiked in them twice, one day hike and one over night trip. Since I live far from any REI and I don't feel the need to pay $25-40 bucks to ship them a pair of boots (I doubt they would pay for it understandably) I waited about 9 months till I could venture into the Salt Lake area to return them. The manager was somewhat of a jerk...As a result, they felt the need to school me on what I was probably doing wrong with the boots and gave me a lot of grief on the time period that had elapsed and of course about returning them. He never once said "no", but made being in his presence annoying as shit. REI wants to have it both ways. According to them, their membership (which they charge you for! it's not free of course) is the cat's pajamas and they will give you the hard sell to pick one up if you're not a member. But if in the off chance you really need to rely on it, they seem to give you a hard time. The manager had to school me on their return policy's new changes (which I told them I was already well aware of) and I had to politely remind them numerous times that this purchase was "grandfathered in". Trust me, I've seen a lot of beat-to-hell boots at REI used gear sales. Mine were returned with about 25 mellow miles on them, about 1.5 days use. After the hike was over that made me realize these boots were not for me I kept them in the closet until I could return them. As a side note, everyone else in the back of the store was friendly. The cashier was all right, but made a snide comment about the length of return, which i think was about 1.2 yrs. Luckily for me, I've scored a pair of military danners in wide that seem to be working for me now; on ebay, for $60 new. I'm thinking of asking for our membership fee back, which I was told we could do, at anytime, years ago. read more

I think REI is a great store. It's a little more expensive than other places so I usually wait to make purchases until they have the 20% coupons. They also have really good warranty/guarantee on their products too which is why I like to buy from them. Knowledge wise, most of their staff practice what they preach and are very active in the outdoors. Customer service is HUGE to REI and that's something that I really appreciate. And don't forget to sign up for the membership, you get a dividend (around 10%) of what you spend in year which is pretty cool! So although they are a little more expensive, they have some really good perks that make it worth it! read more

Although the REI in Sandy is a smaller store they still carry a reasonably large inventory of outdoor gear including gear for: camping, hiking, bicycling, skiing, climbing, and much more. Employees are friendly and helpful and never pushy. Prices are moderate, if not a little high sometimes, but REI does offers some great values with their own product line and by offering frequent sales and coupons. I shop at this store if I know what I want and know they have my items in stock. If I'm shopping for something and want options I will usually go to Kirkham's or REI on 3300 South. That's really the only downside to this store in my opinion is the size, because they don't always carry a big selection of products. read more

Pretty disappointed with the crew at this location. Usually REI is on point with their customer service. Actually, they usually bend over backwards for their customers, and do so happily! Which is something I always love about rei. Sadly, not in this case. I was shuffled through 4 different employees, who shuffled amongst themselves, and ultimately went back on their word, leaving me without the bike rack I wanted to purchase and wasting 50+ minutes of my time. Well, it's REI and it's basically the same as every other REI in the world, so awesome. So we were a few days into a major road trip. About seven hours from home on day 1 I realied that I had forgotten to pack my shoes in all the chaos of trying to pack a family of 5 for three weeks on the road and in the process manage to leave the house clean enough for realtors and potential house buyers. After putting 4 or 5 miles on my trusty flip flops boy was I glad to be somewhere I could find a pair of real shoes for all the hiking we had planned for the next three weeks. This is located in a sprawling suburban mall so it seemed like we had to drive back, back, back, way back and back some more from the highway to get to the store, but yes, tons of parking. They had the standard selection of shoes and I tried on many pairs so kudos to the shoe guy who brought me tons of shoes while waiting on at least three other customers. He was pretty quick and good at remembering who needed what in which size. (This was a refreshing departure from the Manhattan Beach REI shoe dept which seems to be chronically understaffed.) He pointed me towards the clearance rack where he had a pair of 10 1/2 Solomons - exactly what I needed! I loved my last pair of Solomons, so much that I still wear them 11 years in. Well size 10 1/2 is hard to find in most stores to many thanks to REI for carrying them. Also for having them on clearance! I did try on the current pair (full price) also as well as several other shoes but the clearance pair fit so well and were a more pleasing color. On the way to the register I thought I better check out their selection of kids' hats and maybe a quick trip through the clothes clearance racks because it's not often that I get to shop alone, since the husband and kids all decided to stay in the car (someone was probably napping.) Clothes pretty much picked over but did score a nice pair of shorts for cheap. Kids' hats were kind of expensive but that did not stop me - 2 of 3 needed something new, especially the baby, he needed something with a nice secure chin strap so he would stop throwing the hats. They only had tiny infant size or too big toddler size so poor kid, the hat is a little too big and falls over his eyes, but that's the best we could do. Checkout line moved quickly, good thing because my husband was calling me from the car to get me to hurry up. Bottom line, though, only four stars due to the "mall sprawl" and lack of hat selection. read more

REI is a great outdoor gear store. You will find just about everything you will need here. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. They will provide you with great service. I think the Salt Lake City store on 33rd South is a better store and the employees are a little better. The prices across the board seem kind of high here. Although if you really want to save money then you should be buying from backcountry.com. They have a warehouse in West Valley City where you can pick everything up after you buy it online. read more

The Sandy REI is the smaller of the two in the Salt Lake valley. They certainly don't lack in quality or service despite the smaller size. It's conveniently located next to Momentum and across the parking lot from South Town Mall. I've frequented this REI for years and have always been pleased with the service. If they do not have what I'm looking for they have either found it and had it held at the SLC REI or on REI.com. Don't forget to become a member! REI is a CO-OP and as a member you get 10% of your purchases back (minus sale items). This is great for any gear head who plays outside regularly! read more

I think their service is amazing. I went to their location in Sandy to pick up sleeping bag. The employee that helped me was more than willing to spend all the time he needed to make sure I got the right for me. I will say that the prices are high but that's because I don't know what to compare them to. I'm only going off of feeling. I have yet to try my sleeping bag out but I am happy with the purchase and experience I had.
