Totally into Redwing Cafe! They are super amazing, if not a little difficult to get to, even if you're driving. This was my first stop on my 'Last Days of Fall' mini staycation, and I'm glad I took the time to go all the way up to Seattle to go all the way back down here via the Light Link to bus route. It really wasn't as bad as it sounds, and traffic on Saturday morning is pretty minimal, making this popular brunch location a worthwhile visit. They are counter order and deliver your food, but please bus your own dishes. This place is clearly run by people who enjoy good food and a simple dining experience. There is seating immediately by the door and beyond. This is an old converted house not unlike many other cafes in Seattle. Redwing specializes in vegetarian foods, with some able to be gluten free or vegan. I came all this way for biscuits and gravy, so the food was easy. When I decided that a staycation called for mimosas I was immediately disappointed to find out they had run out. Seated at the window, I enjoyed the older neighborhood view with the changing leaves in the distance while I planned my next move. When my biscuits and gravy arrived, I felt like they had accidentally given my a GF biscuit, but I wasn't that concerned. Kind of wish I had asked though because I really hope that wasn't a buttermilk biscuit because it was dry and crunchy in some places. Thankfully they give you some delicious gravy to smother these in, so I dove in and destroyed that plate anyway. I would consider myself somewhat of a biscuit and gravy snob, and these would have been the best I've ever had if I had the kind of biscuit I was expecting. Either way, I'm very happy with my experience. Will definitely be back after seeing how accessible this location can be with a little bit of preparation. This is going to be a lengthy post, so I'm taking the time out of my busy schedule and write this to support Lore A's earlier review on this thread just to validate her experience at this place, and I am absolutely floored and flabbergasted with the owner's approach to the situation. Mind you, I just moved into the neighborhood not too far from this place, and I was excited to bring my friends to this place. I was THERE when it happened, and the details that the person (manager or owner) of the place provided under her review is fallacious and untrue at best just to save his face on how it really went down due to the discrimination that he inflicted on us. As soon as we arrived, we brought a service dog into this restaurant, and it imposed no harm whatsoever, and the service was very slow with one table filled. We made it crystal clear that we were deaf and we needed a paper and pen to write down our orders. The owner were dismissive of our concerns in providing accommodations for us to communicate clearly, and his attention were heavily fixated on the service animal. The owner came off as very pompous and very rude with his hostile behavior with his hands on his hip kind of behavior. As a deaf person, I am VERY observant, educated, and we kindly showed him the proof of identification that the dog was a service animal, and I clearly read his lip that he doesn't believe a dog could be a service animal for deaf people since the service animal, "to his definition", was left unattended and unleashed. It was just very transparent that he doesn't care about providing the accommodations and also neglected the proper documentation of our friend's service dog. I just want to give you a little 411 on the matter. Under ADA law, I will cite here "The Washington Law Against Discrimination (WLAD) includes provisions prohibiting discrimination against persons with disabilities who use a service animal to assist them with the disability. RCW 49.60.040 defines a dog guide as a "dog that is trained for the purpose of guiding blind persons or a dog that is trained for the purpose of assisting hearing impaired persons." In addition, you asked what kind of disability we had then we told you that it was against the law to ask that, but we still told you that we're deaf. It shouldn't be that hard to figure out, but you still FAILED to provide us accommodation to your business by allowing the service dog and provide paper and pen to us. Here's some info as cited ," -The business also cannot ask that the animal demonstrate its tasks or duties. -The business cannot ask the customer about the nature or extent of the disability, as this is private information" You did that. ^ You were taken back because the animal was unleashed, and I can say that's a fair answer, but the animal is trained for this type of scenario when it is safe to do so to be off-leashed so the animal can perform a task to accommodate the disabled person in a situation to where it's impossible or difficult to hold a leash. The dog entered your restaurant to support a deaf person in an unfamiliar surroundings, and your restaurant is very small. With your aggressive approach, the dog responded intuitively by her owner and pulled back to follow her owner outside, because the service dog did not feel the area was deemed safe. As cited "sometimes a service animal may need to be off-leash briefly to perform a particular task, or someone's physical disabilities make it difficult or impossible to hold a leash - in these cases, an exception may be made." It's just shocking because the reviews about this place is just flat up insane and good, but it's just to our dismay that we didn't get that kind of service. He doesn't believe that dogs can be a service animal for deaf people. We had our niece who can hear with us at the time, she knows how to sign and she heard everything. She overheard him saying that "what does the fucking dog even do for deaf people" out loud in front of everyone. That is when my niece, disgusted by his behavior, responded, "thanks a lot asshole." I think the owner of this place could use a bit more of customer training skills to accommodate his customers instead of gaslighting online and invalidating someone's experience and rights to have a service dog in her presence for her disability. This can become ugly in legal terms, and I stand with Lore A's experience and everything she said is 100 percent valid and true. I hope my review validates Lore's experience and feelings on this matter. I do believe an apology from the owner is due because I think that would be the most humane thing to do from an "abled person" by invalidating a disabled person's experience and rights to a service dog and accommodations. I just only wished that our experience was equally satisfying as others on this thread, but we just did not receive that at all. Very disappointing and inhumane for someone to belittle someone like that in front of someone. read more

Another great meal. The staff here are always so nice an the food is so good. I always get the Rainer Beach Breakfast. It comes with eggs, toast, and potatoes (vegan options for the eggs is tofu) and the staff let me mod it a bit to get seasonal fruit instead of potatoes. Their baked goods are great also. I tend to come to late in the day but I love their vegan muffin when I can get it. If not their almond chocolate chip cookies are great. They also rotate treats so I've tried an amazing vegan chocolate cake and a coconut cake. Yummmmm Not a super lot of gluten free treats but the ones they have are good. The almond chocolate chip cookies are gluten free and dairy free. The coffee is always great too. Never had a bad cup of coffee here. It's not a super quick process (like Starbucks when they burn the coffee to get it out quickly) but it's on point and delicious every time. read more

I was hoping for a view but I was treated with the best tofu sandwich instead. The Redwing TLT is made with small slices of smoked tofu which means maximum surface area for flavor. Vegan mayo also made the sammich super tasty. Good, perfectly toasted, bread. Mushroom Red Bean soup was broth-y but the red beans make it filling. I could taste the ginger and the garlic and the mushroom. Got a coffee for here. Decent. Hot. And unlimited refill! Parking is easy on a Thursday afternoon. Lots of street spots. Update: Came back two days later and forced myself to NOT order the TLT. The hummus sammich was also good. Just loved their bread and the way they toasted them. Customer service was on point. Seems like to be a very popular local joint. The location is easy to find, needs to be lucky for street parking. The place itself is very cute and nicely decorated. We came for their famous vegan biscuit and gravy and the Sticky bun. So after a half hour waiting in line and another half hour waiting sitting, three of us finally got all of our food. The biscuit and gravy were good, nothing more nothing less. The tea smoked tofu tasted like smoke-flavored Tofurkey type, not what we expected the homemade type smoked tofu. And they were very thinly slides, almost burnt, not good. My other friend ordered the egg sandwich with roasted potatoes. She wasn't in love with the sandwich, and some potatoes were under cooked. So, some basic stuff didn't pass the expectations, a little disappointed. But, the Sticky Bun will change Everything. This is the highlight of the whole meal in my opinion. The bun itself is pretty plain but the Sticky part was just so perfect for it. Not too sweet, just right. But is it worth to wait for almost an hour? I came here as a third wheel with my husband who was attending a business meeting here. Having already eaten, I ordered a mocha from Tristan, barista and employee extraordinaire. The best part? Tristan asked what I was up to and when I mentioned I'd probably end up chasing Pokemon, she not only got excited but she set up a lure for me! How great is that? It might seem like a small thing, but I thought it was pretty awesome considering that she basically gave me her lure. I'll definitely be back and next time I'll make sure I'm hungry. I stopped by Redwing Cafe as I am always looking for good vegetarian options around town and it was pretty much on my way to where I was going. It turns out that this is how I would look at Redwing Cafe generally (which, to be clear is good)-- it's not worth a special trip out of the way, but it is a great vegetarian option if you're in the neighborhood or passing by. I had the tlt, which was really very nice; the smoked tofu did indeed evoke the taste of a classic, non-vegetarian blt. Great job putting this together! Yay! Cafe somewhat closer to home. Ordered latte, chai latte, frittata, and grilled PB & J. My plain latte was strong, just like how I like my coffee. Chai has never been my favorite flavor but I felt it was underwhelming. Husband got the frittata and said it was really good, but the slice is tiny (which is ok for us). I got the grilled PB & J and was not disappointed. The hot grill made the PB oozy and warm, with the raspberry jam. Yummy! I wanted all their selected pastries too... One of my closest friends and I decided to catch up and go to breakfast today and she decided to take me to this place this morning. Let me just say that this cafe got an EXCELLENT rating on the King County food safety rating. It is a hidden gem in Rainier Beach, I must say. Walking in, you can already smell the decadent pastries that are proudly displayed behind this glass cabinet as you walk into the cafe. Loved the worker who greeted us as we were walking in, that was so nice of her. I could already tell I was going to have a good breakfast experience there. I like the menu. Very concise. I decided to get the Potatoes Rancheros because the description sounded like it was good AND anything potatoes, yummy! I was shocked to know when my friend told me there was a downstairs. I was like, whaaaaaaa? Sure enough, there's a basement! They even have a bathroom and mini kitchen down there. Got my food and I was quite impressed. Not too salty. Not bland. Just perfect for my tastebuds. I didn't even need the Tabasco that the lady provided me as the Mexican chili sauce under all the yummy goodness was sufficient enough. I would definitely order that again when I go back the next time. I also want to try the TLT that my friend got. It was a Tofu, Lettuce, Tomato sandwich and it looked very good! On the way out, we also got some mocha. I got an iced mocha and it was good because it was not too sweet like the ones you get from Starbucks. It was just right! I looooove this spot! We were staying at an Airbnb nearby and were looking for a good local place to grab breakfast. This place hit the spot! I got a pretty basic breakfast: eggs, toast, potatoes. The potatoes were delicious. The toast was wholesome, grainy and came with a delicious apple butter. Never had that before and was pleasantly surprised! The vanilla latte I got was pretty good! It went great with my meal. The latte was better than some other coffee shops I tried while in Seattle. I loved the atmosphere. This spot is very small but felt very cozy and, well, home-y really. The ambiance and feel seemed nice enough. Fairly quiet with a good amount of seating. Regarding the food - I got the vegetable hash, and the word that immediately leapt to mind was "uninspired." It looked like it didn't want to be there, so obviously, it wasn't going to expend any energy enticing me to eat it. However, it was a healthy dish, so I held my breath and dove in. The description said "roasted" veggies, but maybe the cook thought that it meant pan-fried with a little bit of char? Or maybe roasted for 10 minutes? We roast vegetables at home quite frequently, and certain things, like carrots, require upwards of at least forty minutes. So sorry, can't fool me when it comes to al dente veg. Very disappointing. Serving size was pretty small (lots of room to spare on a 10" plate), and the eggs were also on the petite size, barely covering the mound of tired veg - I didn't even think to take a pic because it would exude so much sadness. Essentially, if I were to grab a random assortment of older veg in our fridge that didn't make the cut for other dishes, chop it up and then pan fry it for about 10 minutes, this is what you'd get. Even the potatoes just kind of blended in with the rest of the veg. I was expecting nice large chunks of nicely seasoned potatoes. But nope, they were small and channeled Eeyore just like the rest of my plate. Lastly, I'd have fewer problems if the price were inline with the product, but this was one of the most expensive things on the menu, which is the worst combo of bad dish and high price. If you're going to sell something that's unappealing, at least price it accordingly. Vegetables are cheap - this didn't even have meat in it although it was priced as though it did. We enjoy visiting and supporting local cafes - however, I felt ripped off at this particular place. Maybe their other stuff is amazing and offer a great bang for the buck, but get the veg hash at your own risk. Definitely not a good experience. Years ago, Rainier Beach seemed void of a great, local, cozy neighborhood cafe (for all ages) to pop in for some food bites, coffee drinks, and homey vibes. This is a cool lil shop right on the border between Rainier Beach and Skyway/Lakeridge areas farther up the hills. It kind of feels cabin-y with earth tones of green and brown, contrasted by thick gaudy light fixtures with ambient light just right. The bathroom is a nice addition of contemporary, clean and simple. Service can seem to be hit-or-miss when they are rather busy and/or short 1+ staff; a few of them may appear a little bit stressed by this. If you're a regular, though, this is probably no biggie. Besides that, they're a chill, soft-spoken crew. I've tried a couple vegan options; let's see - a plain croissant, tea cookie, TLT sandwich, tofu slab sides, chai, and I swear something else but I forget. The croissant wasn't too good. It just tasted like a light fluff of oily pastry flour. The tea cookies are nice; I enjoy just simple and good baked goods (ohhh the nom'sszzsz). Their tea-smoked tofu is nice; it's not a wow'er but I appreciate them going for this since it's definitely not a common thing. If you grew up on the ol' BLT classics, this is a nice, simple, healthier spin on the classic (and perhaps a "new" future classic). The grilled bread from GCB is pretty good; any good quality product from the PNW that's not "processed to a pulp" is good in my book. Simple salad or fruit (melon cuts & grapes?) comes w/ the TLT; I usually pass. The tofu sides are great additions to your meal or include to go and be creative at home. I had a brain fart and don't recall exactly if they made an in-house chai w/ custom blend from Phoenix Teas and/or if they used Dragonfly. I used to love any and all chai before I went vegan (whole milk chai lattes were my old jam). But since the switch, many alternative milks just don't really fancy me; often times they just end up mediocre and okay. They use Pacific brand and I've found commercial brands like Pacific and Kirkland aren't that great for cafe-style drinks but perhaps more for DIY'ers at home. Oatly and Milkadamia are rising products growing around here so those would be good additions to try w/ their chai in the future. Seating variety aplenty; downstairs section via stairs only. A cool art selection seems to rotate and nice chill music usually plays. Looking for a parking spot? Note the bus stop directly outside and do not park there. read more

Went to Redwing today for the first time. I was pretty underwhelmed by my seasonal veggie hash with tofu. The veggies in my hash were undercooked and not very flavorful. The presentation of the tofu was so unappealing. The tofu was cut into long strips and laid on top of the veggies. The tofu (and overall presentation) would have tasted better if it had been cut into cubes and cooked with the veggies. My cappuccino was tasty and the espresso had a good flavor. I'm disappointed that Redwing wasn't better. I live in Columbia City and I have been searching for a decent breakfast spot. Redwing is not it. read more

For a Saturday morning - it was busy but it could've been busier. It looks small from the outside but once you go in - you find out there are two floors with ample seating. You order up front - the line can get pretty long and could make the entrance cramped but don't let it deter you, the line moves quick. They give you a number and you take a seat and they bring you your food. If you order a drink - pick it up at the drink pick-up station to the right of the register. I ordered a Hazelnut Latte - came in a glass cup with a sleeve, quite different but I enjoyed it :) It was yummy! I also ordered Roasted Potatoes & a Biscuit served with organic raspberry jam. The Roasted Potatoes were so yummy, ate it with some ketchup. The Biscuit with raspberry was pretty good. I also tried a bite of the Biscuit and Gravy which was a vegan biscuit with vegan housemade"sausage"and gravy - that's a first and I will say that it wasn't bad. Not bad at all. Our first time here and I can't believe we didn't visit this cafe earlier. We ordered the tofu smoked lettuce tomato sandwich, vegan biscuits and gravy and two americanos. I had the hardest time trying to pick what to eat because as a born-again vegan, it's hard to find an entree that's vegan or can be organized without sacrificing flavor and quality. The TLT was scrumptious and I loved the creativity behind tea-smoked tofu instead of bacon! The biscuits and gravy were delicious and unlike regular biscuits and gravy, I didn't feel bloated after eating, I love how non-greast the dish is and I liked the texture in the vegan biscuits. We also ordered pickled vegetables and it was a lovely addition to our meals. I firmly believe that most dishes are lacking in acidity and I liked that for $1.50 I was able to accentuate my dish. Recently started eating vegan and in Seattle for a visit. Needed someplace on a Sunday morning for coffee and breakfast with friends before leaving town. Redwing came up in a Yelp search and boy am I glad it did! Warm and inviting staff. Immediately made to feel comfortable and even given my Coffee to wait for my friends. I had the vegan cowboy pie and it was delish. My friend got the vegan biscuits and gravy and after tasting we shared! Another friend got a dish woh veggies, potato, and eggs. He loved it too. Finding a place in South Seattle that has decent vegan food is still uncommon these days, so I was excited about trying Redwing Café. The staff was kind, the restaurant was well put together (needs more plants, though!), and everything was clean (including the restroom). We started with some chais, and I have to admit their chai tea blend is one of the best I had. My whole group was raving about it, and we even ordered seconds. They even took the time to explain the chai blend, which I appreciated. The food was the only disappointing thing, and the reason for 3 stars. We ordered some veggie hashes with eggs, the vegan biscuits and gravy, and some biscuits with jam. The hash was a little bland, and needed some more varying textures. The biscuits that came with the jam were a bit hard on the outside and didn't have too much flavor. The jam, however, was delicious. The vegan biscuits and gravy was the most disappointing thing, and it was what I was looking the most forward to. The gravy literally just tasted like flour, and I couldn't even finish the dish. The biscuits seemed to be the same ones with the jam, and didn't compliment the gravy. A little rosemary or something might have helped, but I'm not sure how much. I discovered this little gem after staying in a nearby Airbnb and was craving breakfast food. The bright mustard yellow building made it easy to find. There was street parking right out front of the cafe. As soon as I entered, I was greeted with the aroma of fresh coffee brewing. I was immediately impressed with the vast menu offerings for being a vegetarian and vegan restaurant. The biscuits and gravy caught my attention first, I ordered it with the vegan biscuit. It was absolutely delicious and savory. The vegan biscuit was surprisingly moist and delicate! My far-from-vegetarian boyfriend really enjoyed the potatoes rancheros. Ok let me preface this by saying I am stupidly picky. I'm that kid who doesn't like anything. So it was with some trepidation that I learned Redwing is vegetarian but still boldly ordered a breakfast sandwich , cold brew and some baked goods. Well, my egg sandwich arrived on brown grainy bread that had the picky kid in me scrunching up her nose, BUT. Holy crap is that bread delicious. Like, whoa. My mind couldn't handle the dissonance happening. I don't like brown bread... but I love this bread and it's brown. What is happening?! The egg inside was light and fluffy and deliciously seasoned with black pepper. The roasted potatoes were seasoned with the 'orange' stuff places usually use to excess but on the Redwing potatoes, it was lovely. My coffee caffeinated me perfectly and has *restored my soul*, y'all. It went so well with literally the best almond croissant I have had in my life and the crispy, chewy chocolate almond cookie was heaven. The décor is clean and bright but not loud, and brings nature indoors with natural wood plank windowsills and old wood floors. So soothing. Even the staff here are so sweet and calm and welcoming. The experience was so pleasant that we actually had a discussion wherein we low-key decided that if we ever move out of Boston, we're picking Seattle so we can hit up this place on the regular. read more
