Ok let me preface this by saying I am stupidly picky. I'm that kid who doesn't like anything. So it was with some trepidation that I learned Redwing is vegetarian but still boldly ordered a breakfast sandwich , cold brew and some baked goods. Well, my egg sandwich arrived on brown grainy bread that had the picky kid in me scrunching up her nose, BUT. Holy crap is that bread delicious. Like, whoa. My mind couldn't handle the dissonance happening. I don't like brown bread... but I love this bread and it's brown. What is happening?! The egg inside was light and fluffy and deliciously seasoned with black pepper. The roasted potatoes were seasoned with the 'orange' stuff places usually use to excess but on the Redwing potatoes, it was lovely. My coffee caffeinated me perfectly and has *restored my soul*, y'all. It went so well with literally the best almond croissant I have had in my life and the crispy, chewy chocolate almond cookie was heaven. The décor is clean and bright but not loud, and brings nature indoors with natural wood plank windowsills and old wood floors. So soothing. Even the staff here are so sweet and calm and welcoming. The experience was so pleasant that we actually had a discussion wherein we low-key decided that if we ever move out of Boston, we're picking Seattle so we can hit up this place on the regular. read more

I cannot recommend Redwing Cafe enough. It's nestled away in a very unassuming neighborhood, rainier beach , but when you step foot through the doors you're transported to a place that is the essence of The Pacific Northwest. Very inviting atmosphere with an incredibly friendly and helpful staff. Vegan and Gluten free options are plentiful and the menu is simple enough to where you're not overwhelmed. The attention to detail put into the actual cafe is much appreciated as any seat in the house is top notch. Not to worry the food is not secondary to the great locale, the food is simply fantastic. I don't write reviews often because rarely do they warrant the time, but Redwing Cafe is definitely worth the time. read more

My girlfriend and I wanted to check this place out for brunch bc of the rave reviews, to support a small business in the Rainier beach area, and bc they had vegan options. I must say we were not impressed. The amount and quality of the food does not warrant the high prices. A dish that cost about $10 looked like an appetizer at best, and my dish in particular consisted of A LOT of onions which we all know are cheap. The coffee was just okay. The best part was the dessert, but it wasn't worth the price. I appreciate the vegan effort, but they need to lower their prices or up the quality and portion size. I got the breakfast sandwich with eggs, greens, tomatoes and chipotle mayo. The mayo was my favorite, the eggs were fluffy, and the toast was just perfect. I also got a chamomile tea and I loved the flavor! I loved everything about the cafe, from the food to the location to the decor. Its too expensive and crowded for my comfort levels on the weekends. I can't convince myself to spend $15 on myself for a cafe style breakfast--so I haven't stayed to eat. I got coffee and pastries a couple times...and those aren't really worth the prices being charged (especially when there's a woman talking loudly to her daughter about how she hopes NO ONE steals the last --whatever the kid wanted-- directly behind me...omg). Stumbled upon this little place near the Boeing facility. We were looking for a light breakfast because we had a very heavy buffet the night before and had pigged out on all the meat we can get our hands on. First off, do not come if you are looking for meat. This restaurant (although it does not advertise) is vegetarian only with local ingredients. I highly recommend the spinach frittata for a quick bite. They have all different pastries sweet and savory on display that they will heat up for you. They provide a very nice coffee shop kind of environment especially the downstairs area that opens up into a backyard woods. They are very creative in replacing the meat in regular breakfast dishes that you won't know it's even missing. I had the egg sandwich with a mayo based sauce and it was fantastic. Very great service! The staff were friendly and accommodating. One morning, there were low on eggs, but whipped up a delicious baked egg. The coffee is good, especially the latte, with its floral art designs. There is a large downstairs that can accommodate larger crowds. The cafe has a steady flow of customers coming in and out, so it does not always feel cramped. The ample windows gives great natural lighting to the cafe, which helps out if your are studying or working. Check out the artwork in the restroom, gives a hint of local art. read more

Seeing as this cafe just hit the five year mark, I thought I'd come back to update my review. In short, this cafe has only gotten better. It's become the center of the Rainier Beach community. Great things happening. Can't say enough good things about the atmosphere, food, and people. The menu has expanded and is as delicious as the day it opened. I love this new café I just discovered this week. They have a nice selection of gluten-free sandwiches and bakery items. I love their "TLT" Sandwich and Harambe Salad. My dining partner who considers herself a grilled cheese aficionado claims that this is the best grilled cheese sandwich she's ever had. She is also a self-proclaimed coffee snob and states that the Americano had the perfect amount of Crema. I came across this cafe while looking for vegan brunch spots and I'm so happy that i went! The service was amazing, it seems like it's a family business which was really cute. The woman working there offered me some soy chai because she had made extra, and she also asked if i wanted a side of avocado for my potato rancheros. One of the men working there also got my sister and I napkins and utensils since we had not gone to get them ourselves yet. Unfortunately, RedWing Café is not dog friendly. I had a dream in my head that this could be a regular stop on my morning dog walks for a quick "to-go" cup. Alas, that dream has been dashed: upon walking through the door with my mild mannered best friend, I was told dogs weren't allowed and that I would need to tie him outside. Disappointing, as this was my second visit to RedWing café and my hopes were high this could be a regular thing. I dutifully tied my pooch outside, grabbed a cup, and dejectedly walked home - my dog's accusing eyes expressing his displeasure at my patronage of such a discriminatory establishment. The Starbucks in Safeway just a few blocks away and doesn't have this policy, so I guess I'll continue to "buy local" from Howard and skip out on what looked like an excellent neighborhood coffee spot. TL:DR Coffee is good, but not being pet friendly is a deal breaker for me. read more

This is just a great little cafe serves up vegetarian meals. However, everyone should go here to eat. The portions are generous. The flavors are well balanced. You will leave full, but wanting to revisit because the food is just so darn tasty. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. The solid wood slab tables draw you in. The mismatched chairs are solid and charming. You order at the counter and take a seat, but that doesn't mean that the friendly staff forgets about you. On the contrary, they check on their patrons, making sure that the food is good and that they are happy. The biscuits and gravy are the stand-out breakfast item. The buttermilk biscuits are delicious, with just the right amount of browning on the bottom. It's apparent that they use well-seasoned pans and grills here. It's impossible to replicate the flavors otherwise. The gravy is a cashew/almond base, creamy, and well-seasoned. Omnivores will seriously not miss the meat one bit. Vegan biscuits are also available to keep it completely dairy free. The prices are extremely reasonable, the coffee is good, and the pastry case is tempting in all the right ways. Seriously, go here for breakfast or lunch. You will not be sorry. It'll be the best $10 you spend all day. read more

Holy cow sticky buns. This is a great little space in Rainier Beach with top-tier home style pastries. I say "home style" because at first glance some of the offerings are less about presentation, which can be worrisome if Bakery Nouveau is part of your weekly routine. Worry not! The pie crust on their hand pies is buttery and flakes into a heavenly mess - I had a butternut squash stuffed hand pie. It was a really nice balance of savory and sweet. We also tried the coffee cake and the sticky buns. The sticky buns are the must-try item, but all of it was really good. Cozy neighborhood ambiance, too. read more

Lovely people, lovely atmosphere, great food, great coffee! I've been here several times and they always have vegan and gluten free food options. Their coffee is very nice - not as bitter as the roast at a Starbucks. They also have coconut milk and other non-dairy options. I have had the frittata a couple of times - very flavorful - they put in things like feta or tomato or spinach. I also tried the sticky bun, which is not gluten free - but it is like a bun version of a pecan pie, only stickier and somehow not overly sweet. Okay, it's pretty sweet, but not coma-inducing sweet or anything... They do have an air-conditioner, which may be a little chilly on a hot day, so I try to remember to bring a long-sleeved shirt to throw on if I'm sitting next to it. What a great find! This little cafe is not the norm for south Rainier Valley. I just happened upon it after meeting a client nearby. I needed a coffee shop to plug in my laptop. Normally, I would make a quick exit from the area and head back towards downtown or maybe to Starbucks in Renton but I caught the Redwing Cafe out of the corner of my eye as a drove by. I had an excellent, real macchiato made by a true barista running a high-end la marzocco machine. When I saw the staff working in the open kitchen I decided to have a bite to eat as well. I've been looking for a good place to sit down, drink coffee, and do my daily writing on the south end. I work in Renton so I commute down Rainier every day, and that 6 mile stretch is desperately lacking in a place to hang around early in the morning. Redwing is exactly what I've been dreaming of. Cute, cozy, a delicious spread of breakfast treats, solid coffee, and friendly staff. The art on their walls is dreamy right now - beautiful paintings of Seattle drives and the south end.
