It's Saturday and parking is decent on the street ( despite the fact people park in the clearly marked bus stop) when there is street parking - is this privilege? The vegan options at this place annihilate many of the all vegan brunch spots in town. I understand the chef at Redwing is vegan. The tofu scramble is incredible as are the biscuits and gravy. I love this little cafe! The coffee is great, the food is fresh, and the bakery options are plentiful. This cafe is one of my favorite spots in my neighborhood. It's got a cozy downstairs and a light a cheery upstairs. The staff is very friendly and they are happy to answer questions or accommodate your order. The WiFi is free and the food options for vegans and gluten free people is plentiful. I've had breakfast and lunch here. Everything tastes super fresh and is made to order. Redwing Cafe is a great local breakfast place in Rainier Valley. Somewhat close to a Seattle Public Library branch, it honestly doesn't look like much from the outside. However, in the inside, it's a charming place to share brunch and coffee with friends. The customer service was good, and the two staff members were friendly (if not a bit more quiet and reserved). The food items are hearty and my meal was substantial enough to make my trip to the south side worth it. Though the menu was relatively small, I ordered a latte (~$3/$4) and their Rainier breakfast ($9), which included two fried eggs, flavorfully seasoned cubed potatoes that were browned nicely, and a homemade biscuit. The biscuit was slightly dry and a bit too crumbly on it's own, but lathered with butter and their jam (which was life to me!), it was a tasty combo. read more

Woke up to notification from a Yelp that this was a brunch place near me that I should try. I'm always down for a good brunch, so I got up, got dressed, and made my way to this suggestion. Parking is not fun because it's all street options. The atmosphere was a little awkward but the food was good. Absolutely get the avocado toast. As far as price go, it's way too pricey for the portions. The mimosas were 6.50 each and they were barely medium sized. I'm. It disappointed but I'm not that impressed either. I feel indifferent. Will never come here again. I ordered a sandwich to-go because I was in a rush and then realized I had an extra second so I sat down to have a few bites and take the rest to go. The owner came over to me immediately and confrontationally told me "If you're going to order to-go, I'd prefer you to just go." I was shocked. Nearly a month later, I had another opportunity to revisit Redwing Café and stay awhile. This time I convinced the husband to accompany me for lunch and even learned a faster, easy-peasy route to get there via the Boeing Access Road exit off of I-5 South. There was a line this time and most of the tables were occupied by singles, duos, and families with school aged and tiny kiddos. We ended up at the comfy bar stools by the window - plenty of natural light! After we had ordered our lunch and beverages, this gave me the opportunity to get a closer look at the café itself. Warm wood paneling, smooth wood countertops, eye catching and clever art (see attached photos). Nice slogan on their business card too, 'Earth Food for Earth People'. There's a modest chalkboard featuring daily specials and menu items like soup, salads, sandwiches, frittata, quiche. However, the big selling point remains for me is the pastry case. All the various baked items are made onsite and today it was coaxing me to focus on cookies. The sticky buns others have written about continue to elude me. But onward to what was ordered: Beverages: Two 12 ounce mochas ($4 each) - again, nicely done with a rich chocolate finish Lunch Selections: Cauliflower and Tomato Quiche slice ($3.50) Smallish slice, tasty overall, but the standout was the flaky crust. Hummus Sandwich and Carrot Ginger Soup combination ($7) Toasted slices of Grand Central bread with generous filling of hummus, shredded carrot, sliced tomato and lettuce. I snagged a spoonful of the soup - tasted nicely caramelized and sweet. Cookies!! (one each, $1) Pecan Crescent, Chocolate Cacao Nib, and a Gluten Free/Vegan Peanut Butter Cookie I liked them in the order listed. Cookies to Go - cleaned out the platter of 7 (75 cents each) The beautiful heart shaped, iced cookies. I thought they would taste like the Flower Power shortbread type cookies. The magenta-fuschia icing had a slight citrusy flavor. These made the kiddo happy after school and will be perfect later with some tea. We enjoyed our hour long visit before heading back north. Excellent food. Excellent service. A great outdoor space full of charm and built sustainably with found materials. What's not to like?

I'm rating this for the coffee, tea, and pastry case, but it's clear from the onslaught of people that the kitchen is just as good as the coffee and sweets end of the counter. It's a little space with funky sides and ends, wrapping a few tables here and there in between a kitchen and a staircase. The front counter is where the line forms (seems like it goes down the block sometimes, I'd bet), and you move past the coffee stand, the tall case of baked delights, and the semi-open kitchen. The coffees are tried and true favorites made with love, lots of espressos and lattes and that kinda business. There were no fancy pour-overs or astro-calibrated thermometers that I noticed. The pastry case is equally focused on classics, full of scones and coffee cakes and croissants and such. Lots of egg dishes and other quick bites coming out of the kitchen. I can vouch for the coffee cake and the croissant, which were both as good as any others I've tried. Perfectly light and flaky, just the right amount of moisture, nice balance of sweetness and some savory notes too. The Americano was beautifully smooth and easy to finish; the chai was a bit sweet, though probably fine for most chai lovers. Prices were good, and you couldn't ask for nicer, sweeter people running the place. Great local crowds of friendly neighbors. It's fairly rare I am all the way in Rainier Beach hankering for coffee, but this is a clear choice next time I'm in that condition. read more

Tucked inside a Rainier Beach neighborhood is this cute vegetarian restaurant. I'm a carnivore and I approve. I arrived at 10am and it was fairly empty. They have some pastries at the front and I couldn't help but to get an almond croissant which is one of my favorite pastries. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with potatoes. My friend got the vegan biscuits and gravy. The potatoes were seasoned perfectly with a nice spice. Breakfast sandwich was loaded with eggs, tomatoes, lettuce, onion, and chipotle mayo. The mayo was creamy and added a perfect amount of flavor to the sandwich. I sampled my friends biscuit and gravy and that was also delicious. I did not miss meat one bit. I would come back alone for the food but also the great customer service. I told the employee I heard great things from yelp and she was very kind and asked how I liked the food. I really love this spot and have been in a few times now. It's super close to work and that's how I'd found it the first time just driving by in the area. It's a very cozy spot, they do there best to save big tables for largest parties as opposed to internet moochers which is nice. They're drinks are really nice, I've enjoyed their chai a few times now. All there sweets and savouries in the case are delicious looking and many vegan options. They have the traditional Russian tea cookies to these birdseed looking balls. I've tried a few here and there, all very good. My personal favorite is the hummus toast, warm and fresh. They could do with a thicker sliced bread but other than that it's nicely rounded out by a small side of pickled veggies which are a great balance of sweet and sour. The prices are average for the area I'd say but with the vegan and vegetarian options it makes it worth it. Very hipster crew working here but nice enough. read more

This is a delicious cafe with options for all major dietary needs! We ordered the seasonal veggie hash with egg and the vegan biscuits and gravy. The hash was delicious with perfectly tender grilled veggies and a perfectly cooked fried egg topper. I smothered it in hot sauce and it was magnificent! The biscuits were flaky and warm, although a little dry for my liking. They were smothered in a savory gravy that didn't even make me miss the meat (I'm vegetarian, so I may have a biased opinion on that). I ordered a fabulous oatmilk cappuccino to wash it down, and a blueberry muffin for dessert. That muffin is my life. Tasty and fluffy and obviously homemade - reminded me of my mother's recipe. I'll probably return again next time I'm in Seattle. I may try the buttermilk biscuits instead to hopefully have a more moist and fluffy biscuit. read more

I am pretty surprised I have overlooked reviewing this place. I have been visiting them for quite a while and they do what they do well. The coffee is very good. It's not like a starbucks where you can get frappuccinos and macchiatos but they do have mochas and americanos, the basics of coffee using great tasting coffee. The food also is so fresh tasting. There are vegan and gluten free options all over the place including in the baked goods section. Gluten free cookies for a reallly good price! It's also a very good breakfast spot. Egg sandwiches, biscuits and gravy or even a pb and j. The house made apple butter is delicious. The staff is great and they are pretty quick too. It's way quicker to get coffee here than the nearby safeway Starbucks. read more

Since moving out of Rainier Beach, Redwing is one of the things I miss most. This was my go-to place to work - there's the small seating area on the main floor, or the larger (darker, but often quieter) space below. It's one of those places you go to where you immediately know you're in your friendly neighborhood cafe. The menu selection is a bit limited, but everything you try is delicious! If I worked there all day, I'd start off with the Rainier Beach breakfast (eggs + roasted potatoes plus toast or biscuit; the biscuit with jam was amazing!), possibly a piece of coffee cake if I wanted a mid-morning snack, and then the TLT (tofu, lettuce and tomatoes) sandwich with a side of Harambe salad (greens, carrots, beets, daikon, and pumpkin seeds) for lunch. I could taste the lemon tahini salad dressing just thinking about it!! If you have special dietary restrictions, this is a good place for vegan, gluten free and vegetarian options. The staff is so great...really chill and welcoming. They'd often let me continue working even after closing time, as long as they were still around cleaning up. I really appreciated that!
