Great little doughnut shop that I highly recommend, especially their apple fritters, I'm still thinking about them . They also have coffee which was nothing special, they offer a big selection of doughnuts and all very for very good prices. The employees are very friendly and treat everyone great. The only reason I'm not giving 5 starts is because the venue is sketchy, I mean I get they're trying to keep it authentic but having creepy clown photos is just strange and I really think if they modernized the interior it would be the coolest place ever. Maybe it was what I tried, I like crullers and these were soggy and almost wet, and I hate chocolate glaze that aren't chocolate but cocoa powder and powdered sugar. I tried a buttermilk bar! really dry and bready not cakey or crunchy on the outside, and I was there at 8am, so they should have been fresh. I thought the donuts at of all places Salinas Winchells was better, scary! I guess I will have to wait to go to Kamehameha Bakery for the best glazed raised donuts, and open at 2am,,,. I love this place! My parents would always be working, so during the mornings I would stay at my grandparents' house in Seaside. Every morning, my grandpa would buy a dozen of donuts for my brother and I to munch on before and during school! He would get us chocolate, glazed, jelly filled, maple, sprinkled and everything! I thought about giving them 1 star... but the fact is Red's is the best donut I've had in the Monterey area. Which is sad. They barely rate above Safeway donuts. In a pathetic attempt to be unique the donuts are made with a randomness that comes across more as carelessness than artful cooking. They tend to be very heavy with creams and sugar, but still miss the balance that actually produces that blissful wonder when you bite into a good donut. Their raised donuts rate better than the cake or sour cream donuts, but still not up to what I would consider "par". I honestly wonder how a dunkin donuts (and in any other donut market I hate dunkin donuts) hasn't moved in and taken over the market. Further note, if you must have a donut, at least go to the Red's in Seaside. The one in Monterey has it's donuts delivered from Seaside, so you get a bad donut that is now a bit old. read more

The original is in Seaside and the second is in downtown Monterey. Opens at 4am with fresh hot donuts... And there is a coffee bar in them just like back in the day. My granddaughter and I went into Red's yesterday ( Sunday Nov 10 2019) @ 1240 .Being a long time member of the community as childern we would on many occasions visit Reds when it was located in the now name University Plaza area in Seaside calif.As time went on I took my daughter to the old and new location and develop a at home relationships with the. past owners( sisters) who ran the donut shop. On the date & time mentioned above I took my granddaughter to Red's as we walked through the back entrance I noticed the worker behind the counter sniffle wiping her nose a couple of times on the side of the back of her hand..She continued waiting on the customer and never washed her hands. After she finished waiting on the customer she wiped her nose again and asked us what do we want..referring to donuts.. I told her...no, no, I decided not to get any donuts and walked out. The next day I thought about it and out of respect of the history and memories that I would call Red's and talk to the owner(s) and/ or manager and inform him or her what had occurred the day before...@ 1040am I called asked for the owner or manager, the person asked me for my name I gave it..Twice I asked her name she refused.She asked me what do I want.I told her that I was in yesterday and something happened and I want to let the owner(s) / manager know.She said she is the manager so again I asked her name she refused..I told her I didn't want to document what happened yesterday on Yelp because something has to be done I wanted to let it be known by the owner(s)/ manager so that it could be taken care of..She got very agitated so I said forget it I'll just document it on Yelp..she said go ahead.. Locals already know this is the best donut shop in the Monterey area ! Once you have reds, nothing else really comes close. They stick to the basic donuts you'll recognize with a twist every now and then. (I've yet to see them do the cereal or extra topping types of donuts) but they are soooo good ! I grew up on these donuts, the difference is in the dough. Its so fluffy and airy, just so GOOD! They usually have deals on the dozens. The service here was top notch; the employee who served us was super friendly and patient with our donut indecisiveness.
