I didn't actually eat there but our hotel gets donuts from this place and they are AMAZING!! Maybe the best donuts I've ever had.

Great friendly service! We grabbed some donuts here for a quick breakfast before the Indy Races this last weekend. We had walked past this place the night before and decided to try it. Donuts were fresh and delicious and didn't cost an arm and a leg! Will definitely come back next time we are in town. read more

What was once a favorite donut spot in downtown Monterey is now a sad disappointment. The quality of Red's Donuts has been going downhill for sometime, but this mornings visit was the icing on the cake. While our donuts looked pretty, they were chewy and majorly lacking flavor. And to be honest, it breaks my heart for even saying this, I probably won't return to Red's Donuts. read more

Do I love donuts? No, not really. But OH how I love Red's! I love it so much that if I lived on the Peninsula, I would surely have to move up a pant size or two almost immediately. It's just THAT quaint, nostalgic, comforting and deliciously yummy! It's located on ever-busy Alvarado but you would never know it once you step inside and (seemingly) step back in time. It has "local institution" written all over it in the most charming ways. The counter service makes mingling with everyone a near necessity. If you don't like friendly people chatting with you over your donut and coffee, then perhaps you should find another spot. Otherwise, grab a couple of these perfect little puffs of dough and a hot mug of joe and settle in to listen to the chatter. It's a perfect way to spend a foggy morning. Cash only but fear not. Chase, BofA and WellsFargo ATM's are just a stones throw away. read more

Seems like I got to choose from the bottom of the barrel. Felt very uncomfortable as the worker just stared at me, never a welcome at all. I left. Came back again as my husband wanted to try . Same uncomfortable feeling, never got suggestions or help. Brought them home and was very disappointed. read more

Very overrated. My donuts were extremely dried out. At 6 AM. I do not feel the reviews reflected my two experiences at this place.

Red's donuts was the perfect place to purchase donuts from for the donut tree at our wedding. Ericka and her team were very helpful with getting the exact order we wanted. Our guests loved them. Our only suggestion is to purchase more than you think you need - because they go quick! read more

Good donuts. I live in LA, so I have a pretty high standard for donuts. These are what I would refer to as bread donuts, not cake donuts. They have a little more doughy, chewy texture. Not bad, just different from what I'm used to. Staff was very helpful and friendly! read more

Even near closing time the doughnuts were fresh and incredibly delicious. The lemon filled doughnut was filled to the edges!

The donuts were good. Got a half dozen. A dollar a donut, good price. Woman behind the counter was super nice. The apple fritter was huge and delicious! read more

I worked at Dunkin Donuts through college. I made over 400 dozen donuts during a weekday shift - plus millions of Munchkins, dozens of French Croullers, coffee rolls, cinnamon twists, and eclairs. They sold for $1.99 a bakers dozen. So if you will trust that I know a good donut when I eat one, please enjoy this review. Personally, after working as a donut baker for five years, I never wanted to eat another donut in my life. Reds changed my mind. Too much glaze, frosting and sugar for my taste - especially now I'm a senior citizen - but it flakes off pretty easily and Red's makes an excellent donut. $1.99 a dozen days are sadly long gone. God bless you and may God bless Red's, their Seaside location on Fremont Street too! read more

Stopped in on a Saturday morning and there were already quite a few donuts sold out, but the ones we got were yummy. I had the coconut donut, hubby snagged a jelly filled and glazed twist and my dad got a maple bar. Prices were reasonable and the employees helping us were super friendly. Not much space inside to eat (maybe 6-8 bar stools), so I'd say it's more of a "grab-and-go" type place. Would definitely stop in again (or try their main location) if we are in the area - but maybe shoot for earlier than 10am next time. read more

I spent less than two minutes inside. This was my only stop on the morning of my departure. I was in a hurry to get back to San Francisco in time to return to work. The donut case is right there in front of you as soon as you walk in the door. The selections are pretty basic. I didn't notice anything really fancy among the selections. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly. I asked for a glazed twist, paid the man a buck and I was on my way. The donut (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/BSKzdTmdEVW9T1tZRJkkzQ?select=xkuVS4MBbwz6cBMqo7pjjg) was nice and fresh with a thick coating of sugary glaze. I had it with a can of Pepsi that I bought from the hotel vending machine. The super sugar intake was great; it gave me just enough energy to make it back into the City. read more

Red's Donuts - super sugary breakfast! - Donuts Near Me - Monterey, California

This place has some personality. Pictures on the wall behind the register of visitors and friends. Nice place for the people who work downtown to hangout before heading to work. Very small shop with 8 counterseats. This place has counter service, which I haven't seen in a donut shop in a long time. Very nice people who work here. Waitress always finishes a question with "hon". Tempted to order the huge apple fritter, but my inner voice prevailed, so I ordered a glazed old fashioned and glazed raised. Pretty decent donuts, the raised was light and airy, the old fashioned had a nice crunchy crust under the sugar glaze. Overall donuts were decent, but most of the stars go to the neighborhood feel of this place. read more

Disclaimer Alert: I've only been here once and even though my review doesn't look like a positive one, I'm still going to give them an extra star. So, here's my review... We found this place while vacationing in Monterey. Location was ideal since it's only a few blocks from our hotel and near our breakfast destination. I thought that the selection was scarce and my donut (Maple Cruller) wasn't fresh. But here's the scoop, we arrived sometime after 9 AM. For a lot of donut shops, especially the good ones, after 9 AM is a bit late if you are looking for a huge selection. I also didn't eat my donut until hours later, which might explain the freshness, or lack of. The only reason I even mentioned that there wasn't much of a selection and that my donut wasn't fresh is because I've been to plenty of donut shops after 9 AM and still got a fresh selection. But I understand and willing to give Red's another shot if I'm in the area. PS: I walked into Red's twice the morning we grabbed our donuts. I thought service was just okay on our first visit, but superb on my second one. Go figure. read more

Donuts tasted stale, as if left over from the day before and/or fried with rancid oil. They taste way different than the donuts I'm accustomed to in Texas. Also, they are small for what you pay. The shop is very outdated and dirty looking. Lastly, lady behind the counter isn't very friendly (smart mouth when questions asked and not very warm). I don't understand- are you looking to get business, or turn people away? Skip this outdated dump- Monterey has plenty of tastier pastry options! Below average 0/5 stars and a hard PASS! read more

Strolled around Alvarado street on warm bright, Sunday morning, knew that Red's Donuts was here somewhere. Found it, several locals were hangin at the bar drinking coffee and chatting with the waitress. She approached, smiling and friendly. I ordered a Maple Bar and a buttermilk donut. Both 5 stars, paid $1.60 and continued on with my Sunday stroll. N I C E ! ! ! read more

Fantastic Donuts this Morning! Would highly recommend. The dough was excellent and the choices of toppings were very well done.

You MUST try their donuts. I love them in all their gloriously simple deliciousness. When I feel like grabbing donuts for the office (or just myself), this is where I go; always a hit with everyone. They're open early, service is quick and friendly, and they have great deals depending on the day of the week. If you plan on being a regular buying them by the dozen they do have a point card... sweet! FYI, they sell them at ACME Coffee as well if you want your coffee fix too. read more

Small donut shop in downtown Monterey. We were lucked out finding parking out in the front of the shop. This place constantly has a flow of customer walking in as soon as someone walks out. The price is decent too. We ordered a few just to try. Two vanilla custards, one Raspberry filled, sugar donut and an apple fritter. The were so good. Too bad it was not hot. I'm sure they made it it at 6am! They ones with fillings were filled with custards. Loved it. And the sugar donut was not too sweet. The perfect softness and chewiness. And the regular coffee was perfect with donuts and especially for the price. They don't charge you for ridiculous price as the other coffee shop. read more

I've lived in the Monterey Bay Area for over 20 years or so before I joined the military. I've been around and I have never ever found a better donut shoe than Reds. This is one stop I always make when I come home. Seriously, the best donuts ever! Their sister shop in seaside was the place I grew up with but they're exactly the same. Lovin it! read more

Cute donut shoppe! Tasty and fresh! Friendly, warm and conversational staff. The proprietor is a wonderful 'young' man with many stories to share. Ask him about his marathon days. I hope his knee heals and he's back at it again. I had the best Maple Frosted cake donut (with nuts) in a VERY long time. Not since the fresh fried and frosted apple cider donuts at a local orchard in my childhood have I had such a tasty donut. Stop in, buy one or a dozen. You won't be disappointed! You won't be full either. A light, satisfying treat. read more

Best donut shop in Monterey County! They're serving fresh donuts, coffee, and milk 7 days a week. Very friendly staff and some cool artwork on the walls make this a great place to drop in and grab a dozen donuts. Addictive recipes.... sooooo delicious!! Maple & chocolate glazed are the best. Delicious donuts!!! The chocolate and maple cream filled were literally some of the best donuts we have ever had! Great prices too! At home we pay much more for crappy donuts! read more

Old heads from the Central Coast who order the chocolate raised will know the difference. There is definitely a change in flavor and density of the donuts and no consistency. One week the bread is dense, next its fluffy. One week the chocolate topping is too sweet, next week it borders on Ghirardelli dark. IMO, I believe they just say the word "maple" over the maple bars because they taste nothing but sugar. Best time to buy: 4 to 6 a.m. fresh and starting to settle. It's a nice empty drive to Seaside. If you are not from here, you may like the donuts. But if you've been here since 1980+, you may take two bites and toss the remainder. read more

Another Monterey institution. I don't much care for the shop in Seaside, though. Red's has the best donuts in Monterey. You name it and it is good. I would recommend their blueberry donut for something different. Personally, I am partial to their apple fritter, which is a monster! The staff members in the Monterey store are old-style and friendly. read more

The donuts are good but the lady behind the counter was not pleasant. She was rather rude.

Wow! These donuts aren't greasy at all and truly taste homemade! They are fluffy and hearty! I enjoyed the chocolate custard bar which was like a less expensive eclair! It has that old school vibe with the counter to sit, drink coffee and enjoy your donut. Very friendly staff too and affordable prices. Parking can be tricky later in the day, but in the morning it's not problem. read more
