It's exciting to see Captain + Stoker thriving and expanding their operations. I'm a fan of their 'main' Monterey location and I've been curious to check out the new spot in seaside. The spot is super cute and offers a walk up / to-go style setting. There is a communal table and bench out front but seating is going to be limited here if you come with a larger group. The service is friendly and quick as always and the quality of the coffee is top notch, just as it compares to the main location. The branding on the cups is also a nice touch and its reflective of the vibe at this location. They partner with local businesses to offer more than just coffee and when I saw they carried my favorite croissant (from Parker-Lusseau), I knew I had to add it to my order. Out the door price was $16- for my latte and croissant. Pricier than the major chains but quality is also much higher. I wish them success at this location which is a bit tucked away in an industrial complex (with limited parking) but I hope it allows them to reach further into the community and introduce themselves to a wider audience.

Super cute addition to the OG Captain + Stoker located in Monterey. This coffee spot is tucked away off of Del Monte Blvd in Seaside. This is a walk up, coffee window style shop with limited seating outside and no inside access. There was one bench that was communal and could fit 6 comfortably, 8 with a tight squeeze. I ordered the vanilla latte because I had to try their infamous home made vanilla syrup. My latte was balanced and flavorful. We decided to order the almond croissant that comes from Parker-Lusseau because it was calling our names from the pasty window. On the menu the pastry's have a range of prices so it was unclear what the cost would be. After we placed our ordered we saw that the almond croissant was $9.58. The almond croissant itself was delicious, but I wish it had been a bit fluffier. I understand there's a markup when a shop sells pastries from another bakery, but $9.58 feels pretty steep for a single pastry. Overall, I'm stoked to see this local coffee shop grow and will continue to support them.

Captain and Stoker just added another location to their PG and Monterey spots. This one is a small window service at their main roasting facility. It is a great addition to Sand City and a solid option for the prework crowd as they open early. I already saw a number of local business employees from the industrial area getting their coffee fix prior to work. The menu offers their usual coffee drinks as well as fresh made English muffins from a baker next door. The muffins were roasted with a slight char on them which added a good smoke flavor to compliment the sweetness of the jam and cinnamon sugar. Service was fast and friendly as always. There's only one picnic bench for seating so this is a more grab and go location but they do still offer 'for here' coffees served up in ceramic cups. You know it's fresh since it is attached to the roastery next door!

    Wonderful cup of coffee (latte)

We stopped for a cup of coffee before heading home. The macchiato I was told, is prepared the traditional way which is like 2 shots of mini cup espresso. I ended up getting my usual latte and bought a small bag of beans 1/2 caf. They didn't have much beans in stock besides 2 kinds. The place is definitely smaller than the one in Monterey, more like a large kiosk. The coffee was delish as the cup of coffee I tried several years ago. Moreover, the staff were really friendly and nice and informative. I should've bought 2 bags of beans, 12 oz, $21 per bag.

Honestly, everytime I'm in Monterey area, I always end up there. Their coffee is delicious and the workers there are always super nice and positive! I got a honey lavender latte and it was amazing (as always). The design of that location is also super cute!

this place is rad! was staying right around the corner in sand city and figured i'd walk to the nearest cafe. it's a walk up, with 3 benches and 2 tables so plenty of seating. they had a lot of options, including a vanilla matcha latte and banana bread slide that i got. both delicious! the matcha is super smooth and not TOO sweet, just how i like it, and with the perfect green. the employees were all super warm and welcoming, so i will definitely be walking over here again.

Visiting from Long Beach and found this spot on tiktok, service was the best and coffee is great!!

This place is a no brainer. Reliable good coffee with classic options and seasonal. Few tables to sit at with good music playing. Staff is quick and efficient with smiles. Thanks guys!

I decided to go the next day, and the line was more manageable and I found street parking nearby. The pastry counter is the first thing you see when you enter. You can also order food and drinks from the counter. There was seating throughout the space which was in a historic building. I got a few goodies to try which included the blue cornmeal cookie, almond financier and an orange blossom tea cake. I also ordered their seasonal coffee which was a honey saffron latte. The cookies, financier and tea cake were all delicious. The latte wasn't overly sweet and was even a bit savory. It grew on me. There were a few sandwiches ordered by other patrons that looked scrumptious. If I hadn't eaten breakfast already, I would've ordered something substantial. Hopefully, I'll return to Monterey again. If so, Alta will be on my list.

To say I am disappointed in the $70 Birthday cake my husband purchased is an understatement…read more He ordered a lemon cake with raspberry preserves with buttercream icing. What we received was a dry cake with hardly any flavor. My Mother thought it was just a yellow cake, she couldn't even taste the lemon. And she is an experienced baker. She made our lemon and raspberry wedding cake, that my husband was trying to recreate. The raspberry "preserves" were gelatinous, like pie filling from a can. Preserves should be a jam like consistency, only with larger fruit pieces. But sadly, this was goopy and artificial tasting. And the buttercream was greasy, not creamy, like it was made from Crisco shortening (not butter), sugar and water. It didn't even have any flavor (maybe they forgot to put vanilla extract in it?) Even the construction of the cake was poor. They clearly didn't put enough batter in the pans. Normally you shave the rounded top off to make it flat. This bakery just added tons of icing in an attempt to make up for the rounded edges. Which also meant there were barely any raspberry "preserves" in between the layers. And last but not least. When my husband special ordered the cake (in person) he asked for white sprinkles. When he arrived to pick up the cake, it wasn't ready. And they told him they didn't have white sprinkles. And offered to cover the entire cake in tiny rock hard pearls, that are typically only used sparingly for decorative purposes. Because they are so hard, many decorators recommend removing them before eating! My Dad bit into it and said it was like trying to eat buck shot. My Father has never met a cake or sweet he didn't like, until now. He didn't want another piece during his entire visit. My mother and I didn't even finish our first piece. To charge $70 for this 8" cake was just criminal. I would have returned it if I could.
