You can pick anything from their menu and it will be awesome!

Located in Pacific Grove, Phoebe Cafe is one of the best kept secret of this town. Everything here is good - guest service, the quiche, wine selection, the crowd and wow! even their electronic menu display is good! I highly recommend as a must visit when you're in Monterey.

This review is for the Sunset Music Series. They've changed things up a bit for this season. The event is now near the firepits with a lot of seating at picnic tables and four or five fires, a glass wall to block the wine and hosted bar. The chef is grilling up specials that change every week. This is my second time this summer and I am going to come back as often as I can. Specials like Beef Medallions, Watermelon salad, Flatbread, Corn on the Cob, and of course their signature S'mores kits. The acts are top-notch and free to watch. Local favorites like Mark Banks, Andrea Carter and Taylor Rae. I heard Taylor Rae for the first time tonight and now I'm going to watch her website for performances. She's like a cross between Stevie Nix and Norah Jones. We have an abundance of talent in the area and not enough places to see the acts. If you don't want the entrees of the week, you can purchase something from the cafe like cheeseplate, garden salad, etc. If you haven't been to this event yet, it's a must-see. Every Fri. through Aug. and I think the first week of Sept. People know about it and even on a cloudy and chilly night like tonight, there was a crowd.

This is a cafe inside a meeting hall in what used to be a summer camp nestled in the woods. We drove around for a while trying to find it, and then we walked to the dining hall and had to turn back. It turned out to be a little corner of a giant meeting hall that kind of looked like the lobby in The Shining. Rather than staying in the cafe, we took our hot chocolates and wine to the hall and chilled out on the leather couches and easy chairs for hours. Hours! It was so much fun hanging out in this massive living room. My friends and I wandered in from the beach, but the majority of the people there seemed to be gathering for some senior citizen conference. Cool! There were pool tables and a piano if you're into giving surprise concerts. The Pinot noir is TOP. The food was a bit expensive, but it's a literal lodge in the woods, what else do you expect? The pastries were bigger than the average human face. Yum. Loved it! And the views were beautiful too!

Nice little spot if you are staying at Asilomar Conference Grounds! They have quite a large coffee selection.

As one reviewer said, if you are at Asilomar Conference Grounds then Phoebe's is fine and the State Parks are trying to do the cafe justice in their own state park, limited, mind. There is much better in downtown Pacific Grove to be had- please see my other reviews for advice. This is NOT a destination spot for the food! Romance, intrigue, freezing from the beach, warm fireplace, the beautiful, historic setting and the BAR is why we all go to Phoebes. This small cafe is set in Asilomar's historic early 1900's lobby, the Hearst Social Hall, and has indoor and outdoor seating. A dog on a leash outside is fine which makes it a nice coffee or drink spot as it is next to Asilomar Beach. Asilomar beach is a half on leash and half off leash beach. it gets very confusing for the dogs... Several buildings on these grounds, as well as the setting for Phoebe's, were designed by Julia Morgan at the behest of Phoebe Hearst, mother of William Randolph Hearst. Julia Morgan also designed Hearst Castle. If you like Early California Arts and Crafts History this building is worth the hard brie and meh service to come see after a nice hike at the freezing cold beach, sometimes 4th of July! Yes freezing cold 4th of July. Bring a sweater. The holiday season is a nice time to come after a beach walk for hot chocolate or coffee. The temperature will be about the same as 4th of July and the last few years the chefs from the conference center dining hall have been making and displaying gingerbread replicas of some of the historic buildings in the lobby next to Phoebe's. A fun, free thing for little kids to see.

A great place to hang out, especially on a cold day, with the fireplace roaring and unlimited firewood stacked alongside.

Ask the Community - Phoebe's Cafe

Now open only 7am to 11am, if I buy a breakfast ticket when checking into Asilomar, what will be the food choices at Phoebe's? I cannot find this info anywhere online. Thanks!

I think they have a separate dining hall, 100 yards of so from the building where Phoebe's is located.

On a rainy afternoon in Monterey, we were wandering around Fisherman's Wharf looking for something…read morewarm, coffee or tea, and a cozy spot with a view of the water. After lunch at Sand Dabs, we stumbled across this really cute café, and it ended up being the perfect stop. When we walked in, the first thing we noticed was that they were making fresh taiyaki, those sweet, fish-shaped pastries. The fillings offered were red bean, Nutella, and Oreo. There's a small discount if you order two, so we started with the red bean and Nutella, and honestly, they were so good that wished we ordered the Oreo too...warm, freshly made, and really delicious. I'll admit, I've had Taiyaki desserts before and was never a huge fan, sometimes they're bland or overly sweet. These were different. Even my friend said the same thing, we were both pleasantly surprised by how good they were. We both ordered hot teas, which felt perfect for the rainy weather, and I was totally intrigued by their ramen vending machines. You pick your ramen, choose your toppings, place it in the machine, and it fills with hot water and cooks right there. A few minutes later, your bowl is ready. It felt very Asia-inspired and not something you see very often around here, especially in a café setting. This spot is the café version of their main restaurant, which I believe is on Alvarado Street (I haven't been there yet). The service was genuinely great. The guys working were friendly, patient, and took the time to explain everything to us without rushing. You could tell they enjoyed what they were doing. Because it was raining, it wasn't crowded at all, which made the experience even better. We ended up hanging out for about an hour, just chatting, sipping tea, enjoying dessert, and looking out at the water. They also carry Marianne's Ice Cream, so I'm already planning a return visit on a warmer day. And honestly, next time I'll probably try the ramen too, if only for the fun of it and all the topping choices. Parking around the wharf is paid. We parked in a nearby lot and walked over, which was pretty easy, just something to keep in mind. Overall, the vibe was fun, cozy, and relaxed. Great desserts, a unique experience, kind staff, and a really nice place to spend a rainy afternoon by the water. I'll definitely be back.

I thought the cafe name was super cute. After browsing the menu, I decided to give this place a…read moretry. It's the only place that offers matcha/taiyaki so I thought it was worth a go. I ordered the mango matcha latte, which was a whopping $8.75 ($9.55 after tax). I gulped pressing the "pay" button; part of me wanted to swallow the doubt and see if it was any good. TLDR: it was bad. I'm not sure what the mango is made out of, but it is not smooth like a mango jam or puree. The texture is like blended up unripened mango meat. I will say, matcha taste is there, but the entire drink was just extremely sweet and there was little to no mango taste, besides chewing on the chunks in each sip. It's as if the drink was purposely made extremely sweet to hide the quality of the matcha and fruit. I tried finishing the drink since I paid nearly $10 for it but I couldn't, and had to throw the rest away. However, the worker who made my drink was kind and seems very friendly. The interior is very simple and cute, and there is a nice view of the ocean from the outside seating. I just wouldn't recommend the matcha here. Especially for what I paid for, I am pretty disappointed! :(
