The Old Wayland Square (Vieux Carre) - boozy. Hit the spot. Deviled eggs - nice flavor. The bacon a nice bit of crunch and flavor contrast. Cobb salad - delicious. Came to Red Stripe for a 2nd time as my dad and I dined here last year. This year we had a good lunch for Father's Day. Service was great, super attentive and helped explain a question or two on the dishes. We started with calamari, which was on the small side but good. The calamari itself was not the most amazing ever, but that may be a product of seasonality or supplier, not the fault of the restaurant. It was nicely fried, with the fried coating dry and crispy (not oily or soggy), and not super thick batter which was good. The calamari was was served with some peppers and some marinara on the side. Good stuff! I ordered the Red Stripe burger which was good. Very melty havati cheese and guacamole. Burger was huge, maybe over 4" wide. It was cooked slightly over to medium well (ordered medium), but still very juicy and flavorful. Not the strongest beef taste, but not bland either. Instead of fries I got a spring house salad with dijon dressing which was massive, very fresh, very tasty. My dad ordered a salad with lobster meat which was also massive, and he said the lobster meat was fantastic. It looked like he got maybe 1/2 lb of lobster meat, just by my eye. We both were not super stuffed, although satisfied so we still ordered dessert. He had creme brulee and I got tirimisu. The dessert servings are small but good. The tirimisu was not amazing, but still was of high quality and tasted great. Overall would come back here anytime. A restaurant that seems steady in their offering, with a menu that can suit a lot of different food preferences. Nice location, good service, fair prices. What more can you ask for? read more

Had dinner with my amazing wife last Monday evening. First let me start with our waitress Kaylee. She gave us the best customer service experience in a very long time. We decided to share a Caesar salad, the calamari, and the short rib beef stroganoff. The Caesar salad was extremely fresh, and she has the cooks divide the portions onto two plates for everything. The calamari was good. I asked for a side of tartar sauce, instead of the marinara which she accommodated. And the stroganoff was heavenly creamy and decadent. After our meal, I excuse myself to go to the restroom, and I went up to the waitress and asked her about the desserts told her it was my wife's birthday week, and I chose the crème brûlée. She put a candle in it, and my wife was surprised. The crème brûlée was one of the best I've ever had. Normally, it's very busy in there and very loud, but it was pretty quiet and we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. We love the ambience there. I just had the best experience here. My dear friend who got great news about her cancer status, so that may have set the stage, but we never felt rushed and were treated as though we were truly valued. Our server, Sadie, was very attentive and funny and accommodating. I got short rib stroganoff and the best margaritas, patron, triple sec, and lime juice. Absolutely lovely. We sat there for 2 1/2 hours. We tipped accordingly, but the whole experience was amazing. Bro-in-law had the fried seafood platter, enormous, but he made it through not eating most of the fries. We had a reservation for 7:30 on a Tuesday. They were putting us in the back room, and we requested the front since there were tables open. I don't think it was unreasonable, but they said no and we didn't push it. The service we got after that was terrible, there was a bro waiter who made great initial contact, got our drink order, super friendly, and then just forgot about us. After about 20 minutes someone else came, apologizing for the long wait, and took our order. We never saw her again. Finally we got someone steady, a younger Asian woman who was nice and very helpful. But we were there for 2 hours. I like long meals, but this was because of poor service. The food: The broth in the moules was very good. I recommend the bread, it was also really good, though it came long after it should have. The lobster salad? Nothing special, could have been anything. The steak and frites was fine for the money ($32). The frites: Half our table had frites on it. They were all luke warm and soggy. They should have better frites game if they're going to serve them with so many dishes. Anyway, overall this place is over rated, we felt poorly treated. Looking back on our experience here, I have to say I was underwhelmed. There's a total lack of anything like this here in Providence, that is, an unassuming brasserie when you can have a "nice" dinner that doesn't require a reservation and that didn't ever encounter a microwave. The night we were in we ordered four different entrees for our four diners, along with an appetizer. Only one was truly delicious, and it was a dish of pasta with meat sauce. Everything else was forgettable, at different temps, under-seasoned and definitely not worth the price of admission. I had the braised short rib, which people seem to talk about and the waiter recommended. It arrived with the most peculiar texture. It was essentially a slab of meat with a piping hot, dry exterior from being reheated--and a cool inside. The sides, carrots and mash, had not been seasoned in any way. It was just a dud. I'll say this about Providence: it's strange that we've had so many dining experiences here, in the shadow of Johnson & Wales, that are so poor. This type of food--French brasserie cooking, which is all about things that are simple to prepare and hold for many diners across many seatings--is the core of almost all culinary programs. Omelettes and mash are like day one stuff. It's just a shame that this is what we have. read more

Our server, Eric, was excellent. It was our first time at Red Stripe and he had plenty of great recommendations for us. With its black and white tile floor, wine red walls and white table cloths it feels elegant with a relaxed vibe. Their French onion soup was perfect. Went to Red Stripe for my birthday, 6 people. Super easy to book, midweek dinner, not super busy inside. Easy! Pleasant! Loved our waitress, lovely, attentive, super nice! Few hiccups, still excellent. Probably my favorite style - attentive, sharp, quick. She made the celebration even more pleasant and I appreciate it. We were a larger group, and I didn't love the table we sat at. At least in my opinion. It was also a bit cold for me. Food: tasty... I am too spoiled after years in NYC, it is incredibly hard to impress me. I liked the muscles & fries quite a bit! Will come back but for an appetizer portion or to share. Short rib was tasty. Beef Stroganoff probably used the same beef, at least it looked the same. Ratatouille Ravioli looked great, will order them next time. Fish & chips - fish didn't impress me. We were disappointed with the red stripe grilled cheese, I thought it would be something special, but it just tasted like regular grilled cheese, didn't have any other flavor. The tomato soup was pretty good, nice and savory. Another one of us got the mussels and fries. The muscles she got were pretty good, and the fries. A very big portion, probably could share it between two people. Lastly, we had the veggie burger. Also pretty good but I got the truffle fries and they did not have any truffle flavor. I checked in with the hostess and she let me know some of the part was already seated and just pointed to the large dining room. I had to go back searching for my friend, for this price point of a restaurant I would expect a better experience to start. While our server was friendly I think he had too many tables and it just took forever for him to come over, then forever to take orders, etc, etc. We ended up being there way later than planned because of the wait. The food! My husband use to live right around the corner and he basically only orders the spaghetti and large meatball. He loves it! I think its pretty good, but don't necessarily love it as much as he does. We also ordered the lobster roll, they did not skimp on lobster, the sandwich was overflowing and tasty! Why did it take us so long to come here?! I've been on the lookout for a restaurant in Rhode Island that's similar to my beloved college haunt, Boston's The Paramount, and I think I just may have found it at Red Stripe! This unassuming and venerable Wayland Square brasserie offers a snappy menu of French and New American favorites, all at millennial-friendly prices. We visited last night for a late dinner, and even though it was midweek, the place was hopping! Luckily, the hostess was able to seat us in the main dining room, which was decked out with kitschy red vinyl booths and a cool black and white checkered tile floor that appeared vintage. The dining room is kind of dated, but it's very cozy and a wonderful refuge on a chilly fall evening. There's also a separate room which houses a full service bar and high top tables for more intimate gatherings. Service was pleasant and efficient - I wish I could remember the name of our server, because she was awesome! Don't worry, we'll definitely be back, and I will update the review to thank her again. She was great and added to the fun and friendly atmosphere! There's something for everyone on the menu, so Red Stripe is a good choice for group dining. We started off with some of their signature Mussels, prepared in French style with a light, garlicky broth. The half-order appetizer portion is only $10, and even if you share between two people, you'll barely have room for your entree! My best friend and I were stuffed after that! The soft sourdough bread served with creamy unsalted butter is perfect for sopping up any of the leftover broth. I wish the bread was served hot, though. That would have really made the starter remarkable! I also got a side Mixed Green Salad, which came with a dressing that was a bit heavy on the dijon for my taste. I think I'll swap that out for one of the other dressing options next time. I can't believe we even had room for entrees after such a generous and tasty appetizer! We both went for chicken in different preparations: I went with the Grilled Chicken Paillard and my best friend got the Roasted Half Chicken. I really enjoyed my entree, as the chicken was moist and flavorful, and the Spiced Butternut Squash side was TO DIE FOR! If you visit during the fall, you must get some! It was buttery, sweet, and comforting... I almost ordered a second portion! The Half Chicken looked good as well, but I prefer boneless chicken for ease of disshemblement on the plate. My best friend raved about the pan jus that was served alongside the chicken as well. Yum! We skipped dessert (sad trombone), but I definitely have my eye on one of their skillet cookies for when we come back! Instead, I got a hot chai tea from the extensive selection of Tazo brand teas, and it was a wonderful way to round out the meal. Bonus points for the presentation of the tea selection in a cute wooden box! The meal was actually quite affordable - totaling less than $60 for everything, and the deal of the evening was really the $10 Mussels, which you shouldn't miss out on! This restaurant is spacious. I had the chicken parmesan, which is hand breaded 8oz boneless chicken breast, served on a mountain of linguine, with house-made marinara, mozzarella & Parmesan cheese. This was a huge portion and very tasty. My husband had the baked french onion soup and lentil buddha bowl. The soup had lots of caramelized onions, Gruyère cheese, crouton. The buddha bowl has french lentils, baby mixed greens, sun-dried tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled vegetables, fresh avocado, hard boiled egg, dill vinaigrette. It came in a big bowl and the ingredients were fresh. I also had a lavender lemonade and unfortunately it was disappointing because it was full of ice and not much of the drink. read more

We had a very poor Thanksgiving meal here following a good meal the previous year. Inexcusable service was indifferent , bordering on challenging . We will not return next year and suggest this restaurant completely revamp their turkey meal should they decide to open next Thanksgiving. Fish and chips was standard, the coleslaw was super refreshing. They give complimentary bread which tastes great when dipped into the mussel broth. The Cobb salad was very tasty and refreshing as well - you can tell they didn't skimp on the ingredients. Also they're super accommodating with side replacements so ask!
