We left the Hi-Fi after a concert and decided to stop into The Red Lion Grog House, this small, quaint little bar nearby. Such a fun surprise! They had karaoke going, which we haven't been around in forever, so we grabbed a drink and stayed for a bit to listen. The lady sitting next to me at the bar said their fish and chips are delicious, so now I already know what I'll be trying next time. I have been hyping you up to my daughter for months. Finally got to bring her in and sh*t went sideways quick. We moved from a big table to a smaller table since there were only three of us, no biggie... We were given menus, specials, and told about the on tap menu. That was the last time we talked to anyone. We contemplated apps... we all decided on meals... we even picked out dessert. This place was insanely good! We stopped in on a whim from out of town and it did not disappoint. We had a cup of french onion soup which had amazing flavor, the loaded tots which had a really good spicy cheese sauce, and the fish/chicken and chips platter. The curry had a bit of spice to it. I liked it. My friend did not. The chip aka fries were good. Our dinner came out right after getting our appetizer. I ordered the fish and chips and it was excellent. The batter on the fish had a good crunch. It came with a small cup of slaw and tartar sauce. There was malt vinegar and other condiments on the table. One thing I didn't like was not the restaurants fault. Did you know 4% ABV stouts exist? They're as mediocre as they sound. After an unsuccessful entry elsewhere in the area, I found myself staring down the barrel of British cuisine. Hearty fare is a friend of mine, yet this one is chalked up as a loss. Hungry enough to maintain my clean plate club membership, sober enough to not mistake that for excellence. Onion ring garnishes only get you so far in palate pleasing. Volume was weird here. A medley of sound check and sitting way too close to the "stage" proved a muddied mess of conversation. Red Lion Grog House is next door to the Hi-Fi, a local music venue. I needed a place to "pre-game" and get a drink before a show (Broken Social Scene, if you must know), so in I went. This is one of those places that's dark and dank inside, and it's a little disorienting walking inside because you feel like you stepped into a different realm. And then, when you emerge after having your little drink, you're punted back out into the real world and blinded by the natural light of day. But while you're inside, Red Lion feels like a cozy little den. They have video games that you can play from the bar (Mario), and sports on the TVs and music playing. There are booths and tables, but also a long bar where you can sit and think, and is underlit with a red light. I saw some people around me eating, but I was only there for a drink, so I didn't even look at the food menu. The servers were nice and efficient, and the beer I got was cold and local. A buddy and I were going to a show at the Hi FI, which is basically right next door. We were looking for something close, quick and casual and boy did we choose right! The atmosphere was perfect - just a small bar with plenty of open seating, a menu that had some variety but not overwhelming, and the server was as nice and helpful as could be. Feeling like a bit of British cuisine we suggested this spot for a meet up with friends. They also have the added bonus of half-priced appetizers if you arrive between 4-6. Yay! We love a good deal especially if it is delicious! There are several tables near the door as well as tables lining the wall as the space is long and narrow. It doesn't feel crossed though but more cozy and friendly. Our server was helpful and nice and kept bringing us drinks even after we paid our bill (which is one of the things I often notice as a personal sign of good customer service). The menu is varied with some standard pub type options but with a British twist. We had their fries and fried pickle chips which were excellent. We got the curry sauce as well as some Barbeque sauces which paired perfectly. And I have to say the portions were large and more than expected, we even had enough to share with our friends! The various entrees were flavorful and tasty and not a bite was left of anything by the time we had looked up from our plates. It is very hearty fare so don't think salads and veggies but more things you eat on a cold night when wanting to be warm and cozy. But delicious! We have enjoyed this spot before and will again, so if you haven't tried it it is worth the effort. I went to Red Lion for lunch today. Matt, the bartender, was awesome! He was very attentive, personable and friendly even though he had to take care of the whole bar. This is only the 2nd time I have been here and it had been a LONG time. I asked him what he would recommend between the bangers and mash and fish and chips if he were eating and without hesitation he said the fish and chips. The fish was excellent! Flaky, juicy fall apart melt in your mouth fish and excellent tasty,,crunchy breading. The tartar sauce, lemon, and malt vinegar they provided really set it off. The "chips" were okay. I believe they are house made. Could have stood to have some more seasoning the coleslaw was good too. The atmosphere is still great. Looks like an old English pub still. Service was great and the food came out quickly for our dinner party of 8. This was an after work team event. I liked the dive bar feel but the food was lackluster. We shared Scotch Eggs and wings for the table. Tiny wings a bit over fried with sauces on the side. This was my first time trying the eggs and I liked them but didn't love them. Even with the pandemic, this place remains friendly and so quick with the food too. Of course they follow all the current health and safety regualtions. I took full advantage of the Yelp check in offer of free curry fries, which btw were absolutely delicious and such a huge amount of fries that I shared with the entire table. I also enjoyed the fried shrimp appetizer. Delicious, nice, crisp, hot and worth it. I probably could have asked for a little more of the aioli though. Red Lion Grog House is right on Virginia Avenue in Fountain Square. If you see the Fountain Square Theater look to the left and you will see the sign for the Red Lion Grog House. Fashioned after an English pub you will see a Knight standing close to the entry way. Very cool looking! They have televisions playing various sports games and the table above us had Harry Potter playing. Scotch eggs, bangers & mash, shepherds pie, fish & chips are a few of the traditional English dishes they serve. I chose the Hoosier Burger lol. I want to try the fish n chips next time but the burger sounded so dang gone good! It's not often you see a hamburger come out cooked to order and it has steam coming out it was that fresh. My friend ordered a patty melt and said the same thing. You just don't see a burger come out that hot and to your table that fast! The sandwich was excellent!!! Fresh onions, lettuce, a huge slice of tomato, and this sandwich had fried pickles also. 10 out of 10 for it! Let's not forget the other star the "chips" fries for us. They looked like they cut them at the restaurant. They came out golden brown and had the right amount of salt and were very good. I like ranch to dip my fries in and asked for a side and the ranch they make has some dill in it. It was so good I would've bought a bottle of it. The waitress said people ask if they sell it by the bottle. That's a good sign that it's good! Speaking of our waitress she was great. Very attentive and yet not at our table all the time. This was my second time to the Red Lion. Both times the service and food was excellent! The wait staff both times, different staff, were very attentive to our needs. I ordered through DoorDash so I can't comment on the service or inside of the restaurant. Looking forward to going inside another day. My mom had the tenderloin and thought it was good. She thought it was really tender. The tater tots were good also. I had the buffalo chicken wrap and it was pretty good too. The Cole slaw was even better. My favorite was the bread pudding. I can't judge it against other bread puddings since this was my first time trying bread pudding in general but I thought it was delicious.
