The place I meant to eat lunch at was permanently closed and this Indo Chinese restaurant seemed intriguing. It's in a shopping area with easy parking. The restaurant is clean and was pretty quiet on a Thursday afternoon. They have a lunch special that has both vegetarian and meat options where you get an appetizer, main and rice or noodles. They ask about heat level and I got medium to play it safe. I didn't realize that all the chicken and fish would be in a batter and fried and seasoned with different sauces. We could have asked probing questions about the unfamiliar dishes so I guess that was on us. The menu only listed the items without descriptions. I got 'dry fish', which came with a lot of veg and it tasted nice, but there was as much batter as fish. The kappa noodles were absolutely nothing to write home about, and the chicken had a lot of batter and a nondescript sauce. I've never had Manchurian chicken; maybe it's supposed to be bland. There was a little pot of green chilis in vinegar that made the chicken taste better. An egg roll was a surprise on the plate. I had fried rice wrap in egg. It look exciting so I wanted to try it. I had it with shrimp. It was very tasty. I added a little bit a hot sauce that was in the table. And gave it a kick very good. The food service was fast and there were a variety of food options - veg and non-veg. Calcutta chicken, Szechuan Fried rice, Chilli Garlic noodles were the group favorites. Hakka noodles are a great option for kids - 0 spice, lots of veggies and you can add any choice of protein to it. We ordered a variety of vegetarian dishes for a group of five, and the experience was a bit of a mixed bag. The Lat Mai Paneer was just okay. We had high expectations, but it didn't quite deliver--Inchin's Bamboo Garden does a much better version. The Chili Momos, however, were outstanding. They took about 30 minutes to arrive, but they were absolutely worth the wait. If you're planning to order them, I'd recommend placing that order early. We also tried a couple of soups, and both were mediocre and definitely not worth the price. The Curry Rice Noodles were the biggest disappointment. They tasted almost entirely of oil and lacked any real flavor. The Schezwan Fried Rice was decent, though nothing particularly memorable. To end on a high note, we had the Coconut Mango Mousse Cake for dessert, and it was excellent. It was easily the best dish of the meal and something I'd happily order again. Everybody has a bias for food from the part of the world they are from. I'm no different. When it comes to Indo-Chinese I really have no tolerance for South Indian style Indo-Chinese. It has to be Bombay or at the least Calcutta style. Last night after zumba class all I could think about was veg Hakka noodles! Having eaten at their San Carlos location, I knew my minimum expectations would be met. We ordered the veg Hakka noodles and chicken in Manchurian sauce. And really this place serves flavors that are closest to the food you get in Mumbai. We liked the flavors so much we ordered an egg fried rice and that dish delivered on taste too! Service was ok, but I feel it could be better if we had arrived a little earlier. Pretty much all of the staff was trying to clean up and leave for the night, and that's understandable. Joe our server did not rush us and actually took time out to chat with us before heading back to closing up for the night. The old fashioned that the husband ordered from the bar was at best a 3/5, and perhaps management can look into that. Restrooms were clean and the dining area was also well appointed and pleasantly reminiscent of Chinese restaurants in Bombay.
