Thanks to fellow Yelpers for helping me find my new favorite Indian spot. Fremont has absolutely no shortage of solid Indian restaurants, but Masala Republic still outshines them. I love their version of butter chicken and the Hyderabad mixed vegetable korma (a dish I always order if I can find it). Garlic naan was also delicious. Will be back to try more of the breads and dishes. I've gotten takeout a few times and when I have more time, will be sure to dine in. Very disappointing. I ordered the lamb shank biryani, and the lamb was so dry and tough that it had the consistency of jerky instead of tender, slow-cooked lamb shank. The biggest surprise was the raita. It was warm, almost hot, and I was told it had been defrosted. Raita is supposed to be cool and refreshing, so this was a major red flag. I've eaten here before, but the quality has clearly gone downhill. The food felt like it was made with old frozen ingredients, and the meal was nowhere near worth the price. If negative stars were possible, I'd give them. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday, plenty of parking here! Easy to find, really close to the freeway off-ramp. We were seated right away, no wait. The inside is nicely decorated. Service was really good, they asked if we had any questions and offered their recommendations. We ordered the Gobi Manchurian appetizer, garlic naan, chicken naan, butter chicken, Nalli Gosht Mutton Biryani, and dal makhani. Everything was super flavorful and tasty. The chicken naan is something I've never had before and never heard of, gotta get your protein in! It was very tasty. You can adjust the spice level, but all the default spice levels were good for us. Saturday night dinner - we got a spicy chicken appetizer Velluli Karam kodi - This was seriously spicy but we enjoyed it. Chicken Chettinad, onion kulcha and butter naan - all the dishes were flavorful and enjoyable. Ordering is through a QR code and they bring the food out to you. They do not joke about their spice levels, so order accordingly. Prices are reasonable and quantities are sufficient. Service is prompt and courteous. The restaurant got full pretty quickly later in the evening, I think we got lucky being able to walk in on a Saturday evening. There were only a few tables there occupied but lots of ppl came in for take out. The food itself was ok. I ordered rice as well and it was $3.99 for a small container. One of the best finds in the Fremont area, and went with kids for late lunch and had a great food experience. The chicken malai kabob was pretty good with not much spice and nice for kids as well. The best thing though was the nalli goat biryani with the nice aroma of rice and the meat so succulent; the portion was great as well. Will visit again for other amazing Hyderabadi food options!! This is a new location near Sujus, and you order at your table through an app. You also pay through the app so make sure to add tip first! Service was friendly and fast (as it usually is at indian restaurants). For me - this spot was SO flavorful! BUT i will say, for all my lame folks out there, it is VERY spicy! Even the not so spicy items, were spicy! I still ate it though because it was good... i was just struggling. We got their garlic naan (my favorite), rice, samosas, chicken tikka masala and the eggplant curry! Recently my old go to indian restaurants have gone downhill - so this was an exciting new find! Visited this place with my besties on women's day. I found this place through an Instagram post. The ambiance is simple and clean, the service is attentive and now let's talk about food. We ordered there N all I gosht biryani, which was good and I would definitely recommend it, the Telangana chicken chilli leaves lot more to be desired, probably they need to fix how they need to season the chicken, the Shrimp were spot on but the street style noodles is something I would avoid, they were dry, the chicken in the noodle was drry and over done and the overall noodles didn't taste very well. Very flavorful dishes & the meat was all so tender! My favorite was their specialty Nalli Ghost Mutton Shahi Biryani. The mutton was quite literally fall off the bone and the curry was super flavorful with a kick. Went well with the red onions and a squeeze of lime. I also really liked their garlic naan. The chili chicken came out piping hot and fresh with a tangy & spicy flavor profile. Chicken tikka wasn't my favorite but the chicken itself was generously portioned and cooked well. Ordered paneer kadhai, veg biryani, and tandoori roti--very disappointing experience. The paneer kadhai gravy had no real flavor, just chunky onion-tomato with no resemblance to a proper North Indian dish. Definitely do not order. The veg biryani was not biryani at all--it was more like plain pulao. Barely any vegetables (had to search for them), and the few present (zucchini, carrot) didn't add much. The masala was missing, and it mostly tasted like plain rice. Overall, extremely tasteless food for the price. A complete waste of time and money. We won't be going back. read more

Newish Indian restaurant in the plaza on the corner of Stevenson and Blacow. It's in between Rodeo and Cabrillo Park cafe and I've had it bookmarked for awhile. My parents were visiting and they felt like Indian food so finally had a good reason to come. I knew it was a good sign when I came at open on a Monday and by the time I had ordered people were already coming in. The interior is new and clean and had a ncie modern vibe inside. Dal Tadka: I'm a huge fan of Dal and I don't say this lightly but this is the best Dal I have ever had. It had a distinct smoked chili taste that made it so savory and incredibly good. I was getting instant Dal from Trader Joes and I can no longer eat it after this. Butter Chicken/Tikka Masala: Chicken was tender and plentiful inside of each. They didn't overly use cream and I thought the taste was very balanced. The Tikka Masala was especially nice and not overly done with sugar or tomatoes. Vegetable Briyani: HOT! buried under the gorgeously colored rice is a ghee layer that's been amplified with spices. Very spicy and tasty. read more

We had the paneer methi chaman--it was rich, flavorful, and packed with soft paneer. The garlic naan came out fresh, crisp, and perfect to pair with the curry. This is small restaurant but well maintained. We got seated quickly. You can order from QR code. Service was good. Our server was very attentive. In starters we had kothmeer chicken. It has cilantro marination. Taste is unique and really good. This dish has some nuts though. Telangana chicken curry was spicy but not too much. Chicken was very well cooked. My wife and I went for a lunch on Saturday afternoon and really enjoyed the food. Even though it is a modest place but it's clean. The ordering system is all online which was a first for us but felt that it worked out well. We ordered Chilli Paneer, Butter Chicken and Malai Kofta. We came to masala republic for the first time during Fremont restaurant week. The area is quite nice and has an inviting atmosphere and staff are all really friendly. We ordered kadai paneer, butter chicken, dal tadka, butter naan, and tandoor roti. Everything was good, good flavors and portions and we still had leftovers. My only complaint is that the restaurant week offer was a free mango lassi with our order, which was indicated to be a dine-in offer but we got it in a very small to-go cup. As soon as you walk in you are greeted with smells of spices. It will stick to all of your clothes so wear something easy to wash lol. We ordered butter chicken, fish masala and chicken masala along with garlic naan and a side of rice. All of the food was really delicious! Portions were good and we left with leftovers. Service was okay - they took our pitcher of water and didn't give us another until we asked. And at the end of the meal they started getting really busy so it seemed like they were really rushing you out of your table. Not sure how they are staying open with rising costs but they've been around for a year so they are doing something right. My mother in law was craving Indian food. She does not get to eat adventurous food often because her husband usually prefers American food and does not like to try new things. He also cannot handle spicy food. I wanted to find an Indian restaurant that was not too spicy but also clean, since many of the Indian restaurants I have been to feel more like hole in the wall spots. When I saw Masala Republic with its modern decor and photos, I thought it would be a good choice. I also wanted my father in law to have a good first impression of Indian food since it was his first time trying it. We ordered a lot to share. We had chicken biryani, butter chicken, palak paneer, chicken tandoori, shrimp tandoori, hakka noodles, garlic naan, and bullet naan. The food overall was pretty good, not the best Indian food I have had, but enjoyable. The palak paneer was disappointing and tasted watery, and the shrimp tandoori was overly salty. The butter chicken and biryani were solid, and the bullet naan was something new to me. It was spicy naan and I really liked the kick. The biggest drawback was the service. Our server was not very friendly and I had to flag him down multiple times just to get basic things. For the price and the atmosphere I expected better service. The restaurant is in an older plaza with plenty of parking. Overall, it was an okay experience, but nothing stood out enough for me to want to come back, especially with so many other Indian restaurants to try in the area. read more

This used to be another take-out Indian place that I thought was a mixed bag. This new incarnation does have a sit-down feature. There's even improved decor with a tropical pattern on one of the walls and new lighting fixtures. But they do the QR code type of service which totally diminishes the hospitality aspect to the sit-down format. I found the food here to be quite decent, but the service to be non-engaged, bordering on neglectful. Total afterthought and 'oh well' vibes. Technology and the overall trend in service attitude is well exemplified here. So you're pointed to the QR code upon sitting. After placing my order, I had to input my card info, which I hate as you have to manually plug shit in. It is so unnecessarily cumbersome versus just paying at the end with a scan/tap. So I'm already irked by this. Then the food comes out one by one, a chicken dish first with the rice and bread coming almost 5 minutes later. With most cultures food, don't we all want to eat the protein dish alongside the rice or flatbread?! And the lemon soda that I ordered through the system would have never showed up, if I didn't say anything some 10 minutes later. Like there is a serious disconnect between the service staff and the system that they are using. Then at the end I had to go up to the front to ask for a couple of take-out containers and when I finished packing, they finally bring the tablet over for me to sign for a tip, which is highlighting an 18% amount. Let's recap: I had to place my own order; I had to manually put in payment info; we couldn't eat the meal as intended until much later when all the dishes were present; almost didn't receive a drink I paid for; then had to get my own take-out containers. Did I leave a tip? Yes, only cuz I'm just so conditioned to do so, but after leaving I felt like a dumbass for doing so. Serious regret. Anyhoo, I'll still review the food. Paratha ($4/4.5*) Love this flatbread made with whole wheat flour. Kinda reminds of scallion pancakes but not as greasy. Has a nice chew with crisp edges. I like this more than naan as sometimes naan can be too crisp/dry on the surface. I think this is more panfried versus placed on the hot surface of a tandoor oven. This is so good dipped and/or eaten with the other dishes here, but this came out much later that the other dishes. Basmati Rice ($5/4*) Plain but properly fluffy. Slightly salted too. Dal Tadka ($14/4*) One of the better lentil dishes I've had. Super tender almost creamy lentil stew packed with flavor. Garlic, onions, dried whole chili pods and curry leaves and a definite rich ghee background. Almost too intense to eat on its own, but with rice and one of their flatbreads, this is super ideal. I would get this for take-away again. Chicken Tandoori ($15/3*) They'll give ya 2 chicken leg quarters cut in smaller pieces. Properly grilled in that tandoor oven, nicely charred exterior with somewhat juicy center. But the spice marinade is like a paste which gave the dish also a 'paste-y' texture in the bites, which I didn't care for. The spicing is crazy intense but was also saltier than it had to be. I love this dish but I didn't love this version. Lemon Soda ($5.50/3.5*) Actually pretty refreshing with the spicy food here. Natural lemon flavor with a slight sweet to salty profile. I've had similar drinks at Vietnamese restaurants. But to get this some 10 plus minutes upon taking my first bite, kinda defeated the purpose on the refreshment aspect of the drink. I was excited to try them and wanted a new and good Indian place to put in my rotation, but I just don't want to go through all the B.S. again. After eating here, I am convinced I have been eating inauthentic Indian food all these years. I am not Indian so all I know is "Americanized Indian food." That said, I ordered the butter chicken. It was cooked different and tasted nothing I ate before. The chicken was cooked in very flavorful spices. I came here on a Saturday night after reading the Yelp reviews, and unfortunately, we left disappointed. The restaurant was nearly empty, so we were seated right away, but from there the experience went downhill. Our server was not very attentive and wasn't able to accommodate a non-spicy option for my 3-year-old. As a result, my son ended up eating only naan. There also seemed to be some tension between the back kitchen staff and the front servers, which was noticeable and distracting, as our server appeared preoccupied with back-and-forth conversations rather than attending to guests. We ordered naan, butter chicken, and the pesto seekh kebab. The naan and butter chicken were fine, but nothing standout or different from what you can find at many other Indian restaurants. The pesto seekh kebab, which was listed as a chef's special, was particularly disappointing. It just tasted like grilled chicken heavily coated with a whole bottle of pesto, with the flavor being very overpowering. We ended up leaving shortly after. I've already come to this restaurant twice, and it is very quickly becoming one of my favorite indian restaurants in Fremont. The waiters usually seat you quite quickly and show you the QR code to order. I actually enjoy this method of ordering because I feel the rush of when a waiter comes over and keeps asking you if you're ready lol! You can order and pay on the app so that you don't have to worry by the end of the meal. The only issue with this form of ordering is that I've found that because you have finished all the ordering and payment on the phone, after the waiters are done giving you your food, they are not really the most attentive. They don't really come around to service you at all (so our waters did not get filled and I had to walk up to the counter to request items). However, no real problems with the food. My favorite things to order are the paneer masala, butter chicken, egg / paneer biryani with garlic naan and ghobi kulcha on the side. I liked how flakey the ghobi kulcha was and how garlicky and crispy the naan is. I don't love when I go to an indian restaurant and there are tons of aromatics in the rice, but I liked how the biryani comes here! The paneer is nice and flavorful and there are a bunch of pieces at the bottom of the rice. The chicken in the butter chicken feels like it is chicken thigh, so it comes out nice and juicy (I absolutely hate when I get butter chicken and it is SO dry that I only eat the sauce!). Everything is a pretty nice and spicy level, so I would definitely look out for that if you're somebody who can't handle spice. The portions are also quite large too, so expect some leftovers if you're eating for two! Overall, great! Definitely returning and trying other items. read more

Advised me food will be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived at the restaurant in 9-10 minutes and the food was already ready! Coincidentally, I met the server who I spoke to on the phone and he jokingly said have some yogurt on the side. Friendly. Kind. Attentive to needs. The food had so much depth in flavor so much so I only had THREE bites before someone else in the household ate the entire thing if that tells you anything. This place was so cute! Came on a Wednesday around 6 pm and there was no one there so we were seated immediately. Our server was super nice and helped us with the menu as well. I ordered the butter chicken and 2 naans: the kashmiri and the garlic naan. The food came out in like 10 minutes and looked delicious! The butter chicken sauce was tasty and the chicken was tender. The sauce was a bit on the watery side and I wish it had a bit more cream in it but it was still delicious. I also wish there were a bit more chicken pieces in it as there were about 8 chicken pieces total that were kind of small. However, both the naans were incredible! The garlic naan was super flavorful and the kashmiri naan was sweet and had a sticky texture to it. I do wish the kashmiri naan had a bit more filling as I could only taste the coconut flavor and not the dates or the nuts inside. I used both in the butter chicken sauce and it tasted great. I visited Masala Republic around 7:30 p.m. on a Friday evening and was pleasantly surprised to get a table for two without any wait. I started with a Karivepaku Kodi, followed by their signature Nalli Gosht Mutton Biryani and the Zafrani Chicken Biryani. The starter arrived in about 10-15 minutes, and the biryanis took around 20-25 minutes to be served. While there was a bit of a wait, the food was absolutely worth it. The ambiance of the restaurant was good. Nice place to have a relaxed meal with friends and family Everything we ordered was flavorful and leaned a little on the spicier side -- which I personally enjoyed. The standout was definitely the Nalli Gosht Mutton Biryani. It was loaded with tender lamb, so much so that it almost felt like there was more meat than rice! The portion of lamb was incredibly generous, and the biryani itself was rich, aromatic, and satisfying. If you're planning a visit, the Nalli Gosht Biryani is a must-try. Our meal transported me back to Hyderabad. I am normally skeptical about rating new restaurants this high as the chef/cook changes within a few months but our meal was so delicious that I couldn't help rating them well. Restaurant is in a strip mall and seats about 50. Looks like it's recently renovated so ambiance is contemporary but I didn't fancy the fake plants. Here's what we got- **karvepaku kodi, $13, 4.5/5- Made with fragrant curry leaves, this was lip smacking delicious. It was spicy due to the use of chillies rather than an overdose of spices. It was essentially fried chicken tossed in a gravy. Everyone at the table including the kids loved it. And the quantity was very generous, four of us could share it without being left with a hankering for more. We cleaned up every last bit of the gravy as well. **Nizami Damka Chicken, $13,4.5/5 This is the kind of chicken curry that gets served at weddings in Hyderabad. Not a very thick curry, more on the runnier side, very flavorful yet mild. Paired wonderfully with the spicy bullet naan. **Bullet Naan, $3.5, 4.5/5 Naan smothered with bright green chillies. I enjoyed the zip of heat, might not be for the faint hearted. **Zafraani chicken biryani, $14, 5/5 I could smell the saffron and the first spoonful was a wonderful realization of "isn't this how saffron biryani supposed to taste?" I normally give up eating biryani after a few spoonfuls but this time I just couldn't stop myself from cleaning up the bowl. It has been a long time since I had such a great biryani! Fall off the bone tender chicken, flavorful and separate grains of rice, mild yet full of flavor, in short all the makings of an amazing biryani.
