    Andhra Kara Masala Dosa Combo
    Ajit S.

Stopped by for Saturday breakfast. Very small place in a strip mall. They have many varieties of dosas and utthapams. I tried the Andhra kara masala dosa combo which came with 1 vada and a idli along with kara dosa. Kara dosa was excellent and the chutneys were pretty good. I would rate this slightly below Mylapore though. If Mylapore Fremont has a long 1 hour wait, this place is a good backup option.

They have Roti Canai as a new item on the menu and it was pretty decent! Curry was with chickpeas and was good.

Yesterday, we dined in at Dosa Express and ordered Thattu Idli, Sambar Vada, Rasam Vada, and Kothu Parotta. The Thattu Idli is still very good -- soft, consistent, and honestly one of the best I've had in Fremont/Newark. The three varieties of chutney are usually a plus, and this idli is the main reason I keep coming back. Unfortunately, apart from the idli, everything else was quite disappointing compared to how it used to be. The sambar was extremely watery with very little flavor, the vada tasted frozen, and the rasam felt like plain tamarind water. The chutneys were served straight from the refrigerator, very cold. At the very least, they could have been brought to room temperature, which is how most restaurants usually serve chutney for dine-in. We didn't complain at the restaurant because dishes like sambar and rasam can't really be fixed instantly, even if they are replaced. We also noticed that another couple dining there was complaining about the taste, which confirmed that we weren't the only ones feeling this way. The Kothu Parotta didn't taste authentic -- it felt more like chilli parotta and wasn't done well. This experience was especially disappointing because we used to order from this restaurant quite often last year through DoorDash when my in-laws were visiting from India, and they absolutely loved the food. Earlier this year as well, we continued ordering, but over time the quality seemed to go down, so we stopped. That's why I really wanted to dine in again -- mainly for the Thattu Idli, which I still truly enjoy. From what I've read in other reviews, this appears to be a Gen Z, woman-led business. I genuinely want to support women-owned businesses, so I will definitely come back again and hope to see the food quality return to its original standard, especially the sambar, chutney, and rasam. I really hope Dosa Express takes this feedback in the right spirit and works on improving the taste, because this place used to be one of our favorites and has so much potential.

Truly express as the name suggests for a quick yet flavorful Indian meal. This place opens early and specializes in small bites and snacks like samosas and dosas, however some of their dosas can be quite loaded and fill you up. On face value, it does seem a bit pricey but they also do have weekend specials and combos to make the meals more economical. The complex flavors of each dish and cooking methods also make their food attractive to order rather than prepare at home. Parking can be difficult during peak times as other restaurants in the small strip mall are quite popular, however, during the non-peak hours, you'll find plenty of spots. Worst case scenario, there is street parking in the neighborhood next door. When inside, you'll be greeted with a strong aroma of spices and flavors and have an abundance of tables for you to choose from. The menus are readily available and when you're ready to place your order, head up to the register. The staff are friendly and patient, often seen busily maintaining the kitchen and preparing the many orders fulfilled on the phone. Upon placing your order, in about 15 minutes, you'll get your food. We ended getting take out and everything was packed in individual boxes, although a bit messily stacked in the plastic bag they included. Regardless, the fragrance from the food continued wafting within the car on our ride home, enticing our stomach to growl relentlessly. Samosas - both types of samosas were breaded well and crispy. The ketchup served with each samosa paired well, but I preferred the pure taste of the little bite. Dosa - crispy yet fluffy and paired well with the chutney and dipping sauces. It might taste better fresh during a dine in experience but it still satisfied our craving. Overall, the snacks and small bites were nice introductions to Dosa Express and due to their convenient location just blocks from the highway entrance and embedded into the north Fremont neighborhood, it's an accessible spot for our next craving for a quick dosa run. There are plenty more on their menu that we have yet to try and their specials and combos seem intriguing enough for another visit. Our expectations weren't too high given the express nature of the food, and it exceeded that given the freshness of the food and hospitality of the staff and venue. You want dosa and you want it fast? Well Dosa Express is a spot to consider!

Unfortunately our visit to Dosa express was not the best; I saw great reviews so I was expecting a good experience, but there were a few things I didn't like. We walked into the store and we didn't understand how seating works because nobody was telling us where to go, and the counter employee was watching us but not saying anything, which was quite awkward. We sat down and then only he said it's order at the counter - I think this should be made clear by putting a sign at the front because the front counter makes it seem like a staff member will seat you upon walking in. We did not like the ambiance; it feels awkward because there is no music playing and it's just silence. I couldn't whisper without feeling too loud. It's also all self service, you get your own water and silverware; they bring the dish but that's it. I ordered the chef special schezuan dosa and upon ordering I did ask the employee if it would be too spicy and he told me it would not. I took a few bites and it was actually quite spicy; had I known I would have ordered a different dish. When I told the employee that this dish is quite spicy, he did not offer me anything, even if not a refund or a new dish I expected at least an apology. I couldn't finish it. We also ordered Bombay spring veggie and the andhare plate. Both felt like they lacked flavor and were not special. Potato masala was just mashed and thrown instead of chopped appropriately. We also got gobi manchurian which tasted okay but felt overcooked and too crispy. There were two staff working and they seem to be overworked. I hope there can be more employees so each worker does not feel so stretched thin and overwhelmed with things to do. While I was not impressed this time, I do hope to come back and maybe I would have a better experience.

We had the masala dosa happy hour all day and onion ravi masala dosa which I really enjoyed! It came with soup and three sauces but I only like the orange sauce as the rest was too coconut ish. Would love to try other stuff like spring spicy dosa, cheese masala dosa, paneer pakora, masala puri next time but I'm happy to dine here. This restaurant does not offer meat. Very clean and healthy.

This place is reminiscent of a place I went to in India. It is very casual seating and the service is great, at least when there are fewer customers. The dosas are great and the only thing I would love to see is more quantity for their buttermilk. Otherwise, the place is terrific.

Food - 3.5/5. I have been wanting to check this place out for a while now. Glad I was able to do so today. Ordered the onion rava dosa and masala dosa. Have to say I was disappointed with the onion rava dosa. It was crispy but really bland compared to some of the other rava dosas I have had. Maybe this is the southern Indian influence? I was definitely biased since my first time having a rava dosa was at a northern Indian restaurant and their dosa is sooo good, super crispy and more "toasted" compared to this. Even their chutney and sambar tasted much better than what I had here. That said the Masala Dosa is much better. I love the potato filling that comes with it. If the masala dosa is a bit more crispy that would have been perfect. Service - 5/5 Fast. Friendly and they took time to explain and mentioned Masala dosa is one of their popular items. Ambiance - 5/5 clean and spacious.

Idlies with Mysore Maslala Dosa; Onion Chili Rava Masala Dosa
    David K.

Dosa Express is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with an extensive menu of dosas and other tiffins, served in a self-service dining area. The combo plates here allow you to try a few different items, and I had the steamed idlies with a mini Mysore Masala Dosa, a crispy rice and lentil batter crepe, brushed on the inside with a slightly spicy orange chutney and filled with masala (creamy spiced mashed potatoes). The idlies and dosa were served with sambar (a hot and sour lentil vegetable stew), a red tomato chutney, a white coconut chutney, and a green herb and coconut chutney. I also had the Onion Chili Rava Masala Dosa, a lacy, crispy dosa made with semolina batter, cooked with chopped red onions and green chilies, served with a side of masala potatoes, chutneys, and sambar. The dosas were both freshly-prepared, crisp, and delicious, though the same couldn't be said of the chutneys, which were rather flavorless and had probably been sitting around for a while. Nevertheless, this was a decent, casual place for a dosa at a fair price, though the ambiance and cleanliness left something to be desired.

I tried them at Camp Yelp and they were great!! Their idli was soft and one of my favorite food items at the whole event (if not my absolute favorite)! The people were so kind and excited to be sharing their food and they definitely brought the vibes. Their booth was one of the most popular there!

Mainly have just tried the chaats, and they have been very mediocre. Not great ambiance. Price is at least cheap. Not sure why the samosas came with ketchup.....

    Spicy Malai Paneer Dosa
    Arvind S.

We went out to Oakland for a concert on a Weekday and on the drive back to Mountain View post the show, we were on the lookout for late night restaurants and I'm glad we found this place. Unassuming place, it was empty at the time, understandably so. As soon as a saw a spicy malai paneer dosa on the menu, I knew that is what I was going to go far. It was pretty good - 4/5. The portions of the paneer inside was pretty great. Probably a little heavy on the butter/malai which made it a tad heavy late in the night. But it wasn't really spicy, so not sure why the dosa is labeled as spicy. The Chutney and sambar were decent, a bit cold, probably understandable as it was quite late in the night. My friend had the thatte idly and he said that was a little cold as well. Overall still solid food and I will probably come back during the day, I would expect to enjoy the idly and the sides more then.

I was recently invited to a neighbourhood holiday party where each neighbour brings a dish - like a potluck. I decided to bring Curry Puffs. The curry puffs were a hit - they were gone in seconds, a testimonial to the deliciousness of these treats made by Curry Leaves Bistro. The host even placed the curry puffs the star and centre of the photo he sent to the neighbours. Source: Malaysian curry puffs are widely available at street food stalls, bakeries, and markets and are enjoyed as a breakfast item, an afternoon tea snack, or a late-night treat. Locally known as karipap, it is a popular, savory, half-moon-shaped pastry snack with a flaky, crispy crust and a thick, spiced filling. They are deep-fried until golden brown, resulting in a crispy exterior. When eaten hot, the curry puff provides a satisfying contrast between the golden, flaky, and crispy exterior and the soft, warm, savory, and mildly spicy interior.

Come early or you'll likely not get to have what you're eyeing on. When: Saturday dinner at 5pm (came when they were opening door) What: Chicken satay, pork satay, beef satay, seafood laksa, hainanese chicken rice, fried spring roll Experience: Superb food!! It is a lot of food, but we wiped out all of it among two adults and two young kids. The satays were SO GOOD! Hands down the best I've had in the USA, and on par with the best satay places I've had in Southeast Asia! Our favorites including both kids were beef and pork. So tender, so flavorful and delicious even without using the peanut sauce. We even got another two orders of each to take home! Seafood laksa was such a big portion with good amount of seafood. If you've had Singaporean or Malaysian laksa, this is different. Different in a good way since the owner chef is from Indonesia. The Hainanese chicken rice was tasty. Turmeric rice was different since I'm used to the ginger chicken rice, but the poached chicken was very well made. Under the chicken skin was a layer of gelatin which happens when the chicken is poached and then cool in a meticulous method. Together with the ginger scallion oil sauce, it was umami! Fried spring rolls were crispy and good flavor of meat and vegetables inside. Together with their house lime chili sauce, it was a party in the mouth! Looking forward to their opening at their next location!

Ever since I had it in Singapore, I've been hoping to find somewhere that serves this soup. It was nice to find somewhere that serves it, but it doesn't compare to the flavor of the laksa I had in Singapore. (Maybe it's a different variant of the dish, but I preferred the more coconut heavy broth flavor that I had over there.) I still enjoyed this dish overall though. I also tried the Hainanese Chicken. It really wasn't anything amazing, but this could be due to the dish being served with regular, white rice; they had run out of turmeric rice for the day. I also had the kumquat sparkling drink. The menu notes it's sour, but I didn't think it was overly so. It was still more sweet than sour in my opinion. I enjoyed the drink, and it tasted like they used real fruit rather than artificial syrups. I think the portions are a bit small, particularly in the case of the Hainanese Chicken, but it's nice that they served complimentary shrimp chips. Service came off as genuinely welcoming/friendly, even if we weren't checked on after the food came out.

Interior is bigger on the inside once past the small entrance, with plenty of tables which could accommodate larger groups, and quite a few round tables which would readily seat nine. Service was not great, with my friend and I repeatedly having to try and get someone's attention throughout the entire meal. Decoration is a mix of harsh lighting, softer lighting, wine display and palm tree wallpaper walls, all varying greatly depending on where in the restaurant you are seated. Peanuts on the table come complimentary and are a fun plus. We ordered the curry laksa, roti canai and fish head rice noodle soup (the fish head rice noodle soup was a last minute change as they didn't have rendang and they said it was their number one dish). The fish head rice noodle soup was a creamy coconut milk base with a slight sour tang. Comes off as something which could be made at home with random vegetables thrown in. The roti canai was the best dish we got, though the roti was more on the flaky side and lacked having any chew to it. The curry laksa felt like a mix of both the other dishes: same curry as the roti canai, and same eclectic mix of vegetables which would have fit well in a stir fry dish. Flavor was so-so, but felt too oily which was strange as the roti canai was great and not as oily. The staff gave us a complimentary red bean dessert to wrap up the meal which was superb. Overall, I'm glad there's a spot for Malaysian/Singaporean dishes in Chinatown, especially as it's slim pickings for the cuisine in downtown SF. However, I feel this spot misses the mark.
