Decent Indian fast food in Newark. Stopped by with friends this evening for dinner. We originally went to their newer Fremont location, but it was "temporarily closed" so we drove another 15 minutes north to this location, which is the original Mumbai Chowk, around for over ten years. My friends arrived a few minutes after I did. We ordered at the counter; all veg food, as some of our non-veg choices, like Seekh kabab, were not available, and caught up on old times while waiting for our meal. This is mostly a takeout joint, as the seating is sparse and the dining area quite small. I enjoyed the décor showing fast food found near various Mumbai railway stations, like Ghatkopar, Bandra, and Bombay Central. The food arrived quickly and was delicious. We ate hungrily, then ordered more. We ended a very satisfying meal with masala chai. My favorite dishes were the Mumbai daal fry and balti paneer, my friends also enjoyed the Chana masala and Methi malai paneer. The naan basket was excellent, but the rice and butter tandoori roti was meh. Total bill was a little over $100 before tip (reasonable for 4 adults). Bathroom was available and operational. Parking was easy. Happy to return to try some of their non-vegetarian dishes like baida roti. read more

For being a fast casual restaurant, the quality is fantastic. I had the butter chicken and fish kolhapuri lunch combos.

I've gotten take out here twice now and I have to say the chicken tikka masala is honestly the best I have ever had. Combined with the garlic naan, it's a winning combination. That said, it is quite a bit spicy so be careful of that (I personally love it, but it might be too hot for some) - additionally it's a bit pricy but you do get excellent quality and flavors. read more

A 5 star review of the food quality as the restaurant ambience is not great. They don't serve you and yet expect you to tip. A good place to try Mumbai flavors, specially thalis and fish recepies. They also have some unique recepies from provinces around Mumbai. One of my favorites dish here is Sukka Chicken/fish Masala. I noticed that not many Indian restaurants offered this dish. This is a self service environment. There won't be any waiters to serve you. Basically, you order & pay at the counter, then they will call you when the food is ready. Dishes that I would recommended to try is Sukka chicken/fish masala, Railway fish, neyi fry fish, & butter chicken. Overall, I would give this place 3/5. We ordered Chicken Seekh kabab frankie and Surmai fry combo. The Frankie was not good as I dont know why but they had put cooked cabbage in the frankie and the cabbage taste was overpowering chicken and combo didn't taste good. However, Surmai was nicely cooked but they could have add little spice and salt in surmai fry prep. Other than than, daal rice and roti were cooked beautifully. This place is pretty good! It's got some pretty busy wall decor that make you feel like you're in the hustle and bustle of India. It's more casual dining where you walk up to the cashier, grab your menu and then order and pay before your meal is ready. You also have to pick up your meal and there is no wait staff, although they do ask for a tip when you pay which is why I took a star off. We got the veggie biryani: good and a large portion of it. Palak paneer: also good, but needs a little more salt and flavor. Spicy fish curry: the best dish of the night. They're not joking when they say it is spicy. Jalapeño and cheese naan: needs to be cheesier and more jalapeño flavor as it tasted too close to an original naan. Regular naan: nice and fluffy with a slight crunch at the end, yum! The four stars is only for the Malwani/Marathi food they serve. The pomfret fry is the best version in Bay Area. They really are onto something. My sincere advice to them: What makes me sad is that they don't embrace it and instead have a large menu that tries to cater to pleasing everyone while their best gets lost. Anything we tried outside of the Malwani and Marathi dishes were just not good (I still didn't take stars off because the fish was out of this world, truly authentic). They should get rid of the Frankie's, Indo chinese, chaats.. making it cost effective too. Never would I have thought of ordering fish here had I not checked Yelp. The pomfret fry was crisp, not greasy, great authentic Malwani marinade - amazing. The veg kolhapuri had the distinctive taste of a well made goda masala but I could tell that the vegetables were parboiled in a way for dual use for pav bhaji so the flavors were not absorbed into the vegetables. Dal fry was excellent, drinks were good too. Frankie was a serious disappointment having grown up in Mumbai. They have a star in their Malwani chef that is lost in the middle of generic Indian fare.. sad.. read more

For starters: I am not a fan of Indian cuisine :-D I only ever eat Indian, if my husband insists. I don't tolerate spiciness well, I am not a big fan of sauces, it's just not my cup of tea. We came here after a visit at Ardenwood Farms with the bebe and because the hubby had come here often when he worked close by. I didn't know HOW often he ate here until we talked to the owner, haha. That being said, he knew what to expect, I didn't. So, it looked like Covid changed quite a bit about the place. There was no real table service any more, you could either order at the bar or via a QR code by the table. You got a little gadget that told you when to pick up the food. The variety of foods is ok. My better half ALWAYS eats chicken korma, so that's what he had. I opted for a wrap. Also, we got pomfrat fry for the bebe. Personally, I enjoyed the pomfrat fry the most. It was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Just enough heat, but not too much, so the 2.5 year old was fine with it (she's an adventurous eater). My wrap was a bit too spicy for me and the hubby was very much in love with the korma. Oh - and the mango lassi was superb! So, I guess we had a nice lunch. As a Fremont native, I come here regularly on Sundays with my wife and enjoy this gem of a restaurant. It's not the cheapest Indian food in the area, but you get the improved quality you pay for. Counter service is friendly and prompt. Nice hole in the wall restaurant is clean and spacious. Naan is made to order and texture is fluffy and correct. Curries are not too oily and are well seasoned Veg dishes: Chole kulcha, chana masala, palak paneer are all great Chicken curries: Sukha masala, Korma, Tikka masala, and balti are all delicious. Amazing Mumbai food. Its been a while we had been there so decided to try it over this weekend. Really wanted to eat vada pav and other mumbai food and this is one of the best option in the bay area. We got there around 8:15pm on a Friday evening and easily got a seat. It did started getting crowded around 8:30-8:45 pm so going there a little early does help. We ordered vada pav, misal pav, masala papad, dabeli, and papdi chaat. Loved the misal pav as it was spicy and hot. Vada pav is good and so is dabeli. Misal pav was definitely the highlight of the entire meal so not raving about vada pav or dabeli. Masala papad was ok as it was roasted papad and not fried. Masala papad tastes delicious only on a fried papad. Chaat was good and had good amount of savory and sweet chutneys. Overall the chaat items are good. Our food arrived pretty quickly and our hostess was very attentive. Service was quick and we got quick water refills. You will need a lot of water refills with that spicy food ;) Overall a nice place to try some mumbai food. read more

The murmura they had used for not a good quality, and the chutneys they had used didn't have much taste or flavor. The boiled potato used was too cold. They must have just taken it out of the fridge. The whole dish was too soggy from the time it was served. So needless to say, bhel puri was total flop. My friends said their non-veg dishes were nice. So don't go here for chaat. Just go here for non-veg. I am not going back there again. That "ran out of milk" & sad bhel puri taste will keep me away from here. read more

I have eaten at Mumbai chowk a bunch of times and have always enjoyed my meals there. This past weekend we got takeout (given the current shelter in place) and decided to go all out. Ordered a ton of different dishes (so we could eat from Mumbai chowk for a few days haha). The takeout was contact less and swift. They specialize is Mumbai street food and I really appreciate that as you don't always see these items in Indian restaurants otherwise. That is one of the biggest motivations for me to get food here. Given the variety of food served here the street food ranks at the top. Followed by the more traditional entree dishes and last the Indo-Chinese dishes. I usually stay away from the Indo-Chinese as it tends to be a bit oily for my taste. From the street food my top choices are - vada pav (absolutely get this one), dabeli, frankie (paneer is my preferred choice), dahi puri, shrimp kolowada, and on Sundays the pomfret fry (noms!) From the entrees - mutton sukha, chicken afghani, daal fry, and chicken tikka biryani. Highly recommend this for anyone who likes Indian street food or has never really eaten it. Indian is one of my go-to to-go (heh) cuisines, especially when I don't feel like eating meat. Nearly all the reviews mentioned the vada pav, so that was a must. I also got the ragda pattice, new to me, and the dal, a classic that just feels like a habit now. Takeout orders are ready within 15 minutes per the website. I ordered online and after driving across the bridge to the restaurant, I simply picked up my bag of goodies sitting on the table just inside the front door. They packaged everything securely, including wrapping saran wrap around the ragda pattice clamshell. Note: There were no napkins or utensils included, which is a little difficult when one did not order any naan or edible vehicle for the soupy entrees; but, I appreciate minimizing usage of disposable cutlery. I was pretty hyped about the vada pav so dug into that first. Upon first bite: Wow! I immediately understood what all the other reviews raved about. The fried potato patty burst with flavor as well as a hefty spice kick! Even though it looks like a small slider it is a heavy snack, very satisfying and filling. Indeed the all star of the meal. The ragda pattice was a similar idea, but supersized: a big pea and potato based patty with yummy sauce on top. The dal was also very flavorful but tasted a bit burnt and was quite oily; I think Mumbai Chowk specializes more in the street food items. Mediocre food. I think the quality has gone down since pre Covid. The BHEL puri was super soggy and full of tamarind sauce. Vada pav was really good, and the paneer San bhi was good. Chaas had ice in it, which is not normal , so it tasted really watered down. And the like soda had a lot of artificial sugar. If you're in the area and want quick Indian food, go here, but nothing too special or out of the ordinary. read more
