TLDR: Went for a friend's birthday lunch on a Sunday afternoon, and they were able to accommodate for various sized parties. They were a little disorganized, but the decor and vibes were very homey. Their portions are fairly large, and overall the food was pretty decent, although not all of the dishes were my cup of tea I will say. This was my first time having Afghanan cuisine, so take what I say here in my review with a grain of salt. Food: 4/5 A friend mentioned that this is his family's go to spot for some of the most authentic Afghan food, so this is what I am basing the rest of this review on. We ordered Triple Kabob Murgh, Teka and Chaplee Kabob, Quabili Pallow, Mantu, Aushak, Sabzi Challow, Kado Borani, and Doogh. The kabob meats were all seasoned differently and were very tender, but everything else had a very similar palate to each other. Everything was fairly tasty, and the lamb wasn't too gamey, which I appreciated. If you try the Doogh yogurt drink, know that it is sour and an acquired taste, my friends said it wasn't good until they ate some food along side it. Had a girls' date here, and it was my first time having authentic Afghan food. Wow!!! I was so blown away. Afghan food is highly underrated and not talked about enough. The service was excellent, but the food was incredible, and to be told that it was better before (the establishment is under new management), I can't imagine it being better. Actually, I've had home-cooked meals since, and yes, it can be better, haha, but that's not to take anything away from this restaurant. Came by for lunch the other day and it was a tasty experience. Parking was available on the street or right behind the restaurant. Dining is available indoors or on their patio. Started off with their mantu and it was tasty. The dumplings were delicately prepared with meat inside and topped with tasty yogurt. Excellent. The leek bolani was also excellent. It was a gigantic portion with plenty of leaks inside. Super flavorful too. The chapli entree was gigantic and perfect for sharing. The brown rice was flavorful. The chapli was juicy and slightly spicy. Excellent. Staff were courteous throughout the meal. The dining room was slightly remodeled a few years ago and is starting to be long in the tooth...perhaps it's cultural. $2 fee for credit cards. ~$20/head after tax, gratuity with plenty of leftovers for lunch. read more

LAMB REDO When I originally wrote a review for this place I mistook it for the kabob house at the next corner so I deleted this review. About months ago I ate here for lunch with my family. I love lamb because I don't eat it at home often. When the opportunity came to order lamb kabob here I will order it. My sister ordered bolani as a starter. I've ordered bolani at the kabob house at the corner in the past. I remembered the bolani at the kabob house was oily. The bolani my sister ordered was wasn't oily but toasty. I enjoyed the bolani. When I ate the lamb kabob something didn't taste right. Initially due to the texture I thought the lamb was spoiled. Then after few more bites the problem wasn't the lamb but the marinade seasoning, which had a pasty taste. The coating from the marinade was sticky. Due to the texture I had a difficult time finishing the lamb kabob. Due to the dish I ordered I wasn't sure If I would go back to eat at De Afghanan Cuisine anytime soon. My mom wanted to eat here again. I came back to De Afghanan Cuisine this past Sunday for lunch. I knew I wasn't going to order kabobs as I wanted to try something new. I looked at the items for the rice specialties section of the menu. Both items included lamb. One item quabili pallow included raisins and I don't like raisins. The second item was sabzi challow. I didn't know what to except. When I first tasted the sabzi challow it made up for the lamb kabob I ordered about three months ago. The lamb was moist yet not gamey. The lamb submerged in spinach reminds me of the Hawaiian dish lau lau, which is chunks of meat wrapped in ti leaves and steamed. Unlike the lamb kabob I can order the sabzi challow with lamb again when I come back here to eat. Even though this place is known for its kabob the sabzi challow with lamb is the best dish at De Afghanan Cuisine. I normally love Afghan cuisine, but we were not huge fans of our meals. I would like to give 4-5 stars for the service and for the ambiance. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has a very authentic feel that takes you to the Middle East. But we ordered 3 dishes and 2 drinks, we only liked one of the dishes we ordered which was the chicken kebab plate. The macaroni soup was a huge portion, enough to feed 2-3 people as a meal. It lacked flavor and the soup was so thick and the macaroni noodles were so soft they were mushy, it was hard to eat. I also ordered the doogh beverage. It was a salty beverage, not what I expected. I don't mind the yogurt/mint, but it was so thick that it was also hard to drink. Imagine the thickness of a smoothie but salty yogurt flavor. The restaurant's posted hours said they were open until 9:30 PM, and we tried calling multiple times before driving there, but no one answered the phone. We arrived around 9:20 PM, only to be told they were already closed because they had stopped taking orders at 9:00 PM. If the last order is at 9:00 PM, that should be clearly stated on the website, Google, and the restaurant's phone message. We wasted our time driving there because the posted business hours did not match what was actually happening. The bolani came in a huge portion and tasted just like Chinese scallion pancakes, very fragrant and oily (in a good way). The sabzi was just minced spinach and was not too memorable. We loved Aziz and his De Afghan mini chain for years. We actually live in Livermore and that location was passed to a relative. The quality soon went down there to the point that we haven't went to that location. Would wait to eat my Afghan food in Fremont. Now Aziz must be retiring or something. The last three times I ate here, my food was very over cooked dry and had none of the spice on it that got us hooked. My wife went again Today, the restaurant stunk like old bedding and the people preparing the food looked dirty. It takes alot for my wife to get this upset. LOVE LOVE LOVE this restaurant! I've dined at De Afghanan Cuisine multiple times and it never disappoints. Food has consistently been good and you can't go wrong ordering any of kabobs combos. The restaurant itself is pretty spacious but it does get busy packed during the weekend. Prepare to wait a bit for seating and for the food to come out. I always get the triple kabob plate with brown rice which allows you to try all 3 types of of meat. Perfect for someone that has trouble deciding what to order. The bodinjon borani (roasted eggplant) appetizer is also a must order here! I like to pair it with the bread that they give and I always ask for extra bread. First, I liked the building and art throughout. It was very cultural, and it seemed to be very popular. The ambiance was casual. The folks both in the restaurant and running it are super nice. We were offered to try an item by a table next to ours, for example. As for the food, you need to know that the bolani are a favorite that are quite nicely spiced. Apparently, the guy who took the order had stepped out. Fine, but that doesn't mean you can't figure out our order! They finally found it. Then they scrambled to get it ready. And man, were they disorganized. I don't know how many times they opened our boxes to confirm they got the right meal made. The ground sirloin kabob (which was actually a patty) was awesome. Extremely flavorful and moist. The teka kabob (beef) had good taste, but was a little overcooked and dry. This place is a hole in the wall, that I would not have ever gone to, but was in the area and a friend met up with me and took me here. It was the middle of day for lunch, so it wasn't busy, but it was a little slow on the service side. My friend has a triple combo which also included chicken. The chicken was moist and tasted good. This place absolutely reeks of contamination, especially if you have food allergies or religious beliefs. You order a Bolani, and it's fried on the same grill as Beef Chapli kabab. When I confronted the owner, he was completely nonchalant about the contamination. I feel utterly disgusted for having ordered from this joint and ended up throwing the food. There is a large Afghan population in Fremont, and I was told to try one of their restaurants. I opted for DeAfghanan Cuisine, the most popular Afghan restaurant on Yelp. This restaurant did not disappoint, and I am glad it was my first experience with Afghan cuisine because I'd definitely add Afghan dishes to my list of go-to foods. It seems like there are two locations for this restaurant right next to each other. One is for takeout, and the other is for dining in. The dine-in restaurant seems unnoticeable at first because the exterior façade doesn't look like a restaurant. However, as soon as you open the heavy doors, you'll see a fully operating restaurant with lots of customers. I ordered one of their bolanis (I forgot which one) and the combination kabob specialty. The bolani is HUGE. At first, I wondered why it was priced so high, but the serving size definitely feeds 3-4 people. The combination kabob was a great choice because I couldn't decide which kabob I wanted. My favorite had to be the chicken, but all the kabobs were very flavorful. I opted for the Afghan brown rice, which is actually white rice but seasoned. This restaurant has excellent customer service. Food was fine. That's why we've returned for years. Wait staff service was also fine. They're not that attentive and charged me for a drink they never brought, but mistakes happen and my expectations are realistic. Unfortunately, the dismissive and condescending attitude from the guy who settled my bill needs significant improvement. I asked him to swap out the credit card we originally used to ring up because I wanted to pay for my family's dinner (my dad got to the bill before I did). This man's body language, side eye, and sigh spoke so loudly against the silent treatment he gave me. He grabbed my credit card, SIGNED MY NAME FOR ME, ripped out the receipt, handed it to me, and walked away. No one wants to be treated poorly. Especially when I'm trying to give you $300. I'm not asking for a lot. Just decency from one human to another. Apparently I've crossed a line for this guy. The Good: * Bodinjon Borani: The roasted eggplant appetizer with tomato sauce, garlic sour cream, and dried mint was a delightful starter. * The Combination: Murgh & Teka (Chicken & Beef) was beef was marinated well and tasted great! * Hot black chai: a warm comforting and delicious beverage. I really liked the Chaplee Kabob and the Combo Murgh & Teka. Both were delicious. However, service here is AWFUL. Upon sitting down, it took the staff 40 minutes to even acknowledge us and take our order. We had to call the waiter 3 times. Food came at around 20 minutes prior to ordering, which I feel is standard for kabob dishes. Then, it took another 30 minutes for the waiter to clear our tables and give us the check. The food here is just downright good. If you like Afghani food, this is some of the best. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their combo plates. De Afghanan is always busy but never a long wait for service. It's also clean and very well-themed for an Afghan restaurant.
