Stopped in around 1:45 PM for a late lunch. It wasn't busy at all--I was the only one there, so maybe I beat the lunch rush. When I walked in and approached the counter, the workers turned on the menu screens right away. I went with the combo kabob featuring chicken and lamb. I was told I could pay later and sit wherever I liked, which was a nice touch. I watched as they took the kabob skewers straight from the refrigerator and placed them over hot coals--done the traditional way, which really adds to the flavor. When my plate arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see the meats still on the skewers. It made for a cool presentation. The dish came with fluffy rice, a fresh salad, and bread, along with a spicy sauce and white sauce that complemented everything well. Both the chicken and lamb were tender and packed with flavor. My only small complaint is that I wish there was a bit more meat on each skewer. The interior was clean and spacious, and parking was easy. If you're ever in Newark and craving solid kabobs, this spot is worth checking out. read more

An outside covered area at the side has been added with much more seating. Lots of parking in big parking lot. I ordered at the counter, pd, got food in 14ish minutes. Cooked to order. Only a few patrons came in after me post lunch. Offerings (Afghan): appetizers, drinks, salad, rice, Traditional dishes. Bites: lamb kabob platter (23.99) -2 long metal skewers with 12 petit lamb pieces juicy & moist. Not greasy. -dab of cold salad with fresh purple cabbage, sliced cucumbers & tomatoes sans dressing. Deliz. -small piece of lukewarm Afghan flatbread. -lots of fluffy, long grain basmati rice with some scented herbs. Smelled pleasant. *was unable to finish small amounts of food due to stomach issues, maybe the flu. 3.5 stars semi-worthy:YMMV. Quality: pretty fresh. Lamb grilled to order. Rest premade. I have completely changed my opinion of this place. The food is most authentic of northern Afghanistan Qabuli pilaf (Pallow). The lamb kabob reminded me of the kabobs sold in Kabul by the main Central Park, same taste and smell. The lamb was not lamby as it can be a turn off. The Bolani was served fresh and crispy. While the place is small, and not suitable for large gatherings, you can get a group of 8 to sit outside under enclosed tarpped area. The service can be better. Staff is learning. read more

The chicken was delicious and tasty. It was not dry at all. The man was extremely nice and convinced me to stay in to eat versus to go as it tastes better staying in. As an Afghan, I can say with confidence that this was not an authentic Afghan food experience. Afghan cuisine is known for its rich flavors and quality, and unfortunately the food here felt bland and underwhelming. What was even more disappointing was that the restaurant repeatedly ran out of very basic menu items. The first time, I understood. The second time, it became frustrating. On our most recent visit with family, they were out of two different kabobs because, according to the staff, they had run out of their special seasonings. They also did not have chalow available and simply served qabili instead without informing us beforehand. There were several service issues as well. The salad and hot peppers were placed underneath the qabili plate, and my 6-year-old briefly chewed on one of the hidden hot peppers before spitting it out. In addition, one meal for our group was never brought out, and when we asked about it, we were casually told, "You can take it home for lunch tomorrow." Overall, the service was poor and the food that was available at 6 PM on a Saturday was below average. Unfortunately, we would not recommend this restaurant. There are many other Afghan restaurants that offer much better food, even if the service is not always perfect read more

We came to 786 Kabob House to celebrate my birthday with my husband. We had called ahead to order the Mahicha Palaw, but by the time we arrived, the meat was already sold out. The staff was very nice and made it up to us with great service. We tried the Palaw, and it was delicious full of flavor and perfectly cooked rice. Even though the Mahicha was out, we really appreciated how kind and accommodating the staff were. We'll definitely be back to try it next time! read more

We ordered the platter for 2 and got the eggs and halal sausage, it came with bread, cheeses, jams, olives, honey, tea, and few other sides that make a traditional Afghan and Turkish breakfast. My in-person takeout order included a potato bolani and a beef screwer. Paid $27.54 plus $3 in tip! So I total of $30.54. The bolani barely had any potato in it unlike the bolani I had at this same restaurant in the past. When I picked up my order, "Kathy" said "we made bolani "extra crispy". I never asked for extra crispy bolani. Also, whatever potato was in the bolani was oxidized brown. I called the restaurant and spoke to "Kathy", she said the brown potato was because of garam masala. I did not taste any masala and salt in the bolani. Beef screwer I ordered was over seasoned with salt and hard to chew, and pieces were smaller than what had at the restaurant in the past. At 7:05pm today, I called the restaurant and voiced my concerns to "Kathy". Kathy offered to replace my order at my next visit to the restaurant. I informed Kathy, I have no confidence eating at the restaurant and I requested for a full refund. "Kathy" said the owner was not at the restaurant and will have him call me. At 7:55pm, I received a call from a male who recognized him as the business owner. I voiced my concerns to the owner and again the owner offered to provide the same resolution as Kathy did, which was to replace the same order on my next visit. I again informed the owner that I have no confidence eating at the restaurant anymore and I again requested for a full refund. The owner assumed that I ate the food, and that was his rationale for not giving me a full refund. I informed the owner that the quality of his food was poor. Therefore it was not edible and I had to throw it away. He became combative and accusatory, accusing me of being Muslim and complaining about his food and also accused me of lying about the quality of the food from his restaurant. It's standard to get a refund at any American restaurant when the quality of the food is substandard and not as expected by the consumer. The owner and the Kathy did not provide me with any apology for my time and the poor quality of food I experienced. The owner was arrogant enough to suggest that I should be eating at McDonald's. Trust me McDonald's serves better quality than what I had from this restaurant tonight. read more

I love to support local and small businesses. We have visited this restaurant a few times now. This time they were out of their popular lamb kabobs, had a broken door/window and it was freezing cold. The qabli was delicious, as always. The beef kabob was also delicious as well. The service is always friendly. The restaurant could do better with cleanliness. The corner was filled with trash and dust. Having a restaurant is not an easy task but paying attention to some small details could be a game changer especially when you are competing with other similar restaurants in the area. The broken door should have been boarded first thing in the morning. The restaurant should be cleaned every night after it is closed. I did not see many reviews so I was a bit skeptical. I am glad I got past my skepticism and gave this place a try. The young lady at register was very helpful when I was placing my order. I ended up with the chicken kabob and it was fantastic. The chicken was hot, juicy and tender. The rice was fluffy and flavorful. The spicy green sauce was really good too.
