I've given Metro Self Storage of St. Charles a five-star rating before this comment because Joan…read morehad a great customer service and she kept the place clean at all times. Though the storage is pricy, I felt safe keeping my belongings there until earlier today. Today, October 31, 2023, at around 10:35am, I came in the office to tell a male staff there that I smelled cigarette smoke last night, October 30, 2023, at around 6:48pm. He said that if they did not smoke inside, they can't really do anything about it. I said that I smelled it on my way out. And the door to go inside after the garage automatically opens, and the smell would go all over inside. He got agitated and told me that he cannot stop anybody from smoking. Then, asked me what I think about the corporate would do. I asked him back to find out for me because I normally get reactions if I smell or inhale a cigarette smoke. Luckily, I only had a headache after we left and a tight chest later that night. I had to ask my son to drive halfway because I was not feeling well after I smelled the cigarette smoke. Because he did not show concerns or find out if he or the corporate can do something about the cigarette smoke smell, I said that I am done arguing. I was not really arguing and I should not have said that to him because I was calm until I said that word to him. After that, I walked away from him to get out of the office. Then he said, "Sound good to me." I said that it is not because I am a paid customer. I went back inside the office to ask for his name, but he said that he can't talk to me because he's on the phone with the corporate, yet he responded to my question. I was waiting for a bit, but he would rather stay on his cellphone with the corporate. From the male staff's behavior today, I did not feel safe going back there even if I am paid until January on both of my units. He is the reason why I gave one-star rating today. I can't wait until Joan will come back. I hope that the corporate will hire people like Joan. I love her so much for giving me guarantees that I will be safe going in and out of the storage building, keeping my belongings there, and making me feel comfortable with her cleanliness.

I stored a car here over the winter. Check-in had an unexpected surprise: I was required to buy one…read moreof their cylinder-key locks. They brought this up after I had done almost all the paperwork. Clearly it was a new requirement because my trusty padlock would have worked just fine on the latch the unit had. Mid-winter I went to access my storage unit. Some plow had been by after a previous snowfall and heaped the snow up hard against the doors of all the units on my side of the driveway. It was utterly impossible to lift the corrugated door. I went to the office and there was a brand-new sign in the window saying the only removed snow "within 18 inches of the doors." Well, that was certainly not true--they had pushed snow from the middle INTO those last 18 inches, at least on my side. Probably they meant they DON'T remove snow within 18 inches, but that's not what they wrote. And even if they had written what they meant--and even if they informed me before I rented, which they DID NOT--packing the snow up against the doors would still be inexcusable. The staff in the office did nothing to help me, except offer me a shovel... if I left a security deposit. The owner refused to answer my email and the on-site staff would not give me a phone number. ** DO NOT USE if you want access in the winter!

The people at the front desk have been very helpful in helping me decide what size units to choose. Their prices are very reasonable and the location, which is right on Route 31 near the entrance to I-88, is ideal. I have had great interactions with the people there, even having one of them help me in an emergency situation. Five stars for Next Door Self Storage.

DO NOT RENT FROM THEM - Classic "Bait and Switch" scam…read more Having two kids in college, we have rented several storage units short term, and NEVER had a rate increase over the 4 to 8 month rental period. We rented a storage unit on 1/4/2024 for a monthly rate of $60.80 and told them that we would have the unit until at least September. Less than 90 days later (3/28/24) we received a notification that our rent was going to increase on 5/4/24 to $121.60. More than double. I contacted the rental office, and they were also surprised, stating "this is corporate billing" and "they usually do not increase the rent for at least 6 or 7 months". He said he would call corporate and request that it be reduced to the original rate for at least 3 more months. 4/4 - received a call back that they were able to get the rate reduced to $104 starting 5/4/24. My response was this is completely unacceptable and we will be moving our items out of the unit prior to 5/4. This is a complete scam and classic bait and switch. I could have rented from many other locations that had prices similar. Their current website states, $69 (10x10) for the month. The representative told me that would not apply to you, because you are already a customer. I will now need to rent another truck to move to a different storage unit, which is expensive and time consuming and had I known their business practices, we would never have rented from them. Their website has over 100 (5) star reviews. I tried to write my own review to make other potential customers aware, and their on-line support stated, "that you cannot post a review on our website, we pull reviews from various social media sites and share them on our website". For us, this has been a very costly mistake. Additionally, many individuals who need to rent a storage unit may not be in the best financial position. And to allow people to rent a unit at a given price and then double it less than 90 days later is appalling.

The good: Is it storage? Yes. Metal, doors slide up and…read moredown, you get a lock and keys, and there are usually push carts available. It is gated and the code usually works on the first try. The bad: Temperature controlled is construed liberally. It was COOLER outside when it was in the upper 80s. So not great when you are moving and already bound to get sweaty. The ugly: Even if you are in a hurry to store, do yourself a favor and do more research or get what you are expecting here in writing. Find a storage location where the rate you are QUOTED will be the rate you PAY. We rented here at $73/month, an amount they will later tell you is "promotional". This will be after unilaterally increasing your rate to nearly double after sending "notice" by snail mail (never received). Yes, customers expect rate increases. Yes, this typically is in excess of actual inflation. But taking advantage of a "rate increase" as a way to nearly DOUBLE the price is scandalous. Kevin Laskowski, the manager I spoke with, assured me that a refund of that non-noticed increase was "not possible." But he also says this is the typical practice across the country. As an interior designer who rents another unit and whose clients have also used them (plus one more for a charity for more than a decade), I can tell you that I've never seen a practice this slimy before. Note that when you vacate a unit you receive notification by text, so it is possible to give notice that someone might actually receive. But that is not what happens when they want to silently and exorbitantly increase the rate (and maybe hope you don't notice on your credit card bill). Unfortunate lack of ethics in such a simple and profitable business.
