We enjoyed great service at the Ale House. The beer was cold, service was attentive, and the jukebox a plus!

I took advantage of an April day where the temps hit the high 60's... a pleasant surprise in Maine... to have lunch on the back patio of the Red City Ale House, which sits just feet away from the Presumpscot River. I've been here a couple of times now, and the food and service have never disappointed. Today, the Cubano was juicy and flavorful, and the house fries are seasoned in a bistro rub that's salty and smoky, golden fried to perfection with a crunchy shell and a soft, pillowy center. This is elevated pub fare at its finest, with good portions, fair pricing and a great atmosphere in a restaurant that straddles the middle ground between the coastal towns around Portland and the start of the lakes region in Windham. This place is especially magical in the summer, when the greenery is back and the weather is consistently nice, but I expect it will get busier and busier at peak season, especially as word gets out... and why wouldn't it? Who doesn't want to grab a bite and a drink while soaking up the light reflecting off a lazy river ? The good news is, they are taking reservations, so you can always call ahead to lock in a table on the weekends. Aside from the riverside back deck, they have a full bar with seating, inside tables, and another outdoor patio area in the front along Main Street (aka River Road). Red City Ale House hits the mark for all occasions... I feel perfectly welcome and accommodated coming in to dine solo, I could easily see this being a casual date-night destination, and I could also see it accommodating families or larger groups. Whatever your occasion, RCAH is a road trip worthy destination. read more

Ive been here many times as its easy for me and my daughter to meet. I live in south portland and she lives in north windham. Ive had their Cobb salad, pizza and the last visit I had onion soup. The French fries are tasty and fun curls( I stole some of my grandsons) Great views on the deck and nice ambiance when dining inside. Avoid the "Duck Tenders". They are flat frozen nuggets of white meat that look and taste nothing like duck. We thought we would get actual breaded tenders (like strips of chicken tenders) but got previously frozen flat breaded pieces about the size of a McDonald's McNugget. Why they keep these on the menu is beyond me, and that they charge $16 for them is ridiculous. read more

My husband and I and friend had been to Red City Ale twice and both times had terrible, overpriced meals. We thought since it had been over a year since our last visit, we would give it another try. What a mistake. I will say my brisket sandwich was good and my husband's salad also good. However, the quality of our friend's steak sandwich was very poor and the steak too tough to eat. Upon telling the server this, she told us that the steak was precooked and reheated. The color the meat was also gray. Needless to say, my friend did not eat her sandwich. When the bill came we we shocked to see that a glass of wine was priced at $15.00 (No price was listed on the menu.) That is more that a high-end restaurant such as MK Kitchen charges, They only charge $9.00. We will not be returning and will certainly not recommend that or it's sister restaurant in Gorham. read more

7/18/25 We stopped for a late lunch - very good service- large, spacious dining room with a large bar and countless choices for beers. I would imagine parking to be an issue evenings and weekends. Lemonade extraordinary. Chicken roll up very special. The mussels fra diavolo very good. (Marinara on linguine) About 10-15 minutes from Windham so this will be a frequent stop for us. We went to see one of our favorite Bands play. This place is deceptively huge! From seating out front, to a spacious bar and inside seating, to an expansive back deck with views of the river, there's something for everyone! The service was prompt and courteous. Our drinks and food all came out at a great pace and the check ins were perfect- and it was a very busy afternoon! The menu is quite diverse with lots to choose from It all was good too! The pizza dough is like Naan bread, which is absolutely delicious! The double pepperoni was curled to perfection and crispy. The salads were huge and fresh! I loved my cobb salad. The balsamic dressing was a great foil for the fresh chicken and bleu cheese. I was full! The mussels were plump and juicy in a good sized broth. While the spot for a band is kind of small, it was a gorgeous day to have the garage door open which helped the band tremendously! We are looking forward to coming back! read more

Good ambience with outdoor seating for when the weather is nice. I lad the Philly cheese steak with a salad to replace the fries to be a bit more diabetic friendly. the steak was well seasoned and tasty, but it could have used more cheese. The waitress was friendly and prompt. The price was pretty typical, which is to say a bit high, but hey, everything is too high these days. What are you going to do? We tried Red City Ale House for the first time the other night. It was a Friday evening and the place was very busy, but once the server realized she had our table, the ordering was quick, and the food came out fast. I had an order of wings and opted to split the sauce between buffalo and sweet Thai chili. Both were good, and the wings were crispy. The buffalo wasn't very saucy, but definitely had a good flavor. It came with both ranch and blue cheese dressings that seemed homemade. I paired this with an order of onion rings, which came as a big basket of onion rings, that again seemed homemade. My husband had the Bang Bang shrimp, which were really good! There were several pieces of fried shrimp with a yummy Bang Bang sauce that had just the right amount of kick to it. My husband liked the multiple beer choices. We will definitely be back with our kids, who we think will enjoy the bar type food and atmosphere. We ate inside, but they have glass garage doors that can open up on nice days to a patio area. This is a great place for this area, which definitely needed something like this. read more

Went to dinner with my wife on Halloween Friday Night. The staff were dressed as M&Ms which was really cute. We had the Ahi Tuna appetizer along with wings and a brisket burger for our meals. We also had a margarita and wine for adult beverages. As like any other time we've eaten there, the staff was friendly, the atmosphere was vibrant, and the food was exceptional. My husband and I ordered the Reuben, Cubano, onion rings, scoop fries, and cheese curds. Everything was as dry as if it had been sitting in an overnight for several hours. The onion rings were so overcooked the onion inside were non existent, the scoop fries were so overcooked they tasted like potato chips, the cubano was so dry as if the meat had NO juices...I had hoped since the Reuben had sauerkraut that at least this sandwich wouldn't be dry but sadly that too was as dry as the desert. The only item to at was fair, was the cheese curds and that was only because of the bang bang sauce which was too sweet. The marinara sauce was good. read more

There are only a few parking spots to the side of the restaurant, street parking and an additional lot you are directed to that's a bit down the road. Once inside and seated, I found our table to be awkwardly positioned and too close to our neighbors. It was apparent they were trying to make more seating, but that resulted in us being uncomfortable and it being hard for other guests and wait staff to shimmy by. To start, I had the french onion soup, which came out hot and was nicely topped with a good amount of broiled cheese. The Ladder 1 (buffalo) pizza was my entree. I've had MANY buffalo pizzas, but I did not care for this one. The texture of it was weird. It tasted like they took buffalo chicken dip and used that as a spread on it and then topped it with cheese. This resulted in the pizza tasting kind of mushy. It wasn't to my liking. I'd give this place another shot, just wouldn't order that again. read more

This was our 2nd time at Red City Ale House. The first visit was great, we sat at a high top and had a fantastic waitress. Food was great. Hamburgers were cooked perfectly, my son-in-law devoured his brisket sandwich in record time. Our 2nd visit, not so much! We sat at the bar, the server was more interested in talking to other employees than asking if we needed another drink or taking an order. Food was terrible, my fish sandwich was more bread coating than fish and the other person I was with said the brisket sandwich had fat in every bite. The French fries were pretty good. We went on a busy Saturday evening as a party of four. The hostess seated us immediately and within 2-3 minutes we had our drinks. We started with appetizers of fried curds and poutine. The curds and fries hit the spot. Be warned though that the bang bang sauce is hotter than a stepmother's kiss. We then had the Rueben, Cubano, and two cob salads. The salads initially came without dressing, but was later corrected. The Reuben was decent, but definitely not as good as Sebago. The Cubano was delicious. The restaurant has a great deck overlooking the river and a small but adequate parking lot. The bill was 143.66 for six beers, two apps and four entrees. read more

Red City Ale House is a milieu that is better suited to the Old Port. The aesthetic is antiseptic and uniform lacking any authenticity; an architect's realized vision devoid of any vibe or coolness. RCA's menu is atypically American There is nothing on their bill of fare with a "wow" factor of 10. The entrees are pricey and for that reason we had a beer, left and drove to Pat's Pizza where prices are more friendly to the working class. read more

My family has given this place a few tries. The first experience was takeout, and everything was wonderful. Burgers for the adults were delicious; kids cleaned their plates. The next couple times we went in person. The first visit, the food was incredible - I had the best shrimp scampi I've ever had, and my husband inhaled his mussels. The excellent quality of the food was more than enough to counter an inattentive (yet friendly) server who kept us waiting nearly 20 minutes on both ends of the meal, first to take our order, and then to bring our check. But, again, the food was absolutely worth a return visit. The second time we went, however, was a completely different story. Our server this time around was not only inattentive; she was downright surly to my family. It took over 15 minutes for her to take our drink orders after we were seated because she was busy chatting with the table next to us. After our food arrived, she disappeared completely - before we even had a chance to ask for silverware. After a few minutes of watching our food get cold, my husband was able to flag the hostess to ask for utensils. (Shoutout to the young woman acting as hostess and runner, who was the sole bright spot of the experience.) The food this time was...not really memorable. My scampi was so different from the first time - lots of lemon, but lacking the depth and richness of the earlier visit. (Think acid without the salt, fat, or heat.) The kids enjoyed their meals well enough, but we found out after we got the check that they charged us for adult meals instead of kids meals, which brought our family of four's total dinner cost (with no alcohol) to over $120! And by the time we finally got the check, we'd been waiting so long to settle up the bill that we didn't feel like waiting any longer to address with management. We will NOT be back. TL,dr: the quality of the food has gone down; it's way overpriced; and it's the worst service we've had in the area. read more

My Wife and I came back for a 2nd visit, ordered drinks, I decided on an appetizer and salad, my Wife ordered the grilled chicken wrap with fries. I told our awesome server Alicia that we were fry snobs and ordered them very well done. Our drinks came quickly and no more than 10 minutes later our food arrived, my raw tuna tostada looked yummy and the beet and feta salad was very large. My Wife enjoyed her wrap and said she would order it again, the fries were just as we ordered, nicely seasoned and crisp exterior and creamy inside. The tostada was a well thought out dish, chunks of tuna on cucumber, pickled red onion, some scallion, pineapple with some sesame seed and strips of tortilla. I would like to have seen a bit of seasoning on it or a squeeze of citrus. As it was there were bites of tang from the onion and a little bit of sweet from the pineapple, the tuna was fresh and light. The salad was very good with sliced beets, chunks of feta, tomato, pickled red onion and lettuce, finished with balsamic. A nicely composed salad and can see that being ordered many times. We look forward to many visits here. Alicia as always was all smiles and came over to chat us up a couple of time which is always an added bonus. This is a fav of mine, the high back chairs that hug your back, very comfortable! So happy we came here!!!! Food was excellent and staff was attentive and friendly. Great vibes on a Sunday afternoon. Easily could have had the bang bang shrimp as a meal, so delicious and that sauce is incredible. Scoop fries were a nice alternative to the usual fry situation. The tenders were fresh and the bleu cheese I think was homemade?? Really enjoyed it. Parking was about a minute and a half walk (they have additional parking at Sawyers Variety just up the road). Finally got to get take out from Red City. Amazing experience! I was worried about the parking situation but was able to pull right up and park. The place was packed, but fully staffed and everyone was buzzing around taking care of business. My food was ready when I arrived, so I was in an out in under 5 minutes. I left thinking "this is a restaurant". Got home and the food was great! It's really nice to have a place so close with food on par with Junction and Sebago. read more

Came here on a Rainey Saturday afternoon and was able to get right in to sit down. Placed seemed decently busy and everything came out in time and fast. The parking lot area is congested and there's 2 small parking lots separated from one another. 1 is right next to the resturant and the other is at the closed down sawyer convience store. Maybe a few min walk from the resturant. Plus some street parking in front. I love the variety on this menu for food and even more the fact they have mocktail selection for drinks. The pork was juicy and came loaded on my sandwhich. Tasted like regular BBQ sauce on it. The cheese curds came with "bang bang" sauce, which I wish they had a description of what that was. I wasn't too crazy about it, but I love that they gave it to you as an option with marinara. Inside is really clean looking and love the switch over they did on this building. I can't wait to see how it is with the big doors open in the summer for outdoor seating. Our waitress was nice and on top of everything too. Our table was kind of out of place squeezed between to other big ones, so we moved it our selves inorder to pull our seats out to get in.
