The Blue Pig Diner is always a great choice when in Gorham, but use caution if it's your first time; Parking is scarce, and there is no hostess they use the honor system so you have to pay attention to whom is in front of you. We had a wonderful experience coming to Blue Pig Diner. It's first come first serve so we had to wait about 45 mins for a table of 6-7. The staff were so friendly and tried to help us get a table as soon as possible. They even kicked out two women that stayed way after paying at the table for 6. Our server was so nice, knowledgeable, and tried to help in every way. We all got a drink and brunch. Everything was delicious and came out quickly after ordering. It was quiet but a great atmosphere. They were willing to accommodate minor changes to the menu. All the food was fantastic. I would definitely come back, just with a smaller party. Our first time going to brunch at The Blue Pig was a great experience. I assumed they would have a wait at noon on a Sunday. I called ahead to see if they would put us on the wait list over the phone. They would not. We arrived, and it was a cold day, and luckily they have space inside, with some benches and chairs, to sit while you wait. There is no host taking names. It is seat yourself in the honor system...meaning...you must pay attention to what party arrived before you, and then watch for open tables or bar stools, and seat yourself at the appropriate time without cutting other parties who were there before yours. Since this is a bit uncommon, I can see how this might cause some anxiety for people...I was thinking...will others cut in front of my party? We were a party if 3 and 3 bar stools opened up so we decide to sit at the bar. The whole restaurant definitely has a "bar/tavern" kind of ambiance to it. It does not feel like a "diner". It has a great vibe...very relaxed, neighborhood kind of a feel. The menu includes both breakfast items and lunch items...which was perfect for our party. The menu has several classic southern dishes like country fried steak with sausage gravy, chicken and pork waffles with a choice of maple syrups, and biscuits and gravy. The menu also has traditional breakfast items like egg sandwiches, and other such items. The menu includes classic brunch cocktails, a selection of beers, and several mocktails. I tried the chicken and waffles with the hot maple syrup. It was perfect. The fried chicken was crisp and in smaller size pieces which I liked. The waffles were crisp on the outside and soft on the insides, and the best part was the syrup...it was spicy and sweet and perfect! My friend tried the country fried steak with sausage gravy and biscuits. It was delicious! It was classic in every way...white gravy, but tender steak, nice biscuits. My other friend tried the steak tip sandwich. The blue pig sauce on it was delicious (very savory), and the peppers and onions were chopped into small pieces...but the steak tips were not cut up...which made it difficult to bite through the steak tips. I would have cut up the steak tips and put them back into the sandwich...but it wasn't my sandwich. The sandwich came with spiced curly fries. The fries were VERY good. 1 brunch menu can feed 2-3 people easily. I came for the pancake but end up with corned beef with muffin and medium cook egg (delicious) and a side of pancake. The side of a pancake is actually super jumbo 1 stack pancake that cost $4.5. Their portion is unbelievable huge (not complaining) on top of that the quality of food is great !!! The corned beef is excellent, I take half of everything to go and reheat the next day and still can't finished Just be aware, service is kinda slow. U have to sit yourself and people are good about who's turn to get the table. They are just slammed so if you are in a hurry like me, you have to plan the timing to order, get the to go box, also to get the check in advanced. What a hidden gem! Relaxing rustic atmosphere, great breakfast menu selections, attentive/friendly service & affordable prices....what else can you ask for! I visited this morning for breakfast and after reading about the chicken and waffles, I placed an order with their homemade sausage gravy anticipating a delicious breakfast. Let's just say I was a bit disappointed. The gravy was a perfect consistency but was under seasoned. The fried chicken turned out to be frozen chicken nuggets. The best part of the plate was the waffle. I feel I would have been better off if I ordered the waffles (vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce would be great toppings). No hostess or a place to put your name which is a little different but we just had to wait about 10 Minutes. They have a big inside so the tables flip pretty fast. First off, this place is amazing. It has taken so long to go here because they are always slammed! There is always a wait. Today we were able to get in!! Our wait was about 15 min. Once a table is clean you seat yourself. Our waitress was prompt, attentive and super friendly. I like to ask staff what their favorite dish is.. she was quick to respond biscuits and gravy... so that is what I ordered. I added it with friend chicken and had my eggs scrambled. it was delicious and very filling! My friend had the crab cake Benny and she said it was delicious! Now let's talk Mimosas! So many flavors to choose from! I started with a tropical Mimosa. The menu at blue pig has some fairy unusual combinations of choices. I was looking for something on the healthy end, so I ended up with the veggie Benedict. The vegetables were good and the eggs cooked to perfection. I liked the grilled English muffin and asked for an extra... That cost me three dollars. although the food is good in my opinion, it's over priced for the amount you get. The music is very loud country music so I took in my AirPods to block it out a bit. (I was alone.). The building is on the street corner downtown, so passing trucks, add extra volume of noise. I think I'd like everything a little quieter... The staff is very friendly and attentive. Blue Pig Diner has become a staple for the best brunch in greater Portland, so far as to say it's one of my favorite brunch spots in New England - consistently. Seating was painless, the directions leading us to choose any empty/clean table, and we got a nice spot next to the window. The menu is simple with breakfast on one side and lunch on the other. Few staff were masked. The order came out in just 15 or so minutes and I ordered the pastrami Benedict. The eggs were poached perfectly and the pastrami, while slightly salty, was not too bad -- they certainly did not skimp. My friend however, ordered some waffles with her regular breakfast with two eggs and those looked a bit light and had a very bland taste, taking the medal for least impressive item on our table. By 9-10ish, there was a line out the door and no empty tables so while we didn't feel rushed, I wouldn't expect to come here and be able to sit around after your meal for too long on the weekends. read more

Cute place with some neat antique items like the old cash register behind the bar. Not huge and a sign reading "seat yourself at a clean table when your whole party arrives" means you may have to wait... but there's ample seating for that. There were only a couple of waitresses and a bartender but we only waited maybe ten minutes before two seats at the bar opened up. I started with an espresso White Russian... iced coffee perfection! Hubs had a Bloody Mary. He said it was decent... he's a bit of a bloody snob so I'm guessing the mix may have been bought. He was worried about a short stack costing $9. I said they're probably huge and oh yes they were! At least 10" in diameter and filled with chocolate chips and blueberries. Weird combo but he wanted it and they cooked it. I had the chicken pesto omelette and it was so good!!!! So. Much. Pesto!!!! Home fries were just ok but husband said bacon was crisp and smokey! I tried the Grand Marnier Mimosa and it was delicious! I will be adding GM to my home mimosas effective immediately. Bartender was very friendly and the vibe of the other workers was great as well. I loved this place immediately when I walked in, plenty of room very early on a Saturday. We sat next to an open window with a slight breeze, it was just like eating outside (including an occasional fly, but hey it happens, but I do wish there were screens on the windows). Anyways the food was amazing!! I got the Chicken Cordon Bleu Benedict, everything about it was so good! Fried chicken, ham, Swiss, yum! The hollandaise is light and perfect, and the English is just the right normal size. But the superstar of the dish was the egg. Is there a more perfect poached egg in all the Land? I would like to see it. My husband got the Traditional Benedict, which he loved, he likes his homefries crisper, but I loved the seasoning on them. But he ordered his eggs poached medium and mine were just regular and they were both cooked perfectly. I would order these eggs over fried eggs on their own and day. I wish I'd taken a picture, it's like you can poke a hole in the top of the egg and you have a little yolk dipping cup. My new favorite place!! read more

Good Ol' Gorham - The last time I spent any time in this area (outside of takeout) it was in the 1990s. I wish this place was here back then! Street parking can be tough in Gorham, especially during the winter, but if you time it right, you can find parking in the small lot behind the building - BUT you must be able to climb a flight of stairs that is equivalent to almost two flights - straight up. I was meeting a few friends mid morning on a Saturday and as per my normal process, I got there 15 minutes early. I am glad I did, there were already 3 parties of at least 2 or more waiting for tables ahead of me. There isn't a waiting area, it is just stand right inside the door. It's a bit awkward for those eating and those waiting...nearly impossible not to make eye contact. One thing I did like is the ability to see what everyone was eating, so I could pre-decide what I wanted :) There were low tables that sat groups of 4 and they pushed tables together to accommodate larger groups. There were a couple of high tables as you walk in to the left. There was bar seating as well. I believe there is room for about 50 people in the restaurant. But once seated it actually doesn't feel too cramped. The restaurant is well lit, because the front is all windows. I love natural light, especially when dining inside. It was helpful for me to as I was seated before my friends arrived and was able to see them walking up to the restaurant...preparing to smile, wave and welcome them as they walked through the door. The decorations were subtle but with personality. I especially loved the cow painting in the restroom (which is one room-unisex) Be sure to lock the door :) I liked that the entire party didn't need to be present to get a table - that wins stars automatically from me. The waitperson was super polite and patient and reminded me of the whipped cream option and chocolate drizzle for my hot chocolate. YES PLEASE. The menus were simple, organized and detailed. So many tasty options. I opted for the blueberry pancakes. For me if a place can't do pancakes...then they can't do breakfast. BUT, this place CAN DO pancakes and they do them very well!! Three large plate sized pancakes actually were a challenge for me. I was not able to power through the last pancake. So sad :( if I was going straight home, I could have and would have taken it home. My table mates had more savory items, a waffle breakfast sandwich which was a full waffle folded over eggs and cheese to make it a sandwich. It looked delicious and will definitely have me coming back for breakfast. The veggie hash, looked interesting, but I will probably come back for the meat hash. The staff here were quick and polite and actually smiled at every customer! A HUGE plus for me. I look forward to coming back to try more tasty breakfast items = WAFFLE BREAKFAST SANDWICH! Look out, Gorham, you've got a hot brunch spot in your town! Better get to the Blue Pig early or be comfortable waiting, because people are flocking here on the weekend... as well they should be. The Blue Pig - adjacent to Thatcher's and offering a parking lot behind the building - boasts of delicious diner food and diner prices with non-diner like adult beverages in a non-diner like setting (the atmosphere here is very cool: it's hip meets rustic meets cow and pig decor). I came with friends on a Saturday morning at 9:30; we were lucky that one of our trio came early, waited for about twenty minutes, then snagged a table for us, because even at this earlier hour the line to get in was out the door. I settled for bottomless cups of coffee, but was eyeing the Bloody Mary's (anyone know if these are vegetarian?) and the Irish Coffee options pretty hard. If I hadn't had a full day of work ahead of me, I definitely would have splurged. For food, I'm a sucker for a good egg sandwich (especially ones where the yolk runs through my fingers) and had never had one on a waffle before... wouldn't you know, Blue Pig offers such a treat! My two egg and abundant cheese sandwich came on a folded in half waffle that I drowned in maple syrup (REAL maple syrup - these folks know what's what!) and hot sauce. Which is a FAB combo, FYI. The eggs were cooked a little too much for my personal loving, but I blame that on myself - I should have said something to our (attentive) server. I wasn't a huge fan of the home fries, either - I found them a little greasy and underwhelming. I'm a hashbrown girl through and through, and would have preferred this if it had been an option.
