Tory Hill Cafe, It's been tooo long! Ended up here this morning with a friend after the first three places we tried ended up closed and so so glad I did! Two servers were working the entire place with skill and a smile...amazing! Coffee arrived really quickly and was $2.69 for a bottomless cup vs $5.00 per at that "famous" tourist diner on Commercial street in Portland. My excellent western omelette with home fries and home made wheat toast arrived really quickly. It was great, super cheesy, home fries were solid and the toast was 100%. I was so impressed with the home made bread, our server mentioned that they make white, wheat and raisin and sell it by the loaf AND will slice it for you for 4.79 for wheat and white and a bit more for raisin. How amazing is THAT!!! read more

So... my Sunday go to has temporarily gone from breakfast and lunch to lunch and dinner!!! Yesterday, I ordered the fried fish dinner, a really great choice. I love fried fish, who doesn't!!! I had heard that the portions were generous and I wasn't disappointed!! I ordered 3 meals for 4 of us and it was just enough food. Currently, as with most places, service is take out only. Came here on Sunday around brunch time :-) it's definitely a country diner. In a good way. The customers were all super friendly and chatty, right from the start. It gave a homey feel to it. We were able to find a table quickly and our service was great. We all got very large breakfast plates and the prices were good. The coffee was good and endless (my favorite). I will say hands down, my favorite part of this experience, was the guy that brought us our food. He danced into the room, literally. He was actually enjoying his job, I love that. Food was yummy! I don't know why, but if a road sign in Maine says you're going north, it means: you are going west; you are going south; you really are going north. Maybe. About the only direction it won't say is East. Don't ask me why. So, if you travel out of Portland heading north on Congress Street (Route 22, north) you will travel many miles in a west-southwest direction, wherein you will turn to the northwest - for about 5 miles - and dead end into another route. So it was during one of these futile peregrinations that I stumbled across the Tory Hill Cafe, and I'm glad I did. Now, bear firmly in mind, that this is a small-town eatery. This is not a city restaurant. It's small, neat, even cozy in that special way that New England towns are. The folks are friendly, the service prompt and attentive, the menu interesting for its combinations and the specials on the board are both intriguing and reasonably priced. So what's not to like? The coffee came quickly: The refills without asking. I ordered one of the specials - Beef Tips with gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans with garlic bread. Got to tell ya, the beef was both RARE and tender, something you don't usually find. The potatoes were home made and good (although I still don't like the shape of getting them served from an ice cream scoop). The string beans were from a can. So, they tasted like they came from a can. Not bad. Just not good. But, remember, this is a small town diner - for the locals - and the price reflects it. Where can you get succulent beef tips with all the trimmings for 8-bucks and change? I didn't stay for dessert. I still needed to figure-out where I was and how to get to where I was supposed to be, and how to get there, but I will be back again. All in all, if you are in the area and hungry, you can't do much better IF you remember that it is a local place for plain home cooking at a very nice price. read more

A tough place to find-its kinda in amongst garages and other buildings. But worth the hunt. Its where the locals go, and peeps on a hunt for great food with some type of ambiance. This place has great chow, fair prices and an ambiance that can be found only at a place like this, not manufactured, not kitchy or hip, just what you want most of the time. A small town cafe. Full of locals midmorning. Being new to the area it was our first time and we were unfamiliar with the seating process. We waited... & after almost 2 minutes of standing there, while clearly noticed by the staff, we were finally told to sit anywhere. The food was reasonably priced, served quickly, to order and hot. Decent home fries, over easy was over easy And The omelet had enough going on inside. The server was accommodating though not quite friendly. Too long before a coffee refill. It might be more welcoming if you are one of the regulars, but it's a solid breakfast for the price. It is what it is, quick breakfast. read more

Ordered a pizza it got put in the oven while the girl went outside. 20 mins later another girl who must have been off that day came in. Grabbed it out of the oven and handed it to me. We have for the most part have always been satisfied. This past Monday was the last time we will Come here. Absolutely rude and discourteous servers. Listening to one of them talk about another diner right in front of us. One server seen a elderly couple waiting to be seated and literally yelled over " it will be a while"!!! Like really! This place has friendly staff. Great prices, homemade bread was surprising to see and a great option. The servings are big. Also, i opted for the hashbrown instead of homefries, and was elated to get two of them instead of just the typical one. I've been several times over the past year for breakfast with friends, once for lunch. Breakfast is served all day, and it's reliably good food with interesting egg selections, homemade bread for toast. Eggs Benedict is always done perfectly, hard to achieve. The fish chowder at lunch was excellent, not thickened with flour, lots of fish. The waitstaff is always always pleasant and helpful. The atmosphere is local diner. You can't go wrong here. It's simple, but delicious cooking. Their homemade breads for toast are cut super thick, and toasted just enough. Omelettes are always cooked right, and stuffed with your selection of ingredients. One of my favorite things to get here is the liver and onions dinner. There's crispy bacon on top of the liver and onions, and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. Definitely a great meal. read more
