Love this place a true classic drive in. Find your parking spot and order from the large menu. They have a great selection of burgers and hotdogs. My wife had the blue burger (blu cheese) while I had one of their special burgers with mushrooms, bacon, American and Swiss cheese and onions. We also split an order of fries and we had two large drinks. Everything was great. Be aware, this is a seasonal place and is only open during the tourist season. That is the only drawback. read more

There's nothing like finding an old fashioned drive-in restaurant to offer a bit of nostalgia to a by gone era. Their car hop was helpful and patient as we perused their expansive menu offerings. This restaurant is reminiscent of a 1950s drive up with the car hop taking your order at your car. There is a small dining room inside. This place was hopping with a constant stream of customers coming and going. The cooks and car hops were efficient! Loved the special sauce on their one patty burger, but the burger itself was hoe hum. The hotdog was fantastic, however, and definitely a reorder. This is a fun experience dining in our car. We stopped by on the way to Jackson and it was my first time dining in a pull-up spot. Food was good/okay, nothing to write home about. Also ordered a dipped Cone (in memory of the ones from McDonald's back in the day) and it was very melty. Glad we visited but this isn't a must-go. read more

We love the shakes at Red Baron! We will go there just for the shakes. They gave several flavors and everything we have tried is great!!

I had hoped for a better experience. While the staff was prompt in reaching our car to take our order, and brought us a menu when we requested it, the rest of the visit was lacking. The food arrived in a reasonable time, but my shake, which I ordered with bananas, came with M&Ms instead. We couldn't get the carhop's attention, even though we had our headlights on for a long time. Eventually, we had to return the tray ourselves. Initially, the carhop seemed helpful and responsive, so I tipped generously, but the service declined after that. Everyone else in the car was happy with their shakes and fries, though they forgot the fry sauce we had requested. Overall, 3.5 stars feels accurate, but since that's not an option, I'll give them four stars. read more

Ambiance is amazing. A fun, old school drive-in experience where you can either sit in your car and eat or dine in or sit outside. I've eaten here many times as I live local and recommend! Red Baron is a classic establishment that's been around since the late 60's. My wife who is from the area always talks about how it was her favorite place growing up, which this is a common trend I've heard from others as well. The food itself is an 8/10, definitely will beat your sonic by far. I would highly recommend just trying it yourself and enjoy the experience that you'll have. They're usually pretty busy which makes the service a little spotty at times. But nothing bad or what you wouldn't expect at a drive in fast food restaurant. As well they do close down for the winter, so if you are wanting to go plan for the summer time. read more

What a fun summer stable to the valley! We came here for the first time on a Friday night and enjoyed the fun atmosphere and the friendly staff. Drive up, curbside pickup, or park and go inside or to an outside table to eat. Plenty of options for whatever you're in the mood to do! We got hamburgers, and corn dogs for dinner. I got the bacon cheese burger and my husband got a regular double burger and both were pretty meh. The bacon was floppy and weak, and burger itself felt like a low quality beef and they use an underwhelming American cheese. Kind of funny to have a burger joint with low quality patties in the heart of cow country. The corn dogs were good, but nothing special! The cheese fries were pretty good and we would get those again. Where this place really shines though, is in their SHAKES! We got the strawberry shake with Oreo and we couldn't eat it fast enough. No strawberry syrups here, just real refreshing fruit that tantalizes the tastebuds at every bite! We liked the shake so much we went back later that night just to get more ice cream! I recommend the cake batter with cookie dough. The tropical shake had chunks of pineapple if you're into that sort of thing, but it was very tasty. The grasshopper has a more true mint flavor than most are used to, but it's still delicious. They mix the mix-ins very fine, not chunky! I wonder if you could ask them to make it chunkier... Do NOT get the veggie burger. It was pure mush and very gooey. I've eaten quite a few veggie patties and have never had one this disgusting. I went to the cashier that was taking orders and complained. She went back and talked to the cook? Manager? Owner? I have no idea which, but promptly returned and told me it was supposed to be that way. I threw it in the trash. I've never done this with any restaurant meal in the past. I was visiting this area yesterday and stopped by here for lunch. I ordered a double bacon burger, and they forgot my bacon. The burger was great, the fries were crisp and the staff were very nice. Love EVERYTHING about this place! From the workers, to the food, to the atmosphere, to the beautiful location! You can't go wrong with a stop at an old-fashioned drive-in. First and foremost, this restaurant is only open seasonally. In the summer, and it's usually from beginning of May-end of September. Their hours are 10:30 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. Open for an early lunch (or late breakfast, if you like burgers and shakes to start off your morning) as well as dinner and late night treats! Second, this restaurant has great food and lots of options! I, myself, have tried everything on the menu. Not only do I know the best choices, but I know about the "hidden menu" items as well. And since you graced my Yelp profile with your presence, I will let you in on ALL the secrets. Best hamburgers: Big Red or the Al's Special. The Big Red is a cheeseburger with ham on it, it's so tasty, but if you want it even better--get it with SWISS cheese instead of the usual American. The Al's Special is big cheeseburger with ham, mushrooms, and both American and Swiss cheese. Trust me, both are amazing. Best chicken burgers: Chicken Malibu or Royale (breaded and fried chicken with ham and swiss or bacon and swiss). If you're not down for fried food, try the grilled Chicken Filet sandwich (you can get that malibu/royaled as well). If you're not feeling chicken or hamburger, order the Sea Burger or the Footlong Hotdog. The Sea Burger is breaded and fried haddock with a zesty tartar sauce and lettuce (ask for a juicy tomato and some melted swiss cheese to be put on it too, it makes it that much better). The hotdog has some special homemade tomato, onion, meat sauce that is everything and more. It's so incredibly messy--but that's what makes it so incredibly good. The onion rings are to die for, as are their cheese tots. These sides do come with good old fashioned pink sauce, or as everyone else apparently calls it--"fry sauce". But ask for a side of COOK SAUCE as well. Both are great dipping options! Fresh raspberry, fresh strawberry, and fresh banana shakes; however, if you're craving something incredibly chocolatey, order hot fudge brownie. Sooooo good. As are their soft serve ice cream cones (butter pecan is off the hook). Last, but certainly not least, as the array of beverage choice. Good old fashioned Pepsi products, however they make custom drinks that are sure to quench your thirst: 1. Scotch and Soda--7-up with fresh lime and vanilla. (Try adding a scoop of fresh raspberries to it as well). 2. Tomahawk--7-up with tigers blood flavoring. 3. Baron Blast--Dr. Pepper with coconut and raspberry flavoring. It's clean, both the employees and fellow eaters are nice, and again it's in a beautiful place! You can't go wrong when you choose the Red Baron :) TIPS & TRICKS: * The best place to park and eat in your car is on the "north end" of the drive in, the spaces furthest away from the road. They always seem to be a little more shady and cool, two great combos to a potentially-melty ice cream cone. * Have your money ready as the car hops actually take your money right after you order. It makes it more efficient and that way you're not dealing with change at the same time you're dealing with screaming kids who "JUST WANT THEIR KIDS MEAL CHICKEN NUGGETS." * The car hops hang a tray right on your window when your food arrives and if you don't want to look like a total newbie, have your window prepped and ready to take on the load of delicious food. Roll it up about a third of the way and you're golden! * The "Shelly Sundae" is a refreshing treat as well--a caramel sundae made with green apple icecream, topped with almonds. Maybe for this area, Red Baron is above average but I wasn't very impressed. Nothing was terrible but all of it average, lackluster food that seemed to maybe be more nostalgic for people than actually great. I had the mushroom burger which literally just has a patty (should go double because it was too thin to taste), mushrooms, and American cheese (disappointing but not unexpected). The bun was soft and everything gooey. Flavor was okay. The chocolate sunday came out already pretty melted and was pretty much what you expected. They do have tater tots which was a nice change of pace because the fries are just the standard shoestring kind from a frozen bag. The drive through aspect and decor were a lot of fun and had a nice 1950's vibe to them and the place was packed so the locals seemed to really enjoy it. read more

The place was packed with people for lunch on Labor Day, but our friendly server got to our car for our order quickly. The wait for food wasn't bad considering the crowd. If it's your first time, you may not know (we didn't) there's indoor ordering/seating in addition to the drive-in and outdoor tables. Inside you'll also find the two restrooms, single room style marked with gender symbols. No baby changing station in the ladies room - didn't ask if there was one in the other; the floor space is quite large though, if you want to chance using it. Their special sauce tastes like Thousand Island, which overpowers the recommended pastrami burger (get double patties, they're thin). Cheese is American, (tater, that's slang for potato in case you're not familiar) tots are crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, medium sized drinks seem like smalls, and the fries are regular skinny with no skin. It was a gray August day in 1998 as my family loaded into our rented Chevy Corsica. We had been on the road since the first of the month that summer, a lot of miles down with more waiting for us on the iron rail. We had come up to Wyoming via Salt Lake City thru Pocatello. My parents decided to travel a different way back to Utah from our previous route. With an atlas in hand, my parents pointed us south down US-89 along the Wyoming/Idaho border. The natural topography of the land left a lasting impact on my appreciation of the natural world and the American landscape. I will be forever grateful that I got to partake in the American Experiment known as our National Parks. But I digress, back to this fantastic little piece of Americana nestled in the foothills of West Central Wyoming known as the Red Baron. Around midday we were coming through Afton when my Dad spotted the Red Baron. "Everyone hungry?" He said. We pulled up to the curb, probably the first customers of the day. Now mind you, I am from a generation where the Fast Food Experience was catered to the small child. The drive-in was pure novelty to me and this alone I think garners a stop for those passing through. If you want redemption for that one Sonic trip you made after seeing years of commercials on an endless loop. The Red Baron would be the place to find that sliver of small town Americana that has been disappearing from our collective landscape. We ordered Four Burgers in different varieties, fries and soda all around. Just a nice family from the East Coast, enjoying a burger on the side of the road in small town Wyoming. I ordered a Pizza Burger as it was the first time I had seen a Pizza Burger on a menu. I decided to dive in head first, like Cecil Fielder into second base. The pizza burger was a real pleasant surprise, a beef patty in tomato sauce with a healthy layer of extra cheese. Fries and Root Beer were great too, just simple food done well. You could tell it is the kind of place where the local little league team celebrates and many weary travelers find respite in the small mountain hamlet on their journey to points elsewhere. Now, if you are expecting my narration to continue in a Norman Rockwell-esque tone dripping with a soundtrack by Aaron Copeland, by all means stop reading now. As we were enjoying this great meal, my oafish older brother decided to exit the car under the guise of getting a candy bar from the store next to the Red Baron. As he sauntered over, my Father whispered to Mom just loud enough for me to hear "He better not be buying f*cking fireworks" Yes, that is right, the proprietor in 1998 next to the Red Baron was a merchant of BOOM and would sell you low-grade Chinese fireworks at Rock Bottom American prices. Now if you were underage, 2500 miles from home, and about to travel on a Government funded rail network with a layover in Second City, I am going to make the assumption you would NOT elect to smuggle fireworks across the country. Good for you, because well that is what any functioning rational person would think in that situation. But my kinship had none of those qualities and in typical me-first American fashion decided to put us all at risk for the benefit of a fleeting fun moment in the future for himself. My brother's plan was to walk across the parking lot, IN FULL VIEW OF EVERYONE with a giant bag of fireworks with some bottle rockets sticking out of the top. When he got to the car, he asked my Dad to pop the trunk. My Dad swiveled in his seat like a linebacker following the ball on a play action route. He got out of the car and let out a carefully constructed series of curse words and insults that I will not repeat to remain in the bounds of good taste. All the while I sat there eating my delicious pizza burger, served with a smile by a young lady gaining the first job experience we all need to serve as a foundation for future endeavors. So I'm sure if you have read this review you are asking yourself, Why did this random guy post a review of a drive-in restaurant he visited once 22 years ago? First off, Great question! Second, I wanted to apologize to the restaurant staff who saw my Dad lose his cool and berate his kid in full view of EVERYONE. He came from a generation that made it hard to express emotionally healthy disappointment in his children. While not absolving him of blame in his reaction, it's hard to formulate a response when you have never been educated on how to handle these matters. So for that I am sorry, but again, fantastic restaurant. Which leads to me why I wrote this review, 22 years later I still think about the meal and that little town. Someday I'd like to go back to travel that stretch of road again from Bear Lake north to Yellowstone. It warmed my little heart to see that 22 years later the Red Baron is still going strong! Can't wait to try an actual burger. I assume extra pickles is no charge, but that is a discussion we can reserve for a future time. read more

The Pastrami burger, or hoagie is delish, chicken mal (with ham & Swiss) or Roy (with bacon & Swiss) the Als Special--with ham & mushrooms, or the Footlong Roy is amazing too! It has some homemade sauce from the owners--you don't want to miss out! Get some fries, tots, or onion rings!! (They also come with fry sauce) and you will want to drink it because it is soooo good!! They are only open seasonal--May-Sept. They have Car-Hops outside & that is very convenient! Make sure to tip them, as they are doing you a big service :) They have yummy shakes! Whenever I travel I always like to try local small restaurants. This place has a really neat concept with the car hop drive up option. The restaurant says it's been around for 50 years, which is always impressive to me. They have plenty of staff taking orders and the food comes out relatively quickly. The tater tot's very crispy and the burgers are decent. This place was just OK for me. We ordered a pastrami burger and a bacon burger.This place is only open in the summer months and it was getting ready to close and just a few days. I would say if you are in Afton check this place out but if it's in the winter you're going to not be able to eat here. read more
